Albacore
Jenna H.

My family likes this place a lot. I was not a fan... make sure the menu is completely clean if you're with a group because there was one marked off and both parties thought the other ordered it so we got an extra roll... I got the climax. The mayo tasted weird... like maybe it was miracle whip? I couldn't eat the whole the thing. The bonus roll we thought the other party ordered was monkey brains. Didn't like it at all but that's because I hate mushrooms so take that as you will. The albacore sashimi was good. I ended up dipping in a side of ponzu. Family ordered veggie roll with soy paper and shrimp tempura which they both liked.

Lobster baked roll

We came in on our day off excited to try a new sushi spot and were seated right away. We started with two Arnold Palmers and edamame. Unfortunately, the Arnold Palmers tasted like watered-down lemonade with no tea, and about half of the edamame wasn't salted. When we wanted to ask for replacement drinks, order sushi, and get salt, we waited around 15 minutes without anyone checking on us--even though there was only one other guest dining and multiple employees working. My boyfriend eventually had to get up and find a server just to place our order and request what we needed. After another 15+ minutes, our sushi rolls came out, but my replacement drink still hadn't arrived. We also weren't given soy sauce at any point and had to get up and grab it ourselves. When the rolls were dropped off, they were set down abruptly, and the interaction felt cold and unwelcoming. The overall energy made us feel like we weren't wanted there. Other odd things included receiving ginger, eel sauce, and spicy mayo in to-go containers even though we were dining in. We weren't checked on until we were nearly done with our first two rolls, and even then, the interaction felt rushed and indirect. When I asked for a manager, I was told none was present, and they wouldn't provide a way to contact one. We also had to track someone down just to get our check. The food itself was good--we really enjoyed the Firecracker and First Love rolls, though the baked lobster roll wasn't our favorite. Unfortunately, as servers ourselves, the service and attitude really missed the mark, and we likely won't be returning.

Order the Climax roll!

I've gone here a lot over the years and have noticed the last 2 times that the food portions are smaller, food quality has gone down and it's considerably more expensive. I think they charge around $3-4 dollars more per item and the value just isn't there compared to similarity costed food. I've tried so many of their rolls but usually order the Climax and garlic edamame. This time the roll was smaller, had less of everything on it, notably the sauces on top, and the salmon was mushy and did not taste fresh. The garlic edamame was great though. I'm at a point that if I'm paying this much and the quality is now like this, I'd rather make the trek to Sushi Brokers. I'm attaching a picture with the magnificent Climax roll of yesteryear compared to the anti climatic roll from this last Wednesday,

Aloha Hawaiians, I had a craving for sushi, I visited a familiar haunt of mines. This was the first Japanese restaurant I discovered in Az. Today fried calamari to start. Then, I moved on to the 2 roll special for lunch great prices. I also had the yellowfin sashimi. I'm glad they are still there a good spot to drop in for a quick lunch. In and out.

Veggie Roll Spider Roll

My husband and I stopped by tonight and were seated quickly. This was our first time and although the waiter didn't ask, we didn't tell them either. The menu had a vast amount of sushi offerings but a minimum amount of entrees. This is the first sushi spot where my husband struggled with finding something to eat. We ordered a good amount of food: Gyoza & crab puffs were okay, appetizer came out after sushi Miso soup was watery to the point of no taste Veggie roll was overwhelmed by cucumber Cucumber roll had large chunks of cucumber which my husband remarked Spider roll, was smaller than expected and not a lot of variety inside, again heavy on the cucumber Lobster roll, although the topping was well made it just didn't vibe Bento box, the one thing my husband found was not well made. The teriyaki sauce was barely there and the salad was drowned in dressing. He did say the rice was good. Overall it was better than store bought but we definitely have had better for cheaper prices. The menu said happy hour until close and that sushi was not half off. Definitely not worth the tab.

Every time we have family in town, I like to bring them here. This neighborhood family restaurant is great. Service is always great, we have always been a well taken care of. We ordered several sushi rolls, our always favorite go to sushi of course are the spicy salmon and spicy tuna. Rainbow roll and dragon roll were always great. Kiss my tuna roll was also another delicious option. Always recommend this place

Came for happy hour after 2pm on Saturday. Sushi was well done and good value but serious gap in service, speed and help, but still good

Lunch Bento Box

Sushi style has really good, fresh sushi! The lunch bento box is amazing, and there are so many different options to choose from and mix and match. I loved the tootsie roll. Everything tastes fresh and the inside of the restaurant is nice and clean. The service wasn't great, the server barely looked at me. I shouldn't have to ask for a refill of water 3 times. I was tempted to grab the water pitcher on the other table and just do it myself. The food was great, the service just needs improvement, but I will be back to try again!

Absolutely loved this restaurant in Moon Valley. Came in during happy hour and ordered crispy tuna app, spicy garlic edamame and a couple rolls and we were so impressed by speed of service during a pretty busy Tuesday evening. Everything came out perfect. The rolls were a great size and everything tasted great. Family friendly restaurant, there's indoor and outdoor seating as well as happy hour specials. Definitely give this place a try, we can't wait to come back!

We were there at around 5pm and it wasn't too busy, but there was a steady flow of diners coming in and out. Seating is ample, with outdoor, bar, sushi bar, and regular table options. I ordered two rolls: hot havana and mango roll. Both were delicious and the mango was juicy! The purple rice was super fun and set them apart from other sushi spots. I also ordered the miso soup to start. The food came out quickly. My only "complaint" is there aren't a ton of classic roll options. But this is a more upscale sushi restaurant, so it isn't surprising. I will keep this place in my list of spots to hit when I'm looking for a bite to eat in DTPHX.

But I know tables around us were starting to be fed up as well. Despite this, our waiter did cover 1 of the desserts which was nice. And overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the decor and the food. My favorite was honestly the wagyu nigiri and uni nigiri, but everything was delicious. I loved the scallops temaki, loved the mango roll (something different) and the toro sashimi. The burnt cheesecake with caviar was also a hit! My friend got the "oh my god" roll which was a fascinating presentation and she got her mochi ice cream which was also very light and refreshing. I would definitely come back despite the little hiccup!

I'm assuming it's a family-owned joint because the one and only guy working front of house always takes care of me. He's awesome. The place is cute. It's tastefully decorated, and they have a very-on-brand, ginormous full moon light on the wall that's illuminated from behind. It's super cool. I've only ever seen a couple other diners in there with me at any time. The food comes out super fast, which is great, because I'm hungry as soon as i step in the place. The prices are reasonable, the portions are generous, and the food is always good. If you're in the area, this place is a must-stop.

Good amount of fish vs rice. Everyone is very attentive. Service is very good. The ambiance is interesting :) nothing fancy but not too bland either. There are full moon/moon related decorations. The rolls are also named with the Moon theme in mind. Overall very nice and we will be back to try their ramen !

We came in for a birthday party & got one of the Teppanyaki tables. Our waiter was awesome & the Chef for the table was well suited for the job! He was so fun and cracked a lot of jokes that everyone enjoyed. He kept everyone engaged throughout the entire experience. He made everyone at the table catch rice in their mouths- even if it took 5-6 tries per person The food was delicious - the portions were on point. The prices were fair. It's on expensive side, but part of the cost is definitely for the experience, which is well worth it. All in all, everyone had an amazing time. This is the perfect place to come with a group to share some laughs and create a memory that nobody will forget. It is so fun to see your meal cooked right before your eyes & interact with the chef throughout. I've been to similar places in the past & none of them compare to Kasai! We will definitely be back!

The price was confusing. $30 service charge?? And that's not inclusive of tip? Our total bill was $178 so that would be a 16% service charge which is insane. Usually service charges are a few percent to help cover small costs like cc processing, to-go packaging, things like that. So then on top of that I had to tip of course as I don't want to not give the chef nothing. Just seems a bit extreme. Everything is already on the expensive side which is fine as it's a nice restaurant but the additional service charge was too much. Also the percentage options were incorrect. The amount it told me to tip to make it 18% was actually 26%. Probably an issue with their POS and not them but seems like a money grab and something they should prioritize fixing.

Traditional sushi does not have lettuce...bad sushi places and grocery stores use lettuce. Second, the head chef seems to have let an apprentice take on the omakase. Great news, they have replaced the lettuce with cucumber! Maybe chef got some negative feedback.

My honey did not like the music. The food was decent. One thing I loved was that they had fresh wasabi. It's amazing. The flavor profile is fresh, bright, with an herbaceous heat. The bad thing is that if you get it to go, the flavor peaks about 5 min after it's grated, so you gotta be quick. We ordered a lot to be able to try a lot. Shrimp tempura-4 pieces, standard tempura, nothing amazing, nothing terrible. Very crunchy, served with either a spicy Mayo or soy dipping sauce. The hot green tea was perfect. Piping hot, you get your own tea pot so it stays hot throughout your meal. Definitely would drink this again. I was disappointed they had a bunch of other drinks listed online but didn't have available when we were there. I really wanted an iced matcha or taro drink. Tenderloin caviar with crispy rice 4 pieces for $22. Meh. They were his favorite, I thought it was just okay. The tenderloin was pretty "well done" and I prefer beef to be cooked a little less. You could barely taste the caviar and I didn't like the way they did their crispy rice in comparison to other places I've had crispy rice. The beef flavor was nice though. Unagi with eel sauce, as good as expected. This is also something most sushi places offer. It was done well, would eat it again. The ratio of rice to unagi was good, didn't have any sort of fishy flavor, not too much eel sauce to make it overly sweet. Yuzu SP- well balanced combination. I'm a huge fan of blue crab. 8/10 Blue crab with cucumber hand roll. So good! It wasn't super giant, good ratio of rice to blue crab. You get the freshness of the cucumber, the mild sweetness of the blue crab. Yasss.Def would eat again. 9/10 Mustard aioli shrimp with cucumber. Meh. Not much flavor. This was the last roll I ordered. Not a fan. The shrimp was cooked fine but flavor was very flat. Their other rolls were better. I'd skip this one next time. 3/10 Yuzu poke roll - great combination of flavors, fresh, bright, and the yuzu was not excessive. 8.5/10 Scallop- I asked for it to be spicy as spicy scallop is one of my go to orders for sushi. The scallop flavor itself was subtle and fresh, but to make it spicy they added a pickled jalapeño and some yuzu aguachile. Meh. Wouldn't order again this again as a spicy one. It probably tasted decent as it was. 4/10 Overall, I'm glad I tried it. Love the fresh wasabi but it's not close to my house. So if I was closer, I'd probably be back more.

The edamame was salted well throughout where a lot of places just put the salt on top only. We ordered a couple varieties of sake which were both good. Out of all of the things we ordered the karange skewer was just a little more oily than were use to, but still good. The spicy salmon roll had really great flavor and the lollipop roll was probably one of the better versions that we have had. On a Sunday evening, after checking out the Desert Botanical Garden, I was looking for some food in…read morethe area. I came across Zu Izakaya and it's great reviews as one of the options. I love Japanese food so my decision was made. I drove over and parked in their complimentary lot. Ambiance (3.5/5): I've been to Japan and there are plenty of izakayas there. Think of them as small bars which often serve solid food. Zu fits that bit. It's a relatively small restaurant, probably seats about 30 people. and it's pretty no frills for a Japanese spot. I was seated at a booth in the corner of the restaurant. They have free WiFi which is always a good touch. Service (3/5): Service was friendly, though a bit inconsistent. My waitress wasn't as attentive as I would have liked. The type of service where you have to flag them down to get what you want and to close out. Drinks (4/5): Zu has a nice menu of Japanese and Korean beverages, including sake, soju, Japanese beer, and more. With that being said, I just had an iced green tea. Food (4/5): I got a nice variety. I went with the Japanese sausage off of the grill menu, the OBI mayo roll off of the sushi menu, and the cheese corn off of the appetizer menu. Let's start with the sausage. It's a small item, two small sausages, but absolutely delicious. The sausage was bursting with flavor and basted in a sweet sauce. Minus the portion size, perfection. The cheese corn also hit the spot, but the execution was off. The corn is served on a hot platter, and unfortunately some of the corn on the edges was badly burnt. The type of situation where they should start over. Which they didn't. Lastly, the OBI mayo roll is essentially a California roll with marinated warm shrimp on top in a mayo sauce. I didn't love the hot and cold combo (shrimp and sushi), but outside of the temperature, it was a delicious roll. All in all, a very food meal. My only gripe with Japanese food is that it can get expensive quick. Given that Zu is in Tempe, I was hoping that prices would be a little cheaper. With that being said, they do have a solid happy hour (and reverse happy hour) with both food and drink specials. Next time I stop by, I'd like to check out some of their Korean options. I focused on the Japanese stuff this time (which makes the majority of the menu). Next time around, the bulgogi is calling my name!
