I'd love to say that Thuong An Lac is very true to its name of everlasting happiness and love. Everything is made with love and intention and I left feeling very good afterwards. Chinatown has a lot of crime and homeless in the area so I would firstly recommend to go when the market is busy! 7am-12pm is a sweet spot where the food, produce and everything in the area comes alive. I'm Vietnamese and it was a very affirming and comforting experience for me when so many other Vietnamese folks came first thing in the morning to get their grub at Thuong An Lac. That's when you know you've found THE spot. Major Recommendations: -Viet Iced Coffee (prob the best you'll find on island easily) -Beef Stew + Baguette (so HEARTY. I've had both vegan and non vegan beef stews and it's spot on) We loved everything we got there. The water they serve you has pandan in it and tastes very very good. I still think about it!! There's so much love squeezed into everything they have there. They also sell a lot of snacks that they make and it's honestly FIRE as well. A lot of customers came in for the snacks too. Parking: There's a lot of nearby parking ranging from $2-6. A lot of people opt for the Chinatown municipal parking. It'll be a bit of a walk so plan accordingly. If you're looking for vegan pho in Hawaii, this is the place to go. There aren't many vegan pho spots on the island, and this is easily the best I've had. It's tucked away in the entrance of Chinatown Market, making it a true hidden gem. My favorite is the "beef" noodle soup. The broth is incredibly rich and flavorful--you'd never guess it's completely vegan. I also highly recommend the taro spring rolls, which are crispy, delicious, and the perfect appetizer. Portion to price is super fair. We split this and was still both full. Noodle soup was ok tofu was lacking flavor broth could use a bit more salt or flavoring but after making my chili mix dip it was better. Few mix veggies and bamboo shoots in there. King and Kekaulike, in the building across from Oahu Market: 135 N King St, 2A. Enter the main building door, then look right. Service is friendly and efficient. Our server kept the refreshing complimentary iced tea flowing throughout our meal. The tea was delicious, yet like nothing I'd ever tasted before.: jasmine green tea was the base, but with an additional depth that seemed oddly familiar, yet I couldn't place at first: grassy, vanilla-like... Then it hit me: pandan. I'd never had it in tea before. I asked the server, and he was super-surprised that I'd figured out the combination. My cousin and I ordered the Rice Noodle with Spicy Beef Soup, the Duck Noodle Soup with Bamboo Shoots, Summer Rolls, and I think they gave us an appetizer of beancurd skin garnished with crispy shallots. Excellent! I was pleasantly impressed with this tiny hole in the wall in the heart of Chinatown. I ordered the Haianese chicken and spring rolls. The spring rolls were light and crispy accompanied by the usual lettuce, basil, mint, and noodles...the best part was the nuoc nam which wasn't too sweet. Just the most amazing vegan Vietnamese food there is on the island! I often frequent the Westminster Garden grove area in California where Vietnamese food is aplenty, including vegan options. This place would compete with those over there. You got plenty to choose from even with picky eaters so you're going to find something for everyone here IMO. We opted for the pho noodle soup and the dry hu tieu which is like a noodle dish with side soup. Flavors were amazing and were only enhanced with their house made lemongrass oil which you can self serve. The place is a bit small but we were lucky to get seated immediately on a Friday lunch. Would love to come back here over and over on my trip, but may have to make decisions since there's so much food to try! The restaurant is a peaceful serene like place and has that Chinatown like theme, showing maybe the age of the place so don't expect modern classy vibes. Also there may be a bit of a language barrier so if you can speak even a little Vietnamese, maybe try pulling it out. Otherwise, just point to the dish on the menu to order! We came here on a rainy day. Right away, a woman greeted us and clarified that their restaurant is vegan. She served us iced tea instead of water, a nice change. We ordered banh mi, rice noodle w bbq pork and spring roll, and banh bao. The food came out really fast and was beautiful and delicious. The vermicelli was the best - I could eat that every day. It's crazy that vegan Vietnamese food can actually taste pretty good??? There are certain dishes that are hard to make vegan because it relies on that umami-ness that often comes from animal-based sources but I have to say that their Bun Bo Hue is something I would order again and again. You can call and order ahead for takeout or you can park at one of the public parking structures in Chinatown and eat there. I couldn't recommend it enough. I bring all my friends here. Many other bottles of hoy sin sauce, Sriracha, etc. were on the table, but they really didn't need any. My sister said that some of the textures of the "fake meats" were odd. She let me try some... ummm... maybe one was supposed to be like tendon??? I got the vermicelli with spring rolls and vegan BBQ pork. I liked the vegan pork because there was a nice outer crisp. This was maybe the BEST vegan Vietnamese restaurant I have ever been to. Absolutely blown away with the freshness, flavors, and service. Firstly, it feels like you are entering Aunty's home for a meal. It is a small but welcoming space. We saw locals enjoying big bowls of pho and bo bun hue on a dreary rainy winter day. Located in Chinatown, I stopped by for a late afternoon lunch. It was a Sunday afternoon and I was seated immediately and served complimentary pandan tea. This place is totally vegan despite dishes that are labeled otherwise. I had the phõ and it was flavorful. It was loaded with tons of items that I assume would replicate meat. A couple of items I couldn't eat because it did feel like it was the texture of meat products (gelatinous) in the items. The business seems to have repeat customers so service was a little slower towards me. But I was in no rush so didn't mind and was apologized to. This place is nestled in Chinatown and has amazing Vietnamese vegan food! The lady that works there speaks little English so my parents were helping her talk on the phone to translate. It was so funny, you can tell it's a family owned mom and pop shop. But that's when you know the food is gonna be bomb!! There are pictures on the menu to help you choose from, but here are some of my recommendations below: We ordered the com tam dac biet(rice combo plate) and everything on that plate tasted like the real thing! They made it so similar, I was like how is this vegan? So flavorful and yummy. The pho was also a hit! They use diff types of vegan protein so you get "beef" pieces and "meatball" pieces too. Normally when I get vegan pho from other places it's bland. But this place did such a great job with the broth! We also ordered the curry and beef stew with bread. This Vietnamese vegetarian place is really good!! I came here with the bf, dad, and mom's friends who were visiting from Thailand. They were all vegetarian and more on the strict side of no garlic or onions. This place was very accommodating with that request. The inside has about 5-6 small tables so if you have a party of 4 they can definitely fit you there. Very cozy I would say lol but I forgot to take other pictures and only took my own bowl of noodles!! Since I don't eat beef this was the closest I would get to trying a bun bo hue but vegetarian version. Also if you try this place you must try the summer rolls!! It is so good!!! I would definitely recommend this place to others who are vegetarian and would like some tasty Vietnamese food. Visiting the island for a month and this has to be my favorite restaurant that I've visited! Let alone probably one of my favorite vegan spot ever. I've gone back 3-4 times and going back one more before I leave. You can tell this place is loved by the locals. I'm from California so we have a plethora of vegan viet establishments but this has to be one of the top ones for me. I got the bun bo hue, hu tieu kho (dry noodles), eggrolls, & hainan chicken rice plate here and my god the flavor!! Plus they give you a side of chilis WHICH I LOVE! I have never been to a restaurant that give it to u without asking. I knew i was in love as soon as the waiter dropped it off. They also have lemongrass oil that you can put in your soup for more flavor and i'm obsessed with it they need to start jarring it up and selling it! ALSO, i haven't had viet coffee since i went vegan over 5 years ago and they have one with coconut condensed milk and it was as good as i remembered it Service is quick, nice, and warm overall. Excellent vegan Vietnamese food! It is an extensive menu. The summer rolls had vegan faux ham with garlic chips, a surprisingly good flavor and texture. The Hainan Chicken was fried and breaded tofu skin served with a complex ginger sauce. The two bahn mi sandwiches are less flavorful, I don't recommend ordering them. They served us free iced pandan tea (which tasted similarly to barley tea). It is a very small restaurant, only around 5 tables. It's not ideal for a large group. I am a meat lover but this place really surprised me! I don't often go for vegan/vegetarian options but this shop has excellent reviews and I can totally see why! Went for lunch on a weekday since it is a short walk from my office. The restaurant was packed when I got there - there were even people waiting to dine in. As I walked up to order, I noticed all the dishes at the different tables - they all looked so good. I decided on the Hainan Chicken, spring rolls, and Vietnamese coffee. Total came out to around $32 - a bit pricey but was very filling! I would say the food is enough for two people. I waited outside and the food was ready in less than 10 minutes. I got my coffee first and I loved how they put a plastic holder on your cup so you could easily carry it. Reminded me of being back in Asia at a food stall! Now for the food - both plates were packed. The spring rolls came with three rolls, lettuce, veggies, noodles, and sauce. I loved how they packed in the fresh herbs and veggies and they were not skimpy at all! The flavor was excellent and tasted like a typical spring roll - fried to perfection. I was most excited for the hainan chicken which seems to be a yelp favorite. This "chicken" is deep fried and served with a ginger sauce. The rice is SO flavorful and was a generous serving size. The chicken reminded me of a chicken katsu - it actually had a chicken like texture which is so shocking! The ginger sauce it came with was delicious and complimented the dish very well. All right guys, let's be real! Yelp... you really did trick me. Long story short, we were actually supposed to go to a different pho location, however, they were having renovations. I ended up stumbling on this location through using yelp, and, of course, filtering it down to ratings and this one popped up at 5 stars. When we got to the location, we noticed that it was really really busy. However, a customer flagged us down because she was done with her table and told us to take her table. The menu is simple and of course I didn't understand it but I knew that I wanted to eat something and try new things considering we've been eating at the same pho location way to often. We ended up ordering beef stew, bao bun, pho, and wonton. As we sat to wait for our food, we had noticed that there were so many people coming in to pick up food as well as having formed a line out the door. We got our food and realized that it was strictly VEGAN!!! I mean, don't get me wrong, it's not like I won't try it however, this girl was talking so much about how she can't wait to eat steak and eat a fat bahn mi! But OK I'm the real my most favorite item here was the bao. With the slightly sweet bun and all that flavor from the veggies it was really good. The beef stew was very flavorful but with a tinge of lemongrass flavor that I was not keen about. The wonton wasn't that bad. It actually had taro, peas, corn and carrots. The dipping sauce was more like a mild salsa. The pho was pretty tasty with a little kick of pepper. The "vegan meat" in there was to noticeable with not being meat so that was hard to swallow. A Vegetarian Vietnamese Restaurant. What a great idea! Vietnamese cuisine is all about fresh vegetables, fresh ingredients. Thuong An Lac is the place to be! There aren't many, if any, restaurants that offer imitation meats. It's located at the corner of Kekaulike and North King Street, right across Oahu Market. The only other vegetarian restaurant that comes to mind is Water Drop in Downtown. Ever since Legend Vegetarian Restaurant closed many years ago, I haven't had imitation meats since. I secretly enjoy imitation meat, because those "meats" are mostly setons/wheat gluten, and that's one of my favorite foods! The menu at Thuong An Lac looks to have so many "meat" dishes! From Broken rice with Pork Chop and Meatloaf to Crab Tomato Vermicelli Soup to Hainan Chicken to Duck Noodle Soup to Beef Stew. Inside is quite small with just a few tables. The entrance is in the building across fromNew Hong Kong Supermarket. I started with the Banh Bao (Steamed Pork Bun). Inside had carrot, cabbage, wood ear mushroom, and vegan pork. It looked like pork! The filling tasted fine. It was light and simple. The bun itself was okay. Not as fluffy and airy. It was more dense and sticky. The Vegetarian Pho looked very good when arrived at the table with a variety of faux meat and a clear broth. The broth was piping hot and had really solid flavors with the usual spices and herbs. Sure it lacked the savoriness and heartiness of beef or other real meat, but it didn't take away too much from the usual Pho experience. I liked how they use different faux meat to imitate exactly what's in a combination pho. Overall, for a Vegetarian Pho, it was filling and good. I do miss the meat and all the aspects that come with it, but this Pho still had excellent and typical flavors. The Satay sauce was good, which was more on the Ginger side. Good, friendly service. I've had this place bookmarked for a while after searching for bun rieu places in Honolulu. It was my fault that I didn't read the reviews beforehand and I was surprised it was a vegan Vietnamese spot when I brought my mom today. The place was packed and a nice man who was eating alone, moved over to another table so we could be seated at his. We decided to try the bun rieu and hainese vegan chicken. My mom and I both enjoy vegetarian Asian food so while we didn't plan on getting vegan bun rieu for lunch, we both ended up loving this place. The "chicken" was nice and crispy, the rice and side soup were full of flavor. The bun rieu broth and noodles were tasty as well. Highly recommend and would return for sure! read more

So far, we've been in Waikiki for a week and we've already gone twice for the food here. Such a gem of a mom & pop place. Small and cozy with hardworking aunties making sure your food is good. The spring rolls are tasty. The pho is satisfying. The lemongrass tofu plate has a good mix of crispy, tender, salty, juicy. Also, use the lemongrass chili oil and chili salt that's on the table. It gives your food so much flavor! I was so fond of this that I'm going to make my own version at home. Oh, also...the water they give you is derived from pandan tea. So refreshing and so delicious.
