I had been looking forward to eating here for months before I finally visited. I am pleased to report tasty food, great service from friendly servers, a clean bathroom, and walls brimming with beautiful paintings with scenes of Vietnam. Upon stepping foot in Phở Quê Hương, I was transported back to Vietnam (or Orange County, California-- have your pick). Phở Quê Hương is located in Honolulu's Chinatown, so we get an interesting demographic mix of diners. (I believe I observed at least one Hoa family order in Vietnamese and then converse in a Chinese language.) I wasn't so attentive to the precise linguistic profiles of my fellow diners because of how distracted I was by the food. However, it is a salient pattern I am observing in Honolulu: seeing many non-Viet people coming to eat Viet food. I know Vietnamese cuisine has become more globally mainstream, but I suppose I am so used to existing in Vietnamese ethnic enclaves. The menu offers a great selection of Vietnamese food, including dishes I had never had before. The bún chả Đà Nẵng is not at all similar to a bún chả Hà Nội, so don't get them mixed up! Bún chả Đà Nẵng was more like a bún riêu without the riêu: a nice tomato soup with a serious umami flavor going on. (I was getting notes of cheese even, in a really good way.) My first time having a non-vegetarian bò lá lốt was here. It was tasty, although I was getting a spicy note that I wasn't sure where it was coming from. The tràng đặc biệt was delicious and familiar. I always love wrapping things (amateurishly) with rice paper. The name "Phở Quê Hương" is apt, but it isn't just phở but rather all the dishes that feel like they arrived straight from Vietnam. I have been living in Hawaii for five years and have eaten at this restaurant countless times. But after today, I am utterly disgusted and will never step foot in this place again. Your service is absolute garbage. This morning, I called to place an order. I initially tried using Vietnamese to order two PDBs, but the woman who answered couldn't understand me. I switched to English and asked for two "Pho Combinations." She understood that, took the order, and told me it would be ready in 10 minutes. I also wanted to order Quẩy, so I asked, "Can I get one Quẩy?" Again, she didn't understand. So I clarified in English: "Add one Chinese doughnut." Guess what her response was? She condescendingly told me, "This is a Vietnamese restaurant, not a Chinese restaurant." What the hell is your problem? On your very own menu, that item is literally listed as a "Chinese doughnut." As a server, you don't even know your own restaurant's menu, yet you have the audacity to respond to a customer with such an arrogant, rude, and racially discriminatory attitude. It's disgusting. Everyone knows you are a Vietnamese restaurant. But Quẩy is widely known as a Chinese doughnut, and that is exactly how it is written on your menu. Learn your own menu. To make matters worse, when I arrived 20 minutes later, the front desk told me my phone order hadn't even been made yet and that I had to wait. What on earth was the point of me calling ahead? It's a complete joke. If you are going to be this arrogant and rude, and if you hate Chinese culture so much, why is your restaurant located in Chinatown? Why don't you move to a Vietnamese neighborhood? This is Chinatown. This restaurant has incredibly low-quality staff and a glaring issue with discrimination. It is absurd that an employee can work here without even knowing the menu. To openly disrespect and discriminate against Chinese customers--when you are located in Chinatown and 80% of your repeat customers are Chinese--is pathetic. Take your business elsewhere. read more

I could've sworn I reviewed Pho Que Huong before, but guess not. This is my favorite pho shop on-island thus far. This place is constantly busy, and for good reason. The food is unbelievable! Sometimes there's a line out the door, but the team is efficient--so always wait! This location is in Chinatown on Maunakea. If you're lucky, you can snag a metered parking spot nearby. Pho Que Huong is super clean, and I love how they decorate for holidays. Family-owned, this local business is very welcoming. Plenty of tables. Clean restrooms for paying customers. The food and drink are made with utmost care. The produce is always fresh and clean. The pho broth is unmatched. Not too sweet, lovely and aromatic. Portions are generous for the price point. Vietnamese coffee is a must! Strong and sweet--yum! The spring rolls even taste "healthy" here in that they're not too oily, and made with fresh ingredients. The customer service is always on-point, whether eating in or taking out. Note: They do not offer XL size for takeout. I asked my coworker who's a Vietnamese chef, that when she's tired of cooking all day, but wants to eat good Vietnamese food, where would she go? And her answer was this place and it did not disappoint! Located where the old Rice Paper and Pho My Lan used to be in Chinatown. Dining tables and chairs that can be combined for bigger or smaller parties alike. Note that it may be a little tight in some aisle ways, when maneuvering through. The service here is quick and efficient. And even though they can get really busy at times, they're still cranking out the food and beverages in a timely manner. As for the food, it's definitely comforting and delicious. The different pho broths (chicken, beef, etc) are all just right, not too oily, not too salty. I didn't even have to add in any condiments to enhance the flavor. The Banh Xeo is a huge portion, that can be shared amongst a party of 2-4. Street parking is located right out front, there's also a parking structure out back, with an entrance into the establishment directly from the parking structure. I haven't braved any yet, but you know this is a legit place if it has goat dishes on the menu. We've tried many different dishes and each one has been delicious! The ingredients are so fresh, especially the veggies. The rare beef salad and steamed duck salads were yummy. I've never had steamed duck before, and the meat was very tender and not as oily as the roasted style. Their pho is top notch, as well as the dry noodle fried with sauce meats served with broth on the side. The banh xeo (rice crepe) was immense, must have been about 1.5 ft in diameter! It was so huge it was served on a platter, along with lettuce and veggies. It was also nice and crispy on the edges, filled with the usual pork and bean sprouts. So far this place ranks in my top 2 Vietnamese restaurants that I've tried on Oahu. I think I messed up. I really wanted pho, but I didn't explore the menu pasted the first couple of pages. I wanted the spicy beef soup but I didn't care for what else was in it. So my dumb safe self ordered the won ton min. Asked if it could be spicy and the man said yes, but it came out regular. Ok, then my dumb self realized why one of my friends put siracha in his pho. And that's what I did and it was perfect! However, I should've looked through the menu more because the other customers coming in were ordering pho and I feel like I really missed out. Dangerous Raw Beef Caused Severe Food Poisoning!!!! I'm a returning customer who has ordered takeout here 5 times before. I always order the same thing which is the combination, I brought my pho home in 5 minutes and ate right away, but the raw beef leached massive amounts of blood and turned the whole broth red. I took a sip but through sway the rest instead. That turned out to be a huge mistake. By last night, I developed a severe case of acute food poisoning with violent diarrhea, nausea, and intense body aches. I have been completely bedridden and only just started to recover today. To confirm, my friend had the chicken Pho from the same order and they are completely fine. Since the only difference was the raw beef and the lukewarm broth, there is no doubt that the contamination came from their beef. Food safety is a non-negotiable standard. Look, we only ordered 2 pho and their chicken with fish sauce but still..... we both ordered combination pho with different choices. I ordered a large and my friend ordered the regular. I was ready to eat when my friend said, "hey, check your bowl because I ordered tripe". I looked and YEP a curly piece of tripe was staring me in the face. OK no problem. We traded bowls. Super tasty food, we're introducing new people to this restaurant every other week lol! The newbie picked won tun??? And the soup was delish! Returnees tried the appetizers: the Lup cheong/egg roll, (envision a summer wrap with different ingredients), and I ordered the bbq chicken summer roll. Alas, they brought the grilled pork version instead of the chicken, and were apologetically going to take it back. (Being a nice guest, I said I'm sure it's good like everything else you serve, but if I don't like it, can I get my original order?). Of course I thought it was tasty, so of course I ate the whole thing;)! We all ordered dessert-one ordered the coconut jello jelly cup and the rest of us had to try the three bean dessert. All were refreshing, and the three bean is filling, so plan accordingly;). Pho Que Huang never disappoints! My 2nd visit to this Chinatown treasure in downtown Honolulu. Best pho I ever had! You can choose the size of your bowl, medium all the way to XL! You can choose from chicken, to steak, brisket, tendons or if you're vegan, opt for Tofu and Vegetable pho which my friend got. They give you a generous portion of bean sprouts, lemon, jalapeño slices, Thai basil and use hoisin sauce and Thai chili or garlic oil to spice it up a bit! I always add black pepper too for the extra kick for my sinus. The crispy spring rolls is a must. Roll it in fresh lettuce, pickled carrot and daikon and mint and dip in the Thai chili sauce! I got Freshly squeezed orange juice and for dessert, I got my yummy coconut jello molded as a rose and my friends enjoyed the tapioca and flan! Came back again cause the in laws wanted some pho. They enjoyed their pho. I hardly ever crave pho so I got me some bun rieu. I'd say very solid. First impression is I could smell the crab paste. Different than what my mom makes but pretty good once I added all the different veggies they provided and a squeeze of lemon. I eat mine with some nuoc mam and it hit the spot. My only complaint is the huyet. It had a weird texture this time like more grainy. Not sure what that means but I decided to not eat that. The fish sauce chicken wings were not bad. Possibly the most authentic Vietnamese restaurant I've tried so far, in my humble opinion. Located in the heart of Chinatown and open at 8am (Vietnamese for breakfast?! Sure why not!) We decided to try this spot because they serve Banh Cuon (available weekends only) We also ordered grilled pork patty rolls, Vietnamese crepe and a Vietnamese iced coffee. Everything was perfect. Always wanted to try this place out, especially when local youtubers rave about it. Lots of seats and there's a back door that leads to the back parking lot. They have a refrigerator where you can buy drinks and Vietnamese desserts. We'll have to try next time. They have the sauces on the table, ready to be put in your pho yum. This is my favorite Vietnamese place on the island. I came with my old assistant who was born and raised in Vietnam and she told me it was legit. I also went with a group of other Vietnamese people. I really like to come with a group so I can get the platter where you make your own summer rolls with whatever toppings/fillings you want in there. Although my wrapping skills are terrible, this is definitely my favorite dish of any Vietnamese restaurant. The grilled pork is my favorite although all of the things that you can put in there are good. The banh xeo is good too but it's not my favorite thing there. I have also gotten the pho a few times and the bean sprouts/basil leaves are quite generous. I do like their broth. The only downside is that it's hard to flag anyone down to refill your water. They are usually always busy so it's hard to get anyone to help you with water or anything else you might need. I usually park in the Chinatown garage since there's no dedicated parking as it is with most Chinatown restaurants. I enjoy coming here despite the parking and the water situation. We came here on a Saturday night close to 7pm, on a whim. Basically found street parking and it was one of the first restaurants we saw. Even though we went up and down a couple of streets, we headed back to this one as it was packed so we knew it must be good. Looking around at other tables, everyone seemed very pleased with their meal and are very generous in portions. The lotus salad had just the right amount of tang and was full of lotus. I was pleasantly surprised and would definitely order it again. The vegetarian spring rolls were cooked to perfection and they gave you a generous amount of garnishes. No soggy middle! I ordered the vegetarian phõ and that also was generous in size despite my poor picture taking. I only ate half and took the rest home. The broth is very light so I did have to add some condiments that were on the table. However they are very generous with the different types of vegetables that they put in there which I was also surprised with. The Mr. had an XL combo phõ and barely finished it. It was such an abundance. I didn't eat the chicken wings since I'm pescatarian but I was told they were good. We took a decent amount of leftovers home for the kid. I would definitely come back here again but would need to share my entrée as they do give generous portions. We went this Pho place in Chinatown for a quick lunch with relatives. The crispy noodle with seafood (extra $1 vice chicken or pork) was rather delicious! It was top with flowery cut squids, medium sized shrimps, a few slices of deep fried fish cake over succulent seafood and vegetables sauce. Vermicelli pho soup was another dish that would call for more. They also serve many flavor boba drinks and freshly cut and squeezed sugarcane Service was quick & friendly. Dine-in room was a bit crowded and noise level was bearable dB level when we were there at lunch time on Friday afternoon. Price wise, I was told that it was average. Compared to California, it may be a bit above average. But the delicious taste would make it justifiable to dine in or take out. Inside it feels like any other pho restaurant, decently large dining area and your typical sauces on the table. Once you start eating you quickly realize why this place is often busy.
