Tried Texaz Grill again after Covid. I was in the area and thought about those Chicken Fried Steaks. I arrived at about 11:30 and there were three full tables. Texaz Grill sported the full Texas decor and country music I had remembered. I ordered their famous Chicken Fried Steak, which came to $14.95 plus tax and tip. Texaz Grill has been known for their huge CFS and my plate was overflowing with a crispy CFS, corn and mashed potatoes. Sadly, about 1/3 of my CFS was just batter. The gravy was very pedestrian, so, between that and the excessive batter to meat ratio, I couldn't say that it was my 'best in the world' CFS. read more

We have driven by here a ton and always said we have to stop by- and we finally did. I regret not coming in earlier!! This place is the real deal. The food is absolutely delightful. Being from the south, we like to think that we know good country cooking and this place has it all. We absolutely devoured the chicken fried steak, ribeye, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, green beans and peach cobbler. We left absolutely stuffed but can not wait to come back-- hopefully for Sunday Brunch! Inside decor is very cute, and kitschy in a good way. Our server was incredibly nice and welcoming. Boyfriend took me here recently as he was watching a friend's pet in the area and TEXAZ was one of the options he gave me. Good thing as I had just finished a gym challenge and wanted a good meal to celebrate. It wasn't busy when we arrived so we had choice of where to sit. While the menu isn't terribly extensive, it was definitely hard to pick what to order. Their service was quick and she basically picked my meal for me since I was so indecisive. Chicken fried chicken meal it was! And when you order slaw as a side, consider it a massive house side salad when it arrives before your meal- honestly could be a meal in of itself with chicken. I couldn't finish my meal sadly, thank Lord for to go boxes. #FunFact the house gravy comes in a coffee cup when you order it on the side. Like soup. read more

Just what you want and expect from a Texas joint. Everything fried is great, and their gravy is honestly delicious. Not super salty or even heavy, if you can believe it. On Halloween we called to make sure they were open normal business hours and the girl we talked to said yes, open until 9. We got there around 8:15. We tried to pull open the doors and they were locked... Understandable if they want to close early for a holiday but, we had called to check so it was a super disappointing experience to have went out of the way to call and check, drive there, and then been lied to. Doubly disappointed because I had been dreaming about the food all evening and had excitedly told the neighbors where we were going after festivities. Called the next day to talk to a manager because I was so dissatisfied and the first one we talked to was very understanding and said the manager on duty the night before would give us a call later to make it right. He never did, so I called the restaurant back later that evening thinking perhaps they had forgotten and asked to speak to a manager and the girl on the phone asked if this was about the Halloween incident... Why would another staff member who wasn't a manager know about this unless they had been talking about it to other staff??? I made sure to only tell a manager about the experience. It's very disrespectful that the staff had been talking about us... very unprofessional. Nonetheless was then transferred to the manager who had been working the night previously. Told him the experience and he couldn't have sounded more bothered to listen to me. He also lied to me. Said that they had locked the doors at 8:30 bc it was slow. I remember checking the time on my phone. I don't go to restaurants 30 mins before closing unless it's to go because I work in the industry. It was 8:20 when I looked at my phone after trying the door because we had a quick smoke before trying to go inside. All I got was a, "sorry we disappointed you". Normally when a restaurant makes a mistake on their end they offer some sort of apology gesture to promote a good relationship and we received nothing on the promise that they would make it right. Overall very very bad customer service perhaps the worst I've gotten in the valley. So sad because the food is so good but it was not an enjoyable experience to be made to feel like a burden, the staff talking about the experience when they should have never known, have been lied to twice, and then received nothing after everything to bring our business back after such a poor experience. Was craving them so bad that night but now I don't think I'll ever crave them again. Had heard they were under new management...and it shows. read more

Always my go to place for authentic REAL chicken fried steak in Phoenix and maybe the best in all of Arizona. And I'm verrrrry picky about my CFS! I'm a Dallas transplant and it tastes like home. My boyfriend and I went in and had their prime rib, which was excellent cooked exactly how we wanted it to be. We had reservations and we seated right away. Our server and others came and checked on us quite a bit. The server was very knowledgeable. I think this is our third time here. We know a few people who always rave about this place, and we keep thinking maybe it will get better. Maybe we were there on an off night. But I must conclude after this visit that this isn't really the case. Some folks clearly do love it, but I am totally underwhelmed. Our table this time ordered the southern pork chop, chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, and smoked prime rib. Some of this we had previously, some was new. First the chicken-fried steak. I believe I commented last time that it was mostly breading, and not very flavorful. That is still the case. Without the gravy it has no flavor at all. I would expect some from the breading, but it just wasn't there. Denny's makes a better one. I am not kidding. The southern pork chop is basically a chicken-fried pork chop. This one was pretty good because there was more meat than breading, and so I could taste the pork. The breading and gravy worked well with it, but it was still lacking any real flavor to distinguish it from other restaurants. The chicken-fried chicken was similar to the pork. More meat, and you could taste the meat, but the "chicken-fried" aspect is totally lacking. The smoked prime rib was easily the best dish we ordered. The au jus was a bit salty, but it was a very smoky and flavorful hunk of meat. Portions are reasonably large, though for some reason they have reduced the size of their plates. We compared to our old photos and it was obvious. Seems silly to me to cram the same amount of food onto a smaller plate. The "fries" were actually large chunks of potato that were not seasoned in any way. The outer bit was fried, but the rest was like a baked potato. The mashed potatoes were just mashed. No garlic or anything. The cajun seasoning on the table helps. And the salads were not very popular among those who ordered them. So all in all a very expensive, and very disappointing dining experience. We have their punch cards, and they're half full. But we have no plan to return and so will likely just toss the cards in the trash. read more

When in TexAZ do as the locals do - order their signature Chicken Fried Steak! Served with mashed potatoes and smothered in country gravy! Woo saaa that'll stick to your ribs goodness! But this massive culinary experience is so big they layer it double decker style! Ginormous portions of Southern deliciousness! Love the vintage TX, AZ, western vibe decor. First of all we were out here on a baseball vacation/ tournament, My husband loves his prime Rib Dinners but I was not about to eat at a big chain restaurant when you can do that any time! so I yelped prime Rib/steak house and this lil Local Gem popped up!!! Well let me just say this Trumps any steak place!!! and if I lived here this would definately be our spot instead of any other place! Oh and get this all their steaks are hand cut in house FRESH USDA ALL DAY EVERY DAY! Sides were delicious as well and those biscuits yum!!! Found this little gem on Yelp. I LOVE a good country fried steak, so I had to try it. Came in with my family and were promptly greeted and were seated within 5 mins. Loved the fun decor. Our server Devin was very friendly and explained the menu to us when I mentioned it was our first time here. Our drinks came out promptly followed by our salads and BISCUITS! It was love at first bite BEST buttermilk biscuits hands down! Pros: Friendly & prompt service (always important) Delicious biscuits w/real butter AND let's not forget the star of the show... BEST Country Fried Steak I've ever had. OH and the portions were huge!!! Fabulous fabulous fabulous!!! The food here is just indescribable, it is drool worthy!!!!! Down home comfort food to the max! We had chicken fried steak, (which by the way they have the very best chicken fried steak you could ever experience and the quantity so huge it will serve two people two meals!) make sure to ask for extra gravy to take home so you have enough for your leftovers! Comes with skin on mashed potatoes, And a really nice fresh salad with chopped up green olives and ranch dressing. We also had corn, fried shrimp, amazing coleslaw, homemade biscuits, and for appetizers we had fried okra with an amazing dipping sauce and macaroni and cheese! Then... History

Established in 1985.

When we opened in 1985 as Lone Star Steaks, we promised to serve great food, from a real Texan, done one meal at a time, at Phoenix's Original Texas Steak House. We never imagined that anybody would be so arrogant as to try and lock up the name for the great state of Texas. We were wrong. A huge restaurant conglomerate from Kansas has threatened to take us to court to force us to quit using the words "Lone Star". Well - it seems there just wasn't enough room in town for two LONE STARS. We decided we'd rather keep on putting our money into great food and great service than blow it on a bunch of lawyers. So even though we were right and had a legitimate claim to use our old name, we sure didn't want to be confused with some slick, national chain with almost 100 restaurants. So - the old Lone Star became the TEXAZ GRILL at 16th Street and Bethany Home Road. And as for the new carpetbaggers in town; yeah, well, real Texans know what's right.

They do have a ~$2 card fee, but for the cost of breakfast that wasn't enough to drop it a star. The 4.8 Google review is on the nose. We will be back!

We LOVED our visit to Diner 50 and this is now my go-to breakfast spot downtown. Everything was perfection. We loved the art inside and outside, music, and vibe. Our server was warm, enthusiastic, and had immaculate timing. We appreciated how playful and passionate she was. I swear she knew the name of every guest who walked through the door, and asked them thoughtful questions about their loved ones or travels. This is obviously a place that people return to and become regulars at. An excellent sign. What we were not expecting (and SO DELIGHTED WITH) was the cat rescue space through the adjoining wall. We are all cat-obsessed, so walking in and seeing a room full of absolute sweeties playing around added 100,000 points to the experience. The coffee? Epic. Served in a nearly soup bowl sized cup (hot) or gigantic mason jar (iced). Diner coffee can sometimes leave much to be desired but this coffee was soooo delicious and strong. The food? So awesome. I went with a classic breakfast plate - eggs, sausage, potatoes, blueberry pancakes. I added a biscuit because the menu said they were homemade and I had to try it. It was exceptional, I would go back just for the sausage and biscuit and coffee. My coworker got the huevos rancheros with red and green sauce and I was massively jealous. Everyone left over-caffeinated with bellies full of delicious food and hearts warm from being so well taken care of by our lovely server and getting to play with kitties. The prices are fair, the food and coffee are delicious and homemade, and the service is exceptional. I am someone who really values being involved with my community, so I feel great about spending my money somewhere that is clearly beloved by my neighbors and pours back into them. Opened in 1929, it was…read moreoriginally called "Birch's Pharmacy" and true to most pharmacies back then, it had a soda fountain. Fast forward nine years to 1938, and Fred MacAlpine purchased it, renaming it for his namesake, and operating it as a full-service pharmacy and soda fountain until 1991. It was then purchased by a couple who still own it today and have kept it in as much of its original condition as possible, including the soda fountain, the counter, and the malt machine. When you park and walk to the front of the yellow building, you can't help but feel joy. The storefront windows, the antiques, all of it make you wonder just how far back in time you're going to travel. Once you've stepped foot inside and onto the checkered floor, you can't help but smile at the counter, all of the antiques from decades past, and the wait staff who wears 1950s uniforms. We slid into our wood booth with the tiny jukebox on the wall and immediately got to reviewing the extensive menu. Everything... and I mean EVERYTHING... looked good. Bonus: They have gluten-free bread! My husband chose the cheeseburger and I chose the turkey BLT (on gluten-free bread) - both were delicious! We then opted to share a mint chocolate chip milkshake that was created on the original 1940s machine - something that completed the experience. When we were done, we were fortunate enough to chat with Monica Heizenrader, co-owner of MacAlpine's wth her daughter. She is a very kind woman who is very passionate about keeping the history of this diner alive, even taking to selling antiques (in the other rooms of the building) to help support the upkeep. However, with rising costs and some family challenges, it's getting tough. She was proud to have kept this going as long as she and her family have and even mentioned some of the more notable people that have stepped into the diner over the decades, including Barry Goldwater (a regular), Joan Ganz Cooney (one of the creators of Sesame Street), Frank Lloyd Wright, Aunt Maud, Marshall Good, Wayne Newton (who was discovered by a talent scout there), and more! MacAlpine's is the only place around that I know still serves them. From their menu it looks like you can get your drink in close to a hundred different flavors. Very nice - but cherry is always my go to. My mom chose Black Cherry which seems like a small distinction but her choice was better. We split the Turkey Bacon Croissant sandwich. I'd say the sandwich was just average, however service was excellent with different people continuously checking on us. The interior here is very dark/cozy and filled with antiques, taking you back to another era. There's a small antique shop you can step through to on the other side if you feel like browsing after you eat. We were too full to enjoy dessert but they have so many great options: shakes, malts, sundaes, homemade pie. I really need to get down here more and their special offerings.

The fact that the restaurant was very close to our Airbnb, and did not require a reservation also felt like a sign to make the visit. The spot is definitely trendy, and parking was tricky. Uber/Lyft would be my recommendation, but there is a paid parking garage down a couple of streets. We didn't need a reservation since we had a small party, but I would recommend if if you're coming with a party of four or more. We sat at the bar and ordered four dishes from different categories, which was a great way to sample the menu; though honestly I think we probably could have gotten away with just 3 dishes for a party of 2. We tried Yam Mamuang Boran (old-style green mango salad), Boo Pad Pong Garee (crab curry with ginger), Tom Yum Haeng Sen Yai (dry tom yum with wide noodles), and Naem Khao Tot (crispy rice salad with fermented pork sausage). The noodles and salad were definitely my favorite though everything was seasoned really well and incredibly flavorful. What I loved most was how thoughtfully prepared everything felt. The restaurant has a really sincere, home-style feel, and you can tell the food is rooted in tradition while still feeling special and elevated. My advice: skip the chef's selection and order à la carte. Just be prepared for the food to come out quickly and all at once.

Oh boy, where do I even begin with Texas Grill? Let's just say the experience was as big as the portions they served. And by big, I mean you could probably feed a small army with a single plate. Seriously, I could have used their chicken fried steak as a pillow, it was that massive! Now, let's talk about the gravy situation. Dry is an understatement. It felt like I was trying to swallow the Sahara Desert with every bite. Note to the chef: gravy should be smooth and creamy, not a desert mirage. Speaking of the chicken fried steak, I have to say, it was a bit of a letdown. I mean, I get it, Texas Grill, and everything is bigger when Texas is involved, but did you have to supersize the breading? I had to search for the steak amidst all that crispy coating. It was like playing hide-and-seek, but with my taste buds. And don't even get me started on the salad. Brown lettuce? Really? I thought I was in a comedy sketch or something. I half-expected the waiter to jump out and yell, "Surprise, it's a prank!" But alas, it was not a joke. Just a sad, wilted excuse for a salad. Blue cheese dressing which tasted out of the bottle was the only highlight from the salad. Now, I have to admit, the food was okay, but it definitely didn't live up to the hype. I've driven by this place for the past 20 years, wondering what all the fuss was about. Well, now I know. It's the kind of place you drive by, keep driving, and never look back. The mystery has been solved, folks! So, if you're in the mood for massive portions, dry gravy, breading galore, and a side of brown lettuce, then Texas Grill might just be your dream come true. I will say the food is good- especially if you are looking for a yummy comfort meal. Now, with that being said.. It is a KNOWN fact the parking lot sucks to get in and out. Honestly, we would probably go more often if it wasn't so bad. This evening pulling in, my husband and I were verbally attacked by another so called patron. I get out of my car, and this old (WT) lady comes up to me like she was going to assault me, and yells, "are you F'ing kidding me." Apparently she didn't like the fact, I turned in as she was just sitting there on 16th St. I ran inside to make them aware of the situation- As I was talking to the staff, including the manager, these ladies walk in like nothing happened and like they did nothing. I let the manager know that we are regulars here and I don't feel safe eating in the same establishment with these ladies-- as they literally verbally attacked us. He goes, well they are regulars as well. So, me coming in shaken up that out of no where these ladies (I may have used more colorful language) attacked us. I said forget it, we won't be back and you lost 2 customers and everyone we know. Its sad that we can't go out to dinner without being verbally attacked. Man, I love this place. Every couple of months I get a hanker - you know, that rumbly sensation in your belly that somehow translates to english when the sound makes it to your ears... it says 'CHICKEN FRIED STEAK NOW' with enthusiasm - and the only way to put it to bed is to head down to the TEXAZ Grill. If you ask, they'll let you have TWO biscuits instead of 1 with a healthy wheat roll, and you can load em up with butter and honey while waiting for that monster-sized chicken-fried steak to land in front of you. It's the stuff of dreams. Look, everyone and their mother serves chicken-fried steak, but this place has been doing it RIGHT for like 20 years now, hand-hammered till it's so thin there's only one side, and then battered and fried like nobody's business. Not only is it the best in town, they also give you 2 of 'em stacked up so you can save one for a sandwich the next day. Sure, you could just eat them both while you're there, but then you wouldn't have room for the bread pudding with whiskey sauce. Lord, don't even get me started on the bread pudding. Our new neighbors invited us to join them at this neighborhood favorite. Could not have been more excited to find this place now so close by. Was in the mood for a steak. Had the filet, Was cooked absolutely perfect. My wife was not in the mood for a big meal so she had the catfish. Breaded just right. Light and fluffy. My friends and I ended up here after being turned away from another restaurant for having a "too big" party, despite having a reservation. We chose this place based on its ratings, and it exceeded our expectations. Our waitress was kind but sassy, which suited our group perfectly. She anticipated our needs and the drinks were strong, which we loved. It was my birthday, and this place saved the day. Everyone enjoyed their food, and there were no mistakes. I was so full, but my steak (medium) was incredibly tender that I had to resist finishing it to avoid overeating. I highly recommend this place for its food, servers, and lively atmosphere. If I could eat it every day without gaining a pound I would, but as with all comfort food at comes at the expense of a few extra calories. The BBQ here is my favorite BBQ ever, very smokey rich flavor with their sauce. The BBQ plates are only served as specials a few nights a week but definitely worth seeking out. Had the Santa Anna Shake recently, an ice cream beverage made with tequila?! Surprisingly it worked great, very delicious. Well let me just tell ya.........I was born in Texas and moved to Phoenix when I was 3. Lived there for 29 years. I now live in Round Rock, Texas. I have never had a ribeye that tasted better than the one at Texaz Grill. I have eaten steaks all over the state of Texas and not one of them has tasted better than there. I have never had a plate there that was bad. I kinda agree on the whole Vodka thing that one reviewer stated. For those of you who think the place has bad steaks, well you should come to Austin (close to Round Rock) and taste the ones here before you complain. True to all the reviews, Texaz Grill is indeed a thriving local spot filled with the owners quirky character over its 25+yr history! all the waitresses provide that at home graciousness you'd expect from Aunt May. The food is down home scratch cooking in ginormous Texas portions. You'll likely not need a drink refill either as the water cups could drench 2! Fried catfish is succulent and tasty no need for additional seasoning, while their staple chicken fried steak lunch portion could put one under food coma if finished. Help me understand the bad reviews... or maybe one time experience doesn't speak volumes, but I was under the belief that first impressions are key. Anyways, came here after my flight because it was close to my hotel. I ordered the Prime Rib 16oz Mulligan cut, medium rare (the only right way to eat prime ribs of a cut this good), and was sold on the first bite. Now I know what Portland is missing: steakhouses like this one. The hot au jus made it even better. I am ashamed to say that I ate the whole thing in one sitting, but can you blame me? We are never disappointed when we go to TEXAZ Grill. It is always a treat and a wonderful experience. The prices are high but well worth the price for food, experience, atmosphere, and quality. The only thing I would say it the 40+oz Porterhouse is not as good and the 20+oz. Not saying there was anything wrong with the bigger portion, we are well aware it is more difficult to cook and marinate a larger portion of meat. The 20oz was like butter and the 40oz was amazing as well, just not as to die for as the 20oz. Complements to the chef for everything, Green Salad was amazing too. Highly recommend it for all occasions. read more

I think Pauly C. may be too GTL for TEXAZ Grill... seemed like a pretty legitimate review (sarcasm). Coming from a regular patron of the neighborhood joint, its one of my favorite spots in town. I anxiously await the moment when their piping hot chicken fried steak comes out with its peppery gravy and I venture into Texas culinary heaven. Their beer battered shrimp are huge and are hands down the best shrimp I've had in town, no joke! Finish with a slice of their pecan pie, and bring on a pleasant food coma. I love TEXAZ. Just Say No! I am a big Chicken Fried Steak fan, so the first time my wife and I were at Texaz Grill, we could not wait to try their signature dish but, when the food arrived, it was "just OK". On our second visit it was just plain awful. The breading was coming off the steak and the gravy was more paste than gravy. There was certainly a lot of food on our plates. I assume they were going for quantity over quality. For the $35 price tag we will simply save the calories and not return. The only reason for the 2 star review is that the servers were nice and considerate. read more

The people here are so nice so it's upsetting to have to write this. Most of the items on the menu are coated in seasoning that has MSG. My family has left with asthma attacks, itchy skin and allergic reactions due to the high MSG content. They even have shakers on the table with MSG in it. Potato chips taste *GOOD* because they're seasoned with MSG. MSG is like crack for your tastebuds but it also causes brain issues because it's an excitotoxin. (Just google it.) I hope the restaurant will swap these MSG seasonings out in the future. read more

Stopped in for lunch yesterday...Was craving a good burger. However, when I saw the Chicken Fried Turkey on the menu, I had to put the burger on hold and enjoy one of my favorite items on the menu. (This is not always on the menu) All I can say is that this meal puts a smile on my face each time I eat it. The turkey is nice and tender and huge. The gravy is phenomenal and of course the mashed potatoes are that perfect home cookin' you want when you come to TEXAZ. Service at the bar is always terrific no matter who is behind the bar. read more

This restaurant was recommended to us during our stay in Phoenix. It does not take reservations so we knew to come a bit early to beat the crowds. The place was hopping and it was very energetic, loud and lively. We felt like we were with family and every one knew each other. Very welcoming. We all ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and the home made coleslaw. All I can say is that the food was amazing! Definitely come hungry, but even then, be prepared to take home a "doggie bag". We look forward to our next trip there. read more

We came in for dinner and we're glad we did. We ordered the prime rib and the chicken fried steak. All was delicious and the portion sizes were better than what we paid for, even the side salad is big. The service was very good. The restrooms were a little small but clean. I hated the parking both front and back, the spaces were small and there weren't enough for such a popular place, and it's shared my 4 other business on that corner. We would recommend anyone to stop in for a bite. read more

Thank you Texas for introducing me to the Steak Lin Su Saturday special! It's a fantastic steak topped with béarnaise sauce, artichokes, and mmmmm shrimp. YUM! The chicken fried chicken is DELISH!!! I completely forgot to take pics of the food. Overall, it is a simple smashed style of burger patty. The ambiance is lower lighting with a western aged setting. Think traditional western style. It was my first time and while not my preferred style of burger, the food is decent. This is a place that offers customizable food, TV's and it was not too noisy. I beg you to try it if you have not... most people don't know they even have it, but luckily, for my coworker and I, Director of Operations Matt, walked up to us as we dined in last Wednesday and let us sample the Green Chile. As most of you know, I can't hang when it comes to spicy foods, but this chile is THE EXCEPTION (even though it's only "mildly" spicy). We each ordered the 2 meat plate, but we were so appreciative of the sample he gave us, otherwise we would never have known about it. We ended up ordering 2 burritos for our lunch the very next day!! You can also add cheese to it! I went in again for the 3rd day in a row on Friday, since I'm not sure when I'll work in that area again (I was 10 min away all last week)!! I asked my boss if I could work there on Mondays and Fridays, that's how good this burrito is!! They also have a MEAN Pecan Pie. It's called Bekke's Smoked Pecan Pie and it too, is a must try item! Matt told us it's a secret recipe from one of their employees and the crusts are hand pressed daily. Using a machine is just NOT the same, and I believe it! Since I am not sure when I'll make my way back there, I also bought another pie on Friday. So far, I've only had 1 slice because I need to ration accordingly! Prior to my 3 visits last week, I went to this location last July, when a friend was visiting from out of town. The place is clean and welcoming, and they have the best customer service! On Thursday and Friday when I ordered online and picked up, my orders were ready before the estimated pick up time! Mark was at the pick up window both times and he rocks!! I had forgotten to ask for the Banana Pudding I ordered on Wednesday when we dined in. I called as I drove home, realizing I left without it. Amanda was super friendly when she answered the phone and assured me I would have it when I came the next day. Mark delivered and had it in my bag the next day when I picked up our burritos. Service with a smile is what you'll get here! You cannot go wrong no matter what you order here! The meats are absolutely perfect and the flavor profile on everything is mind-blowing! Do yourself a favor and ask for the Green Chile anything next time you're here. Tell them I sent you! Don't sleep on the Banana Pudding or Bekke's Smoked Pecan Pie, either. Something about that smoking process makes the pie stand out from every other pecan pie you've ever tasted, trust me. It's also NOT super sweet like you're probably used to. If you call in, you can't place an order by phone, so do it online and you'll get a text with an estimated time of pick up. You can skip the line inside, too. Just walk up to the pick up window and you're good to go when you ring the little doorbell. There is plenty of parking outside and they even have a large patio space should you choose to dine outside.
