We haven't been back here since 2017 when we didn't have a good experience, waited over an hour for dinner and when we got in they said that they had run out of rice! Lunch was good. Hubby had the double butterfish and I had butterfish and tempura. Both good. But after tipping lunch was $103.00. I think that is high for lunch, even in Honolulu. It saddens me that eating out has become so expensive everywhere so that taking the family out for a meal is a major investment. All I know is it didn't live up to the reviews We had reservations for 6:30 and were seated right away and that's when the good service ended. No wait. That ended after we ordered and our food was bought to us (which for a busy night, the food did come pretty quick). I will admit I do probably drink more water than the usual diner does. That's fine however it wasn't until the person I was dining with had to literally tap a server on the shoulder (after waiting about 7 minutes to get checked on) that I finally got my water refilled. At first I thought maybe they weren't as attentive due to how busy it was. Maybe it was because we didn't look Japanese enough. May it have been because we were homosexuals? Probably not but who knows. I wasn't gonna let it bother me until I saw how attentive they were to the family of five sitting fnext to us. They were already seated and had just gotten their food. Every so often (maybe every 4-5 minutes?) they were asked if everything was ok. One of the diners has a couple of beers. I should have had one. Maybe this review wouldn't be so scathing. A family of five who were as dark if not darker than us, more boisterous than us and no shade weren't dressed as nice as us (in their defense we had just come from work and they probably had the day off/retired). I only mention those things as this type of establishment seemed to be judgy over who walks thru their doors. The food came. It was good but not worth the price we paid. Miso soup too salty tho and skimpy on the tofu. Save yourself the money and just go genki down a couple stores down. So disappointed. Rokkaku Hamakatsu is such a beautiful, aesthetic, and calming place to dine at! The environment is very peaceful, the decorations and atmosphere seem very thoughtful, and I am always satisfied with my experience when I visit. The tonkatsu is always made to absolute perfection and is so crunchy. The flavor and texture is just on another level, and the flavor of everything in the set is just perfect. Also, getting to crush the sesame seeds for your katsu is a very fun and therapeutic experience. The texture of the tofu and noodles are always so refreshing, and you can just tell how fresh they are. The salad is always great too, and the different sources of crunch and the dressing all come together so well. I don't think I have photos of the ice cream, but I have tried their black sesame flavor, and the texture was amazing! The ice cream was so smooth, and the flavor of the black sesame was perfectly balanced. The staff is always so friendly here, and they are very attentive and are willing to make slight changes to dishes like their udon for picky eaters like me who like things plain. The staff constantly check on us, and genuinely seem like they enjoy helping customers. This is our second time here. They accommodated us with a baby stroller! Thank you. My husband and I ordered the Berkshire Pork Fillet Cutlet and added a set meal that comes with rice, miso soup and pickled vegetables. We really enjoyed it, they were very delicious. I used to come to this restaurant at least monthly when I lived here back in 2017. Unsure if it was just this one situation, but the level of quality in service and food has significantly degrated. Unsure if it's new management or simply new employees since then, but the experience overall was mediocre at best and enough to remove this restaurant from my favorite tonkatsu spot in hawaii. Service definitely made my group feel rushed as if they wanted to quickly flip our table to get the next group in. I was dining with some seniors and one of them made a complaint about the quality of the butter fish to where it was simply disregarded with the statement that they marinate the fish overnight which should be sufficient (anyone who cooks miso butter fish knows this is not sufficient). The food I ordered was a mixed tonkatsu meal. The batter overall didn't feel as flaky as it used to before and the meat was chewy and rubbery in areas giving the impression of either chewing or tendon or being overcooked. Went here for lunch with a few colleagues. The ambiance is nice, relatively quiet. Service is good and prompt. The food options were good, something for most everyone without being a very large menu. I opted for the mix tonkatsu, which included pork loin cutlet, pork fillet cutlet, Holland cutlet, and fried shrimp. I love variety so enjoyed this. Holland cutlet is pork with cheese in the middle. My friend and I both got noodles with 2 hand rolls (choice of salmon, hamachi, tuna, or unagi) set for $26. She chose hot udon and I chose hot soba. The temaki were delicious with generous portions of hamachi. Our meals came with a simple but delicious green salad topped with tiny crunchy balls and a dressing that made it perfect! We were quite full at the end and my friend only ate half her noodles. We got to chatting with our neighbor who got a tonkatsu (apparently what they're known for) and salmon combination. I ended up here craving a tonkatsu dish. It surely didn't disappoint. I ordered the 2 item combination and asked for the better tonkatsu. It's not the best compared to Tonkatsu Tamafuji but it's convenient because it is easier to get into since it's located at Ala Moana mall (same level as Longs). Ambiance is a little more on the dimmer side and has multiple tables with a bar area and at the back of the restaurant, there is a limited seating area where you can remove your shoes and sit on a cushioned seating. Great Tonkatsu, But Poor Service and an Unwelcome Surprise We ate at Rokkaku Hamakatsu during the dinner rush and waited about 40 minutes to be seated--understandable, since we didn't have a reservation. The bigger issue was the lack of greeting when we walked in. We stood there waiting with no acknowledgment for several minutes. One server made eye contact but didn't say a word. Eventually, the second server came over and helped us. The food itself was really good--crispy, fresh, and exactly what you'd expect from a proper tonkatsu restaurant. Classy place - nice ambiance, good service and delightful food. Dined here during the time I had visited my Dad in mid January 2025. The last time that I had some legit tonkatsu was at Tamafuji during Aug. 2024, but that place is impossible to get a reservation, so you just have to show up when they open at 4 or 5pm, wait around for a spot and chance it. This spot is open all afternoon. My Dad told me about Rokkaku Hamakatsu for a while and said their tonkatsu is pretty similar to Tamafuji and I agree it's very close - but not quite at the same level. Rokkaku's tonkatsu doesn't come in different sizes and although it looks like a decent size when it's first served to you, upon closer inspection, it's a bit smaller and thinner. Still, their tonkatsu is juicy and tender - definitely, they're using some high quality Berkshire pork, here. Similar to Tamafuji, you grind your own sesame seeds. Unlike Tamafuji, though, you do have to pay extra here for rice and miso soup, and there are no pickled veggies / ume / gobo served on the side. All things considered, I could see how Tamafuji is better in terms of the overall value and quality of the food. However, if you're not wanting to wait around for who knows how long at Tamafuji and want a classier place to dine at and one that's more conveniently located with much more parking, then Rokkaku Hamakatsu is a better choice. I'd for sure return to dine at this spot. It all depends what you want, are willing to put up with, and wait for. read more

Coming back for a second time, I can see a lot more Japanese folk than tourists enjoying this not-so-secret "hidden gem" at the ala moana mall. There were a few ladies taking turn to serve us and only one of them was very helpful and friendly. I think part of it was because I showed up as the 4th person for a 3 person reservation. I didn't bother to change it after knowing another person would join because I knew they're gonna give us a 4 person table anyway, and I happened to be the last person of the group who walked in. When I sat down, I could only see the surprising faces and a comment of "oh the reservation is for 3 people." Really, does it matter? There's an empty seat at the table for me. I didn't think it would matter that's why I didn't call to update the booking. After I sat down, no one bothered to give me an extra set of utensils. I was waiting and finally had to flag someone down for it. Food was not bad but it wasn't the best. It's OK. Their tempura wasn't crispy enough and I'm just not a fan of having with the sauce on it already. The rice was OK, could use better quality rice. The ikura was delicious, but again the rice had soy sauce in it already and it didn't taste like how sushi rice should. The agedashi tofu was OK and with the egg it seemed like they tried to take it up a notch but the whole thing lacked umami flavor. My favorite was the hamachi sashimi, but besides the plating, I could get similar quality at Marukai. They're all imported from Japan anyway. I was very impressed the first time I came here, with the food and service, but not quite this time. Wow this place is incredible! A hidden gem for sure! We checked this out on a weekday afternoon and the atmosphere was quiet and cozy. Staff is very attentive and thorough, they take very good care of you here. I was blown away by the level of effort and care put into our food, and how high quality and generously portioned everything was. The sashimi was very fresh, tofu was a large portion with lots of extra garnishings and yummy additions to go with it. My butterfish was so far the best butterfish I have had on the island. I would say that Rokkaku is one of the few places you can trust that ordering literally any menu item is guaranteed to be oishi. Sometimes I may feel you pay a lot for tonkatsu, but I had some at other places and those thick pork loin katsu was just as much but so delicious! I realized her $60 Shokadou set was amazing and she even was happy with her meal at a place she hasn't been to before. She didn't realized this place existed before. The small mortar to grind sesame reminded me of Japan. Rice, Miso soup, and small pickles came with Tonkatsu, it was a very crispy, delicious, and authentic Japanese Tonkatsu. Food: We got the loin and chicken katsu. On its own, the loin can be very fatty. However, when mixed with the sauce, cabbage and good quality rice was amazing. Everything works so well together. Recommended this place to my sister from Kaua'i and her hula sister. They came twice during a 4-day visit! My wife and I also came here twice during our longer stay.
