5 stars because the chicken absolutely saved the day. The spices actually come through here. Like REALLY come through. I didn't even need hot sauce... although obviously I still used hot sauce because I believe in excess and poor decision making. The greens surprised me... sweeter and somehow creamier than what I'm used to, but honestly not creamy and decent. The slaw was solid too, also leaning a little sweet for my taste. The potato salad was decent too, just a smaller portion than I was expecting. Flavor-wise it was different from how I make mine since I lean more savory with mayo and onion, but clearly it wasn't a problem because I devoured the entire meal. Now for the comedy portion of the evening: delivery. I ordered through Yelp, which directed me to Gus's site, which routes through a third-party delivery service. I won't actually use delivery apps that require signups and accounts and seventeen forms of human surrender, so I felt like I was doing the "direct" route even though I know better. The ENTIRE reason I ordered delivery was because I wanted a drink that wasn't water from my sink. Driver arrives. Hands me one bag. Me: "And the drink?" Driver to passenger: "Babe, they didn't give you a drink?" And in that moment, as a former delivery driver myself, my soul briefly left my body because... ma'am... the order is literally visible to you. The drink is WRITTEN ON THE BAG. I almost gave an extra $5 cash tip too. Almost. BUT! and this is why Gus's still gets 5 stars, I called the restaurant and the guy who handled the situation was awesome. Kind, attentive, apologetic, immediately refunded the drink, and handled it professionally. Then I took my first bite of chicken and literally interrupted myself to say, "Okay but the food is phenomenal though." Because it was. He laughed, apologized again for the delivery issue, and said, "Hope to see you in." Yes. YES you will. Because from now on I will absolutely be eating this food the correct way: by going there myself like the universe intended. Third-party delivery chaos remains undefeated. I would absolutely destroy another plate while angrily sipping water, 1000%. read more

I LOVE this location! A coworker took me for a Belated Birthday lunch, as she knows this is one of my fave spots. We started with Fried Green Tomatoes and tried the Hush Puppies....soooo good. If you didn't know, everything is cooked fresh when ordered. The chicken is always cooked perfectly...crisp on the outside and juicy on then inside. Needed a quick bite after my flight at around 2:00ish. Ordered online and walked from the hotel- the online thing said it would be about 15 minutes but I ended up waiting about 20-25 minutes. I had asked for utensils, but they weren't included so eating the Mac and cheese was a bit hard since my hotel didn't have silverware easily accessible. I got the chicken sandwich combo which came out to a little over $15. It was a large sandwich but very small mac and cheese side. The chicken was alright but I wish there was more flavor and it was less stringy. Wasn't impressed and wouldn't try the sandwich again- but possibly a different menu item? We love Gus's! My favorite thing is the chicken sandwich. My date got an all leg plate hahaha I don't think him and I are going to last long. But he did pay so I might go on another date with him.... All of the staff were friendly and greeted us upon entering, ordering and leaving, that was nice. The place was plenty busy around 4pm on a Wednesday. Everything seemed clean. We ordered chicken sandwiches which were crispy and a little spicy, juicy and tender and no hint of processing. Loved the texture and crunch of the chicken, but the chicken was salty. The greens would have been better with meat in them (when I ordered, I was told they had bacon bits in them. But the scoop I received did not have any meat in them). The sweet tea was delicious. I wanted to try the fried okra because of not many places here serve it. But I knew I wouldn't have wrong. Melaisia was sweet, friendly, outgoing, welcoming, and very helpful! She made some recommendations and also told me the spice levels of their chicken. She also noted that if I have a peanut allergy, their chicken is fried in peanut oil. Ala Cart - Thigh: Served fresh, never frozen, natural, hormone-free chicken, and fried everything in peanut oil (4/5). Nicely fried to a golden brown. Crispy and seasoned well with a kick. Unfortunately, they can not change the spice level. Per Melaisia, "If you can handle spice, it's a level 2. If you can't handle it, it's a level 5. It's not too bad." It does not matter what location in whatever town your in they have the friendliest and attentive staff.
