Amazing amazing! My bartender was awesome and he was the one that also took my order. I came in and my order wasn't ready so I asked if I could sit at the bar. At first the greeter was a little skeptical of me because to be honest the restaurant gives a 'certain' feel. I just ate lunch there and had a steak sandwich. My steak sandwich was cooked perfectly and was the best steak sandwich I've ever eaten anywhere. I've passed by this place 197,346 times and didn't really think about stopping in until I saw a small sign on the side of the building bragging about how many chicken-fried streaks they've served. My interest was piqued. When you walk in there's a definite dive/roadhouse feel to it, and definitely not on purpose or in a kitchy way. The staff is friendly and makes you feel taken care of. Since I was alone I ponied up to the bar for a Shiner Bock and to study the menu. I knew I was getting the chicken-fried steak, but wanted to see if there were going to be other things I wanted to come back for. Good news, there were. That chicken-fried steak looked so good when it came out I forgot to take a picture of it and just started eating. The breading had so much crunch and flavor. The meat was tender and meaty. The mashed potatoes were chunky, but still creamy somehow and definitely delicious. But the real star of the show was the gravy. My words couldn't do it justice, so just know it's really good. It'll be hard to not get the chicken-fried steak next time I go, but I'm really excited to try the pork chops next time I go. read more

Recommend by a friend we stopped in with a large party. We were seated promptly. Our waitress was nice but short with us. The place wasn't overly busy but it was possible her section was. We ordered several ribeyes, a New York and the chicken friend steak between us. The ribeyes were ok, nothing to brag about. The New York was the best tasting of the steaks but still an average steak and the best tasting meal. The chicken fried steak was fresh and large. I ordered the small one because I was unable to really judge the sizes from pics. This is the best chicken fried steak I've had while in AZ. It's not a frozen hockey puck that's been warmed up. It's definitely a homemade meal but breading was much more than the actual stead hidden inside. The gravy was very tasty and made the meal. We topped it all off with their Sunday which was good l, the cobbler was excellent and the bread pudding wasn't bad. Hate to rate any place one star, but this was not a great experience at all. The server came by 2 times while we were reviewing the menu but when we closed them she took over 7 mins to take our order walking bay and forth. Finally she took our order. I asked for something not quite on menu but doable. Open faces chili burger. I described what I wanted and asked if they could do it. She came back and said sure. Food came. Right away not what I asked for. I should have sent it back. I asked for more chili and was charged quite a bit for it, but that was not so much the issue... The chili was just not good. My roomie order the special which was cod. It was bland and not seasoned, even with salt. The place was loud when huge parties started to appear. Chairs were in the walkways and I would say dangerous should a fire have occurred and the place needed to evacuate. Not good. All in all it will be some time before I ever come back to this place and will no longer recommend to anyone else. I've always liked the chicken fried steak but wanted to try something new. I think they should lower menu items and focus on what they are known for. Don't eat the chili. Takes like from can and cheaper brand too. This is not Texas style chili. read more

We picked this place because of their ratings and they lived up to the expectations. Our waitress was kind but sassy and it was the perfect vibe for this group of friends lol. I'm from South Texas so I decided to give this place a try. The decor is fantastic. I'm from a very small town in Texas that's not even on the map and they had a poster from my hometown. The waitress was friendly and promptly provided us with drinks. I ordered a long island which was delicious. I then ordered the chicken goodness meal. The meal was huge with a lot of mashed potatoes. The gravy was okay and the breading on the meat became mushy and fell off. The okra was good but the sauce provided was a little weird tasting like tartar sauce. My suggestion is if you're going to order the chicken goodness with all the food, eat it fast or it'll mush up on you. I will probably be back to give their steaks a try. read more

Here it is Sunday afternoon, and we decided to head over to TexAz Grill on a belated birthday gathering of the family for our grandson. We arrived, parked our vehicles, and walked right on in. We were set up immediately for our seating by Mary our server. We picked this place as our grandson loves their "chicken fried steak". While our server was getting our order for our drinks, we were all looking over the menu. I must of had picked four choices on what I wanted to have. When it came time to order I leaned to my grandson's choice, of the "chicken fried steak". Both my grandson and I ordered the smaller size portion of the "chicken fried steak". I remembered that when you order the regular size, it's about the size of the State of Texas. When our dinner was being brought out, I looked at my dinner, and I said wow, this is still a huge dish. I am still glad I ordered the small one. All of us were happy with our choice of dinner. Mary, our server was made aware at the beginning that we were there to celebrate our grandson's birthday, so towards the end of our dinner, she brought out a small ice cream with a lit candle for our grandson. We commenced to sing "happy birthday". That was a very nice of the server to acknowledge the celebration. I haven't been here in a while, and have forgotten about all the memorabilia on walls, which our grandkids got a big kick out of. Why oh why isn't there beer on tap? A roadhouse style place like this screams for tap beer and with a name like TexAZ they should have one TX one and one AZ one so you can have beer tasting duels.Anyway, definitely an atmospheric place to feast on country fare and if they take my suggestions they will be even better. Coleslaw tasted like it was just mayo added to cabbage so we doctored ours at the table with salt, sugar, pepper, and asked for some lemons. Much better, but I don't go out to eat to be my own chef. Try adding the items suggested or toss in something like celery seeds, caraway, a hint of onion, apple bits, splash of vinegar, salad dressing like Miracle Whip instead of mayo. Find some combo of flavors and make it something people will look forward to and be a signature slaw. Biscuit was tasty but don't microwave it as it needs a quick trip to the oven to get back a slight dry crumb instead of being soggy warm. Meals are served on undersized plates so if you move one thing, something else will slide off. Consider serving sides like mashed potatoes in separate dishes and let the meats be solo stars. The chicken fried chicken meal looked just like the Chicken Fried Goodness of pork, beef, chicken and both were compromised by having the mashed potatoes (excellent homemade BTW) on the bottom, then had gravy on top of them, then the meats on top of that, and then more gravy. This plating compromises the crispy crusts, essentially steaming them and causing them to separate from the meat. Flavors were good for all, but the anticipated crispy "chicken fry" effect was only available for the parts that had managed to escape the gravy deluge. Tasty food should not be sacrificed by poor plating. Also, add some eye appeal atop the sea of white and tan with a little garnish--as simple as a little scattering of clipped parsley. Thankfully my catfish was spared the gravy drowning since I ordered the fries, which I was told were steak fries but were more like home fries but without the benefit of onion for flavor. No need to serve water unless requested--why waste water in AZ? WIth a little tweaking, the lone star from TX can be added to the 4 you already have to give you 5! read more

This is such a dive if you can't tell by the posh interior *ahem* The inside is almost comical with antiques, vintage signs, and random hats, yes hats, lining the walls and rafters. It's like a cross between your uncle's mancave basement and a saloon. Kinda dank, kinda dark, but not pretentious. But there's a reason this place has been around for so long despite the interior decorating faux pas. They've got some really good comfort food. Of course I had to have their signature dish while I was here, CHICKEN FRIED STEAK. I LOVED this steak. First of all, the fried steak patty was as big as the plate, so they don't skimp one bit, and I ordered the smaller portion! The bigger portion is double steaks! The steak was tender and flavorful. It wasn't tough or grisly as you might run into at other places. The breading was just right, not too thick or bready. It was just crisp enough to soak the white gravy. The gravy was on point by the way. Some places taste like its gravy was just corn starch added to milk. This was a hearty gravy that made the fried steak irresistible. With a big scoop of homemade rustic mashed potatoes, I was in carb heaven. I also tasted the catfish and it was also delicious. Juicy and meaty nicely coated with a breading, I thought it was cooked perfectly. Everything tasted homemade from scratch, except for the corn, but we can let that slide when everything else is so good. Been decades since I last ate here. An AZ and midtown staple. I usually do not come here because they do not really have smaller options or La Carte things to eat that I like. If you like this type of food you will love it here. The fried chicken steak is actually, really good. You get very large servings with stick to you ribs type of food. That meal comes with a salad and smashed potatoes so you will roll out of this place full and happy. Rolling, Rolling, Rolling song comes to mind with the theme of the restaurant. lol, haha! The place itself is very quirky. Fun times. We stopped by since we had a business function in the area. The service was not that great and our server was a tad snippy with our large party. Went here last night for dinner. Totally had no idea this restaurant is as interesting as the food is. I had the pork chop (1). It was porky goodness. It was juicy and delicious. The biscuits were delicious and fluffly. It's good, down home cooking at it's finest. Chicken Fried Steak was huge and both my husband and daughter ended up taking home 1/2 and they said it was delicous. The waitress was great and she was attentive but not intrusive.
