The bar is clean and the surrounding tables and chairs make for a good hangout spot with friends. They do have an extensive menu of drinks to choose from and the bartenders are friendly and efficient. They do offer some desserts and some light bites as well. The restroom is pretty bougie and I'm mad that I didn't get any pics or videos because that has got to be the fanciest toilet I have ever seen in public! Lol You just have to see it for yourself! The self-appointed king of speakeasies is back at it with another one. Located in the Melrose part of Phoenix, I checked out Bar 1912 after having dinner at Valentine (hint, hint: the speakeasy is located inside the restaurant). They have a small parking lot, but it's free and I was able to find a spot on a Friday evening. Ambiance (2.5/5): Speakeasies are known for their sophistication and for their hidden entry. Bar 1912 isn't much of a mystery. There are two entry points. Either a door in the back of the restaurant or a hallway inside the restaurant that's relatively easy to find as there isn't a door or anything in between the restaurant and the speakeasy. Our waiter took us there after our meal. Bar 1912 is nice, but just about average in terms of ambiance compared to other speakeasies. Part of the reason is that it's very loud (seats 30 people or so) and all of the seating at the bar are back-less bar stools (which I personally hate due to my back). I would have preferred to sit on the various couches/sofas next to the bar. Service (4.5/5): Friendly, attentive service. Exactly what you hope for when you're grabbing a drink (especially when they take a little longer to make due to their sophistication). You're provided with water without asking which is always a nice touch. I had to grab the bartender's attention once or twice, but outside of that, a job well done. Food (N/A); Since I had dinner at Valentine prior, I skipped food here. They have a small menu consisting mostly of appetizers (many, but not all, which are offered at Valentine). One option which isn't at Valentine, but which piqued my interest is the Sonoran hot dog. Had I been hungry, it would've been a no brainer. They have four or so desserts on the menu, and I had room for dessert, but none of them seemed appetizing. Drinks (4/5): When I'm at a speakeasy, I look for creativity and an interesting blend of ingredients. You certainly have that here. There's a focus on Native American and Hispanic influences here, which is pretty cool, and fitting since we're in Phoenix and everything. I tried two cocktails, one was a hit and one was a miss. I'm pretty flexible when it comes to cocktails, and I know what I like, so I rarely miss. Unfortunately, it happened here. With that being said, I tried some liqueurs I had never had before which is awesome. And I enjoyed the cocktail menu. This isn't the type of spot you'll find an Espresso Martini...thankfully. This place was so cool. The entrance is easy to find. It's on the side of the building but since th restaurant was closed we weren't able to enter through the back. I absolutely love the atmosphere and it's not high energy. Very relaxed which is great for me. The food was good. We got the basil pesto ice cream and omg. Divine. The pesto ice cream honestly was lije pistachio ice cream. It worked amazing and so refreshing. Underneath was a lemon ice thing that was exquisite and very palate refreshing. It tasted tart and like lemons. Not crunch. Soft ice. One thing though. The drinks weren't bad price. Average for tha area. The only thing is the bar tender made all of our drinks very strong. Most people think that's a good thing but honestly all I could taste was booze. I ordered a whisky sprite (7and7 spoof) and wow I could only taste whiskey. Every sip was booze booze and more booze. For the cocktails I wasn't able to taste any of the ingredients since it was so strong on the alcohol. Definitely moneys worth I guess lol. The bartender though was very nice and knowledgeable about all the drinks. Could explain all the drinks and the different types of alcohol. Not bad. Definitely would come back. Hidden gem over used but true for this spot. We actually drove by it once until we saw some folks coming out of an unmarked door. The staff was lively and friendly which set the stage for a nice evening. The music gave the place a smooth vibe but just the right volume so that you can have conversation. I'm a big fan of the Valentine for coffee and pastries, and 1912 has always stared at me as I walk by everytime. I finally got to give it a try with some friends and absolutely loved the vibe. It was absolutely cozy, with perfect low lighting, mix of southwest and Spanish design. I ordered a carajillo and it was absolutely delish. Not too sweet and the right amount of nutty flavor! Bar 1912 is a cozy little bar with a speakeasy vibe. The only reason I give it 4 stars is the bar seats are annoyingly uncomfortable. I only dipped in because I arrived for a reservation at Valentine 30 mins early so thought I would check it out. It is in the Melrose neighborhood and it does share a parking lot with Valentine but when I got there at 630 on a Friday night I had to find street parking. I sat at the bar and immediately noticed the various pickling jars behind the bar -- apparently they make all their own ingredients for their craft cocktails, which is so cool! I will be back to try more actual items from their menu. This time I just ordered a dirty martini with their house vodka which was nice and light. It was perfectly cold and not overly dirty -- just the way I like it. I tried to read through the menu but my old eyes could not see anything in this very dark bar. They also have two record players and a small assortment of records -- I am not sure if you can play your own or request something but it looked super cute and great idea if you can play something. We arrived right at opening and the bar filled up quickly but the volume still made it easy to have a conversation and still have an intimate night out. The drinks, this time, well balanced and delicious. My wife had the the Pantera Rosa and I had the Last Word. Both were delicious and not overly sweet. I love a good "Last Word" but the tea added a welcome and subtle layer. A nicely created cocktail without shaming the original. came here for a nightcap w my brother and sister-in-law! this is one of my fav spots to hit in the valley, they have the best (sonoran-inspired) drinks. there's truly something for everybody. for drinks, my brother got the hot champurrado (basically a spiked hot chocolate, one of my favorite cocktails on the menu, if not ever), my sister-in-law got their whiskey sour (delicious & refreshing), and i got the baja-blasted high baller (mezcal based, mountain dew, there was something else but i can't remember, and an "electric sugar" rim - SO! GOOD! inspired by taco bell's baja blast hahahah). they TREATED us to all three of their current desserts on the menu. it was the most pleasant surprise i could've imagined. my favorite was the flourless chocolate cake! it was like a thick, rich brownie, had passion fruit cream to "lighten it up" and a caramel-like taffy on the bottom my brother and sister-in-law both said their favorite was the gulab jamun (which is basically like little fried dough balls/donuts, influenced by indian flavors and spices). the mille-feuille was also fantastic - the pastry was light and airy, cream wasn't too sweet and also very light, shaved cheese on top made it have a savory bite, and the jam alongside it was strawberry rhubarb. service is always amazing, friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable; it seems like everybody working here truly enjoys it. quite literally already have a reservation booked at valentine and will be coming back here beforehand. update: came back for more drinks (fernet & coke, spaghett western, negroni) and their lamb flauta. all AMAZING! and amazing order to whet the appetite before dinner at valentine. read more

Really loved my time at Bar 1912, my birthday twin and I were treating ourselves to a night cap after a spectacular dinner. This is a hidden gem behind the Valentine and we loved the vibe of it all. Felt posh but casual but swanky but elevated but open and inclusive and just really nice. Our server had some great suggestions for the drink menu and it was pretty extensive. Lots of unique drinks and ones that feel special to the state, of course, with some cactus and prickly pear feels. I had a version of a martini and it was SPLENDID. So smooth and delectable. My pair had the pappy van winkle and the okayama which are rare to have at just any bar, and tender to the pocket book so you know they have some serious selection. But damn if I have ever had that smooth a bourbon... ‍ The music was such a cool rotation of genres and there was such a mix of people and styles. It was just so nice to enjoy our drinks there. I love this secret spot tucked behind Valentine. It has a speakeasy feel, and you enter through a back door inside of the café. The vibe is very hipster, underground PHX, and they spin vinyl some nights. The service is polished and attentive. I'm obsessed with the vibe here! Service was great, the bartenders were so chill and knowledgeable. I'm currently still dreaming of the Cotton cocktail which is a pistachio drink with this yummy cotton candy fluff on top. I loved it so much! I believe we also tried the Copper, Cattle and Grassland drinks and all of them were super well balanced and lovely. They also have food available for a bit from Valentine next door. We got the Tres Leches cake (if I remember correctly) and it was nice. While the food at Valentine is not my all time favorite, I do think that it pairs really well with the drinks here. This place definitely won't be for everyone, but it was quiet, low key, the drinks were interesting and unique, and the music was great. It was dimly lit with a fire in the back. My husband and I came here for drinks before dinner. We didn't order any food although food is served until 11pm. The ambiance is that of a modern Spanish or Greek style. We came around 6:30pm and the lights were dim but not too dim to wear these 40 year eyes of mine needed to pull out a light to see the menu. Props to having records playing and the nice deck and record collection setup!! Love this and wish more places would actually play records for their in house music. 1912 was the year Arizona became a state. The theme continues into the drinks celebrating the 5 C's: Citrus, Copper, Cattle, Climate, and Cotton. There are other cocktails, but those are the staples. My friends and I had a ton of drinks here while waiting for our table. I absolutely loved my Cotton, it had pistachio cotton candy with real pistachios! Egg whites which adds to the dreamy and creamy perfection with olorosso sherry and a touch of lemon. I'm a huge pistachio fan so this was a delight. Other cocktails are based on Arizona's climates/biomes: Desert, Chaparral, Forest, Tundra, Woodland, and Grassland. My friends enjoyed the Grassland which had Navajo tea, sotol & blanco tequila, green chartreuse, lime, and chiltepin-sumac salt. Everything from the fireplace, to the lighting, to the chill music made for a very relaxing and sexy mood and atmosphere here. Pricing is reasonable. I took a lady here on a Sunday night (we have weird work schedules BUT Bar 1912 is open until late on Sunday nights!). We were welcomed by the staff and quickly seated at a cozy table (1 booth seat, 1 chair) - I really loved the look of the place. The menu shows a rather small list of their cocktails, which I prefer since menus with huge selections overwhelm me. I ordered a bourbon-based drink while my date selected a tequila drink. We ended up ordering a total of 3 rounds, which included a delicious espresso martini! We also shared one of their deserts, which was excellent. This bar has all the mid-modern, minimalist vibes. Shades of white and cream couple with records playing to make for a lovely date night. Drinks were decent but seemed overpriced. If you take anything away from this review, it is this: you must get the pretzel. The Pretzel: holy smokes. I'm going to try to this Justice. The pretzels (two medium sized) are deep fried resulting in an incredibly satisfying crunchy exterior with a lovely, soft, not too dense, chewy interior. They're made fresh and come out piping hot, which coincidentally makes for a beautiful base on which to layer the umami rich butter and decadent honeycomb. Ingredients are local. I've been raving about this, and it'll probably one of the dishes I recommend to anybody who asks (or who doesn't). Drinks: 15-20 per drink. This is unfortunately getting to be more and more the standard throughout the valley. They were fine, but didn't wow me. I can't even remember what I ordered. My husband got the marrow washed cocktail. It had a pretty unique taste, but for $20, I dunno, I wanted more out of it. The drink value is one of the reasons why 1912 a 4/5 for me. Hidden on the side of our esteemed Valentine lies a speakeasy aiming to represent the pride we feel for the natural beauty and geographical diversity of Arizona. The draw of our five 'C's. The freedom we feel when we can enjoy a desert and the mountains in the same day. It's patriotism, but for our state. And not in that weird, MAGA way. Bar 1912 pulls together an assortment of house-made tinctures and syrups, mixing them with high-quality spirits and herbs to produce a journey for your palate. And the atmosphere is fine too, demonstrating the powers of cozy and intimate accent lighting. Lighting along the underside of the bar, behind your table. And then there's the finishing touches. A fireplace. A modest vinyl setup spinning near the entrance. Let me tell you--I was drinking in *style* This is what I had: Copper. A Moscow Mule with matcha. Matcha is a mild flavor, so I was excited to see how they'd try to make it shine. I can't say it did. Mine came out flat and cloyingly sweet. Yes, I could taste some matcha, but at the cost of everything else. Forest. A wine and whiskey blend, with rosemary and the star of the show--pine. My mixologist began flairtending as though we were as excited to make this as I was to drink it. I am no stranger to burnt rosemary or sage in my drinks, and I invite it, but there is too much of a good thing. The largest sprig of rosemary I'd ever seen in a drink overpowered the other floral notes that could have made this drink unique. It was still OK. Tundra: Wine cocktails truly are underrated, and kudos to them for pulling it off so well--a mix of riesling, sherry, and spirulina honey. Sweet all the way down, hints of spice and oak. Lovely. It's by far the prettiest to gaze at in your hand. The coarse salt on the side did nothing special for me in terms of taste, but something about the way it shimmered, and the way the whisky stones shined at the bottom of the glass made this look distinguished to me. Overall, Bar 1912 really understands how we want to feel when we enter a cocktail bar. We want authenticity, we want class, and we want to feel like we're doing something special for ourselves and our friends. That immeasurable warmth comes through. Atmosphere--amazing. Service--good. Drinks? Brave, if not quirky, but leaving quite a bit of room for refinement.
