I tried the Pho. The broth is clear, but full beefy flavor. The spices is not overpowering at all. Generous portions of meats. The rice noodles are cooked perfectly. Herbs and vegetables are fresh. The price is good for the amount of food you get. The service was average though. But I didn't need much, but my food came out fast and piping hot. But she never came and checked and refill my water. This place is quintessentially Chinatown, Maybe ten seats, two doors, one out to the street, one into the shopping plaza at Maunakea, and it was bustling. Younger server had this place on lock, handling all customers without issues. Prices were reasonable, food came out quickly, and food was delicious. I can't speak on the pho, which everyone was having. Today I had a tradition Phnom Penh dry pho dish with broth on the side. It brought me back home, was beautifully seasoned, had ample protein, noodle and just what I needed today. Heard about this place serving Cambodian food on top of its extensive Vietnamese menu. We ordered take out for 4 without giving them a heads up on Christmas Day and they happily got our order to us within 30 minutes. They were very friendly and very fast paced. Every dish was perfect, not too much starch, not too salty, fresh vegetables, and perfectly cooked. We'd definitely come back to eat in in the near future. I would say the price is fair, you look at the price for a summer roll for example, and are initially shocked because it appears above market. Tasty broth, pretty generous amount of gan (beef tendon) in the bowl, and lots of veggies to put inside, and it fills me up pretty good. Usually service is pretty quick, however it can get busy during lunchtime, but usually I can get a seat pretty easily. Prices have creeped up a bit, but in the ballpark for a medium bowl of noodles at most other similar places ($14). The location is right in the heart of Chinatown. The dining room was pretty low-lit with a very loud TV playing Vietnamese music videos. We were sat at a table near the back. The dinings room has a drink fridge and extra cooking supplies throughout the area. Our server was nice and the food came pretty quickly. I have ordered takeout from Pho 97 a handful of times now. I love pho, but there is usually just one thing I always crave from this spot and it's the fried rice flour cake dish. It's fried rice flour cakes covered in eggs and topped with green onions. They pair it with their house soy sauce. It is a large portion and definitely enough to share. Pho 97. The last and final Vietnamese restaurant in Chinatown to try (Pho 88 closed!?). This wasn't saving the best for last. I was actually saving the lowest Yelp rated for last and debated whether I should even try. Well, now I know the reason for the 3.5 average stars. Actually, I'm surprised it's even that high. Pho 97 has been along Maunakea St--right outside the Maunakea Marketplace before Hotel St--for many years. 1997? I don't remember! The first thing that hit me as I entered this restaurant was the feeling of a public restroom. The sticky floors and table, the slight dampness and humidity in air, the odd AC odor, and restroom "clean linen" air fresheners. It did not feel comfortable at first, but I eventually got used to it. Typical fare. Pho is $13 for medium and $14 for large. If you are tight on time or super hungry, you'll get your Pho in less than 30 seconds after you order! I didn't even prep my sauces yet! Ugh, this Pho... First taste of the broth was just MSG with that sweet taste. Adding the vegetables helps, but not if there's a hair in the bean sprouts. Glad I saw it beforehand... All the beef was OH-Kay. It was on the tough side for everything. Thank goodness the saté sauce is tasty. Overall, it's safe to say this is the worst Pho in Chinatown. It might be on-par with places outside of Chinatown, but I never had a hair in my bean sprouts. I hope they didn't just take the hair out and be used for the next customer... Service was fine. The only Vietnamese restaurant in town who serves banh khot and they make it legit with the coconut milk and everything! It's nice and toasty/crispy on the edges and comes with your herbs and veggies as well as the nước cham sauce. They're always so friendly and accommodating. Back in the late 80's and into the start of 1990's there were days when I had frequently went out with my parents to what's known as - "Saimin stand" (it probably had a name but I always heard my parents call it that) if anyone was around Oahu- Honolulu, Hawaii (Kalihi area ) in those days there was one that was off of King st. close to Tamishiro Market across of the elementary school. They frequently was so busy that they tried their best to accommodate tables of 5-8 people... or more. The plates were those plastic, hard distinguished pastel green, yellow, pink in color. Serving the chicken or meat skewers. And then the saimin bowls with the decorative ring around the outside. This Pho 97 place on Maunakea st. Had brought back those memories of eating at the saimin stand again as a kid. The menu had so much to choose from and the service like the saimin stand I remember was just like this. It's the old Hawaii that exist here. Those days when you went in and sometimes a hot bowl of noodles be it saimin or pho.... is right there. I swear I reviewed this restaurant! Yelp Ghost isn't that funny anymore. It's ok though since Pho 97 is worth the time to write another review. I recall the food is good and the place is clean. Never had any real complaints about the restaurant so I'm down to dine there. It's just not the top of my list when I eat pho as I'm a creature of habit. When it rains, I usually crave soup and pho always is my go to for anything but for some strange reason, I was really craving Bun Bo Hue (BBH). I even watched some YouTube videos of BBH before bed so I knew I had to have it the following day. With the storm still present and many places still flooded or without power, I decided to make the journey to Chinatown anyways. When I got there, my first pick of where to eat BBH was closed. Next door was renovating. Third spot I thought of was closed and replaced with another Vietnamese restaurant but they were also closed. Power was out in these buildings. As I walked around Chinatown, I finally found a Vietnamese restaurant open (Pho 97) so I went it. I was literally the first customer of the day but the restaurant filled up by the time my order arrived. The bowl was a good size and the broth came out hot! It's perfect because it's the right temperature to cook all the fresh veggies. They give you an average portion of fresh veggies though. I enjoy lots of veggies with my BBH so I wish they gave just a little more. The broth is very tasty and the type of clear BBH broth I prefer. Noodles were perfectly cooked and soft. The pork blood cubes, fish cake, slices of beef and pork hock was just right for the portion. To top things off, the sauté sauce on the table is legit. This perfect bowl of awesomeness filled my BBH craving and has jumped Pho 97 up a couple spots on my go to restaurants (when craving BBH especially). read more

Our usual pho place wasn't answering the PHONE, so called Pho 97 which I hadn't been to in years since we used to walk here from our downtown office. Broth was lighter than the other place we go to but really great flavor! Generous vegetable serving, and included sriracha and hoisin. Family loved their pho; and it's closer to our house! We brought two people in case we needed to park in a loading zone, but found parking really close by; only one scary homeless guy to pass! The only place with banh khot and banh beo in Hawaii. So delicious and awesome. Authentic and you can't find these dishes at most places - it's not common. The banh kot come out steamy hot and fresh. Same with the banh beo in those tiny dishes. It's in Chinatown so expect the usual hole in the wall vibes and passing by the unhoused and mentally ill but that's the city for you. Haven't been here for a few years and it had changed ownership. Ordered: Large pho Medium pho Vietnamese crepe Pho - noodles were softer and had less bounce. It may have been overcooked or perhaps a different brand of noodles were used. Tendon was soft, broth was decent. Crepe - my family member ordered this and I had a bite. It was nice and crispy. There were 3 decent sized shrimp and sliced pork belly. I hardly order this so I'm not sure what the meat to vegetable ratio is. From my perspective, seemed like there were a lot of sprouts inside. I had some food leftover and asked for 2 small containers, one for the pho and one for leftover veggies. Employee said ok when I asked. When she returned with the containers she said it's an extra dollar. I understand why but it's a little annoying to pay extra. It's a tad unusual. Service: -family member arrived first and ordered crepe in advance (15-20 min prep time). When employee took the rest of our order she appeared a little flustered and proceeded to flip through the menu to repeat the crepe order and later flip menu pages to complete the rest of the order. Seemed odd and unnecessary, particularly repeating what we already know. The order was relatively simple. -put bill on table while we were still eating. First time here. Was recommended by my Vietnamese/Laos repair person. Of course it was fantastic! My usually got to pho place closes at 4pm. I guess that's how it is with a lot of pho places because it can also be breakfast? But glad Pho 97 was open. I called before hand because another place up the street did not answer my call when I had to check which restaurants are open now because of COVID. Some restaurant hours on Yelp are not updated. That restaurant seemed to be open when I parked close by but too bad they lost business from me. I also called Pho 97 before coming. The lady that answered was very pleasant and spoke perfect English. No offense. She also served us. She was nice. It's a pity there were not too many customers but atleast they did have a couple groups despite the times. Must mean they are popular! They had seated us with vacant tables between the groups so it felt very safe. Also was very clean. It had been a while we were out and wanted to support good local businesses so I told her so and ordered more than we can eat, just planned to take leftovers home.
