Banh Mi White Fish Sandwich - underseasoned, underdressed unfortunately
    Chris B.

I'm reluctantly giving Windsor only three stars, because I can tell that they serve a creative menu with quality food, but I must hold them accountable for some missteps. I knew nothing about this restaurant before trying it for the first time, but I was in the area and decided to pop in. The place was busy but I instantly found a free spot at the bar, as I was dining solo. I had called earlier since this was a Friday prior to a national holiday on Saturday, so I wanted to make sure they were open. It was nearly noontime, so I was still considering breakfast/brunch fare, but they informed me that brunch was only a weekend thing. The regular menu still looked enticing, so I decided lunch would do fine. I was eyeballing the Reuben and the Porkwich, but settled on the lighter choice of the Banh Mi White Fish Sandwich. I ended up being a bit disappointed in the food. Let me say that the flavor of the soy-honey glaze on the halibut was delicious and the bread was soft and pillowy. However, I could not detect a hint of spice, even though it says the sandwich has sambal mayo on it. Honestly, I could barely detect the soy-honey glaze and one side of the bread had no dressing on it whatsoever. I think the kitchen failed in its execution here... without a decent slather of the sambal mayo or enough of the soy-honey glaze, what could have been a delicious dining experience was instead a very bland sandwich. Deduct one star. I tried to course correct by asking for Tabasco, which the bartender readily provided. That improved things slightly. So I asked for soy sauce, figuring that would elevate this otherwise underseasoned, underdressed sandwich. The bartender said they only had fish sauce, which I said would be fine. Then he brought me malt vinegar, which I pointed out to him wasn't fish sauce at all. He just shrugged. I made do with this condiment but this was nowhere near the sandwich it could have been, and the bartender's inability to empathize that this menu item was subpar was not helpful. Deduct another star. So, I'm not knocking the menu, the service, or the atmosphere. It was happy hour on a holiday weekend and quite busy, so maybe that was a factor. I would like to come back and try some of the other tasty-looking entrees, or even stop in for brunch on Saturday and Sunday. But I have to say that my initial experience with Windsor fell short.

What a pleasant surprise for a stop for an afternoon lunch! This place has an awesome ambiance, retro mixed with urban vibe. And cocktails, beer, and wine $6 all day!! I had a No. 88 and it was pretty and delicious. Service was a 10! Super friendly servers Miles and Melissa! The food was amazing- I had kebobs and my friend had the mahi sandwich. Just a fun, upbeat atmosphere with the coolest decor! A retro cassette wall was my favorite. The bar area, patio, and dining area were all open, not too noisy and music great! I can't wait to return to try the deviled egg dip and chips as well as the fish and chips (which I heard is the best around).

My first time ordering Windsor on Uber Eats and it was worth every dollar. While some items weren't my personal favorite, the main items were so good. The Windsor Chicken Sammie and the grilled chicken kabobs are an easy 5/5--incredibly moist, flavorful, and well-portioned. Plus the Fattoush salad with that dressing was absolutely amazing for you olive lovers. The devil egg dip, as oddly as this sounds, was overflavored. It's a great concept and I'm sure somebody would love it, just not me. Now for the Mac and cheese, it's hard to get a good one while dining out. But, at least I could tell there was seasoning on the pasta. Maybe some onion and garlic powder is what I tasted? Lastly, the chocolate crinkle for dessert is for those who love chocolate and aren't monitoring the sugar content. It was gooey, chewy, and oh so yummy!

I've been to the Windsor a handful of times over the years and am always impressed with the diversity of the menu. My most recent visit was for a quick lunch break. From brunch, lunch and dinner - the menu has a great variety and hearty portions to keep you fueled.

What a fun time celebrating my sister Mary's birthday! We got there early for Happy Hour and had delicious $6 cocktails. Kyle was a great server and kept his eye on us all evening. Mary had a giant platter of yummy loaded chips, and went for the whitefish bahn mi. Not remotely disappointing! And Mary had a complimentary ice cream sundae to boot. I've never been disappointed here and will continue returning for great food, stupendous service and unabashed inclusion

Last year, I came here to at lunch with a friend, and their menu had great variety. This past weekend, I came here for brunch with my girls, and I think their brunch options are limited. For my order, I think it was a bit unseasoned, but I like my bacon and sausage link. However, thinks we're good, and they were $6 - that's a steal! I think their lunch/dinner options are better. Other than that, the servers are so funny, kind, and outgoing! They were respectful to my friends and I !

I checked out Windsor and Churn on a Saturday around noon, during their happy hour! Amazing deals for their drinks! and even though it was packed, the vibe was honestly so good. I sat at the bar and the bartenders were amazing--super kind, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. The cocktail drinks were really well done, definitely a highlight. We also tried the butter pecan with shortcake slices and everything was delicious. You can tell they really care about quality and flavor. Even with the crowd, it felt lively in a fun way, not overwhelming. Overall, such a great spot if you're looking for good drinks, desserts, and a solid vibe. I'll definitely be back for the same thing plus their food I've been here before as well and they're food doesn't disappoint either

OMG this spot is a must try! Nestled away in Phoenix is this amazing place where refreshing yummy cocktails match with the most amazing patio. Come for brunch. Come for dinner but above all come for happy hour! As a cocktail snob--I will say wholeheartedly--the cocktails are delicious. I ordered a No. 2 and No. 37. I came with a girlfriend to catch up--sat on the patio with refreshing bevies, the most delightful green salad, and ended our lunch with a scoop of ice cream from Churn. The service was amazing. The staff were all attentive. The vibe and ambiance is a 100. Do your self a favor and check this place out!

Windsor has such a chill vibe. I absolutely LOVE this place for date nights and brunch! Great music, great service, and food that is more delicious than you'd ever imagine!! I always love the chef/bartender choice options. For today I went with a glass of Sauvignon blanc and my husband was delighted to see a porter beer on the menu. My hubby got the porkwich and I decided on the banh mi white fish sandwich. Both were absolutely incredibly and full of flavor! We ALWAYS get the sweet potato fries as they're super yummy! It's a must try place for sure!

Back to Windsor after some time and man, what a disappointment. The service was soooooo slow then after food came non existent. It's got great decor but the booth seats need to redone they are very springy. Getting our bill was rough. I just feel if you're not slamming drinks they overlook you.

Windsor Chicken Sammie with the chicken missing...

I recommended this place to my coworkers for our team holiday get together as I had it bookmarked for a while and it was near a nonprofit that we volunteered at. Our table was reserved and ready to go for us on the patio. The patio was really nice, and we were happy with the space that we had. I ordered the Picnic Kebabs and an Arnold Palmer. Since the lemonade is fresh, it was very good! With the kebabs you get a skewer of chicken, pork, shrimp, and farm vegetables with harissa aïoli, gold sauce, hummus, and grilled pita. It was tasty and I loved the gold sauce, especially. The veggie and shrimp skewer were my favorites! Quite a few of my coworkers ordered the Windsor Chicken Sammie, as that was recommended as the most popular dish. One of my coworkers received his Sammie without the chicken on it! Our server was on it and she was somewhat embarrassed. The manager didn't come to take it away from the table and redo the sandwich, but came out a few minutes later, with the chicken on a plate. The manager just expected my coworker to plop it on his naked sandwich. No apology, and no accommodations were done by the manager for the error or the inconvenience! Strangely unprofessional and hence the deduction of two stars! All in all, it was a decent experience, but definitely will not be on the top of my list to return!

Windsor is one of those restaurants that just have it all! From the ample seating to the extensive menu, my friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The server we had was super attentive and made sure to check in with us many times despite a busy restaurant. We had a girl dinner - diet coke, fries, and 2 caesar salads. The fries were unexpectedly the star of the show - definitely get the ranch. The caesar was really good too, but could've used more dressing. Would definitely return!

The second one tasted "clean" or like it was supposed to taste. The Burger & Fish Tacos were full of flavor & freshness! I loved their fries b/c crispy on outside & soft on the outside. Missing their Guac & Chips Starter that was on former menu tho. We gotta commend the F&B Manager here! He overheard us talking to the waiter about the differences in the Charred Beet Salads & told us why: one was on the grill too long & he only knew that b/c he was in the kitchen watching them make it. He appreciated us sharing about the nuanced difference in how salads tasted & comped one. Wow - this is really going above & beyond: caring enough to have a convo w/ diners, acknowledging their palates detecting the difference AND making it right, b/c as he said "both should taste the same, like the second one." A commitment to excellence and consistency is a rarity. Overall, Lylo Swim Club outdoor bar/restaurant is a little oasis tucked away amongst so much greenery and beauty! Just keep an eye on how much you're spending! There's a lot of spots for improvement here, but I'd also say that Lylo is one of the few businesses I've ever seen do such a visually-great escape out from their pool area. If you're here for the escape and temper your expectations for food or drink, I think you'd have a good time. There are a TON of mosquitos here, so prepare accordingly. The bar and hotel lobby didn't have bug spray nor any for sale. The nearby liquor store does have some for sale at less than a block's walk. (The pool is hot mid Phoenix summer. The pool itself felt closer to a hot tub than a refreshingly cold pool. I'm told this is normal for pools in Arizona in the summer.) PROS: -All of the drinks are really pretty, visually, and with the pool, you have a great mecca for social media photos. -Despite the ridiculous 110+ Phoenix heat, we were relatively comfortable in the shaded restaurant area with the misters. We could still see the pool, but we weren't baking alive. -Pool bathrooms were clean enough. There were lots of puddles and toilet paper on the ground, but nothing was horrific or moldy like some pool bathrooms can be. Spacious stalls for changing too - though I didn't see any shower or changing areas. -The pool area itself is pretty! It makes for gorgeous Instagram photos, and Lylo knows that. There are lots of little spots (a camp sign, a chair off on its own, all the loungers, etc.) that make cute photo backdrops in addition to the pool itself. -There is a collection of inflatable pool toys in the corner that seem to be open for guest use. CONS: -Water bottles are not allowed at all - not even sealed disposable plastic ones from the grocery store. They'll store them for you, and you can fetch your own water with disposable plastic cups while you're here. -The misters in the pool area were broken. With the heat, we chose not to actually use the pool, and instead stayed in the restaurant, shaded area with misters. -All of the on-menu drinks are pretty sweet and not super boozy (at their price points). It's easy to go through quite a few at their higher price. Make sure that you're spending intentionally. -We weren't in love with the food we ordered. It felt like frozen food reheated and served to us. To be fair, that's about to be expected from a pool bar, but it was still something to note at the prices and with nearby restaurants walkable. -Service is there. I wouldn't say it was friendly or welcoming, but the servers checked in often in-between talking to people in swimsuits or joking with friends. I rarely waited for anything, but I didn't feel like a valued guest. -The fabric of the chaise loungers and lounge beds are stained. I saw some employees hauling off some of them and shoving them into the back of a fabric cleaning van, so I'd assume they rotate in and out and have to deal with a ton of spilled drinks.

The soothing decor and soft lighting created a cozy atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for a delightful meal, especially on an unseasonably hot day. We began our culinary journey with the Larb Mushroom appetizer, and it was nothing short of spectacular. The dish featured succulent oyster mushrooms tossed with roasted rice powder, fresh mint, shallots, cilantro, and a vibrant chili-lime dressing. Each bite was a refreshing explosion of flavors, combining the earthy richness of the mushrooms with the zesty brightness of the dressing. It was light, refreshing, and a perfect precursor to the meal ahead. For her main dish, my wife chose the Pad Z U, an outstanding selection that showcased sautéed broad noodles, crispy fried tofu, and Chinese broccoli, all enveloped in a delectable sweet soy sauce. The noodles were soft and chewy, creating a delightful texture that harmonized beautifully with the vegetable medley and tofu. The heat in the dish was skillfully balanced, providing just enough kick without overwhelming the palate. My wife couldn't stop raving about it! I opted for the Kua Kling, and it truly was a star of the evening. This spicy stir-fried minced chicken was enriched with fragrant curry paste, lemongrass, and kaffir lime leaves, resulting in an aromatic dish that was accompanied by tender long string beans and the unique Sadtor beans. The flavor profile was complex and enticing, with each ingredient complementing the others in a delightful dance of spice and freshness. It was a dish that not only warmed my belly but also left me craving more. What elevated our experience even further was the attentiveness of our server. With a genuine smile and a welcoming demeanor, they offered excellent recommendations and ensured that we were well taken care of throughout our meal. Their knowledge of the menu added to our enjoyment, making the dining experience even more memorable. Overall, LeDu Thai is a culinary treasure that I cannot recommend highly enough. Each dish was exceptional, bursting with flavor and crafted with care. The combination of delicious food, attentive service, and a cozy ambiance makes it a must-visit for anyone seeking an unforgettable Thai dining experience. GOOD! inspired by taco bell's baja blast hahahah). they TREATED us to all three of their current desserts on the menu. it was the most pleasant surprise i could've imagined. my favorite was the flourless chocolate cake! it was like a thick, rich brownie, had passion fruit cream to "lighten it up" and a caramel-like taffy on the bottom my brother and sister-in-law both said their favorite was the gulab jamun (which is basically like little fried dough balls/donuts, influenced by indian flavors and spices). the mille-feuille was also fantastic - the pastry was light and airy, cream wasn't too sweet and also very light, shaved cheese on top made it have a savory bite, and the jam alongside it was strawberry rhubarb. service is always amazing, friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable; it seems like everybody working here truly enjoys it. quite literally already have a reservation booked at valentine and will be coming back here beforehand. update: came back for more drinks (fernet & coke, spaghett western, negroni) and their lamb flauta. all AMAZING! and amazing order to whet the appetite before dinner at valentine.

I absolutely love the atmosphere and it's not high energy. Very relaxed which is great for me. The food was good. We got the basil pesto ice cream and omg. Divine. The pesto ice cream honestly was lije pistachio ice cream. It worked amazing and so refreshing. Underneath was a lemon ice thing that was exquisite and very palate refreshing. It tasted tart and like lemons. Not crunch. Soft ice. One thing though. The drinks weren't bad price. Average for tha area. The only thing is the bar tender made all of our drinks very strong. Most people think that's a good thing but honestly all I could taste was booze. I ordered a whisky sprite (7and7 spoof) and wow I could only taste whiskey. Every sip was booze booze and more booze. For the cocktails I wasn't able to taste any of the ingredients since it was so strong on the alcohol. Definitely moneys worth I guess lol. The bartender though was very nice and knowledgeable about all the drinks. Could explain all the drinks and the different types of alcohol. Not bad. Definitely would come back. Super cute for date night or a small gathering night out since space wise isn't huge.

Heck yeah. For brunch, we were treated to a complementary squash sticky bun. This was delish, highly recommend. I also ordered the masa almond tea cake. The flavor of this was yummy but it wasn't evenly distributed. The cake was kind of dry and flavorless on the outside and moist on the inside. For my meal, I got the Tres leches French toast. Do not get this unless you're like me and have a major sweet tooth. I think this was one of the sweetest meals I've ever had, it was basically slathered in syrup. V yummy. It was fun to explore the vintage store after. It was a great way to walk off a big brunch and discover some cool pieces. If you're looking for a brunch spot in Phoenix, highly recommend Valentine. FYI: no parking lot, street parking only.

For way too long Valentine was sitting on my list of places to try. We had family visiting from…read moreCali and they know one of servers working there, so they asked if I have been, I said no but I would love to go. I always planned to go for dinner, I didn't even know they were open for brunch. Well now I do, and it was SO delicious that I would like to come back to try other menu items. The ambiance of Valentine is like being in Palm Springs at a resort enjoying brunch. It's very mid-century modern and I love the decor. They have a large outdoor patio that is probably nice when it's not summer. We sat inside and noticed there is a vintage market (Modern Manor) attached to the restaurant, we went there after eating. (A cute place with some pricey items. I'll post a separate review of the store.) Our server Pete, he was exceptional. He knows my cousins' husband and he gave us the grand tour of the menu. His recommendations were spot on, and we wanted for nothing. We started with handcrafted drinks, I really enjoyed the coffee menu options, with unique flavors. I had the iced Cajeta latte with oat milk. Cajeta is like a Mexican caramel and was very good with espresso. I also tried the chiltepin shakerato (a slight spicy mocha) and golden milk (turmeric latte). I really liked all of them. Then we had a fantastic sampler plate of pastries-- piñon croissant, morning swirl, and churro croissant roll. Baked fresh, these are really great! My fave was the morning swirl. I would come back to try the other pastries alone. Next we had the chula seafood crudo with a delicious agua chile sauce. Then onto our entrees-- avocado toast, breakfast sando, tortilla espanola, tres leche French toast, tater tots, and for good measure the Sonoran dog. I was able to try all the dishes and everything was awesome. The toast used is a thick Texas toast type of bread that is called squash brioche-- so good! Everything tasted fresh and flavorful, you can tell that Valentine cares about using fresh, local, high quality/ interesting ingredients with unique flavors. I mean they add trout roe to their Sonoran dog and serve with house made allium-nori chips... how fun is that?! And mesquite-pecan butter with sorghum-sage syrup for the French toast is so rich and sweet. That's a dessert type brunch dish for sure. We had so much food, we couldn't finish so we boxed up leftovers which heated up and tasted great the next day. I fully intend to come back for the dinner menu and have cocktails at Bar 1912. I look forward to it.

I first came across Don Woods' Say When reading a Yelp article listing out the best rooftops in…read moreeach state. Don Woods was Arizona's pick. For quite a few months, I had it on my list to visit. I finally made things happen on a Wednesday evening for a drink. Located on the roof (of course) of a boutique hotel, I find free parking in the hotel's parking lot. While it was a busy parking lot, I was able to find a spot. Unfortunately, my night consisted of a comedy of errors. Ambiance (3/5): When you think best rooftop in the state, you're thinking scenic and peaceful views. Don Woods' certainly has that, though I've seen better in Phoenix. You can see the mountains in the background, but that's about it. The hotel is located on a busy street, where you'll often hear the noise of cars buzzing by or the train choo-chooing. Did I just make up a word?! I imagine the best time to stop by is during sunset. The outdoor area is relatively narrow with seating for about 20-30 people. It's a mix of comfortable seats and tables/chairs. There's also a charming indoor area, where the bar is located, but I felt like I had to sit outside. The weather was perfect, too. Service (2.5/5): This is where the comedy of errors began. I was given a menu and some water and was left to peruse the menu. Before the waitress had returned, I had picked out an appetizer and a cocktail. I then discovered that their cook had quit the other week and as a result, no food was available. That's fine and all, but you've gotta give me a heads-up when giving me the menu. That way, I wouldn't have spent the time to look over the food menu and get my heart set on a particular dish. On a better note, they have free WiFi. And service was overall friendly and pretty efficient. Food (N/A): While I was unable to order some food, on most nights, they have a small menu of small plates. More of a snack type of spot then a full meal type of establishment. Drinks (3/5): Don Woods is know for its cocktails and they have a list of 10 or so craft cocktails. Plus, beer, wine, and the typical options that you would find when there's a full bar. I feel like the bartender messed up the proportions on my cocktail as it was a bit rough. One drink and I was out. It seems like Don Woods' is experiencing some turnover which is leading to some mishaps. Combine that with some high expectations given the accolades they won, and it was the recipe for a disaster. I love a good rooftop bar, so I was hoping for more at Don Woods' Say When. Even the lobby of the hotel was experiencing issues. They sell popsicles in the lobby but the guy temporarily manning the front desk didn't know how to get their Square device working. Which ended up meaning no appetizers for me at Don Woods and no popsicles from the lobby. Two strikes. We live to fight another day.

Upon walking in, the place was packed and we stood in line at the bar for standing room only. The bartenders were friendly and the cocktail list was pretty interesting. Both of the drinks we got off the menu were bitter and NOT sweet, which is bad news for me cause I love a sweet drink! lol The bartender was able to make me a lychee mojito after I asked specifically for any flavored syrups they had. She was very sweet to check what flavors they have and gave me several different options. My boyfriend got some whiskey and they gave a hefty pour. We ended up snagging some seats at the bar and ordered two slices of pepperoni pizza. Love that you can buy slices individually here, including cheese pep and dill pickle - how fun, will definitely try this next time! Overall, nice chill dive bar with good food and drinks. Ambiance is very moody but fun. They also have old school darts! We'll be back :)
