The sausage rice was very satisfying. When I went inside, there were way too many waiters hanging around. After we were seated, the waiters kept hanging around our table just because we were teenagers. I brought a winter cup that I treasured very much and they thought I brought outside food, but it was empty. They started laughing at me just because I brought my favorite cup. What made me even more confused was when they wrapped my cup in a plastic bag. Just because my friend and I were teenagers, they seemed to treat with less respect than they would with older customers. Still a great place for Taiwanese food! They have great icee/slushee options that, depending on the flavor, either have flecks of real fruit or pieces of jelly! There seems to always be a horrendous wait, so take-away is a faster and convenient option if you're in a rush. The shaved ice is still a big draw, but one complaint is how the condensed milk is not included with the order - it counts as one of the five included toppings. WTH! Condensed milk on shaved ice is practically a birth right. Oh well. Life ain't perfect, but the food here is pretty darn close to it. read more

Sinbala is pretty good for their Taiwanese food. Their drinks are "okay" but would definitely say that you can get better boba and tea around the area. Their most popular dish is the "sausage rice plate" that comes with Taiwanese sausage, rice, and some sides such as corn or scrambled eggs. This place is almost ALWAYS crowded, especially on the weekends during lunch time. Little by little, I grow more in love with Taiwanese food. Oh, who am I kidding. I'm married to someone that is Taiwanese. I am being FORCED to love it. Not that I mind, though. Taiwanese food is comforting in its simplicity. There is a flavor or a preparation to it that I enjoy time and time again, regardless of what dish is set in front of me. I felt that way about each and every meal I ate when I visited Taiwan in 2008--so whenever I get the chance to eat at a Taiwanese restaurant here in the US, I jump for it. SinBala has all the favorites--green onion pancake, popcorn chicken (listed as 'chicken nuggets' on the menu), spicy beef noodle soup. It also has food items for the adventurous (Taiwanese sausage with mango, whaaaa?). Since it was our first time at the restaurant, we played it safe and got the Taiwanese sausage rice plate and the Taiwanese version of jajangmyeon. The sausage... you MUST try it. Delicious. If you order just the sausage it comes with thin slices of raw garlic, which are a nice contrast to the sweetness of the sausage. If you ordered the plate like we did, the eggs with the sausage are heavenly. The eggs are a little sweet, just like the sausage, but the slightly-runny texture was a hit with us. The jajangmyeon was nothing like Korean jajangmyeon--mixed with julienned cucumbers and a meat sauce that had chili oil in it. But it was very delicious as well, and filling to boot. My husband also ordered shaved ice with grass jelly, almond jelly & ai-yu (jelly fig is the weird translation for this)--and it came with tang yuen, or glutinous rice balls! It was like he died and went to heaven (or Taiwan). He finished it by himself, no joke. The only thing that wasn't a home run with me was the oyster pancake, which became a favorite of mine in Taipei. The tomato sauce was just like I remembered it, but they skimped on the oysters. Sad. And the chicken nuggets were just okay, nothing to write home about. But everything else was so delicious that I didn't mind. And with most dishes at $7 or less? Definitely coming back when I'm in the area! The wait for us, especially as a table of 8, was about 30-40 minutes? But the night was temperate and mild, and I spent the whole time talking and laughing with friends, so it went by very fast. The waiter let us order in advance and had the food ready RIGHT as we sat down. So I would recommend this place if you are fed up with Din Tai Fung's wait... and would like to cut your wait time in half. (You'll still wait, but not as long. Ha.) Warning: Going on a Saturday night may be hazardous for your car when trying to find a parking spot. Their parking lot is a slow, confused battlefield. You have been warned. read more

Of course it doesn't compare to the wait over at DTF (Din Tai Fung, in case some of you are wondering wtf...yes, that's what it's called for short!) but I've always wonder what was so good about SinBala. I waited and tasted, and the verdict? It is worth the wait! Especially for the price and amount of food you get. Even the menu is deceiving (in a good way). We ordered the pumpkin rice noodle thinking it was a smaller dish since it was listed under "snacks" but boy were we wrong! It could have been a meal in itself! Since we didn't know that, we also ordered the eel rice and vegetarian dumplings. Both were a winner. I would say their specialty are the sausages so definitely try that if you come. After your meal, top it off with a taiwanese slush.
