Dinner in Kapahulu, Honolulu, Hawaii... My church aunty likes pho, so I suggested that we go to Pho Old Saigon since we both had never been - even though it opened over six years ago! Located on the corner of Campbell Avenue and Kapahulu Avenue, we kind of knew that parking would be challenging. The small shared lot in the back only has about 8 parking stalls. We found metered street parking in front of Saint Mark's Episcopal Church which is free after 6pm. Service could be better. Maybe English as a second language was the barrier. I was given a soiled spoon - the server walked away after I told her, but I was able to use the fork and disposable chopsticks. We had to ask twice if the bill could be split. That's ok... it eventually got done and we weren't in a rush. I ordered vermicelli with grilled shrimp (which had a nice smokey essence) and Spring Rolls which were crunchy and tasty. I've been coming here for years. Great authentic Vietnamese food and consistently good every time. The vermicelli noodle dishes are always solid whether you get chicken, shrimp, spring rolls, or my personal favorite, the marinated pork. The pho has really good depth of flavor without being overly sweet like some other places, and they're one of the few spots around that serves oxtail pho. The bánh mì is excellent too. They bake their bread fresh daily in-house, and you can taste the difference. This is the 3rd time we've visited this location and it really well deserving my 5-star review. Wifey and I moved in the area (practically walking distance) surrounded by great restaurants. I believe there are 3 Pho's in the vicinity but always comes back to this place. The service is very quite fast and family oriented... Im still not sure what each item was but the flavor of the liquid inside was very good, it was kind of malty like corn flakes. I don't know if it was the mung beans or ruby gems or what but it was more than just coconut milk. For me it was the flavor of the liquid, the cold crushed ice and other items that gave it texture which all worked together to make a tasty drink. I can see why my friends like this place so much. The drinks are great. Service was prompt and friendly, though there's only 1 or 2 servers so be patient when its busy. Theres a small parking lot in the back that holds maybe 5 cars, but is shared with other businesses, so if you're lucky you can snag one of them otherwise its street parking. One thing I did notice from other pics were that some drinks come in different cups. Does it depend on what drink you get? is it whatever cup they have available? My sister and I ordered Vegetarian Pho and Rare Steak & Flank Pho to go. They gave us mint water while we waited and friendly kind service. She even opened the door for us as we left. Traveling a mile home upon arrival the food was still hot and steaming. We prepared the order our selves. We asked for extra sprouts and they gave them no charge. Wow, my recent visit to Pho Old Saigon was super Awesome! During the week of Father's Day we were undecided on where to go, as it was getting closer and I was getting worried but problem solved. I suggested Pho Old Saigon to my siblings, called to make reservations for party of 10. Luckily I was able to get a reservation since it was so last minute. When we arrived our table for 10 was ready for us, noticed the "RESERVED" sign on our table. The restaurant was busy and our reservations was @7pm and Pho Old Saigon closes at 8 pm but they were super nice to accommodate our party. Thank you for this! The only one waiter working the front was awesome, he took everyone's order plus the other tables. The food came out quick or is it because we were busy chatting and enjoying our BYOB alcohol that I didn't even notice. We were there pass closing time and they didn't rush us out at all. Someone just told me that getting out of one's comfort zone is necessary to grow. Well, check out my growth because we tried Pho Old Saigon on Kapahulu Ave. today! This is not our usual Vietnamese pho stop. So here's the good and the bad. First off, it was good that there is free parking in the back. We got here at 11:30am on a Monday and there were a few empty stalls! Next, the place is lovely. There are high and low tables, benches and chairs... something for everyone. Each table gets its own carafe of water enhanced with mint leaves and lemon (so quaint). We got a 3pc. order of spring rolls, which is the perfect bite before our main event. The rolls came hot and did not disappoint. Next, we both ordered the combo pho - brisket, rare steak, beef ball, tripe, tendon. It was a good size. You won't leave hungry. Lastly, the bad. As you come in, there's a sign stating that they are shorthanded. Expect to wait. So my advice is to bring someone interesting. If you need to kill time, you should have someone fun to talk to! For total transparency, I'm disclosing that I kinda, sorta know the owners by way of 6 degrees of separation/association. My wife's brother's co-worker's wife's nephew's wife's parents are Dan and Sue, the proud proprietors of Pho Old Saigon. Finding the restaurant by way of the convoluted grapevine, we made sure to visit when we were in Honolulu. Dan even took time out from his busy kitchen duties to come greet us like family. They started the restaurant on Kuhio Ave, 17 years ago and I remember it from one of our earlier vacations, but didn't know about our connection then. Due to a fire at the old location, they reopened here on Kapahulu and the new place looks gorgeous! During Covid, they did takeout just to survive, like most restaurants and only recently reopened for indoor dining in June. It was a cool evening, so we walked over from our condo nearby. Not knowing when we'll be back this way again, we had to try a whole bunch of things from the menu. For me, it's always the biggest bowl of pho I can get, which was the #37 Special Combo Pho with sliced rare steak, beef brisket, tendon, flank, tripe and meatballs. The bowl turned out deeper than it looks and the depth of flavor was just as deep. You can smell and taste the anise, cardamom and cinnamon up front and they slowly meld together as the hot broth mixes in with the beef flavors. Mmmm... My brother-in-law connection got the oxtail pho, another good beefy choice. My wife had the beef stew with baguette. It was a little heavy in the star anise, but OK. She stole a few spoonfuls of my broth though. My son got what is usually at other Viet restaurants, the triple pork threat over rice (pork egg meatloaf, shredded pork, grilled pork chop). Only here, it is the Broken Rice Deluxe with a quad element added: a grilled Chinese sausage. Broken rice in Cantonese is what we call lahn fahn, broken grains of long grain white rice. It cooks up softer and fluffier than whole grains, but you have to be careful in how much water and how long you cook it or it will become mush. I loved broken rice as a kid! On top of all that, we absolutely had to try the Banh Mi. After all, Dan makes all their baguettes fresh every day! Who does that?! (except Subway?) My son described the way to experience the best baguettes is using all 5 senses, not just taste and smell. In addition to seeing the beautiful golden brown exterior, you feel the texture of the soft, airy inside and also have to hear the crust give that satisfying *crunch* as you bite into it. Of course we got the Special Saigon Combo Banh Mi with Pork Pot Roast, Steamed Pork Roll & Paté. It was stuffed with pickled veggies and plenty of cilantro, just the way I like it. Walking in there was a woman behind the counter and I asked if this was Old Saigon? She shook her head no so I started to leave when a table of four started to wave me in saying she (counter lady) didn't speak English very well and didn't understand what I was asking. Not a problem....I don't speak Vietnamese. My lunch partner arrived and I was saved, or so I thought, as Lien is fluent in Vietnamese! The menu is of the point and shoot variety so should have been easy. I wanted to try the Bun Bo hue, ordered. Decided to split the Banh Mi, ordered. Lien wanted the Clay Pot Pork, both of us commented we didn't want catfish. I guess pointing and fluently speaking didn't mean much. Soup arrived, taste of the broth was awesome but disappointed in the lack of meat in it. I would say less than half of what I usually receive at Pho Time, Stadium Pho or actually anywhere. Also the veggies that came with it were yesterday's and only bean sprouts and basil. Banh Mi was a four star of five but only because the bread was outstanding. The clay pot arrived and it was catfish. Lien sent it back and out comes an elderly...seriously elderly, woman who I assume was the cook and probably owner with the same clay pot. Don't know what the heated conversation entailed but Lien pointed to the menu and said the pork was what she ordered....needless to say we (Lien) ate the catfish. Right next to Taylor's church (St. Mark's), they make their own bread for the banh mi and it was very good. I love putting hoisin and sriracha on top along with the jalapenos it was a bit spicy but good! The time before I had the coconut peanut curry which was also good. Anyways, we ordered spring rolls (crispy, packed, and delicious), combination pho (I've had better broth, but still pretty delicious), lemongrass chicken plate (different from what I'm used to, but good in it's own way), Special Saigon banh mi (spicy and delicious), and banana tapioca (delicious, but banana was reeealllly ripe). Their menu is huge and they have some classic dishes and drinks that my parents used to sell that you don't normally see in restaurants nowadays. Even their water that they give you is fancy and fruity. Staff were fast and friendly. Cute little family restaurant. The place is clean and looks new. The food tasted great and the customer service was friendly. They accommodated our party of 11 (9 adults, 2 toddlers). The restaurant itself was empty when we were dining in, so we were the only costumers. Drivers who do food delivery service did come on and out of the shop as we were eating.
