My apologies to Lee Ho Fook. I'll try to make the correction after I send this. Today we went to the correct restaurant and the food was perfectly prepared. We ordered fish balls with choi sum. Service was quick. We had to wait about 8 minutes for cake noodles but we didn't mine. Although it's a small place we felt welcome. It was clean and typical of restaurants in Chinatown. I cannot even remember how many years we have been coming to this place, it has to be over 40 years, back in the day, Mrs. Wong was the owner. The current owner took over just about 30 years ago. Their fish ball / fish cake look fun is their signature dishes. This is our go to place for 魚蛋粉. The restaurant is small and cozy, seats about 20 people. Since we know the owner for many years, when we dine at the restaurant, we talk story with the owner, so, we feel like home. My wife and I had been craving good Chinese food for a while, so after finishing my workday in town and getting the suggestion from my wife that Chinese sounded good for takeout dinner, I crossed into Chinatown and tried Lee Ho Fook for the first time. The first thing I saw when I walked in was the owner making dumplings by hand. That immediately gave me the feeling I was in the right place. Growing up I watched my own Mom make our version of dumplings, so seeing that kind of care and craftsmanship felt familiar. The owner was warm and very welcoming, and as each dish was completed she brought it out fresh from the kitchen, which gave me a chance to taste the food while it was still steaming. It was hot, but I could not stop myself from sampling it :) Everything I ordered was delicious and clearly made fresh. I'll be honest though, watching the dumplings being prepared right in front of me was a real highlight. I'm sure that some of you out there can relate to this. I also had the chance to meet owner's mother and another gentleman who I believe may have been family, which added to the welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant is small, but it did not feel rushed. We had a good time talking story while the food was being prepared. It was a challenge for me to drive home with all that food in the back of my car. They are similar to Lam's Kitchen, but their selection is a little bigger. I think Lam's kitchen is a little better, because they make fresh noodles daily. You may want to look at the menu and pictures of the dishes, before going here. This is not your typical Chinese restaurant with lemon/orange chicken, beef, broccoli, and fried rice. Lol! After a previous visit a couple of years ago to Chinatown favorite Lee Ho Fook (LHF), I walked away disappointed as the food quality and quantity declined where I walked away sad. This was a family favorite where we'd patronize here regularly. After seeing some food pics posted by Rod U. and Lyla D., both who I highly respect as they have high standards for Chinese food, I convinced the family to give them another try. Yesterday was spent running errands so appointments and deadlines where I planned an early lunch in between. I was glad LHF only had a table occupied and for those who know this business, the restaurant is small and there were 5 of us. My family allowed me to take the lead in ordering. I know my family's palate so it wasn't difficult to select the menu. I ordered with the new boss lady, who happens to be the niece of the original owner Wong-tai. We asked for iced water and hot tea and waited patiently as our food was being prepared. THE VERDICT: The food quality this round was much better than my previous visit and brought back memories of my younger days eating here. Majority of our dishes were executed well. Star of the show was the cake noodles. Indeed, due to inflation the portions are smaller but I strategically paid the surcharge for extra noodles. The cake noodles were still crisp on the bottom after the hot gravy was poured on top. I'm a huge fan of bone in chicken as the meat tastes better. Need to be careful of the bone shard when eating. We also got the combo beef brisket and beef tendon (surcharge for doing a combination) cake noodles. This dish was polished off quickly as family absolutely enjoyed the beef and cake noodles preparation. Highly recommended. Menu item #36: fish/pork ball in egg drop. Another classic dish of LHF. We were advised the recipe changed a little to be more health conscious as previously chunks of pork fat was used. The new chef omitted the fat component and the dish was still delicious. Favorite niece by default commented this dish brought back fond memories of her childhood as this was one of her favorites here. I decided to follow the table next to us by ordering pepper salt shrimp, which was absolutely delicious. The boss lady commented this is her personal favorite here. It was deep fried where the shells were crispy and the shrimp texture wasn't compromised. Loved the sliced jalapeños and garlic that was tossed in high heat for the wok hei flavor. We also got the won ton soup, which was good but we've had better. The disappointment was the beef chow funn (dry style). It lacked the flavor and texture of a highly skilled chef to toss look funn noodles on high heat. The house made chili oil is a must when eating food here. Add a little soy sauce with the chilies to enhance the food here. Service was above average as it was just a two person team. The boss lady was personable and served us while taking care the front of the house all by herself. Two other tables came in after we sat and the phone rang for a carry out order. Interior is just like how I remembered them in the 90's. It's somewhat dingy but the restaurant interior is kept clean and not well lit. Overall, a fantastic lunch at LHF where I'm already looking forward to my next visit. For sure I'll be getting the beef brisket, beef tendon, cake noodles and the salt pepper shrimp. I had a wearwolf-sized hankering for beef and noodles so my wife and I had to head to Lee Ho Fook. Auntie there is so nice. She set us up with a table and took our order. My wife had the tendon with noodles in soup. I had the stewed tenderloin on cake noodles. My wife enjoyed her soup but she has a small appetite. I tried some and I can see why people like it. After all the braised tendon is good for my wrinkles. My tenderloin on cake noodles was fantastic. When it was served, it was so huge I thought, okay I'll eat half. Then, okay I'll take home a third.
