Dinner in Honolulu, Hawaii... I've always wanted to visit Pho Tri Vietnamese Restaurant because they used to have a buy one, get one half off pho special on Saturdays. Unfortunately, that special has been discontinued. Our server said that the new owner probably discontinued that special... maybe ten years ago... LOL! This place has been around for quite awhile! Bonus: For free parking, enter the parking structure from Beretania Street, before the building, and go up to the second floor for "commercial parking". We couldn't find the door to the restaurant from the parking structure (it's hidden behind a pole), so we ended up on Beretania Street and walked around the block to the entrance on Kalakaua Avenue. There's a door in the restaurant's hallway that leads to a stairway to the parking structure. The interior is very spacious. There are actually two rooms - maybe the back room can hold a private party! Service was pleasant and helpful! I ordered my favorite: vermicelli with spring roll and grilled pork. I was feeling sickly after a rough final quarter of the year due to sleep deprivation and stress, and therefore in desperate need for nutritious soup. I came here and ordered my usual, the phở đặc biệt, because I like to try the house special for any business and am indecisive about what meat I want. It tasted like what I grew up with back in LA: hearty meat, fragrant (and possibly healing?) herbs, and warm soothing broth. I am thankful that I can find a taste of home away from home. My mom was excited for me to try this place. Could I call Phở Trí an authentic phở restaurant? What is authenticity? As a diasporic Vietnamese person, I probably spent about 2.5% of my childhood in Vietnamese restaurants. Many of these restaurants were phở places that serve your prototypical phở: a bowl of some sort of beef, rice noodles, fresh herbs, broth, etc. Have I been experiencing authentic Vietnamese food? Or is this actually more authentically Vietnamese American food? The restaurant interior is not unlike other Vietnamese restaurants on the mainland. The clientele however reflects the neighborhood: I usually expect to be one of many Vietnamese people at a phở restaurant, but on the occasion of my visit, I was the only Vietnamese-speaking client. When I ordered in Vietnamese, I was understood perfectly but was responded to in English which is perhaps by default and out of habit. It's been a bit since I've been to Phò Tri. Near the corner of Kalakaua Ave. and South Beretania St. Two dining areas, as if the primary isn't big enough. The phò is good but on my recent visit, I requested the BBQ Pork Chop Plate. Walked in and got it for takeaway. Hours: 1100a till 200p daily, for lunch. Dinners hours are 500p to 900p everyday. It took about 12+ minutes to get my order. Plate had two pork chops with lettuce/tomato and jasmine rice. Two containers of sauce were included bur not needed as the chops were exceptionally seasoned. Only quibble: a bit dry. Price was reasonable at $17+ Parking is in the back...via the senior apartment complex, accesible from a hallway door...never used the parking. Our Go-To Pho Spot We've picked up from Pho Tri several times now, and it's officially our favorite for Vietnamese takeout. Located at Kalakaua & Beretania, there's metered street parking or a small lot off Beretania. Orders are ready in about 15-20 minutes after calling in & super convenient. I have always had a positive experience when calling in my order. Favorites include the brisket pho (broth is rich and flavorful), lemongrass chicken vermicelli, chicken bánh mì, lemon beef salad, and both spring and summer rolls. The spring rolls stay crispy even after 30-40 minutes wait. My 3-year-old loves dipping her bánh mì into the pho broth. Love how we are able to order a side of broth for only $5 extra. I fondly remember the beef salad and today I made sure I got to eat it again. It was as good as I remember. The prices are reasonable and the food was good. My friend had I fought to pay the bill. Now that we've finally entered the rainy season, I was craving a hot bowl of pho. Dined here with a friend and was super happy with the quick service and great food. Like, look how fresh the basil and bean sprouts looked! The pho came out within mere minutes and I was more than happy to chow down. The broth was comforting and flavorful, thankfully it didn't have the cinnamon like flavor that some restaurants have. What surprised me the most was the amount and flavor of the meat! Hiding under the broth of my pic was an insane amount of meat, enough to have a piece of meat with every bite. And it wasn't just simply boiled meat either, each piece (except the rare steak which is fair) was actually seasoned and provided an extra flavor profile to the bowl. Prices are reasonable and this may be my new go to spot for pho when the cravings hit. Parking is free in the garage, although a little bit of a squeeze. After getting a late start shopping for a replacement hair dryer for my wife and a head start Christmas shopping for my 3 precious grandkids we fled Ala Moana Center focused on noodles for dinner. After striking out at McCully Shopping Center we decided on a steaming bowl of pho. Off to Pho Tri, one of our go-to restaurants for consistently clean and tasty pho. We arrived a tad bit after 8:00 pm and snagged parking right in front of the restaurant. Zipped in and our 2 bowls of piping hot pho were brought to our table as we munched on the fresh pile of bean spouts dipped in their house made chili sauce. Clean broth with star anise aroma with good size serving of eye round steak and well done flank steak. I surprised my wife and myself by finishing the large bowl. Must have been all of that walking and stressing over kiddie gifts. Overall and excellent tummy warming meal on a not-so-windy and cold evening. It was great to support a local small business on Small Business Saturday and even though we finished 5 minutes of closing, the owner took time to chat with us about the challenges of owning and operating a food service business. This is an area I'm well acquainted with having opened the State's Business Action Center ages ago. We talked of life, kids, grandkids, immigrant life in America and our travels throughout Vietnam. What I nice personal way to bond with the hardworking owner and to acknowledge the work that goes into keeping a business afloat in these stressful times. My hats off to Mr. Nguyen. Was in the mood for pho, but my diverticulitis flared up and pretty much had me bed ridden. Luckily we had a gift card to door dash. Ordered the beef combo pho which comes with rare beef, brisket, tripe and tendon. Dasher arrived fairly quickly and the soup was in a separate container from all the other stuff. They give a healthy amount of noodles which is great. Unfortunately while the broth was hot, it wasn't hot enough to cook the rare beef. No worries, that's what a quick trip to the momicrowave is for. Everything was super delicious, the only issue was there was only one medium sized piece of tendon and only a few strands of tripe. There was, however, a fair amount of rare beef and brisket. Overall the pho is excellent and hopefully next time I crave pho I'll be able to go down to the restaurant myself. Sometimes you just want a really good bowl of pho broth. The noodles and topping complement the broth. It's only a dollar difference between medium $14.99 and large S15.99. Their spring roll are alway nicely fried and crispy, but I'm not a fan of their stuffing, so I usually just stick with a large bowl of Pho. Front door faces Kalakaua Avenue. The buildings parking entrance is on Beretania. If you're lucky enough to get meter parking by the front door, pay for it. It's not worth going around the block just to get to their free parking. I pride myself in knowing most restaurants around town, especially if they've been around for a while, so I was surprised when my friend suggested this place and I had no idea what he was talking about. It's located around the corner from a Senior housing building at the beginning of Kalakaua and Beretania. You can park on the second floor of the building for free but be careful that you don't get stuck in the lot which I think closes at 8 or 9 pm. You can exit but you can't get in unless you ask the restaurant to let you into the lot which we didn't know. Clean, comfortable, and reasonably priced, it's run by a very pleasant older couple. They have all the usual favorite standard Vietnamese dishes. I got a medium pho with eye round steak and tripe and my friend got the spring rolls and pork in vermicelli (bun). I liked the clean taste of the broth and tripe though there wasn't much of it. The beef was nice and tender and my pho came with the usual dish of fresh vege condiments. This pleasant neighborhood restaurant is a great place to go if you don't feel like cooking or if you want a nice, but casual place to dine out. read more

Nowadays pho has gotten so expensive, what happened to the $10-$12 bowls? I didn't want to pay $18-$20 so I was browsing around and saw that this place is about a dollar or 2 less than the average. It's in a busy area, not like walking or shopping busy, but street busy. I got lucky with street parking about a 20 second walk away. Not sure if there's a parking lot or area. The restaurant was pretty big, but very empty. There was only 1 other person in there and he finished up when I got my bowl of pho. He sounded very satisfied. I ordered a large pho with meatballs and well done brisket, which wasn't an option combination on the menu but they were happy to do so. Always have to taste the broth before saucing!! Good pho broth. Some places are bland or weird colors, this one is good and standard. Hearty and soothing. I sometimes have trouble finishing a large, but this one kind of felt like a medium, maybe to make up for the $1 or $2 less than other places? The bowl just seemed smaller than a large. But! The amount of meat that was in there? Way more than most places. They did not skimp on the well done brisket at all. I ate a piece of meat with every bite of noodles, and I still had a couple of pieces left of the brisket. So is it the large about of meat or the little amount of noodles? They also added 7 pieces of meatballs but it looked like they cut them into about 3-4 pieces each so not that many. The combination of pho broth (unsauced) and meat balls are just heaven to me, so I wish there was more. But overall pretty satisfied by the amount of meat. You know how Asian women don't tend to care about being friendly when taking orders or serving, caring more about efficiency? And nothing wrong with that, efficiency over friendly. Not sure if it's because I was one of 2 people in there, but she was very nice. She brought over sriracha after I ordered, there's a different hot sauce sitting on the table to start. Maybe this is to prevent stealing because of the shortage that happened? Haha. The man at the register was a bit slow ringing me up but that's alright, there was no rush. I guess it's a good thing I ordered the large, because I was thinking about the medium... but I was still searching for noodles at the bottom of my large at the end. A neighborhood restaurant that serves delicious foods at very reasonable prices. I forgot my vax card so we had to order our food to go. We had pho with eye round steak and meatball (didn't take pictures because everything was wrapped separately) and spring rolls pork slices Vermicelli. The pho was great! Broth was very flavorful and they gave us ample amount of bean sprouts and basils. The steak was a bit small and only a few pieces but I like how they wrapped the steak individually instead of putting them into the broth so they were completely raw when I opened it and I could cook them according to my liking. I have to say the vermicelli was a bit disappointing. I usually loveeee spring rolls but their spring rolls didn't meet the expectations. It's not the sogginess that was expected cos we ordered it to go. It was the thick spring roll skins (wait I think those are called rice papers right? Sorry my bad). A good spring roll should be crispy, light and airy but their spring rolls were a bit doughy. That's the reason why I took away 1 star. We also had the iced coffee which was so strong and delicious! Not very sweet but just very strong. If I ever have to work night shift I'd probably get that before my shift to get me through the night. Their food is very affordable, a few dollars cheaper than the vietnamese restaurant that we usually go to. SOS... went here on a Saturday night and it wasn't busy at all. Don't mean to sound the alarm, not sure how long this locally owned restaurant can last at this pace. The menu is pared down a bit, but the pho still remains. The soup is still good, with a strong cinnamon flavor. Didn't realize that pulling the BOGO 50% off special impacts the how much people come. The price is still reasonable, $11.99 for a large bowl. Parking is upstairs, go down to the first floor then enter the door on the left that's open ajar and looks like a service door, it's just a faster way into the restaurant. It feels like a mom and pop run restaurant, so very cozy and relaxing. I've only gone for lunch during the work week, but it's never too crowded or loud. They have a TV playing those street food YouTube videos to watch while waiting for the food. The wait is never long, though they do sometimes forget to refill water. I go primarily for the reasonably priced pho that's also delicious. I'm not a foodie so I can't give a very descriptive analysis, but as an average pho-lover, it's good enough for me! One of my favorite pho places on the island. Been going to Pho Tri for years, and realized I never gave them a fair review. They are excellent. Their menu is simple and streamlined. They make pho and they do it extremely well. The amount of meat that they give is always very generous. Their house made Sambal is incredible. Above all the people there are genuinely some of the nicest people I have met. Their customer service is excellent. And I ate here again tonight with a friend from Big Island, and he liked it too. Another friend from Oahu says it's her favorite place for pho too. So many people like Pho Tri! Tonight I ordered pho with rare steak and tendon. To me, the best part of pho is the broth that has to have a good depth of flavor and not taste watery. The noodles need to be cooked, but not mushy, and the tendon has to be soft. All of these things are true at Pho Tri. They also serve the standard Thai basil and bean sprouts, but they also give culantro too, which is great. There are lots of tables, and I've never seen the place packed, which is weird because the food is so good. It's nice to always be able to get a table! Parking is a little bit weird. Free street parking on Kalakaua after 6pm, but apparently there's a private lot too, but I've never parked there. Usually can find parking easily on the street in the evening. read more

My friend took me here for lunch after class, and we got in around 12:30pm, and it was EMPTY. I was a little skeptical, because it's prime lunch hour and yet we were the only customers. I got the medium #12, which was a pho with Eye Round Steak and well-done brisket. I had the steak come on the side. The medium was the perfect size for me, and I've never been to a place that gave SO MUCH MEAT. Woah. I swear, my bowl was 40% meat, 40% noodles, and 20% broth. After a while into our meal, I looked around and realized that there were now a good number of people in the restaurant. Maybe the lunch rush just comes later here? I also learned that they have BOGO 25% for pho on Saturdays! My friend said it can get crazy busy on Saturdays due to this, so plan accordingly! There's also free parking in the lot! read more

This is a tried and true Vietnamese restaurant with delicious pho for a good price (only $9.99 for the large bowl!), especially on Saturdays when they have BOGO 25% off (for pho only). FOOD: Their broth has a lot of great flavor and they use good quality meat. Veggies and herbs are fresh - no browning basil here. SERVICE: Service is excellent. Waiters are attentive, friendly, and efficient. PARKING: They do offer a good amount of parking in their building. The entrance to the structure is on Beretania Street, just before the left turn for Kalakaua. And when you follow the signs to take the stairs down to the restaurant, they usually leave the back entrance open so you do not need to go back out to the street to enter through the front. MISC: It's worth mentioning that this is a place that closes in the afternoons from 2:30 to 5:30 (except for Tuesdays when they do not reopen again for dinner).
