This is one of my OG Vietnamese spots in all of Hawaii for Pho Ap Chao!!! If you love Pho, then you should try Pho Ap Chao. It's better and this place dos it best. The staffs are very friendly and makes you feel so comfortable. The booth seats might be a bit worn down and old BUT I love it. This is my favorite Pho Restaurant IN THE WORLD! Bold statement, but once you try here, you'll be hooked too! The only downside is the location downtown -- out front is kind of sketchy, so go during the day, park in the Chinese Cultural Plaza parking and it's pretty safe. We always order the same dishes. Decided to try this place out as it was open early on Sunday morning. It was fairly crowded at 8:30am but we were able to get a seat. Server came quickly with water and utensils and menu. After a few minutes he came back to take our order. The order took about 5min to come out. I had the medium combination pho. The broth had a good flavor and the meats inside were good. Only thing is I didn't get any tripe in my combination, so was hoping for that. I will explicitly ask for it to be included. Definitely a good choice for a quick bowl of pho. read more

However, the broth, service, and price help to edge out the nearby competition. The food is great and while I wish I snapped pictures of this recent food-venture with coworkers we were all starving and oh-so-hungry we all neglected to stop to let the camera eat first! At around $13 pre-tax and tip for a medium pho, we all found the bowls to be just enough to make sure you're not hungry, but also not overly full. Some of us with bigger appetites wished we ordered shared sides or larger bowls - but things that we can settle on our next outing for sure! I got diarrhea after eating at this restaurant. I was coming here to carb up for my run race the next day, but the unclean food upset my GI tract, in turn, messed up my race. I wish I could give it better rating, but there is nothing fantastic about restaurant like most the reviews stated. The restaurent itself is not clean, we can see the red hot sauce sprayed on the curtain blinds, the staff could easily wipe them off, but they didn't seem to have any notion of cleanliness. Other than the Pho, we ordered a few other dishes 1 the Stir fried tofu- it tasted good, 2 the chicken rice dish- it tasted good, 3 the lemonades- it tasted fresh and sweet 4 the French ice coffee- it had a strong deep taste, as expected. 5, the fried spring rolls- why so cheap with the lettuce? They gave us 3 lettuce leaves were teared in half and 2 spritz of mint leaves. 6, now the Pho, I got #12 medium size with steak, tendon and beef balls. The soup was clear and there were a tiny portion of rice noodles on the bottom, but all the rave about this Pho, were overrated. The atmosphere of the restaurant was not great, weird layout with sliding doors cutting the place in half, and unclean. This is by far one of the top 2 BEST pho restaurants in town (the other being Bac Nam on King St.). First of all, location is great as there is reasonably priced parking in the Chinatown Cultural Plaza off Maunakea Street. Second, this restaurant opens at 8am, so when we have our pho cravings even for breakfast, we know where to go. The service is wonderful, they're very friendly and accommodating. We always get the beef pho, with either a side of spring or (and) summer rolls. The vegetables are fresh, and the sauces are on point. I also order their condensed milk coffee, iced. It's so refreshing, and since it's very strong I ended up adding water to it to make it last longer. And the pho... man. So good. You can choose from 3 sizes, I tend to get the large but have ventured to the xl a few times. It's so tasty. I finish my bowl in minutes because I am so focused on how delicious it is. Civil defense alarms could be going off but I wouldn't notice because I'd be hunched over my bowl, slurping away. Had an opportunity recently to come back to the island for a visit and the must have on my list was PHL. I remember when I was in school this place was on my weekly rotation, sometimes even twice a week. Not sure if it's due to being in college and started drinking and this is ALWAYS a good cure for hangovers, but PHL always hits the spot. Not only their combo pho, but also their spring rolls. One thing I don't get elsewhere that this place is so thoughtful, is they cut the lettuce to the exact size for rolling on the outside of the spring rolls. Add a little mint, you got the perfect combo. Also, rarely in Colorado the pho places would leave out the baby sauce dishes, I always have to ask for it. My favorite way to eat pho is to dip the sauce and not drench the soup... and when you eat at PHL, you need to taste the soup. It's just that good. If they used any msg my body couldn't tell, it just tastes like it's slow simmered for hours.... And I'm not tired after. The meat ball is also a whole small meatball cut in half, not sliced flat pieces that does not look like it's a meatball. Most of the time, those sliced meatball has a weird taste... not here at PHL. I always get the combo pho, everything is so delicately sliced, the tendon is super tender, the tripe smells clean, the beef is all so tender too. It's been 20 years since I moved away, and one of the owners was looking at me like she knew me - she said, you look so familiar... I let her knew I was a long time kama'aina that moved away... but before I did I visited every week, even when I moved away from Honolulu to Makakilo. I also really love their sate chili sauce. Come to find out they use this specific kind that can really be found on the island that's from Thailand. It's spicy and savory. They sell the jars here if you'd like to take one home or you could find it in any of the Vietnamese mom and pop grocers in Chinatown. Invited by a friend, I went to Huong Lan for lunch. I thought it wouldn't be so crowded because it was a weekday, but the restaurant was almost full. It seems that many of them are regular local customers. Everyone chose Pho from their favorite size, large, medium and small, and ate it deliciously. My friend confidently said, "The broth is clean and the vegetables are fresh!" When the Pho was served to the table I was convinced it was true. The clear soup that Japanese people like is salty and might be perfect for hot Hawaii. I was relieved that the vegetables were certainly fresh and there were no brown parts anywhere. The water that was served also tasted clean. I chose the middle size, but I might have been able to finish the big size as well! The French coffee after the meal was also very delicious with a deep taste. It was about $24 with tip. When I moved to oahu 15 years ago- I automatically thought there would be some legit pho restaurants but I found myself disappointed over and over again. I have found a few other spots that are good but nothing that compares to the bowl of pho I just had at pho Huong Lan. You can tell their pot is seasoned... the rich flavors are perfection. The service is quick- efficient. Typical Vietnamese style. The woman at the front is so friendly. She said this is a family run business, her parents opened the restaurant 33 years ago. Summer rolls in Honolulu's Chinatown... For the past few days, I was craving Summer Rolls. The restaurant by my house in Kaneohe doesn't open until 11am and I happened to be in town, so, I searched my Yelp app and found Pho Huong Lan. LOCATION: in the mini-Mall of Cultural Plaza. Enter from Maunakea Street, through the glass doors and the restaurant is immediately on the right. PARKING: metered street parking (free on Sundays and holidays) or validated parking in the Cultural Plaza. SERVICE: polite and efficient. I just walked in and stood by the cash register until my order was ready. The man offered me two or four Summer Rolls and clarified that it's not the fried Spring Rolls. Good job! FOOD: I enjoyed the Crisp, fresh lettuce; Herbalness of the basil; Sweet firmness of the shrimp; Earthy crunch of the beansprouts; Chewyness of the wrapper: Comfort of the vermicelli; and Sweet nutty flavor of the dipping sauce! I've come here about a handful amount of times over the span of many years. Place is clean everytime I've went. Came to this location on a holiday at 12:30 pm and was seated within 5 minutes. I ordered the coconut juice, 6 piece spring rolls and #12 (pho with tons of different meats). Food was a 10/10 and service was a 10/10. Food came hot and ready. The last time I've came was without a doubt, the reason this place deserves a 10/10. I came in at 3:50pm with the hope I can at least do take-out (place closes at 4:00pm) and gave me and my party permission to dine in if we wanted because they were still cleaning. They were so welcoming and kind and everyone greeted me and thanked me for stopping by when I walked in and out of the restaurant. I got about 2 tbsp of beef; two spring rolls and a whole plate of plain noodles and paid $20 for it. Very disappointing and now I need to make something else to go with the noodles. If you head towards Maunakea St, you'll find the restaurant located inside near the glass doors bordering said street. The pho bowls come in three different sizes and prices -- medium ($10.99), large ($12.99), and x-large ($14.99). In the medium bowl, the meat portion was on the small side, but the rare beef and meatballs were tasty enough. The broth was mild in taste and aroma; a little on the "safe" side and maybe too clean. The eggrolls were crunchy and a few pieces with ample filling were included for $10.99. Vietnamese food isn't exactly common place in Hawaii therefore I can imagine this being the "it" spot with flavors as close to or as near as possible to the traditional. read more

Always good always familiar. When I go it's always filled with my Korean people. Lol, i love seeing men drinking at 8 am probably keeping up from the night before. Awesome. Then you have the ladies complaining that they're hungry while ordering and asking them to hurry their order. Never ceases to amaze me how clients can be. I always get the chicken pho here because the chicken is moist and I prefer chicken in the am vs beef. I get my side onions and a Thai iced tea with my two very crispy spring rolls. They know me already since I tend to stick to the same pho places all the time and if I like the food I'm a repeat customer! Its a small family run restaurant and they're always so polite and fast. Came here after a performance with some friends for a quick lunch on a Sunday. The wait was short and we got seated pretty quickly. This was my second time here, but its been years since I ate here. The service was amazing and prompt. We got our orders in quickly. The food also came out quickly. The broth was rich in flavor and tasted amazing. The noodles weren't too soft or too hard. There was ample meat in the broth and a good noodle to meat ratio. They also have a variety of sauces to add in or use for dipping. The prices are also really good for the amount of food you get. The restaurant was inside the Chinese Cultural Plaza and you can not see the restaurant from the street. I walked into the restaurant and was greeted to have a seat wherever I would like. I saw a check-in list in front of the restaurant so it must get busy. I ordered the shrimp summer rolls and the medium Pho Tai. I ordered the summer rolls without bean sprouts but they came out with bean sprouts! The summer rolls were pretty small and was mediocre. I definitely wouldn't order that again. The Pho Tai came out nice and hot. The broth was good but I expected amazing after reading all of the reviews. I wasn't that hungry so the medium sized pho was perfect.
