I think I just had my most pleasantly surprising meal in a long time! I truly hate to judge a book by its cover, but honestly, the exterior of this place is nothing special. However, once you get inside, the food they serve is truly impressive. We tried the beef noodles and the dumplings (both excellent, as expected), but the real standout was the cold noodles. They were absolutely novel! I hadn't tasted anything quite like them before, and they were an utter delight. I loved everything I got to eat from LaoXi Noodle House recently. It was worth the trek out there to try out their stir fried noodles, dumplings, and the trio appetizers. My favorite was the pork and leek dumplings. It was exactly like the ones I grew up eating in Beijing and very similar in taste and texture to what I make at home. Talk about taste of home!!! Totally nailed it. Another of my favorite was their stir fried noodles. Normally I dislike them because I feel like it has not enough chew to it. Loved the ones from LaoXi as it had not only a nice chew but the woodear mushrooms, cabbage, and the eggs nicely complimented the dish as textural contrasts. The appetizers were also delicious. I'm not a big fan of cold sliced beef but my mom enjoyed it and she loved the shredded potatoes. My favorite was the cucumber salad. Another worthy mention is how efficient and friendly the service we received. She patiently explained and recommended exactly what we would enjoy and everything hit the mark. The ambiance here is casual and family friendly. Some were dining with friends, some solo and others there for takeouts. Family run restaurant. Very clean and comfortable and the food was served very quickly. Had the Wife Special Noodles and the green onion pancake. The noodles definitely have a unique flavor with a springy noodles mixed with fried pork, egg, tomatoes, & a fermented bean sauce with cool cucumbers. The pancakes were crispy and solid. Also, this place is one of the cheaper Michelin star restaurants in the area and the articles on the wall back that up. Definitely coming back to try the rest of the menu. read more

Came here after seeing an Instagram review. This is easily a memorable noodle dish for me in the SGV. I can't think of many offhand. It was an unassuming corner, they don't even have the full LaoXi sign in English. I had to think about my Chinese characters to make sure I was going to the right place. Apparently, they have two locations and this is the smaller one. I went at 2pm and walked in expecting it to be very busy but there was no one there. No one at the cash register. I had to lean in to see a woman who was washing dishes to let her know I was here. She was very friendly. With a smile on her face. My Chinese is bad and I couldn't really understand her English well, but I already got the sense that I was going to be taken care of. I ordered the Wife's Noodle. It came out in about 5 minutes and here are my thoughts: This is 3 dishes in one. Braised beef dry noodle, tomato and egg, and zhajiangmian. You wouldn't think that they all go together but it did. The pork was tender and flavorful, the minced pork sauce had a deep rich soy flavor, and the tomato/egg sauce was nicely acidic and help to balance the saltiness of the soy sauce. The sliced cucumber added a refreshing crisp to everything along with a crunchy texture. Let's talk about the noodles. The instagram review I saw called them bouncy. I kind of understand what they mean but I don't know if that's the term I'd use. They were chewy. I was expecting them to be softer (not because I like them that way, but usually that's how most places prepare noodles I feel) but they were chewy in a good way. You feel like you're eating noodles, rather than just biting into them and swallowing them if that makes any sense. Maybe elasticity is a better word. Anyway, despite zero customers being there, I loved the dish. I ate it all. And I felt good, satisfied, and did not feel gross and sluggish. Michelin Guide restaurant in the 626! Super affordable and delicious too, making it a must stop, especially if you are a noodle enjoyer. It's located at a pretty low key plaza and the interior of the restaurant is pretty minimal and laid back as well. Don't let this deter you though, since the food is top tier. We got the: 1) Wife Special Noodle: -A MUST get if you go here. -They are known for this dish, and it has a cute lore story as well. Apparently the wife in the husband and wife team made it for them and it was love at first bite! -It comes with 3 sauces on top that you mix together: bean sauce, ground pork, and tomato with egg. There's also bok choy for some greens too. -The noodles are he lao style and have a yummy chewy texture to them that absorbs all the flavors deliciously well. I love tomato egg and I'm a fan of the other sauces, so this is the best of all 3 worlds. 2) Buckwheat Noodle in Lamb Soup: -This is Mao Er'duo Style or Cat Ear style because the noodles are pasta in the shape of cat ears! Very cute and tasty with how chewy they are too, -There's a generous amount of lamb cubes in the soup and it's not too gamey tasting like other lamb dishes. -The soup is also hearty and thick with wood ear and button mushrooms as well as glass noodles. -It's not appetizer soup by any means, it's a good full meal soup that you can share. 3) Fried Intestines with Hot Chili: -I don't usually eat intestines, but I'll partake if someone else orders the dish. This is generous portion and it's not too chewy or has that strong "offal" taste that turns me off of some other organ meats. -It's nicely steeped in hot chili oil for taste and it's cooked with some greens as well. Everything is great we always go for beef noodle soup as our 3 kids love lao xi's noodles and their cat ears, the wood ears are also amazingly fresh with tasty marinate. Intestine dish and noodles are both excellent as well! We've been coming here for years and the owners are extremely friendly and accomondating, great place to bring family and friends, we brought anywhere between 5 to 12 before. So we had a party of 5, most tables were 2-4 but they had one round table that could fit more, but since it was in the corner it was pretty much bets for five so the half table is on the side of other tables. We sat down and water was self serve which is. Ice so we don't have to wait on a server. Our hostess came and took our order, she knew some English but we ordered in mandarin. We ordered wood eat mushroom, cucumber salad (looks spicy but isn't spicy), cold beef slices, wife's special noodles, and beef soup noodles. They were all great. The wife's special noodles was such a nice portion, it consisted of three flavors in a bowl with cucumbers. My favorite was tomato and egg, the meat pieces were delicious, and the noodles were steamy hot and chewy. The broth of the beef noodle soup looked bland but it was flavorful, however, our family usually likes it spicy so they had chili oil on the table which added a nice spicy flavor. And noodle/Northern Chinese cuisine, hole in the wall type cafe located in a strip mall that feels to be on the outskirts of the Arcadia area (I'm not from the area and not super familiar). I came here for dinner by myself early in the week, and there was plenty of parking in the lot. The place itself feel small and cozy. I was sat down right away from a friendly person who greeted me when I walked through the door. This place feels like a family run type shop. I ordered pretty quickly and the food came out pretty quickly as well. I ordered the Wife Special Noodles and scallion pancakes. It seems like this or the beef noodle soup is what they're known for. I had beef noodle soup the day before, so I wanted something different. I'm glad I tried this. The noodles or super tasty. The noodles were cooked well and they were chewy. The toppings included cucumber and tomato style sauce, as well as pork and beef. You had a lot of different flavors going on in this dish. All very balanced and delicious. I was looking for a new Chinese lunch place, and after seeing LaoXi with a Michelin Bib, I figured that I would give it a try. LaoXi sits in an unassuming strip mall in suburban Arcadia. The place is small, and very clean. All the tables surrounding me are speaking Chinese and lapping up various noodles. The staff is very friendly and I ordered the Wife's Special Noodle, handmade noodles covered in three separate sauces. I was encouraged to fully mix the dish before eating. The noodles are excellent, with a great texture and deep flavor. They really reminded me of fresh pasta you might get at the best Italian restaurants. Once the sauces were mixed, between the tomato and braised pork, it was a Chinese version of a ragu. On my way out, it was recommended that I try another dish next time. [ Background ] August 2024 on a Sunday at 12:00 PM I actually stopped by LaoXi Noodle House with a few friends three years ago before I became serious about the San Gabriel Valley food scene and Yelp. This time, I intentionally decided to revisit the location on Live Oak Avenue since it's the one with a Bib Gourmand designation in the Michelin Guide, classifying it as having "good quality, good value cooking" ( https://guide.michelin.com/us/en/california/arcadia/restaurant/laoxi-noodle-house ). There's a second location also in Arcadia but on South Baldwin Avenue. Both spots are mentioned in "The 22 Essential San Gabriel Valley Restaurants" article from Eater ( https://la.eater.com/maps/best-san-gabriel-valley-restaurants-chinese-asian ). Located in the corner of a tiny strip mall, LaoXi Noodle House has an unassuming exterior. After walking in, I noticed the interior looked basically the same as three years ago. The wall near the front door showcases multiple framed newspaper articles detailing the restaurant's accolades. The decor is simple and modest with six tables that can seat up to four people each and a larger round table stashed in a corner that can seat up to six. When I arrived, there was one party waiting for their take-out order and another party already seated. It seems I got lucky and beat the lunch rush since the entire restaurant was full within 30 minutes. [ Food ] The compact, double-sided menu displays six categories (cold dish, noodles, main course, house special, dumplings, and frozen dumplings), totaling in just 20 dishes. If I recall correctly, I ordered the 14. Lao Xi'er Special Beef Noodle Soup last time. Therefore, I wanted to try something new. After learning about the owners' backstory and how a specific dish led to their marriage ( https://la.eater.com/2015/11/30/9821048/laoxi-noodle-house-handmade-shanxi-feature-arcadia ), I knew I had to try it. So I ordered: * 11. "Hun Yuan" Cold Jelly ($7.99) This cold dish included julienned cucumbers juxtaposed with thick slabs of jelly noodles made from potato flour. The noodles were dusted with crushed peanuts (?). Everything was placed on top of a generous portion of sesame sauce that was mixed with a bright red chili oil drizzle. My eating experience was a little messy since the noodles were slightly stuck together; when I tried separating them, I kept splattering liquid everywhere. I enjoyed the fun, bouncy texture of the jelly noodles. I could definitely taste the nuttiness from the sesame sauce, and the added spiciness gave me a sneezing fit while eating. However, I wasn't the biggest fan of the flavor of the sauce or the noodles. Personally, I wouldn't order this again, but if these ingredients sound good to you, and you're feeling adventurous, give it a try. * 13. Wife's Special Noodle with Fried Pork (Helao Style) ($16.00) The famous dish came with a bed of smooth, round noodles. It included three toppings: ground pork, tomato and eggs, and pork belly. Judging from older pictures, this dish originally came with bok choy; however, it was swapped with thinly sliced cucumbers instead. Be sure to mix everything together before digging in. I enjoyed the savoriness from the pork bits. The tomato and egg component was a bit nostalgic since it's obviously very similar to the classic Chinese stir-fried tomato and scrambled eggs dish, which I grew up eating. And I did like the noodle's chewy texture. But in my opinion, I would rather order the Lao Xi'er Special Beef Noodle Soup. [ Service ] After walking in, I was greeted by the waitress, who gestured for me to choose my own seat. She quickly brought over a menu and also graciously lowered all the sheer blinds to block out the sunlight. The waitress came back a few minutes later. After I ordered, she mentioned that I could get my own water from the water dispenser next to the register at the front counter. There's also a fridge filled with cold drinks available for purchase. And on top of each table, there's a self-service tray with chopsticks, spoons, and condiments like soy sauce, chili oil, and seasonings. So this restaurant is pretty hands-off, and I only interacted with the employee a few times. I did have to flag her down once I was ready to pay, and she promptly brought over the receipt. [ Tips ] There are a decent amount of parking spots since the lot is shared by a couple of businesses. If you're also eating by yourself, I would suggest ordering just one noodle dish since they are pretty filling. The suggested tip on the receipt is calculated post-tax. read more

Yummy lil noodle shop! If you are into handmade noodles, this is your place. I came with friends on a Monday evening and we tried: The Special beef noodle soup - we thought this was going to be a braised beef noodle soup (brown soup) but it was white! The noodles were also cooked quite well, but maybe a tad soft in my opinion. The soup was very flavorful and well seasoned. Mao Er Duo in Lamb Soup - I love lamb soup! I think it's so warm and the meatiness and depth of flavor from lamb is like a hug ... for my stomach. I thought the noodles were perfectly cooked, but the soup was a TAD overly peppery - but still good. There's also chunks of lamb which I super enjoyed! Stir fried Mao Er Duo - I think this might have been my favorite because when the noodles are stir fried, they retain an extra QQ texture that's super fun to eat. When in soup, it feels a bit softer probably because it's sitting in hot soup. The stir fried mao er duo is super flavorful and reminds me of char koay tiew in Fukkien/Malaysian restaurants. I would advise against over ordering - especially the noodle dishes - to avoid taking them home afterward. The mao er duo in lamb soup turns very soft once cooked and soft noodles are not as fun to eat. The soup is great when reheated though! Free parking in the parking lot and there's also lots of free street parking nearby. I don't think they have restrooms. A very solid institution that I would come back to. My friend and I got the house special wife's noodles, and the beef noodle soup. Wife's noodles was very unique flavor, especially because of the tomato and egg, which I've never had in a noodle dish before, overall, very hearty, generous portions, and solid in flavor. The beef noodle soup I thought was the better of the two dishes, the beef was exceptionally tender. The flavor the broth was very good as well, with the strong flavor of star anise coming through, my only complaint my complaint with most noodle shops in SGV is that the broth is not meaty enough. With that being said, despite that, this was a very solid dish, and probably one of the better beef noodle soup that I've had in the SGV. The pork and Napa Dumplings were fine, but they did have a clean flavor and without MSG, which I did appreciate. read more

I'm not sure how long LaoXi Noodle House has been around, but I was disappointed to learn that it was within a 10 minute walk from my childhood home! Imagine living that close and never even visiting... Glad I eventually discovered it on Yelp because it's so easy to miss on a street corner. I ordered the #6 Noodles (Mao Er'duo Style) and it was hard to communicate. Although I said it fine in Chinese, I think there was a misunderstanding in dialect, but eventually there was understanding. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I enjoyed the white pepper seasoning on a meaty broth. The broth itself was quite salty, but the pasta were nice and had substantial texture. The meat in the bowl was quite tender and a pleasure to eat, and the vermicelli and cilantro were subtle garnishes that elevated the entree. I found pieces of potato inside which felt random and may be easily mistaken for the pasta, but the texture of soft potatoes complemented the chewy pasta well. I must be in a noodle phase of my life because this this the third noodles house I've been to in the past 2 weeks. And I have to say it's my least favorite of late. The noodles (Wife special and Lao xi special) were good but thing was spectacular and nothing stood out, and if I must be a little harsh, it's was rather forgettable. If you're in the area I'd say sure check it out, but it's definite not worth the drive to Arcadia. You definitely have better options in the area. LaoXi Noodle House was becoming another one of those places where I pass by rather often as I go home or head out on Live Oak. On my recent bike ride, I noticed that the end of the bike trail from the Peck Road Park takes me practically right next door to here, so on my next Sunday bike ride, we dropped by for lunch at 2:30 pm, luckily right before their break from 3 - 5 pm. Sorta wish this plaza had a bike rack as it took some time finding a place to chain and secure our bikes. Not the fault of the business though. Once settled in, we took some time reviewing the menu and ordered four delicious items! * Green onion pancake ($6.99). I'm a total sucker for green onion pancake and I love the one made by LaoXi! It's so crisp and flavorful without being too fried. Honestly might be the best one I've tasted at any place. Well worth the $6.99 cost. Comes in 6 pieces. * Pork and napa dumplings ($9.35). One order comes with 12 pieces. Pretty good! * Wife's special noodle with fried pork (he lao style) ($13.50). I can see why it's a popular noodle item to order. Mix it before you dig in or grab a little bit of the pork, raw julianned cucumbers, noodles, egg, and two types of sauces into each bite. Love the texture of the noodles! * Meat ball with salt and pepper ($15.99). BF really wanted to order this and it was an unexpected favorite of the meal! The meat balls are crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. The dish comes with finely chopped garlic and cilantro. Make sure you put a bit of garlic and cilantro with each meat ball to bring out the flavor of the meat ball! Despite COVID times, I appreciate that they still use actual dishware and silverware for use. I've been to other places where the business has converted to disposable plastic for a lot of things, which does make it harder to eat with and bad for the environment. Not here! The only thing with disposable is that you get water at the self-serve container by the register and they offer Styrofoam cups for the water. Next time, I'll have to bring my own non-disposable cup. They take credit cards and I didn't notice any required minimum. Parking is available in the plaza and it didn't seem too challenging to find a spot, though street parking off Hempstead may be an option if the lot is full. Good service and good food here! Holy COW LaoXi Noodle House needs more love!!! I came here with a friend who raved about the place, and now having experienced it for myself, I am all aboard the lovin' LaoXi train as well. The restaurant itself is fairly small and plain, but I literally couldn't care less, as I only remember the two amazing dishes we had there. We got the Wife's Special noodles as well as the lamb cat ear noodle soup. Both were served in veritable TUREENS that honestly felt almost self-replenishing with how much food was in each one. First off, the noodles themselves were amazing. The Wife special noodles were springy and chewy, and almost reminded me of a thick rice noodle, but stronger. The cat ear noodles were incredible as well, and the little divot in each one was a perfect vessel for the incredible soup. Now lets talk details. The Wife noodles came with two types of meats as well as a saucy portion of tomato egg stir fry and thin sliced cucumbers. Though it sounds a bit strange on paper, they combined to create an umami BOMB absolutely bursting with flavor. The sauce clung onto the noodles really well and the cucumber provided some much-needed freshness and crunch. Both homey and exciting, with a drizzle of their chili oil (spicier than it looks!) you are in for an incredible experience. The lamb soup that the cat ear noodles were housed in was stewed to perfection. The lamb was not gamey at all but still retained that unique lamb taste. Each piece was spoon tender and the soup was cloudy and rich. Cilantro and green onion gave the soup a nice zest and speaking truthfully, I'm drooling a bit just thinking about it as I write this review. A drizzle of chili oil and off you go to noodle heaven. We got these two massive bowls of goodness for under $30, and my friend and I were both stuffed with a good portion of leftovers to boot. Sometimes I say that I wouldn't go out of my way to go to a certain restaurant, but this is NOT one of those instances. The noodles from the Shanxi province are famous, and I was very excited when I found out that there is a Michelin restaurant service traditional hand-made Shanxi noodles! My friend and I hiked 8.2 miles in the morning to make sure we have big appetite, as we want to try as many noodle dishes as we could possibly eat. We were not disappointed! We had the Wife Noodles, the Knife Cut noodles and the Cat Ear noodles. They were all different and extremely delicious - the texture of the noodles were 100% on point! We also enjoyed the homey feel of this little noodle house - the proprietor is such a sweet lady! I will definitely be back, once I recover from my deep food coma. This has been on my list go try for a while, finally decided to try. I'll get the negatives out of the way. Parking is limited due to the amount of places in the one shopping center. Menu is limited as well. But prices are great for the amount of food. I got the could sesame noodles which was delicious! My boyfriend got the cars ears noodle dish, which was also so well seasoned and flavorful. The appetizer comes with 3 options so we got the spicy cucumber, braised beef and shredded potatoes, never had any of these seasoned the way they were and it was a delight to eat. LaoXi Noodle never disappoints on rainy day and has become one of my go-tos in the area. We ordered the Wife Special Noodle and the Noodle Lamb Soup. The Wife Special Noodle was a dry noodle mixed with tomatoes and egg, beef, cucumber, and a ground pork sauce. It was sort of a mix between a lighter jjajiang mian with Taiwanese tomatoes and egg. The flavors blended together surprisingly well. The Noodle in Lamb Soup is one of their signatures. They have their "cat's ear" noodles in a thicker peppery broth with mushrooms. If you like lamb I would definitely recommend getting this one. read more

So many times I've driven by this place (usually go to Fusion cafe across the street - which ironically isn't fusion anything and more traditional Chinese imho, but I digress....).... But did a Yelp check and this place popped up for what seems to be a nice quick meal for some soup and noodles. Off the bat, looks like another Shanghai type noodle shop ... dumplings, noodles, soup... yup. But the flavor was unique. Especially one of their signature dishes the Beef Broth soup (forgot the actual menu name). The noodles were silky and the broth was just wholesome and had a feeling of home cooked flavor. Like subtle flavors that weren't overpowering of just salt or msg, but something slightly more complex and appetizing. The beef chunks were super tender and nicely seasoned. This was definitely a 5 star dish. We also tried the spicy cold noodle and they was very good too. The sauce was ample (some other places get skimpy on it... don't know why) and enough to coat every hand cut (so it seems) jelly noodle. It was cool and refreshing. I'd give it a solid 4.2 ;) Cause of the freezer of frozen dumplings, we figure they'd be good with that. We got some and it was just meh. It was good flavor (but not like totally out of this world) but the skin was quite thick and almost cakey. 3 stars at best. Especially the price you pay. That's the other thing, for a small hole in the wall shop, pricing was like DTF pricing. The beef noodle soup was worth it but for everything else, nah. I'd come here again just for the one menu item, and maybe I'll try something else. But dang, they're really taking advantage of this inflation thing and marking it up a bit. But at least the portions didn't shrink (afaik). read more

On the Michelin recommended guide. I love their wife house and cold appetizer. Service is good but they don't accept Apple Pay just a heads up. Love the wife special noodles perfect combo of noodles and meat. Can't wait to come back and try their other special. They have two location in arcadia. This mom and pop dumpling & noodle restaurant is located in a tiny strip mall off of Live Oak and 6th ave. It's a gem to find a delicious authentic dumpling restaurant here in South Arcadia. They have limited hours and close for a few hours in between lunch and dinner. Staff here are extremely friendly and welcoming. Speedy service. Food came out really quick. You can dine in, take-out or purchase frozen dumplings directly from them to cook at home. Their dumplings are all handmade in house. We tried the lamb dumpling and the pork & chive dumplings. Both were good. The skin is easy to break though cause it's on the thin side. The flavor of the filling is on par. The lamb dumpling was not too gamey at all. Add a bit of spicy sauce or soy-vinegar.... It complements well. The pork & chive chive dumpling was very fragrant thanks to the chive. Every bite was very aromatic in a good way. Their cold dishes (pig ear, cucumber, shredded potatoes) were A++. Super refreshing on a hot day. Their beef noodle soup is the clear broth style, not the red,spicy soup style. I'm not sure if they sell the red, spicy version or not. Anyway, for the clear broth beef noodle soup, the base soup had more of a lamb taste to it than beef. It kind of threw me off at first, but it's still good in its own way. My brother got the wife's special noodle, which is a combo of tomato sauce, bean paste, Jia Jia sauce. A very interesting trio combo that when mixed together, creates an amazing flavor - sweet and savory. Would get this again. My brother ate it completely clean & he's a picky eater. Introduction: I've been hankering for some cat ear noodles ever since I saw how it's made on a food documentary. Upon reflection I remember Lao Xi Noodle House is a restaurant that makes these unique shaped noodles. I bought a bowl of their cat ear noodles in lamb soup to-go since they were about to close. Food: Cat Ears Noodles in Lamb Soup: Cat ears noodles, said to have originated in Shanxi province in the 18th century, is a Northern noodle dish that's relatively unknown in the States. The noodles get their name due to its shape resembling that of cat ears: think Italian gnocchetti sardi pasta but cooked in a Chinese lamb stew. In China the cat ears noodles are often cooked in clay pot/bowls since it's said the clayware absorbs the flavors and retains the heat better. Within the lamb soup there are wood ear fungus, cubes of potato, vermicelli, mushrooms, chunks of lamb, and of course, the cat ear noodles. The broth is clean, light, and flavorful. The cat ear noodles are both al-dente in texture but also lightly chewy. The chunks of lamb are succulent and tender, indicating that it's been cooked for a long time. What I like most about the lamb is the fact the cook manages to get rid of the lamb's inherent pungent gaminess through the usage of spices and herbs; what remains is the lamb's savoriness and fragrance. It's a culinary feat that's not easy to pull off considering many restaurants often fail at it. The cat ears noodles, when eaten with the potatoes, vermicelli, wood ear fungus, mushrooms, and lamb [don't forget the soup], it yields a wholesome and comforting feeling throughout the body. Taste is good, portion is small, not much protein in the sauce, basically just noodles itself. Not a good cost-reward ratio

LUNCH I was able to drive over from school on Tuesday for a lunch in the area. They had their own lot and there was plenty of parking. My friends and I ordered 13. Wife's Special Noodle with Fried Pork (He Lao Style), 14. Lao Xl'er Special Beef Noodle Soup, and 17. Lamb Dumplings. Everything was extremely tasty. 13 had pork, cucumber, and Chinese tomato egg. Its flavor reminded me of black bean noodle (jajang myun/mein) but definitely had a unique and tasty flavor. 14 was an amazing and clean broth. Was perfect for sinus clearing. Absolutely delicious and arguably their best dish that day. Their 17 was super tasty and was actually filled with soup inside like XLB. Would recommend some dumplings. Ambiance was chatty with lots of noodle slurping, so I fit right in. Small seating and cozy feel. Definitely a great lunch spot and would recommend! read more
