The chips were soggy when I got my food. I liked the red onions, it added a little kick to the food on top of what the food offers to begin with. 6/10 Eggs over medium- not too runny how I like it. Velvety, the eggs weren't burnt crispy and was delightful. Meat was umami, savory and tender. Different than what I expected, had a little kick of spice. Beans were dry and bland. Not very impressed. 3/10 Pancakes were okay. A little dry for my taste but they were fluffy. The syrup with it was tasty. 5/10. Good food, spoiled by bad service. We have been curious about this place ever since we stopped and talked to the person seating people while we were waiting for our reservation across the street. He mentioned a pickle martini, which I ordered at lunch and was very good. My wife ordered the welcome burger and enjoyed it except for them getting the toppings wrong. Our granddaughter really liked her mac and cheese and there was a generous serving of sliced fruit. And my Jose Burger had just enough spice and was very tasty. That what's the good. So we stopped here for lunch on a Friday about 12:30 with our 3-year-old granddaughter. Our initial server barely said two words to us and we felt like we were an imposition. When we ordered my wife asked did they have Pepsi or Coke products he said we have bottles and cans of everything, so she ordered a Coke. It was Mexican Coke which is fine, but $5, and it wasn't until we noticed other people had cans of regular Coke and realized he did not give us a choice. When we ordered our burgers, again he barely said two words and did not ask us how we wanted them cooked even though the menu says cook to order. When we got them they were very rare, see the picture, which we're okay with although we would have ordered them a little more done. My wife said no onions on hers, and of course there was onions on her berger. Later we were served by a waitress who was much more friendly and we realize was probably just not there yet when we sat down, so the initial waiter didn't really care what we thought since we weren't going to be his customers at the end. Absolutely incredible. The service was amazing everyone cares about what they do multiple staff checked on us and made us feel right at home. The food was incredible the sauce was so consistent and had such deep flavor profiles starting off as a beef gravy into a deep dive peppercorn and shallot. The steak was cooked perfectly and incredibly tender. Don't forget to order a biscuit it's almost got a sourdough taste and the jam they made was such an incredible compliment that flirted with deep sweet and tart flavors absolutely worth returning for alone. The small diner feel and the fact that it was nestled in a small family neighborhood made it feel like a true hidden gem. I'll definitely be coming back. The French toast was pretty dry, it definitely needed moisture, so I'm glad I added the compote and a lot of syrup. The fries were solid, I also got the prickly pear lemonade. My only gripe is it's pricy. $18 for the Big Jim that doesn't even have an egg on it, plus a side salad that's just greens with vinaigrette, doesn't feel like a great value. I am not normally someone who writes reviews. My best friend and I came in starving after a late show at the Van Buren after I'd searched around for any places open late. The ambience was incredible and unique and our server, Allison, was the SWEETEST person ever. We both got the happy hour welcome burger and a plate of fries to share. I cannot use the language I want to here to be able to properly express how incredible our food was so I will just say that everything was off the board amazing. When we got there, there was a wait for a table inside, so we sat at the counter. This turned out to be pretty cool, because we could watch them cooking up the food. They really have it down to an art. When the cook cut my sandwich in half, some of the delicious filling squeezed out. I could have kissed him because he scooped up the wayward filling and put it right on my plate, instead of just leaving it there and wiping it away. The food here is so, so, so good. It's not light, heart healthy fare, but it doesn't matter because it is so, so, so good. I had the chicken melt, which is a chicken salad (not your typical chicken salad) on buttered, grilled Noble bread with cheese, lettuce and tomato. My son had the Big Jim, a huge piece of boneless fried chicken topped with bacon, cheese, and delicious sausage gravy sandwiched between a biscuit--a biscuit that was cut in half, buttered and grilled. Situated in the Garfield district, Welcome Diner is located within a residential neighborhood with only street parking options. Luckily we had no issues securing a spot out front. The menu has a nice array of vegetarian and meat-loving selections. We tried the fried green tomato sandwich and the Big Jim chicken sandwich with a fried egg. The fried green tomato sandwich unfortunately lacked flavor and there was barely any chipotle ranch on the bread. Even adding hot sauce couldn't resuscitate the sandwich, luckily the paired Mac n cheese was creamy and delicious. The Big Jim was doused in gravy, so no flavor lacking there! The portion was large and came with a heaping of fries. Overall the service was attentive and the restaurant has a fun vibe. I'm not ready to give up on this place just yet!
