We had been to Kapiolani Seafood Restaurant several times at its old location across from Ala Moana Mall, and it used to be a five-star place for us. The new location is only about a block away, with a much nicer, newer interior. Unfortunately, the food seems to have changed much more than the address We ordered four dishes: mochi rice, pork buns, siu mai, and chicken feet. Almost everything arrived cooler than it should have. The chicken feet and siu mai were warm rather than hot, while the pork buns were closer to cold. More importantly, it wasn't just a temperature problem. The chicken feet in particular tasted noticeably worse than before, lacking the flavors and spices we remembered. The mochi rice was the most normal of the four, but even that felt fairly unremarkable There was a table next to us that came in excited to have dimsum. And watching their reaction, they came to the same conclusion as us -- food was cold, and flavors were off. We went on a weekday, so it's possible the kitchen was different that day, but the drop in quality was hard to ignore. The restaurant wasn't busy, service was good, and prices seemed unchanged from our previous visits. Lunch in Honolulu, Hawaii... I asked my sister what she wanted to eat for her birthday: Dimsum! I suggested that we go to this new location of Kapiolani Seafood Restaurant. She agreed! The covered parking lot is free! Just follow the signs and park in the designated numbered stalls. Inside, it was crowded and noisy! I wrote our name on the list and got called quickly! My sister wrote our order on the menu: shrimp dumplings, seaweed roll, deep fried taro puffs, shrimp and chive dumplings, mochi rice, pork-filled deep fried mochi, and custard tarts. The dim sum here is always fresh since everything is made to order instead of being served from the traditional carts. The portions are also bigger than what you normally get at dim sum spots, and the flavor and quality are pretty decent. It definitely hits the spot when you're craving dim sum, although it is a bit on the pricey side. The service is okay. It appears that there is more parking for this restaurant, as there is a downstairs garage designated parking for Kapiolani Seafood Restaurant. 2. The new location appears to be more spacious, because when I dined at the old location I noticed there wasn't as much space between tables. 3. The new Kapiolani Seafood Restaurant location is less than a block away from the original location, so not hard to find. The day we took my dad here for dim sum, the food was fabulous (see pics), and service was great! No complaints here, that's for sure. We got a private room here and the food/ service was fantastic. The owner was very nice and let us stay way past closing. My brother took us to their new location on Amana street. They use to be by the central pacific bank parking lot on kapiolani Blvd. This place is nice clean and bigger I think. The downfall is that the elevator from their downstairs parking lot area was out of order. So we had to walk up the side ramp and climb about 6 steps to get in. How can handicapped people get in even though they said on their front door handicapped assistance inquiry inside. I did but I guess he didn't understand what I was talking about. He told me only 1 elevator might be down but I told him its out of order. ( I DONT KNOW). The food was good I guess to me nothing fancy that I haven't eaten before. Food (4 stars) + Steamed egg cream buns or custard baos were delicious and a kid favorite. Three and a half stars. They have moved from their previous location where MW used to be. Now they are across the street and nearby. The parking is downstairs or street parking. There are stairs to walk up but if you come from the parking I believe there is an elevator leading you to their restaurant floor. There are many tables and lots to see when you enter the restaurant. It's well lit for elderly but a bit loud when completely full. I believe this might be an issue for elder people. The servers are not always so friendly but like most dim sum places you go for the food, not the personality. The food was decent and fresh. My favorite were the green beans with meat and vegetables. They moved across the street from their old location, so we decided to check it out. My mom, hubby, son and I had breakfast here on a Saturday morning and it was packed. The restaurant wasn't small, but there were just a lot of people. We waited about 20 minutes for a table. What's great about this place is that they have these paper menus. You can check off what you want while you're waiting. As soon as you get seated, you can just hand over the menu to the server and it makes the process a lot faster. It didn't take that long for us to get our food. We ordered a lot of items. We got the shrimp dumplings, black bean spareribs, beef look fun, Shanghai pork dumplings, steamed salted egg custard buns, pan fried turnip cake, seafood bean curd roll, sesame balls with red bean, taro puffs and chicken dumplings. Everything was on point except the sesame balls with red bean. They were small and the breading was thick. Pass on those. My two favorites were the black bean spareribs and the salted egg custard buns. I love salted duck eggs. The prices here are a bit more than the average dim sum spot. Went here for the second time with a friend and had a great experience. Dim sum here is delicious and it wasn't too crowded so we got a seat without a reservation. Street parking tho I did see a sign on the way in about a lot where you can park. We got 4 items and couldn't finish it all but it was really delicious. Pork shrimp siu mai, crispy tofu wrapped seafood bundle, char siu look funn and steamed sticky rice with lap cheong. SO GOOD. Hot tea and water constantly refilled. KSR moved fr its long time location on Kapiolani to Amanu. It was time to hit up this old skool spot for dim sum. We ordered pork hash, manapua, har gow, spring rolls, pickled cucumbers ($12.95) and a platter of char siu & duck. The dim sum was about $8/each, which I thought was very reasonable. My buddy really likes siao mai, and he said KSR has the best ones out of the places I have brought him to in HNL. On the other hand, the manapua was just okay: The ratio of meat to bao was low. I took char siu fr the platter and added it to the bao. We might have been better off skipping the baos and ordering a rice or noodle plate. The har gow and spring rolls were pretty good. The rolls arrived piping hot, and the har gow had a nice texture in the wrapper. Fourthly, the cucumber was fresh & crunchy, and had lots of garlic. I ate some with the char siu to cut thru the fat. Lastly, the char siu & duck platter was very good. They do a good job of putting some char on the bbq pork. The duck was tasty, but there were a couple of bony pieces. Regarding the ambiance, its big in here. Although they don't use carts, the aisles are wide. The servers were friendly & warm. I would def return for dim sum, but I also want to come for dinner. I used to enjoy going to Chinatown for dim sum; however, due to the area's increased homeless and unsafe atmosphere, it was a relief to eat at Kapiolani Seafood and although pricier, the dim sum was just as good or better, with the location in a safer area and with an upscale ambiance. And with the move to Amana St, I was excited to see one of the female supervisors from the Chinatown dim sum restaurant who now works at Kapiolani Seafood! Hubby and I would regularly have dim sum lunch on weekdays, when it was less crowded than on weekends. Dim sum made a perfect lunch, as we chose what we wanted to eat, and stopped when we were full. Our typical dim sum choices were: siu mai, har gow, steamed spareribs with black bean sauce, egg custard tarts, fried taro, hom sui gok, chicken feet, fried bean curd with sauce, shrimp look fun. The main dining area in the new location appears to be smaller than the previous location, with tables set closer. But the new location is more upscale and modern in décor and ambiance. The interior is clean with elegant light fixtures. Each table had a fresh orchid plant as a centerpiece. It also has 3 private rooms for parties. Hours of operation are Mon to Fri 9:00a to 9:00p, Sat/Sun 8:30a to 9:00p. Free parking is available in the basement and outside adjacent parking lot. We always here with our family and friends and they always have the best service. The food is great but sometimes the good items run out quickly so order ahead! The staff do their jobs and take customer complaints seriously and asked to verify that a dog two tables down from the complaining customer is a service animal. (Even though the dog didn't do anything) That's all they can do under the ADA, they can only ask two questions to the dog owner. The customers who complained ended up leaving the restaurant without ordering anything and wrote a 1 star review here. As a witness the staff did the right thing and acted professionally. read more

My favorites are their chicken feet and beef look funn. However, this new location unfortunately doesn't have the same atmosphere. just had to check out this place after its relocation. Space-wise, it's about the same size as its previous location. Parking, however, is now much more challenging, although the old location wasn't exactly convenient either. My first impression was that things felt a bit chaotic, likely because some of the waitstaff--perhaps new employees--were still unfamiliar with the new setup and procedures. As a result, service was noticeably slow. The food is still quite good, but the prices are now significantly higher than those of many competitors. We ordered their "Chicken with green beans" (note naming order) even though I'd hesitated over the price - $22. Now I know I'm at a restaurant, and not the grocery store, but I also know how much chicken and green beans I would get if I spent $22 and just threw them in the wok at home with some onion and chili oil. I went for it anyway though because I wanted the protein. Sadly the protein is not what I got. This is a lot of bean and a very little chicken for $22. The worst part was it wasn't even good. To kick off the new year, my family and I decided to give Kapiolani Seafood Restaurant a try. Dim sum is always my pick, and I really wanted this to be a better experience because I was genuinely looking forward to it - their photos and reviews looked great. Unfortunately, our visit fell a bit short. We went on the first Sunday in January, so the restaurant was understandably packed with families who had the same idea. We arrived around 10:45am and were lucky to snag the very last parking stall. Note that several stalls are designated for the Thai restaurant next door, so be mindful of where you park. Anyway, our party of 5 waited 45 mins for a table. I did call ahead hoping to make a reservation, but was informed that reservations are only accepted for parties of 5 or more after 5pm. Totally understandable for a spot that primarily serves dim sum during lunch hours. The gentleman who answered the phone was very kind and explained everything clearly and pleasantly - which I really appreciated, especially given how rushed or abrupt some dim sum restaurant interactions can be. In fact, several staff members were friendly, and that's largely why I'm giving this place 3 stars. That said... the food just wasn't our flavor. Nothing was outright "bad," but it didn't align with what we're accustomed to. Some of the wrappers were undercooked, the egg tart was straight up flavorless, and the baked char siu bun was 90% bread. Huge bummer! It's possible the kitchen was rushing due to the crowd, but either way, we didn't enjoy everything we ordered. Another surprise was the pricing. We considered ordering a crab dish similar to the "golden crab" (Chinese-style egg yolk preparation) that we often get at a nearby restaurant for about $50 on the high end. Here, we were told the price was $85 for one small Dungeness crab. Communication around this was a bit challenging, tho thankfully my daughter's bf speaks fluent Mandarin and was able to clarify. I can see this restaurant having exceptional moments when everything aligns - quality food, good service, and the right timing. Unfortunately, Sunday wasn't it for us. Came on a Monday afternoon because we were craving dim sum, and this restaurant was on the way to Costco. The dim sum was above average overall (couldn't give 3.5 stars on app), with a few standouts. The Jook was tasty with lots of meat (chicken) mixed in. The Chinese broccoli was also great but a bit too oily. The pan-fried shrimp & chives were also very good. Finally, the pan-fried turnip cake was also tasty with good texture, almost like fish. I recently visited the new location and had mixed feelings about the experience. The space is much smaller than I expected, and it gets very noisy, making it difficult to have a conversation during the meal. The service was also a bit disappointing. The waitresses weren't particularly friendly or welcoming, which took away from the overall dining experience. That said, the food was really good and definitely the highlight of the visit. On this rainy day, we were so grateful that the restaurant had an underground parking lot with an elevator that takes you up to the restaurant level. The restaurant is bright and modern in décor. We checked out the menu and picked out some dishes. Bean curd rolls - we started off with this dim sum favorite as an appetizer Fish filet in black bean - Large pieces of filet. Very tasty. On choy with bean curd Braised pork belly with preserved vegetables Dried scallops with egg whites fried rice Garlic steamed shrimp over vermicelli - never had this dish. This restaurant is ok, decent food, but the service suck. The host sat us down and we've already decided what to order. We've waited for about 15 minutes and no one came over to give us tea or water. I had to wave my hands in the air to get their attention. After that the food came out fast because it wasn't that busy to start with. They had 5 wait staff and I don't know why it took them that long to come get our order. They need more training and coordination in providing better faster service. I don't even think I can count on my hand(s) how much times I have been here. The food almost never misses and always hit the spot. Service is decently quick and but sometimes not the best. I feel like when they aren't as busy, they seem to want to rush to get everyone out towards the end of the night. This means a lot of hovering and even ignoring while they closed up. I would say again, that the space is large and everything is clean and well kept. Please look at my previous reviews for specific dimsum recommendations & ratings, but I just usually order the same ones over and over again. This time the new thing we tried was the fried intestine. If you like intestine, I think you would LOVE this. Sometimes intestines are not the most appealing to me because of the chewy and rubbery texture. This on the other hand, was crispy on the outside and fatty/soft on the inside. It was PERFECT and DELICIOUS if you like that type of stuff. read more

Very disappointing experience. The food was not good at all. The shrimp rice rolls were poorly presented and looked like they were just thrown together. The soup dumplings were completely dry with almost no soup inside. The egg tarts were only lukewarm instead of being served hot. On top of that, there was basically no service during our meal. We actually drove about 25 miles to try this place after seeing all the good reviews. First time here! We ordered quite a few dishes: the beef tripe was a bit rubbery for our liking, and my mom was craving chicken feet but said she preferred the ones from other dim sum spots in Chinatown. The stir-fried look fun also lacked flavor and was a little chewy. We tried the crispy green onion cake too, but my family wasn't too impressed. On the positive side, the baked pork buns were really good! We also enjoyed our usual go-to dim sum items ...pork hash, shrimp dumplings, and spare ribs . Those definitely hit the spot. Maybe we just picked the wrong items to try this time. Service was quick, and the staff were friendly and attentive. I also noticed they had a BYOB sign, which is nice. Lots of parking and there's a restroom available too. Overall, not bad, I might give it another shot and try some different dishes next time! read more

***4.75 STARS*** Finally got my cherry popped. You see, Kapiolani Seafood Restaurant (KSR) has been under my radar since they opened in September 2022 in the spot previously occupied by MW Restaurant. They were the new kid on the block which had the Chinese community buzzing as the go to place for dim sum and Chinese food. Prior to coming here for dim sum this past State holiday, I've been to their sister restaurant Honolulu Seafood Restaurant (HSR) on Alakea St, which took over previously well known restaurants of The Mandalay and Yong Sing Restaurant. I was impressed with HSR on 2 visits with family where the bar was set high. Was so excited to finally try KSR. Met up with the whole family before favorite nephew by default started work. Was advised they don't take early reservations but because I've heard the restaurant isn't that large and fills up quickly, I arrived early before the agreed time to secure a table. It was empty when I arrived bit shortly after, people started to shuffle in. Impressive. I used the waiting time to dissect the menu and checked out the food gallery on Yelp. I immediately noticed that the menu changed slightly as abalone sticky rice in lotus leaf has been replaced by chicken and you get 2 smaller bundles rather than 1 large one. I took liberty in ordering and asked my family what they wanted. To no surprise, I ordered a storm where our lazy Susan was soon filled and multiple baskets were piled high. Star of the meal was not dim sum but crowd favorite was the beef chow funn dry style, which is served from 1030am. Had great wok hei and noticed sliced red onion was used. Amazing execution. Highly recommended. Other standouts were pan fried shrimp and chives dumplings, deep fried shrimp balls, crispy look funn roll, seafood tofu skin rolls, siu mai, har gao and steamed book tripe. Service was above average for a Chinese restaurant. Not all staff spoke English nor Cantonese so we had a little difficulty speaking Mandarin. Restaurant was clean but a little tacky with Christmas lights decorated in August. Overall, a great brunch with family at KSR where I yearn for a return visit. This time I'd like to dine with family to try their entrees. Very promising and KSR lived up to its respectable reputation in the Chinese community. read more
