And 3 to-go containers costs $2.10, for which they didn't bother telling us it was an extra charge. The server didn't bother to check on us once. We live on island and am appalled by this place. I do admit that this place does make me feel satisfied and fulfilled for a pho meal however. I should have read my own review before letting my stomach decide where we were going to have breakfast. I've wanted BBH and that's what I ordered. Not crowded at 9:30 in the morning so prime parking I'm lucky was my first thought. I'm stupid was my exiting thought. I ordered and received my BunBoHue. At first glance and taste I thought it was okay. Then pushing aside the chili oil there were no blood cubes, first problem. Veggies which arrived with delivery of soup....no basil(?) asked but was told delivery not arrived yet (second problem) so just mint leaves and bean sprouts with a seed laden slice of lemon and two thin slices of jalapeño. This was not the hearty bowl of yum I have at other places. It wasn't even close. I ate everything, left the bland broth and asked for my check. $22 of tasteless soup and the kicker was the check "recommended" a $4.40 tip. Maybe the check should taste the soup. Please explain why I should leave a 20% tip for someone who took my order, delivered same order and then dropped the check? I might have but when I put $30 on the check and he brought back a $5 and a $1 for change I almost got up leaving that $1 there. I had to ask for change for that $5 because I wasn't leaving a $5 tip for the service. I wont be back, I'll drive a few more blocks for something more satisfying and less annoying. I have had pho many many times in my lifetime and being in Hawaii there isn't many Vietnamese restaurants that you can really go to considering the three stars that I've given the price point is just way too high for whatever it really is. It's just pho . It's mediocre but it does hit the spot when you need it mediocre is not a bad thing. It's just something that's average and it's an average bowl when you're craving it. My friend and I went here today for a late lunch on our way to Ala Moana. We were seated in a corner behind two ladies who were nearing the end of their meal. The restaurant wasn't busy when we arrived, yet people who came in after us were served before our order was taken. My friend had enough time to use the bathroom before anyone approached our table. Only after my friend made eye contact with the server who was two tables down with two ladies (who had come in after us yet had their order taken and their food served before we had our order taken) did anyone come to help us. When the server approached us he was curt and short with us. We should have left but we were hungry. We placed our order for two phos, an appetizer and two drinks. The food arrived quickly which was the only positive thing about the meal. The tables around us were attended to but no one checked on us. We had to start gathering our belongings before the sever came over with the check. The entire time we were here we felt unwelcome and uncomfortable due to the attitudes of the staff. We have been here a number of times over the years and this will be our last. The food used to be really good but the last couple of times has been disappointing especially for such a high price. I've recently had lunch here twice now, got the same thing both times, pho with beef and tendon and both times it was delicious. The second time I brought to of my colleagues with me and they enjoyed it too. Parking isn't an issue even though they are sharing the lot with a bank and another restaurant, there are reserved stalls right in front for the restaurant and if those are all taken, there are other non-reserved stalls for you to choose from. Finding a parking a stall has never been an issue for me. Once you walk in, you are greeted by the friendly professional staff and are seated promptly. Sat down and once you are ready the staff is ready to take your order. Like I said I ordered a pho with rare beef and tendon, on my first visit, it was the first time I tried tendon and it was awesome. So awesome I came back a second time and ordered it again. You get the usual veggies (jalapeños, sprouts, basil and lemon) the tendon is nice chunks that hold up well in the hot broth. Other places I've been, instead of chunks of tendon it was sliced which broke down a lot faster in the hot broth. Here at Pho Saigon, they are doing it good. The chunks are simmered long enough to make it nice and soft, not overly chewy but just chewy enough to make it enjoyable. I told the staff member that I enjoyed the tendon and he was telling me that when they first put tendon on the menu, they made it like it would be made back home, which is tougher, they wouldn't simmer it as long as they are doing it now and this was an adjustment they made for the customers. I like when restaurants take the time to listen to their customers and make changes when they think it would be best and in this case, I think it was a good change. Sometimes, restaurants make a knee jerk reaction to a "bad" review and it ruins the dish or worse, ruins the place. Made a last minute decision to eat here for dinner, and it did not disappoint. From the time you walk in until the moment you leave, you'll receive nothing but great service. The host couldn't have been nicer and checked in on our table from time to time. We also had two other employees stop by our table--one brought our waters and told us that our server would be with us shortly, which was much appreciated, and then our server came by and to take our order. The food was amazing, not to mention very generous. We ordered a grilled pork roll, 2 bun with grilled pork and spring rolls, and pho. When the food came, we were shocked at the amount of food--we ended up bringing the rest home because we could hardly make a dent in the food lol. Honestly, I think the portions are worth the price. Heck, we got at least 2 more meals out of our leftovers! Just a heads up though, they do charge you for the take-out containers. It's not much (~$1.40,) but just don't be surprised when you see an extra charge on the bill. Parking is pretty good too - they have their own reserved parking spaces right outside the restaurant. Now to the food: the pho was good, especially the quality of the meat used. The broth was okay. Spring rolls were huge and delicious! Perfectly crispy and filling. Lettuce, mint, and all sides were fresh and crisp. The dipping sauce was really flavorful and I loved that they use the size ramekins they use because I like to put 2 of the rolls in there to soak before eating. As huge as each roll was, 2 fit in there with room to spare. Service was fast, smooth, and friendly. They were pretty attentive with drink refills and checking to see if we needed anything. Been a fan of this restaurant for years. I'm a little surprised that I have not written a review of this sooner. The pho here pretty decent. The broth brings a good amount of flavor with the right portion of rice noodles and your selected protein. My usual go to pho is the seafood pho which includes: shrimp, fish cake, and calamari. I did notice on my most recent venture that they no longer include fish cake balls and the price of the pho was a little higher than before. As a matter of fact, this restaurant may be a little pricier than other Vietnamese restaurants out there. The leafy veggies that are brought to your table for you to add in the pho are quite fresh as they just were plucked out from the bushels. In addition to pho, I usually order spring rolls as a starter. They're quite filling and also quite savory. Word to wise though: don't eat it right away, give it some time to cool off before you pop that sucker in your mouth. I ate pho tandem for $19 at Saigon Pho restaurant, which seemed a lot compared to some of the other Vietnamese restaurants in Chinatown. However, the Vietnamese restaurants in Chinatown have small, medium, and large pho. But, there is only one size at Saigon Pho restaurant and that is large only and they do give a lot. I was barely able to finish my bowl of pho noodle soup and it was good. I think that each of the servers came by to check on us, take our order, answer questions, and make suggestions! I got the special vermicelli with Shrimp Paste and Grilled Pork Patty. Our server encouraged us to try the Grilled Pork Patty since we both had never had it before. It's a flavorful sausage-like meat. It's on the slightly sweet side and is more tender than a regular grilled piece of pork would be. Hawaii has more Vietnamese speakers than a Saigon street corner, yet finding good Vietnamese food here is like finding affordable housing - nearly impossible. Pho Saigon used to be my ride-or-die spot with consistently great quality and service. Then they hit me with a $30 rice plate. THIRTY. DOLLARS. For rice with stuff on it. Look, it's delicious rice with stuff on it, but Vietnamese food isn't supposed to require a credit check. This is comfort food, not fine dining! Somewhere, my Vietnamese auntie is rolling her eyes so hard she can see her own brain. Vietnamese cuisine should be like a warm hug from family - affordable, filling, and made with love (and MSG). Not something that makes my wallet file for bankruptcy. So after years of loyal pho slurping, I have to say the words no foodie wants to say: "Sorry Pho Saigon... I'm gone."
