Combination Phở (steak, brisket, meatballs, tripe, and tendon)
Eric H.

Phở, for me, is enjoyable not only in cold weather but even during the heat. I could indulge in phở year long and would not be in a food rut. The menu here is straightforward--offering the typical egg roll/spring roll appetizers, hot noodle soups, brothless noodle bowls, fried rice, stir-fry dishes, Vietnamese coffee and Thai tea. I ordered the Combination Phở, which came with steak, brisket, meatballs, tripe and tendon along with white onion, green onion and cilantro as garnish. The noodle soups are abundant. The bowl is loaded with tons of meat on top and plenty of rice noodles on the bottom. The soup was fragrant and flavorful. The broth was piping hot that it cooked my thinly sliced raw beef before it reached my table. I just wished they included more white onions because towards the end of my bowl I ran out! The restaurant is small with nine tables and not ideal for larger groups. When we arrived for lunch there was one other customer, but then tables started progressively filling up. There was a mix-up with one of our orders which caused a significant delay. The food is good, but they heavily use MSG in their broth. I was extremely thirsty after eating my meal. I would come back to dine-in but find it odd they charge a packaging fee for take-out orders.

Grandma and I came here for opening weekend and it did not disappoint! It was very busy, and we waited almost an hour to get a table, but it was totally worth it. I really love the broth flavor on the pho. The staff went out of their way to be friendly and attentive, despite how busy it was for the promotion they were offering for the weekend. The inside is actually really small and there aren't a lot of tables, so be prepared to wait!

For my first visit, I ordered the Amy pho special- tasty, steaming hot broth with chicken, beef, shrimp, and a short rib- totally delicious and very satisfying. I ordered the grilled pork vermicelli bowl on my second visit and it was a good thing I was hungry; the tender rice noodles were very generously topped with slices of well seasoned grilled pork, crunchy egg rolls, veggies, bean sprouts, and crushed peanuts. It was more food than I expected, and I finished it all. Great food, fast service, and good prices for the quality and quantity of food.

Oh my gosh, I wish we lived closer to this place because it is such a gem! What an incredible pho spot from the service to the menu to the flavors. We were seriously impressed. They offer so many great options, and the servers were extremely helpful, kind, and attentive. They made thoughtful recommendations, checked on us often, and truly made sure our first visit was memorable. The pho had a special, comforting flavor that tasted like it was made in someone's home kitchen. It was easily one of the best bowls of pho I have had in the Valley. We were so glad we found them and excited they are newly opened. We'll absolutely be back!

So I saw this post on Facebook about a new pho place on Union Hills, and of course I had to check it out. It's in a little strip mall, but really easy to spot because the big "AMY PHO" sign is right above the entrance. The restaurant itself is pretty small, but it's bright and clean inside. Two guys were working as servers that day, and they were really nice. Since it's called Amy Pho, I thought we'd actually see Amy there, but it turns out the owner named it after his wife. I thought that was really sweet and romantic. The menu is short and simple, which I actually prefer, it makes ordering easy. We got shrimp spring rolls, pork crispy egg rolls, and two bowls of combination pho. The spring rolls were fresh, the egg rolls were nice and crispy, and the pho was really flavorful. The portions were just right, and the broth had a lot of taste without being too salty. The best part was we didn't feel super thirsty afterward, which to me means the broth is made well and not overloaded with sodium. All in all, I really liked this spot. The food was good, the service was friendly, and the story behind the name makes it even more special. Definitely a place I'd go back to.

Amy Pho Arrived Friday evening around 6:45 pm and no one is in the restaurant, that feeling setting in like whoa is something wrong about this place, at about 7:00 pm started to fill up so anxiety subsided. I had the #4 Amy Pho with Steak, Shimp and Chicken which came in a good size generous bowl, good broth about 4 shrimp, decent amount of steak and chicken. Pretty good price of $14.99 for what you get. Also got the Pork Crispy Egg Rolls came with 3 Egg Rolls and dipping sauce, they do a good job with these. Small business owned restaurant, doing a great job serving up authentic tasty Vietnamese food. Not a fancy place, just go for the food Even better, today was the last day of 20% off entire dine in bill

Pho Dac Biet

Came by on a Sunday around 11am. Only one other patron in this cozy establishment so there were plenty of seats to choose from. Simple menu that didn't take long to look over. Decided on the Pho Dac Biet and some take out orders. Pho came out pretty quickly and was well filled with plenty of meat/protein and noodles. Broth was pretty good. Nice and clean with decent flavor. Noodles were as expected. Not bad if you're looking to grab a quick meal. Service was excellent.

Pork 2A. PORK & VEGETABLES EGG ROLLS - CH GI MN

Hate to do this because I was so excited to try it based on the high reviews. But, they need improvements. I know they just opened so I have high hopes it'll get better. Everytime husband and I try a new Viet spot, we always order their egg rolls, spring rolls, pho, and vermicelli noodles. It's hard to find a spot that hits a home run that it's all good. Grilled pork and shrimp spring roll: 4 out of 5 stars. They were large and plump. Not full of fillers. I enjoy the dipping sauce more when it's more peanut based than hoisin. Very good. Only wish they had fresh peanuts in the sauce. Pork egg rolls: 1 out of 5. These were bad. If you wanted lettuce and mint there is an up charge. The filling was mush. I questioned if the pork was cooked through. The dipping sauce nuoc cham had no flavor. I even added the sambal chili sauce. Nothing. Grilled pork vermicelli: hubby gave it a 3 out of 5. The meat was thin and dry. I didn't try the rest of it but it looked good. Beef pho: 3 out of 5. It wasn't the worst I've had but not the best either. I took a sip of the broth first thing and it tasted good. But mild in flavor. Almost seemed watered down. They did give a lot of beef for $10 I will say. They are heavy handed on the noodles. Service was sad. Only had one guy working in the front and I felt bad for him. He was super nice and apologetic to everyone. It took us about an hour and half to have dinner. They started running out of things and were not prepared for a Friday night dinner. He mentioned that it was just him and one cook. He was cooking and working the front. I felt so bad for the woman that came in and ordered her food when we got our food. And was still waiting when we left. Not sure what she ordered. The table next to us ordered the veg pho but with chicken broth. There was an aroma that wasn't pleasant. I kept smelling my food thinking it was mine. Overall. It's a small place. But I hope they get better. I'll try them again another time.

Pretty decent new Vietnamese spot. I had their lemongrass and chili oil wings. The meat was really tender and the lemongrass fragrant. It didn't taste much of the chili oil though. The pho broth was quite good. It had the right depth and flavor you'd hope for in a good bowl. The meat quality was so-so. There was only one server working but he was friendly. The music was interesting as it kept switching from Vietnamese music to American music lol. The kids loved the egg rolls and the spring rolls were good.

Pho Thai

Updated review because i ordered pho to go...packaging is pleasing but the noodles werent all the way cooked and some were dried out. The steak was in the broth instead of separate which makes the steak dry and chewy. They also forgot jalapeños in my soup additives. Im not sure if I'll order to go from here again, I'll just have to go in if im craving their pho so they can fix their mistakes while I am there.

Decent broth and proportions. Service was reasonably quick. I would go again. Similar to what I'm used to from Southern California.

The ambience is super comfortable, easy, casual. But, it's *super* loud, like really, really loud. The 4 of us had to literally scream, top of our lungs, to hear each other, and these aren't big tables, it's tight in there, so you're very close together. We left with sore throats from yelling. It felt like "a relief" when we stepped out front. After 2 hours sitting in the wooden seats, my butt was also relieved to be getting up. Parking is ridiculous, it's a very thin one way driveway with *no way to turn around* when you reach the end - back it up! Super tiny parking lot. Food: the food was very good. We ordered 6-8 things for the 4 of us because all items are pretty small. Top section of the menu are called smaller items. They were. Items on the bottom section are bigger, but not big. For perspective, when the 4 of us split an item from the bottom "entree section" we each got 2-3 bites/forks-full. So a full entree for one person is 8-12 bites. All items tasted very good, clearly high quality, well curated and definitely unique to this restaurant. The steamed white rice was hot, steamy, moist and sticky, really good. The Panang Chicken was really good, different, creamy, dark, rich and smokey. I added pictures of the menu, inside, patio, bar and a few food items so you can see for yourself. Would I go back? I would because the service was great, visual atmosphere was comfortable, and food was high quality, but turning the music volume down at least 1/2 way from what we had would go a long way,... a looooong way, seriously. Increasing the portion size of menu entrees would also be an improvement since they're about the same price as larger portions elsewhere. And throw some cushions on those inside wooden benches, our butts will thank you. Overall this was a good first visit and I'd try Glai Baan again, hoping for the same great service, quality food and updates to the other items.

So when I say…read morethis visit had some highs and lows, understand that I am coming from a place of love, not grievance. Their ramen alone is worth the trip. This was one meal, not a verdict. We planted ourselves on the patio, which has genuinely great atmosphere. Phoenix in April means you are playing thermal roulette with your will to live, and some misters would not go unappreciated. Service was fantastic: we had what felt like a whole school of staff looking after us, and every single one of them knew the menu, had great recommendations, and seemed personally invested in getting hot food to our table at a speed that bordered on supernatural. Now the drinks: The Overnight is what sophisticated apple juice dreams about when it finally goes to therapy and starts making better choices. Delicate, elegant, with a soft foam that has absolutely no business being that pretty. It arrives with a tiny scoop of green tea ice cream that is subtle and perfect as a chaser. Drink of the night, no contest. The Caipirinha is a genuine unicorn on Phoenix menus because of the specialty spirit, cachaça, in it and it was beautifully done. It is a touch sweet for my lime-forward preferences, but my husband absolutely loved it. The Pornstar Martini is everything the name promises and nothing you would hesitate to recommend to your most judgmental aunt. The passionfruit actually comes through, which sounds like the bare minimum but is apparently a radical act in cocktail culture because of the delicate flavor. Pure summer in a glass and I would order it again without blinking. On to the food, where things get a little more complicated: The Chorizo Wonton special had real potential and great chorizo that was clearly trying its heart out. Unfortunately the wonton wrapper arrived and decided to throw a wet blanket over the entire proceedings. The chorizo had somewhere to go and the wrapper simply would not let it go there. However, the pickled onions served alongside are a 10/10. The 3 for $18 steamed buns were the main event of the evening. The buns themselves are soft, pillowy, and structurally perfect, which makes what I am about to say about some of the fillings all the more tragic: The pork belly bun is just... fine, perhaps the most devastating thing you can say about pork belly, which has no business being merely fine. It runs a little dry, a little too thick, and needs significantly more hoisin to reach anything close to its potential. The sauce exists but it is doing the bare minimum. 6/10 The hot chicken bun redeems the situation considerably. Thigh meat instead of breast and is genuinely flavorful and while the hot sauce is more generic than exciting, it gets the job done without embarrassing itself. A respectable recovery. 8/10. The BBQ plum meatball bun is currently the Bun of the Moment and I need everyone involved in this restaurant's decision making to sit down because I have some things to say. That plum sauce is sweet and slightly smoky and the meatballs are perfectly tender with a ginger note that shows up with confidence. We loved this bun so much that we physically interrupted the table next to us mid-conversation to recommend it. I heard the chef is considering adding it to the permanent menu, and I would like to formally submit my vote, my husband's vote, and the votes of our neighboring diners who received our unsolicited opinion whether they wanted it or not. Add it to the menu. I will not be taking questions. 10/10, perfect, do not touch it. The Char Sui Pork Banh Mi is where I must tread carefully, partly out of fairness and partly because I know in my heart that some of this is personal taste rather than kitchen failure. The flavors ran very sweet with no acidity showing up to mediate, and the whole thing just was not for me. The Thai salad side, however, is a more objective situation. The bang bang dressing was applied with such aggressive restraint that I began to wonder if the kitchen was rationing it for an emergency. What remained was a bowl of cabbage doing a joyless impression of a salad that had given up on itself. Here is where I land: Clever Koi is a genuinely great restaurant having a complicated relationship with a couple of its dishes, which happens to the best of us. The cocktail program is vast and outstanding, the staff is warm and efficient and somehow makes you feel like the most important table in the room, the ramen is the stuff of legend, and the meatball bun is currently the most consequential thing happening in Phoenix. I will be back. I will be ordering the meatball bun in quantities that will concern the kitchen. Five stars, because I have a vested interest in that meatball bun sticking around and I am not above a little strategic encouragement on Yelp.

Either way, The food we received was the bomb.com! We were hanging out and watching movies on a Saturday while my lady was nursing a bit of a cold. She wanted something in the chicken noodle soup family, and after a bit of back-and-forth, we decided to look for Ramen or pho. Now that's where the start started, but that's clearly not where it ended. After a couple of different searches, we found kung fu noodle And simply picked it based on a combination of the pictures, the reviews and the fact that they have several noodle soup options that looked really appealing. Ultimately, we ended up ordering the spicy beef noodle soup, and the house special noodle soup along with their dumplings, crab Rangoon's and fried rice. Now, usually I skip straight to the review of the food at this point, but I have to give them one additional compliment. This place goes the extra mile in terms of making sure the delivery experience is Extra level. Starting with their packaging, which, for someone who is infatuated with great design, they really do a great job of driving home the full brand experience! Not only were the package is aesthetically, pleasing and artistic in some cases, but they were also very functional as well with all of the plastic containers having sealed lids that had to be broken open for the first time by us. This was just extra assurance that our food wasn't tampered with on the ride from the restaurant to the house. In addition, the food was extremely fresh and hot, even the crab Rangoon's, which in some cases can be delivered with that wet, gummy effect because of the steam and condensation that accumulates inside of many of the take-home containers that you receive from most Asian food places. I wouldn't argue that this is the kind of containers that you would necessarily keep around as home Tupperware, but the bag that they sent everything in definitely feels like it's gotta reuse or two in it. Overall, we were really happy with the quality of the food as both Soups were portion wise enough for two consecutive days of meals. Same thing with the fried rice, which was really good We got the shrimp version and it had plenty of shrimp and veggies in addition to really fresh rice. Lastly, while I'm not specifically a dumpling guy, I decided to try these because the pictures looked really good on the website. And I can't lie, these were definitely really Good dumplings. I love Japanese food so my decision was made. I drove over and parked in their complimentary lot. Ambiance (3.5/5): I've been to Japan and there are plenty of izakayas there. Think of them as small bars which often serve solid food. Zu fits that bit. It's a relatively small restaurant, probably seats about 30 people. and it's pretty no frills for a Japanese spot. I was seated at a booth in the corner of the restaurant. They have free WiFi which is always a good touch. Service (3/5): Service was friendly, though a bit inconsistent. My waitress wasn't as attentive as I would have liked. The type of service where you have to flag them down to get what you want and to close out. Drinks (4/5): Zu has a nice menu of Japanese and Korean beverages, including sake, soju, Japanese beer, and more. With that being said, I just had an iced green tea. Food (4/5): I got a nice variety. I went with the Japanese sausage off of the grill menu, the OBI mayo roll off of the sushi menu, and the cheese corn off of the appetizer menu. Let's start with the sausage. It's a small item, two small sausages, but absolutely delicious. The sausage was bursting with flavor and basted in a sweet sauce. Minus the portion size, perfection. The cheese corn also hit the spot, but the execution was off. The corn is served on a hot platter, and unfortunately some of the corn on the edges was badly burnt. The type of situation where they should start over. Which they didn't. Lastly, the OBI mayo roll is essentially a California roll with marinated warm shrimp on top in a mayo sauce. I didn't love the hot and cold combo (shrimp and sushi), but outside of the temperature, it was a delicious roll. All in all, a very food meal. My only gripe with Japanese food is that it can get expensive quick. Given that Zu is in Tempe, I was hoping that prices would be a little cheaper. With that being said, they do have a solid happy hour (and reverse happy hour) with both food and drink specials. Next time I stop by, I'd like to check out some of their Korean options. I focused on the Japanese stuff this time (which makes the majority of the menu). Next time around, the bulgogi is calling my name!
