Once I added hoisin sauce, it took it to the next level. I don't think I could go here every week, because the flavors would probably blend together... But once a month, 100% I am hitting this place. FIRST time customer - Growing up only 2 blocks away from this location 70 years ago I vividly recall walking with my POPO and mother headed into Chinatown to spend the morning shopping at the open MARKET and after to have LUNCH at either Char Hun Sut and or Tin Tin - Our favorite order was soup'n noodles , a steaming HOT bowl of "Won Ton Mein" and or "Wor Won Ton Mein" - Mmmmm - After the KAPOLEI Chinese restaurant in KAPOLEI "closed" so abruptly and PERMANENTLY I was shocked and extremely UPSET since very few "old school" Chinese restaurants here on Oahu still cook the type of dishes that my CANTONESE pallet craves and savors - Still reeling from this loss and desperate to satisfy my hunger for just a DELICIOUS bowl of "Won Ton Mein" - So desperate for this specific cuisine I went on line searching "YELP" to search for a recommendation and came across this restaurant "Lam's Kitchen" - I drove from my home in EWA Beach (West Loch Fairways Townhomes) into Chinatown in the old RIVER STREET neighborhood hoping that this restaurant would have something that would satisfy my desperate craving for a great bowl of "Won Ton Mein". I arrived at noon and was very lucky to find a metered parking spot across from the restaurant on the very first try - As I entered I noticed that the room was very crowded and that here was only ONE open table so I sat down immediately and ordered the "Won Ton Mein" as the waitress approached me with a menu - I have to note that although this restaurant was located inside of a very old building the interior was a very sharp contrast - Everything appeared fresh and modern with very basic hand built picnic type bench seating and dining tables constructed of varnished raw wood (very spartan but practical and comfortable) - The bowl of soup was of average size and appeared very sparse with not much color - There was "NO" Pork Char Sui slices, only steaming hot clear chicken broth, a clump of thin Vermicelli white opaque noodles accompanied with a few small pieces of both chopped Mustard, Napa Cabbages and slivers of Green Onions - Extremely simple and basic. There were exactly "4" individual Won Ton that were filled with a tiny chunk of SHRIMP mixed into minced PORK HASH and regular spices (basic Soy sauce and Sesame Oil) - The "won ton PI" was very thin and light and the saimin noodles were made of the same Rice Flour mixture also - The broth was hot and savory but nothing special only because it was so "bland" to the taste. Although the restaurant was crowded to its Maximum Capacity within 15 minutes of my arrival it had practically "emptied itself out" with only myself a one other table of 6-dinners getting their food too. I will probably return to eat at this restaurant if and when I get another pressing urge to satisfy one of my insatiable cravings to drive all across Oahu from EWA Beach to Chinatown in the city of Honolulu . Located in Chinatown, Lam's Kitchen is on a corner on Maunakea Street. The building is brick and the restaurant has red doors, which we read had been newly renovated. Inside, the space feels busy with tables and people moving around. There are benches inside for those waiting for a table. We had to wait a bit before we were seated but they seemed efficient in ushering people in and out of the restaurant. The middle had smaller tables, which seemed most suitable for two people. The sides had larger tables for larger parties. The tables felt pretty close together but we enjoyed the stool/bench chairs we sat on. They were different than what we are used to in restaurants. Our order was taken quickly. We decided to get the beef chow fun, yang chow fried rice, and cheong fun. The cheong fun was good, especially after adding hoisin sauce. The texture was soft and the portion was quite decent. The chow fun was also yummy. It was tasty without being overbearing. The fried rice was our favorite. Amazing Chinese noodles restaurant in Chinatown known for their beef noodles! We had the beef mein, beef chow fun, and side order of look fun. Everything was great but the beef in the soup was the highlight, it was soft but not too soft and full of flavor. It paired perfectly with the noodles and soup. We have wanted to try this place for so long but the hours and potential lines were a factor in holding us back. But finally we were able to try this place on a Saturday afternoon at 2pm after the lunch crush. From the outside it's hard to miss as it blends in with the older buildings. But...the interior is something else. Super clean, bright, inviting and bustling with activity. We waited only a few minutes before being seated. We were given a menu and ordered quickly. We ordered beef chow fun and the stewed meat dish. The food came out hot and quickly. The first bite proved the hype is to be believed. Soup dish had lotsa of meat and noodles. Very busy, casual atmosphere like your typical Chinese place that turns over customers quickly. However, their wait staff are quite friendly and although busy, they work really hard to provide great service. The tables and benches are very basic and not cushioned, which makes for quick customer turnover. We hardly waited 2 minutes before they called us; even though there was a queue the entire time we were there it seems they go really quickly. Focus is on noodles (recommended) or rice dishes. We had beef chow fun (thick noodles) and a rice-noodle soup with pork and picked cabbage. Both dishes were very good. The chow fun was smoky, as if cooked on high heat, and the rice noodles were nicely spiced. The rice noodles came in a delicious broth. Parking is tough in Chinatown but there are several pay lots around. Be careful because the private pay lots can get expensive. But I always manage to grab some roast pork from the shop across the street. I had Singapore rice noodles from here in Honolulu's Chinatown, and the portion size for the cost of $14.50 was really good. It had a pleasant flavor from the curry powder. I was hungry and finished everything on my plate. I also got hot tea, but it didn't have any flavor for some reason; it tasted just like hot water. Most of their dry noodle dishes are variants of chow fun. I noticed that nearly all the tables seemed to have a plate of chow fun. There was a wait, but it didn't last long. It's a fairly dense restaurant that can get busy during peak lunch hours. The staff can combine tables to accommodate groups with more than two people. Since they changed their menu and renovated, I feel the choices and flavor of dishes have declined. Ordered the beef tendon mien noodle and ended up with chow fun cut rolls , barely any tendon and mostly beef. If I wanted Beef & Tendon, then this may have sufficed, but I just wanted tendon with skinny mien noodles. Second dish was the beef & tendon mien soup. Again, no tendon at all, ended up either all beef. Barely a trickle of veggies. Flavor was lacking as well. Used to be a very rich flavored sauce and broth. Nope, downhill. Third. Somehow we ended up with beef & tendon with chow fun noodles. This was the worst of all. 90% noodles stuck together. 3 small pieces of vegetable. 4pieces of beef and 3 tiny slivers of tendon. There was barely enough sauce for any flavor so had to add soy sauce and oyster sauce just to give it some taste. So disappointing. Threw out half the noodles since they disintegrated y separate them. Will never order this combo again. Please bring back your beef with hou hou sauce. It was the best. Wonton's i sautéed in chile sauce or black bean sauce was another favorite. Not on menu either. I had surgery and really wanted yummy after. Major bummer. We finally got to eat at Lam's Kitchen today. Our timing at 11:30 on Tuesday was good because after we sat down , the place was packed with people waiting for a table. I found out that they recently renovated and doubled in size. It is very nice, clean and modern inside. We ordered beef and tendon noodles and my daughter ordered fish filet with look fun and also got a side order of won ton. There are many condiments on the table so you don't have to ask for anything. There was shoyu, chili oil, salt, pepper, mustard, vinegar, hoisin sauce, Sriracha, and maybe more. The noodles were really good and it was full of beef and tendon. Lam's has renovated and expanded their space, increasing the number of tables and overall diner capacity. Even with the expansion, there is still a line, which is a testament to the taste and quality that have made them a destination. It seemed like every table had an order of the Doughnut Sticks, so we followed suit and were not disappointed. Same goes for the fried chicken wings. They are known for their Beef Flank and Tendon, and it is a must-try. The look fun is made fresh, and the noodles are incredibly soft. I asked for wontons without soup, topped with Beef Flank and Tendon. This is an off-menu combo. The gravy from the beef coats each wonton in savory goodness. Highly recommend asking for it this way. How ironic that I had just gotten back from New York on Friday and decided to then again, make a stop by Lam's Kitchen this weekend as a post-trip meal. Turns out that they had just reopened yesterday and I'm glad to announce that they have the same great taste with just more space. It's a little more decked out and fancy than before, taking over the space of the neighboring shop for nearly double that volume. Today, I opted in for the wonton mein just because I have just had some dry beef chow funn last week at another spot. I also thought that with the cold rainy weather, it was a perfect time for a hot dish so we all got soup noodle type dishes with a side of look funn for an appetizer. They sprinkled that little dash of white pepper on the top with what seemed like a tiny drop of sesame oil for that fragrance. I think they're trying to get used to the increased space and volume of customers as my order took a little longer to cook than I would've expected especially given that they orders would fly out much faster pre-renovation. This place was nearly full on a rainy day which means it'll be incredibly busy when the weather returns back to normal and when the news spreads that they have fully renovated.
