Probably not going back to Dick's... We were visiting both Phoenix and Scottsdale with friends and decided to meet up at Dick's Hideaway for dinner after hearing good things. There were six of us, and we were quoted a 45-minute wait, which seemed reasonable at first. However, their system for managing waits is honestly pretty frustrating. There are no reservations, no text notifications, and no call when your table is ready. You're basically left hovering and guessing. We did make it back in time for our table, but a simple "hey, your table's ready" system would go a long way in making guests feel valued. We were seated around 8 PM after waiting and taken to a large corner booth in the back. Unfortunately, there were still two people from the previous party lingering at the table even after they had paid and the rest of their group had already left. I understand finishing drinks, but it felt inconsiderate given how busy the restaurant was and how long people were waiting. After being seated, it took about 15 minutes before anyone came to our table, and even then, not everyone in our group was acknowledged right away. Things didn't improve much from there. It took over 30 minutes just to place our food order. From what we could tell, there was only one server handling the entire restaurant. I can definitely empathize with how difficult that must be, but at the same time, when we first arrived, she appeared to be standing near the entrance rather than actively managing tables, which added to the confusion. When the food finally came out, it was very staggered instead of arriving together. I ordered the Taos tenderloin with green beans and fries. The sides were actually great--probably the highlight of the meal--but the steak itself was disappointing. I ordered it medium, but it came out with an overly charred, almost burnt crust that completely overpowered the flavor. The whole dish really needed basic seasoning like salt and pepper to bring it together. The atmosphere also didn't do much to help the experience. It's extremely dark inside--so much so that it's hard to see your food--and the space feels cramped. The layout is also pretty strange and honestly a bit off-putting. There's what appears to be a kitchen area right behind the bar, and then a full kitchen in the back--but what really stood out was the lack of separation near the restroom area. There's no proper door between the kitchen and the bathroom space, and from a small step down off the dining area, you can basically see straight into the kitchen if you wanted to. It just didn't feel very private or well thought out. Another thing that stood out was the portion sizes. While some people might see that as a positive, they were honestly too large--especially for those of us traveling who couldn't take leftovers with us. Slightly smaller portions might not only reduce waste but also help the kitchen keep up with demand and improve overall service speed. Overall, this ended up being more of a one-time experience than a place we'd return to. Between the disorganized wait system, slow and inconsistent service, and underwhelming food, it just didn't live up to the expectations we had going in. read more

Need a break from the desert sun? The cool, dark, quiet environment is perfect to escape. The staff was outstanding proving great service and excellent recommendations. I recommend stopping in for an expresso martini or bartenders drink of choice. While the rice, beans, salsa, and hot sauce were incredible, the beef and pork was a bit overcooked and the lack of vegetables can make the meal dense and difficult. However I still recommend and look forward to trying other parts of their menu in the future. read more

I can't say enough good things about this restaurant! I've been coming for years and it is never disappointed me! I asked for a spicy margarita and it was on point. I hate when you ask for a spicy margarita and it's not spicy! Well, this spicy margarita tickled the back of my throat, which is what a spicy margarita is supposed to do! We really love this place and have been coming here for years. This visit we arrived around 5 pm Saturday night ready to enjoy a quiet evening in the back at Dick's. We ordered our drinks and bacon wrapped jalapeños and we were good. Then a child comes in with parents asking about the child's menu ( $72 tomahawk) and is that real haha wink wink. They're speaking very loudly like they're the only people there and then romper room arrived: Car seat, blankets, baby, child and 4 or 5 adults who clearly thought they were the only ones in the place. Rude behavior and extremely disruptive but the manager and server were very apologetic. They bought us a round of drinks but I'm thinking Richardson's/R is a better bet if you want a break from the kids. This wasn't the experience we come here for. read more

Many restaurants struggled during COVID and Dicks was one of them. Last night's HH visit showed us that they have returned to greatness. Our service was fantastic and the food was executed perfectly. Lunchtime with my wife and daughter for the first time. We over ordered as we wanted to try a bunch of things. Our favorites were the Hatch Chili Burger, Onion Rings and the Queso Dip. The Bacon wrapped jalapeños were very spicy. We like spicy but this was too much. The food was great overall and we will be back....but the service was spotty. Let me say everyone was very nice but we had to be seated in the room without the bar and our drinks went dry and I had to hunt someone down. Had to hunt someone down again to pay the bill. Came here for dinner expecting a casual hole-in-the-wall kind of spot, but it actually turned out to have quite a cozy, romantic vibe. The server warned us that the draft beer wasn't cold (which was a bit disappointing), so I went with a Cab Sav instead -- surprisingly good choice. The menu is huge, so it took a bit to decide. They also have daily specials -- we tried the fish tacos. The portions are massive, but don't expect to share unless you want to pay an extra $10 "sharing plate" fee, which feels pretty ridiculous. When the food came, it looked impressive, but it was mostly rice, beans, and tortillas -- not much actual meat. The server also pretty much disappeared after dropping the plates. Wow. Portion was absolutely absurd. This would be an amazing post hike meal- it seemed a little pricey on the face but when I got it, I understood., 3 eggs, beans, shredded potatoes, pork adovada (pork stewed in a red chili sauce) and a tortilla. Overall I thought this dish was fantastic. Hearty, filling, you might not finish it unless you're a bottomless pit like myself, and the chili sauce was very tasty. Earthy spicy, complex, I only wish the dish brought a touch of acidity into it. Maybe you could get some lime wedges on the side. Aside from that, I didn't think the tortilla was additive, that's the only part of my plate I didn't finish. I had beans and potatoes, I didn't also need a tortilla. Overall it was pretty timely considering it was a full house, servers were attentive and polite. Very positive experience. If you have an appetite, I highly recommend it. Super interesting vibe that was very unexpected! It's settled into a strip mall and when you open the door it's a dark but inviting spot with bar seats, tables and a room with more tables off the bar! The menu has a ton of great choices with lots of New Mexico vibes and flavors. I had the burrito with chicken and 1/2 red and 1/2 green chili sauce on top. The portions are HUGE. The burrito took up the entire plate but was nestled on top of rice and beans. Super smoky, grilled flavors and a huge portion to take home. Okay, one of my favorite restaurants in the country. Austin at the bar is always the best!! I'm sad the SW sirloin steak wasn't on the specials menu tonight. It should be on the permanent menu! The strangest part of the night was the new manager Bill. I had a seat near the door and I felt like he was breathing over my shoulder all night. Myself and some other patrons felt he was a poor addition to the normal feel of the restaurant. He was almost hyper, sweaty and almost aggressive when he moved around the place. The cocktails were not what I was expecting - we ordered prickly pear margaritas and they came in the normal plastic water glasses which was larger and less esthetic than I expected, they were tasty though. For an appetizer we ordered the queso which was really good! There are large chunks of onions and green chilis that I wished were a little more finely cut up. For our meals, we ordered the New Mexico Enchiladas and Carne Adovada. Both were sooo good! I would definitely come back and try other things on the menu! read more

I wanted to like it- I was amped to try it- but the reality of our experience fell very short of our hopeful expectations- Visiting the area for vacation, I discovered Dick's Hideaway, via a foodie suggestion on where to find xmas chili dishes! We arrived Tuesday late afternoon, specifically for the brunch menu. We were seated in the back room, which was dimly lit, seemingly for ambiance, but was way far to dim- we had to use our phone flashlights to really look at the menu- Our waiter asked about drinks, but coming post hike we really just wanted waters- waters were brought quickly, but the we didn't see our waiter again for 15mins- no water refill, no food order, just waiting in the dark-(i noticed because I was charging my phone & checking charge levels occasionally) Also, while waiting to order, it was a bit disturbing to realize our seats were next to the only bathroom, which was also located through the kitchen- my husband joked, "I feel like that has to offend some code" Once we finally ordered, I opted for the Chili Relleno & my husband the Richard's combo- while ordering I attempted to ask the waiter about the xmas chili & jalapeno hashbrowns over plain, but he was too quick to leave- though we noticed our order took awhile to get anywhere because as it was hand written, our waiter stopped in the hallway to talk to another staff member & was there for about 7mins- Eventually the food came, well my husband's did- the waiter brought his PIPING HOT METAL PLATE out, put it in front of my husband, with no warning 'hot plate', & my husband had to find out the hard way But my food never came- after the other long waits, I decided to glance at the time, 3:44pm- my husband sat there politely waiting for my food to come- I kept telling him eat while it's hot, but 14minutes later my plate came out- different looking design, no warning, I also found out it was a very piping hot plate- I had asked for chili relleno- one duck & asked what the waiter suggested pork or smoked turkey- he said pork- and then discovered apparently the waiter was so pro-pork that both of my rellenos were stuffed with pork- the relleno itself was awful; I'd say 80% breading, tiny pepper, barely any meat or cheese inside- hashbrowns & beans were scalding hot- I ended up taking them to go because with the plate they were on they weren't cooling down & we had already been there a long time- Hubby's expensive platter didn't match the description; jalapeno benedict, 2 chicken enchiladas, asparagus- he was served chicken in flour tortilla & ham on English muffin (no jalapeno)- Excited for the xmas chili- we both got just green & had to ask for a side of red, that came cold- didn't blend well- Everything overall, for the higher price points were very underwhelming in flavor boldness- needed salt, needed zest, had no profile- Would highly NOT recommend- And at this point, yes you're correct to guess getting boxes & paying took quite a while as well- read more

I visited Dick's Hideaway for a late-ish lunch on a weekday. Like everyone says, it's difficult to find. Fortunately, I did my research prior and knew to look for Luci's. There's a few parking spots right up front and more behind the building. I arrived late, and my friend was already seated. The space is small but cozy. Starving, we ordered right away. Our server was very helpful and guided us through the menu. I went with the New Mexico Enchiladas--two shrimp and one veggie--served with rice and beans, and I chose both red and green sauce. The food arrived quickly and piping hot. The enchiladas were delicious! Maybe it was my hunger, but they really hit the spot. While the veggie enchilada was good, the shrimp ones were even better, and I'd definitely order them again. My friend loved her dish too. Service was fast and friendly. I've been coming here for years (somewhere around 20). It is a staple in this area. I usually swing by for happy hour when I want to wind down and am in the mood for a margarita. I almost always get the queso, which the best I've had. Spinach, green chili, onion, topped with chorizo. Delicious. I used to regularly get the bacon wrapped shrimp before I developed a shellfish allergy. Boy I miss those. Today's visit was pleasant as always. It is small intimate area and people are friendly and happy. The staff is attentive and know their stuff. Cooks, bartenders, waitstaff. The food comes out fast and it's fun to watch them work in the open kitchen from the bar seats. Definitely recommend this for a casual upscale New Mexican dining experience. I was excited to try this place because I've been to one of their other restaurants and loved it however this was a miss for me. I'm in my 30s and felt like walking inside was a hazard, super dark and the seating is weird if you wanna have conversation. I get that the concept is different but it just didn't fit my preference. As for the food, I felt we waited for a while to get our food after we ordered, we came on a Sunday around 10ish. I got the green chile pork. The plate looked huge but there wasn't much pork in it. Went for breakfast/brunch and it was a very unique vibe for that, being that it was small, cozy, dark, and lit with candles. We chose to sit in the back part, away from the more hopping bar-area and we liked that a lot because there was only one other party back there. The onion rings were a real treat and I'm not even a big onion-ring fan. The batter was so flavorful, almost like the onions were wrapped in fried dough. Yum! The carne adovada was highly recommended so I tried it. Someone else in our party raved about it, but it wasn't my favorite. Just didn't love the overpowering red chile sauce smothering the whole dish. And the eggs/beans/pork/red sauce just wasn't working for me. Just a personal preference. Loved the tortilla though! This is a favorite of my Wife and I and we're regulars here for 30 years. The restaurant is located in a fun foodie location on the N/W corner of 16st & Bethany Home. Parking can be a challenge but adjacent business parking is available. If you've never been here you could walk past it easily. Enter from the East side of the strip mall and a door takes you below ground into a dark atmosphere with a copper bar on one side were you can eat and watch them cook, and a small but curiously cozy dining area of maybe five tables and one large dining table which is shared. We always preferred this table, it's a great way to meet people a chat over a meal. Food Admittedly we have never been in for breakfast and lunch or dinner have stuck to our go to; Carne Adovada. This delicious smoke pork dish is their claim to fame signature dish. Smoked all day its smoke tantalizes the neighborhood. We lived nearby and were teased with its aroma lol. It's served pulled with beans, rice and a delicious Smokey red chili sauce reminiscent of Chipotle. It's a fun place to experience and without doubt the #1 place for Carne Adovada! Don't waste your time. Our party of four came in for an early dinner after seeing The Six play at ASU on Sunday. Three people at the bar and one party at a table with lots of candles lighting creating a beautiful, calm, welcoming venue. The experience fell apart when we waited 35 mins to order. The lead waiter was as disengaged as they get. "Oh, I thought my team was taking care of you." Then we waited another 25 mins to get our credit card back. Dick's Hideaway has been on my list for quite some time! I finally got to make it happen and checked it out for a late lunch while in the area. As the names suggests, with no major signs or markers, Dick's Hideaway, is well, hidden away! Next to Luci's with a small sign at the bottom of the door that says, "Sorry, we are open", the entrance is unassuming, but does have their menus posted on the outside to let you know you are in fact, in the right place. Honestly, already off to an awesome start. The inside is dark and the initial bar area is quite small, they do have a few other sections of the restaurant, so I am not sure how big it actually is, but we sat at one of the high tops in the bar area, near the entrance. Right off the bat, service was very friendly, promptly took our beverage orders. We stuck with cold brew this time around, which was simple enough and smooth! I was torn with the menu, as everything sounded delicious They are known for their New-Mexican inspired cuisine and their brunch, which they serve until 4:00 pm. I was torn between Richards Special, which is two chicken enchiladas with a jalapeno hollandaise sauce benny with asparagus or the meatloaf benny special, The server let me know he could swap the bennys out and all my dreams came true. Portions were generous, food was super flavorful and overall, it was a great experience. Dick's Hideaway is one of the few places in town that's still nice to dine at when they're busy because the energy of the place when they're jam-packed with patrons doesn't become obnoxious. All of the staff are down-to-earth and genuinely friendly. Great place to watch a game, too. read more

This is one of the places that I miss most in Phoenix. My friend introduced me to this (literally) hidden gem on 16th & Bethany. There are no signs for it, it's tucked between some other businesses in the plaza, and if you didn't know where you were going...you wouldn't know where you were going. That being said, once I found out about this place, I frequented it very often, I would have gone daily if my budget and belly had been able to afford it! It's super small and dark, but cozy and inviting at the same time. There were times we waited, especially during peak hours, but it was always worth it. Service was always top notch - whether we sat at the bar or were in one of the corner tables. And the food and drink were just...amazing. Everything from a simple mimosa or bloody to a craft cocktail was just delicious. And their food...heavenly, divine, out of this world. They had the best bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers; I can't order those anywhere without nearly guaranteed disappointment compared to this place. As far as entrees, I don't think I ever had anything I didn't absolutely love, but carne adovada was probably among the best. I also had their seafood linguine, pasta heidi, and quesadilla. A friend and I were baiting the area, and were recommended this spot by a local friend. It felt like a speakeasy because it was a bit of a challenge to find after dark, but that added to the cool effect. They have two happy hour slots, 3-6 and 9-close. We made the second slot. It's quite dark inside, but it's a totally vibe, whether just catching up as friends or on a date. The bartender was a bit cheeky, full of wit and personality. I couldn't choose between the prickly pear marg or the spicy marg and I asked the bartender which one he recommended, and he said I didn't have to choose, he could make me a spicy prickly pear margarita (hello!!) and it was a FANTASTIC, tall, and pink drink. Loved it. The kitchen is behind/next to the bar so you can watch your drinks and plates as they are made. Food is a bit pricey and it was quite late so my friend and I split the carne asada cheese fries and I'm so glad we did. The food is pricey but the portions are HUGE, and it tastes great so the pricing makes sense. We could barely finish the plate. It came out piping hot on cast iron. So good.
