Valentine -- Phoenix, AZ A group of us went to dinner at Valentine last night, and the entire experience was amazing from start to finish. We were greeted and seated promptly, and our servers were absolutely wonderful. The drinks and food were both top-notch, and the ambiance was calm, atmospheric, and romantic without feeling stuffy. The food was easily a 10/10. Everything was so unique, flavorful, and made with such high-quality ingredients. You can really tell there's a lot of thought put into the menu. After dinner, we were escorted over to their lounge next door for a nightcap and listening party, which was such a fun addition to the evening. We loved the experience so much that when our waiter mentioned they also serve breakfast, we came back the very next day to try the breakfast menu for the first time! And WOW -- breakfast did not disappoint. We tried the Sonoran dog with roe, tres leches French toast, steak and eggs, and the tamale bowl. Everything was amazing, but the Sonoran dog with roe was LIFE CHANGING. I would highly recommend either the steak and eggs or the Sonoran dog. The French toast was delicious, but I was glad we had some heartier dishes to balance it out. And I can't forget the thrift store! It's absolutely adorable, and I especially loved all of the crochet blankets. Between the food, service, atmosphere, lounge experience, and all the little details, Valentine is such a special place. Well, I was born the day after Valentine's Day, so I was certainly intrigued by a restaurant with a name like Valentine. I stopped by on a Friday evening at 7:45 with a friend. We had a reservation, but there were several tables open, so we probably would have been find. They have a complimentary lot, but it's not that big. Thankfully, I was able to find a spot. Ambiance (4/5): Valentine is a charming restaurant. Relatively small but comfortable. They have an open kitchen and there are also some couches in addition to your typical seating. We sat at a two-person table. It was a little small, but it was fine. And it was a little hot inside. Something to be mindful of, especially during August in Phoenix. Service (4.5/5): The service throughout was great. Attentive, efficient, and friendly. Our waiter did well taking care of us. No complaints. Drinks (4.5/5): Valentine has a nice wine and cocktail list. I ended up going with a Chilean wine. Potentially the first time I've had wine from Chile. My dining partner liked her cocktail. Food (4/5): We started off with the Sonoran what pretzel as an appetizer. It's served with whipped hen butter and honey comb which is an interesting take. A little mix of sweet and savory. And hey, I'll take a healthier pretzel every day of the week as long as it still tastes good. It did. Crispy on the exterior and soft on the inside just as you hope. One of their most popular starters. From there, I had the elote pasta which is their most popular dish. The presentation is awesome. The pasta is made to look like corn on the cob. And this was my first time having elote pasta. I love elote and I love pasta, so I was excited to try this fusion. Sadly, while not bad, both me and my friend agreed that it could have been better. We appreciated the creativity, including the dry corn kernels sprinkled on top, but the sauce was just too dry. It needed more creaminess to take it to where it could be. Pro tip: Valentine has a speakeasy inside of their restaurant. Stop by afterwards for a night cap. You can get in either through the restaurant or through the back. So a fellow Yelper and I decided to cross another one off our list. Enter Valentine in the Melrose District. It's very dimly lit for dinner service, but makes for a great romantic ambiance if that's what you're after. We started off with the Sonoran Wheat Pretzel as an appetizer. It comes with a housemate whipped hen butter which was amazing! Very light and fluffy in texture and smooth on the palate. It meshed well with the honeycomb. The pretzels themselves were nice and fluffy on the inside and we liked that they were hot and fresh! I couldn't decide on an entrée, but ultimately chose the Elote Pasta. We both did. It was unique in flavor and we especially appreciated the presentation as it literally looks like an elote corn on the cob. I ordered the Jungle Bird cocktail and I loved it. Perfect balance of sweetness and alcohol. You know how I like 'em! Service was fantastic as we never had to flag anyone down and we were very well taken care of throughout our visit. I did drop a star because it was pretty hot in the dining room. It made the experience slightly uncomfortable but we worked with it. Also, the pasta was tasty, but we both agreed it needs more sauce. They have a large variety of unique flavor pastries and they all look amazing. We tried the guava cream cheese croissant and it didn't disappoint. They also have gf options. Drinks have a variety of cocktails wines and coffeea all sounded grea. We tried a peppery coffee and tumeric latte which were the best. For food we got the croque madam and the dulche de leche gf waffle. Both so good. My only thing was the waffle was incredibly sweet and covered in so much flavor. My son and I came here for breakfast just a couple days after they got the honor of being listed in the Michelin guide. It was pretty full, but they were kind enough to ask somebody to move down at the bar to make two seats together for us. I really appreciated that because a lot of places won't do that. The decor here is so bright and airy with lots of tables and chairs. There are more loungy areas with low, upholstered chairs. If all has kind of a mid-century modern feel. There is a bar on one side. You can see right into the kitchen which, if you know me, is something i like. We sat it at the bar, which somehow feels very communal - - and I love it. I ended up making a new friend while I had my breakfast. In the same building is a vintage store, which is definitely worth a visit. There is a speakeasy, too, but, you know, it was only 9:30 a.m. I ordered the Chiltepin Shakerato, which is an iced espresso shaken with Chiltepin chile and cacao. It was sooooo good! For breakfast I had the daily quiche (which comes with a side salad) and my son had the Tres Leches French Toast. Both were delicious! The French toast was ooey and gooey and so good. One of the things that I noticed here and that I really applaud this place for is the wonderful hospitality. Everybody I encountered had a smile and really seemed to like their jobs and really wanted to please the customer in the friendliest way. Great staff makes great food even better! read more

Valentine has such a beautiful, moody atmosphere. The ambience was definitely one of my favorite parts, and the service was great too. The menu has a really cool and unique concept, so I was excited to try everything. The pretzel was a little too chewy for my taste, although I really loved the honey served on the side. The steak was good, but honestly, it wasn't anything that wowed me. Also the hamachi crudo which is usually my favorite at any restaurant was not very good unfortunately. Overall, I think I was expecting more from the food because the menu sounded so interesting. Once everything arrived, I just wasn't blown away by the flavors. For way too long Valentine was sitting on my list of places to try. We had family visiting from Cali and they know one of servers working there, so they asked if I have been, I said no but I would love to go. I always planned to go for dinner, I didn't even know they were open for brunch. Well now I do, and it was SO delicious that I would like to come back to try other menu items. The ambiance of Valentine is like being in Palm Springs at a resort enjoying brunch. It's very mid-century modern and I love the decor. They have a large outdoor patio that is probably nice when it's not summer. We sat inside and noticed there is a vintage market (Modern Manor) attached to the restaurant, we went there after eating. (A cute place with some pricey items. I'll post a separate review of the store.) Our server Pete, he was exceptional. He knows my cousins' husband and he gave us the grand tour of the menu. His recommendations were spot on, and we wanted for nothing. We started with handcrafted drinks, I really enjoyed the coffee menu options, with unique flavors. I had the iced Cajeta latte with oat milk. Cajeta is like a Mexican caramel and was very good with espresso. I also tried the chiltepin shakerato (a slight spicy mocha) and golden milk (turmeric latte). I really liked all of them. Then we had a fantastic sampler plate of pastries-- piñon croissant, morning swirl, and churro croissant roll. Baked fresh, these are really great! My fave was the morning swirl. I would come back to try the other pastries alone. Next we had the chula seafood crudo with a delicious agua chile sauce. Then onto our entrees-- avocado toast, breakfast sando, tortilla espanola, tres leche French toast, tater tots, and for good measure the Sonoran dog. I was able to try all the dishes and everything was awesome. The toast used is a thick Texas toast type of bread that is called squash brioche-- so good! Everything tasted fresh and flavorful, you can tell that Valentine cares about using fresh, local, high quality/ interesting ingredients with unique flavors. I mean they add trout roe to their Sonoran dog and serve with house made allium-nori chips... how fun is that?! And mesquite-pecan butter with sorghum-sage syrup for the French toast is so rich and sweet. That's a dessert type brunch dish for sure. We had so much food, we couldn't finish so we boxed up leftovers which heated up and tasted great the next day. I fully intend to come back for the dinner menu and have cocktails at Bar 1912. Outstanding experience! If I could double the stars and give 10 stars I would. Our waiter Josh, was fantastic too! Local farmer for their meat, unique dishes with unique flavors. Huge wine list, even though I didn't order any. We ordered the olives with Mahon cheese (serves as a fabulous appetizer. We also enjoyed the Sonoran wheat pretzel (wow, it was delicious!!!!) then the elote pasta and the pork ribs. Pasta was a good portion and the meat on those ribs had delicious flavor and fell off the bone. You could ask for an additional one if you want. We then had dessert, I think they rotate them so if you want to try this unique and delicious and light corn cheesecake make sure they have it. It wasn't heave and the red corn masa crust flavors reminded me of flavors my mom used to bake. The ambience was soothing and cool. Octagon shaped bricks held wine bottles. Various types of seats for eating ...high counter seats that overlook the street and the Melrose sign, leather seats to sit comfortably with friends, the bar or various other seating options. Room for semi large groups or two seaters. Soft lighting throughout. Service was fantastic and while somewhat pricey, it was 100% worth every penny! I went to Valentine while I was in Arizona and had the burger, which came with tater tots covered in a really good sauce. The burger really surprised me it tasted amazing and was actually pretty affordable for this type of restaurant. The bartender even told me it's definitely their favorite item on the menu, and I can see why. I also had a couple of espresso martinis, and you can tell they use really good coffee as they use fresh espresso for them. You ever just sit down at the table, get handed the menu, glance at it for a second then look up at who you're with and have a shared look of "oh no" come across your faces? That was the experience our group had at Valentine. It's one of those places that's trendy and hip, and unless you're there to post to your instagram story, you'll leave wanting more. Our waiter explained that they recommend eating family style here, with the plate sizes getting bigger as you go down the menu. Maybe family style for like a nest of newly hatched birds. Half chicken, $42. No actual sides with that, just half a small chicken. 3 ribs? $24. That's $8 a pork rib. None of the food was out of this world flavors either to demand a premium price point. Not to be completely negative, the cocktails were all very enjoyable. We left here and went to In-N-Out as a group after since we were all still pretty hungry. I can't believe it's taken me so long to review but Valentine was an amazing weekend brunch spot. They have a really unique menu that features a lot of Sonoran cuisine and it's attached to a vintage antique store? Heck yeah. For brunch, we were treated to a complementary squash sticky bun. This was delish, highly recommend. I also ordered the masa almond tea cake. The flavor of this was yummy but it wasn't evenly distributed. The cake was kind of dry and flavorless on the outside and moist on the inside. For my meal, I got the Tres leches French toast. Do not get this unless you're like me and have a major sweet tooth. I think this was one of the sweetest meals I've ever had, it was basically slathered in syrup. V yummy. It was fun to explore the vintage store after. It was a great way to walk off a big brunch and discover some cool pieces. If you're looking for a brunch spot in Phoenix, highly recommend Valentine. My husband and I dined at Valentine on a Saturday evening and it was packed. I would recommend making reservations. Overall, I would rate the food 3.8 stars. It was good, but not good enough to return for dinner. I *might* consider trying the brunch menu, since there's better reviews for it. We started with a couple mocktails: I got the mango lassi and my husband ordered the matcha melon. We both enjoyed our own drinks better than each others. The mango lassi was more yogurt-y than mango, and had a hint of lime. The matcha melon was more match-y than melon. Both were refreshing. We ordered the famous pretzel which came out hot and fresh. It's sort of a cross over between a pretzel and a donut as it was on the sweeter side. It came with whipped butter and honeycomb which was a great combo. This tasted more like a dessert than an appetizer, but I enjoyed it. We also ordered the octopus, bison tartare, and elote pasta. Everything was pretty good but it was so salty, especially the octopus. Nothing was outstanding though. We ordered the charred cabbage which took so long to come out that I thought our server forgot about it. When it finally arrived, it just looked straight up burnt. The inside was a little better, but when I took a bite, it tasted like ocean water. It's as if it was brined in salt for 24+ hours which is really excessive for cabbage. We asked our server to take it back since we only had one bite each. I do not recommend ordering this. Our server took awhile to give us our check. But it turns out, she surprised us with the gulab jamun dessert, which was nice. I enjoyed the cardamom ice cream but the gulab jamun (fried dough balls) were too dense and sweet. What a great place to go with people and to try new things. Everything is so unique. If you are looking to try interesting desserts, drinks, and a well done meal this is perfect. It's definitely easy to spend a lot of money as you will probably want to try a few things. Its connected to a vintage furniture shop with tons of awesome things to look at. A few notes about what I tried. The best thing was the tortilla espanola; The flavors were perfect and the sauce that went with it was great. The corn cappuccino was so interesting; It tasted very much like corn in a great way that compliments coffee as much as it can. The breakfast sandwich was delicious you should definitely add avocado. The tres leches French Toast was very dark and tasted almost licorice; It was interesting I don't know how I feel about it mostly because I don't think the name matched what it was. Pro-tip: Really hard to find parking, you'll have to park in the neighborhoods. Highlights: They had a very unique and creative menu. I was especially blown away by their pastry display and wish I could've tried everything. Stopped in this morning for a late breakfast/brunch. I was dining solo and was greeted warmly and able to be seated at a table. The hostess made a pastry recommendation and my server had the same recommendation so I tried the pain suisse. 10/10! It was a beautifully flaky pastry with sweetness from the guava. So delicious. Good food experience overall. Definitely a date night spot. My favorites were the elote pasta and the octopus. These are the two I would definitely come back here for. The octopus was cooked nicely, charred but with a nice soft texture and the aioli it came with was delicious. Elote pasta was so good that I could probably eat a whole serving by myself. It was like another version of cacio e pepe--a light and cheesy sauce and had crispy corn mixed in. The other food was all good too. The trout was cooked nicely. Cabbage was flavorful. Steak was solid and the tortillas and salsa verde paired well. The smoked chicken was good but not as exciting as expected--kinda like a rotisserie chicken with tzatziki. Their gulab jamun was pretty unique, I thought the orange flavor went well with the cardamom ice cream. Place is dimly lit at night and very aesthetic. The service was fine although I didn't appreciate our server's comment after we put our order in: "Wow you guys are hungry." Kinda odd for him to say that, especially since I thought we ordered appropriately and we did finish all the food. Love coming to Valentine for a nice drink and breakfast sandwich! Any time I've had a latte here it's been good but I love my matcha lattes even more. This place has a very cool chill vibe and there's tons of seating if you wanna get some work done or just relax. Food was thoughtful and ingredients are well-sourced and honor arizona's food profile. The octopus and elote pasta were the stars tonight. I also liked the gulab jamun dessert, especially the cardamom ice cream and orange peel that came with it. On the other hand, the chicken was a really underwhelming plate, really simple seasoning and the sauce was just tzatziki. the steak was solid, but also pretty simple, just a salsa verde on top. The beans that came with it were also salty; tortillas were fantastic tho. The cabbage was pretty good, but the passionfruit coconut yogurt sauce was too tart and overpowering. The trout was cooked beautifully with a delicious rice under it, but was overshadowed by an excessive amount of dill. The server did make a comment which we didnt really like hearing; after we ordered he said "oh, so guys are *hungry*. We ordered 2 apps and 4 entrees for four people, and to be honest it wasn't even excessive for the four of us. He insisted we would have leftovers but we finished it just fine. Unfortunately for us Phoenicians, we don't have many Resy options, and the quarterly Amex dining credit basically forces us to eat out more than we need to... which is how we ended up here again. I started with an espresso martini that was actually pretty good--real coffee flavor instead of that sugary artificial stuff. Hubby went simple with an iced tea. I ordered their "featured" fried chicken and caviar. Supposedly Siberian caviar, but I wouldn't know because I couldn't taste a single thing. The eggs didn't even look good, and whatever they used must've been questionable because they hid it under a blanket of sauce. Completely smothered. Zero caviar flavor. What a waste. The fried chicken itself was fine, but the portion was so tiny that for a second I thought I'd been teleported back to Amsterdam. LOL. Hubby's steak and eggs were definitely the better choice--8oz dry-aged flank steak with two eggs, porky beans, and salsa verde. Hearty, flavorful, and exactly what I wish I'd ordered. Next time, that's the move. We grabbed a few bakery items to go, which were solid. The pain au chocolat is the standout here. Came here a second time for dinner and gotta say their dinner dishes were so good! I would say the scallop crudo threw me off a little bit because this combination was a bit odd - scallop, asparagus, melon, and radish. Some bites were a bit citrusy but some were not, which was a little confusing. But the rest of the dishes were soooo good! The steak was lean but tender, the pasta was creamy and not too heavy. And love the dessert, especially the sorbet on top - really flavorful and refreshing. I'm not a fan of cilantro, but the lime cilantro granita in the middle was acceptable to me. Came here for breakfast on a Wednesday morning for my fiancé's birthday and we were not disappointed. We have heard amazing things about Valentine and finally made the pilgrimage from Gilbert to try it. Worth the drive! I tried their jalapeño cheddar cornbread muffin--phenomenal! Savory. Valentine is an amazing culinary experience from start to finish. Service is phenomenal and extremely attentive -- my water glass was never empty. It's a vibe on a Friday night in the Merose neighborhood. They do have a parking lot but when I arrived for my 7pm reservation on a Friday night (around 6:30) the lot was full and I had to drive around and find street parking -- which wasn't too hard to find but still I like a parking lot (it's the little things LOL) -- however and thankfully it is totally worth it to have to walk a little from a semi-sketchy street parking spot. I started with an AZ lemon drop cocktail and this was so delicious I could have gulped it down in one sip. My friend had a dirty vodka martini -- they didn't have her type of vodka (which I can't recall what it was) but her martini was still good. Now on to the food -- we started with some small bites, which they kind of don't clearly define which are shareables vs. which are entrees on the menu -- the waitress told us everything below the Yuca & Potato Pave is more of an entree. We had the tomato toast (which may not be on the menu anymore?) and the Yuca & Potato Pave. The tomato toast was so incredibly flavorful but I can't recall what else was on it besides blistered cherry tomatoes -- doesn't matter it was melt in your mouth delicious. Now let's talk about the Yuca & Potato Pave -- this was so amazing! The manchego crema was so silky and rich and the root veggies were crisp yet creamy inside -- if it wasn't such a fancy restaurant I would have licked my plate, LOL. For my entree I had the trout. I don't know if I have had much trout in my life but it was calling my name and I am so glad it did because it was one of the best dishes I have ever had. The trout was light and flaky and the salsa and fresh dill and pickled onions all went together so well. I was truly amazed that I loved the fish that much! We also got a bottle of wine which complemented the dinner and went down very smoothly. Overall I was very impressed with Valentine. It was a bit pricy but well worth the cost. There were so many options for coffees and food. We got empanada, squash sticky bun, and pinon croissant, empanada might be my favorite, cause the sweet pastry were all on the sweeter side, it's hard to eat a whole pastry alone. The steak and eggs was good but not too special, considering the price of food. The special latte we ordered were too sweet too. I typically find food in Arizona to be solidly decent. With few exceptions, there are no real stand out dishes or amazing places to eat. Phoenix and the valley has good restaurants and that's about it. And don't get me started on the chain restaurant mentality here. And then there is Valentine. I was excited to have dinner there last night with friends, although I thought the hype of this restaurant was more instagram famous than it was good. I was mistaken. Greatly mistaken. My friends and I arrived for dinner last night and we were greeted with a wonderful staff and a really cool vibe on the inside. Very casual but not lacking in anything. The service was really great. I love when a server welcomes you to the table and can take the cues when people are having a conversation as opposed to constantly asking," Have you made up your mind?" Our server was fantastic and very accommodating. Sadly I do not remember her name. Now let's talk about the food. We started with three delicious cocktails, the salmon dip and the pretzel. Both were deliciously flavorful. The butter and honey with the pretzel really elevated the pretzel. Great accompaniment. For our mains, we shared the yucca and potato pave, the elote pasta, the ribs, and the trout. All was fantastic, but the real star was the trout. Perfectly cooked, and accompanied by the most impressive rice pilaf. It could stand on the menu by itself. The most important thing for me to point out is that all of these dishes were perfectly seasoned. It is my opinion, and since I'm writing this review, it is the only opinion that counts, almost every single restaurant I've been to in my 11 years of living here do not layer the seasoning, especially salt. They are either so bland the dish has little to no taste, or they pile all seasoning on the top and hope for the best. Valentine stands above the rest. Got some seats at the bar and split the breakfast Sandwhich but definitely could have gotten my own. I wish we tried a pastry, they all looked amazing! Service was on top of it, had lots of employees checking in on us. The place itself is very south western vibes. Their menu is small, and they are pricey. This is definitely a classic restaurant, it's more upscale without feeling too stuffy. But the food is good. I think our server was on break because no one checked on us for 15 min after we sat down, a diff server took our drink order We got the kale caesar which I found to be a little too experimental, I wasn't expecting what I got but it tasted decent. The steak came with beans and 2 small tortillas, it was good but nothing crazy. Elote pasta was our favorite dish, it had crunchy bites and was done very well, but it doesn't come with protein and costs $22 This place was fun but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to anyone or come back read more

The service is lovely and so is the food. I live so close to here and I'm disappointed that I just recently tried it for the first time and I actually haven't been back but I need to. I really enjoyed my time there and the coffee and the Spanish tortilla. I love the place and the decor and the employees. Have to go back soon! read more
