Japanese BBQ Yoshi has been on my list of must tries for a few years. My bestie recommended it years ago and for some unknown reason I just didn't go. The restaurant is located off Young street and it's really set back from the street. The parking lot is small but we got the last stall. Inside is also small with a few tables. Our reservation was for 6:15p and we were greeted and seated immediately. Since it's known for Wagyu we ended up splurging on the Wagyu set. Totally worth it in my opinion. To start we had banchan, soup, salad, and Wagyu buns. It was decent but not noteworthy. They start you off with a choice of pork belly or tongue. We opted for the tongue and it was pretty tasty. Then the showstopper Wagyu comes out. There were so many different cuts I couldn't remember them all. But what I do know is that it was all superb! My friend said she forgot just how fantastic the meat quality was at this restaurant. With each cut of meat we cooked, it was tough to pick my favorite. It was all so yummy! We were too full to have the cold udon so they graciously packed it up with our leftovers. Yes, leftovers because we were so full of fatty delicious Wagyu. The dessert was a calamansi sorbet on yuzu jelly. Perfect ending to a fabulous meal! Service was friendly and efficient. Only two servers but they knew exactly what to do and we never felt ignored. I've been to BBQ Yoshi about 5-6 times now, and it's definitely one of those places I keep coming back to when I'm craving good yakiniku. One dish I always remember is the fat garlic fried rice super flavorful and rich, and it pairs perfectly with the grilled meats. Another standout is the butter scallop, which comes in a small pot that you let sit on the grill while the butter slowly melts into the scallop. Simple but so good. They also give you three different dipping sauces, which is nice because you can switch up the flavors depending on the cut of meat. The meat quality itself is 10/10 tender, juicy, and exactly what you want when you're going out for yakiniku. The only thing I didn't really care for was the bao, which didn't stand out compared to the rest of the set menu. Decided to try this place on a whim. We were hungry and I heard of only good things about this place. We were surprised that we could get a reservation for 7:30 p.m. on a Saturday night minutes before arriving as we were driving around aimlessly looking for a place to eat. The ambiance was nice and inviting and it felt like a neighborhood eatery and bar. Service was outstanding as the servers were very helpful and friendly. As soon as we opened the menu, we were a little shocked at the prices, however, given the quality of the meats, we decided to bite the bullet and try the Wagyu dinner for 2 at $300. We did have our 12 year old son with us and the waiter assured us that the amount of food would be enough for all of us. He wasn't kidding, in fact we had some leftovers of the wagyu fried rice and the cold noodles were wrapped up for us since we couldn't finish it. The wagyu meat just melted in our mouths. Such a wonderful treat as it was a much better meal for my wife who earlier in the week was treated to someplace else for her Birthday dinner. This place far exceeded her Birthday dinner. A few parking spaces, however, we ended up parking on the street. Japanese BBQ Yoshi is a spot that can be found a ways away from the Waikiki downtown area, that you will definitely need a car to get here. While. It that far away, it's more than 10 minutes driving there, so not nearby. As the name implies, it's a Japanese BBQ place at Yoshi's, so when you come here there are several BBQ set options to choose from with various cuts of meats, or you can order separate things a la carte. Of course the best value will be the set menu items. This is also a fairly local place, as it's located in an odd area compared to Waikiki metropolitan area itself. It does have its own parking lot that it shares with another business next door, but it's closed during the night. If you want a quieter, less crowded experience for Japanese BBQ, Yoshi's is the place. For the price, definitely want to be mindful of that because they are...very pricey, even for Hawaii. Obviously, the you can get some good quality meats here, and similar to Japan, they'll show you the certificates of the quality too to confirm your cuts. The food here overall was great. I didn't have any particular complaints about the food, though I do wish some of the cuts were thicker with the meat. They were so thing, that it was difficult to get any type of char on them without worrying about overcooking them. I've had some very high quality meats in Japan before, and even there they don't cut meats this thinly mainly because of this reason. It really took away from the actual flavors on the meat as a result. The meats were great, but with the recommended cooking times, it really left nothing for the imagination when cooking it, and it wasn't as good as it could have been with more char on it. But I digress. It's more of a minor gripe more than anything. If you have the time, interested in Japanese BBQ, and don't mind spending a bit more, Yoshi's is where you want to be. Plus 2/3 had very large chunks of solid fat at the bottom nobody wanted to eat. Definitely should have been trimmed off for the price. We said we came for the happy hour and he delightedly took our order once we decided and told us the portion size so that we don't over order is very much appreciated and started with Wagyu Truffle Fries, Yaki Udon and Beef Bao Buns each coming out very fast first was the fries as they were skinny and bursted with yummy truffle though not sure where the wagyu comes from, Yaki Udon had chunks of pork belly and was stir fried in tonkatsu type of sauce and topped with a single onsen tamago was my favorite and the bao buns came in a perfect pair loaded with yummy simmered beef, sprouts and pickled carrots and daikon. We then ordered the Thin Cut Washugyu Ribeye...why not! I drove by this place many many times and finally we got to try it today. They have their own private parking lot, but there is only a few parkings, there are also street parkings in the area. When we got there, there were only two other customers , not super busy. I heard about this place is pretty pricey so mentally I am already prepared for it. Yes, it is pretty pricy, 10 pieces of pork belly for $27. I just cannot see any difference between a cheaper pork belly compare to a more expensive pork belly. We also ordered cow tongue and Kalbi. I must say the meat (beef) quality is pretty good. It the portion is small. The presentation of the meat is very well as you can see in my photo. We also ordered the garlic kimchee fried rice and the chicken Karaage. The fried rice is pretty good size and we cannot finish. I must say the service is really really good. Everybody is smiling. They come to check on us several times during dinner. They also help us packed the left over rice to take home and put it in a paper bag with a chopstick and napkin inside. They also provide disposable apron for you to cover your clothes and I think the ventilation is pretty good because we don't smell like barbecue at the end. I always have a great time, so I'm not scoring each individual dish as I usually do. The world food duo stopped in at Japanese B.B.Q. Yoshi on Young St, across from the First Interstate Bank building (yes, it's not FIB anymore but I'm old). There is limited parking (16 stalls) but we were the first to arrive so I got the stall closest to the building and cheated over into the smoking area to distance myself from the next stall. We started with a bottle of 2019 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon ($105), a steal as it's $85 from the winery. I was contemplating the Wagyu Set Menu ($300) but our server said it's a lot of food and one course has shellfish so he recommended the Build Your Own Set option. We opted for two half orders of Yoshi Salad, two bowls of Wagyu Fat Fried Rice and the Steak Set, a combination of Wagyu ribeye, Washugyu ribeye and U.S. Skirt Steak. We added an order of tongue. Alas, they only had the regular tongue. The wine was stellar as Chateau Montelena wines consistently are; full of fruit, complex flavors without much tannin, surprising for a young wine. The salad was fine, I'd expected something more from the Yuzu-based dressing. The meat was nicely arranged on a platter and the bowls of fried rice came at the same time. I didn't partake of the fried rice as I'm on a no carb diet. Yes, my 3 glasses of wine contributed 375 calories and 12 grams of carbs. Yours truly cannot forsake wine with a fine meal. I handled the cooking chores ... the pieces of meat were thinly cut so it didn't take very long as we prefer our meat medium rare. There were three sauces, one was sesame oil based (we didn't like it); the other two (I couldn't remember what they were but both) were delicious. I cooked the meats from least to most expensive. The U.S. skirt steak was tender and flavorful ... that was the surprise of the evening for me. The Washugyu ribeye was excellent and the Wagyu ribeye; what can we say ... It was "to die for". I prepare A5 at home using a sous vide then a torch; the meat from BBQ Yoshi was fabulous. The sole disappointment was the tongue; it was not very flavorful and it was chewy. I think tongue needs to be pre-cooked and cut slightly thicker so the diner can savor its unique flavor. We ended our meal by splitting the dessert, a coffee jelly (for me) and green tea ice cream (for my tablemate). Final thoughts? I think Japanese B.B.Q. Yoshi competes well with H* N* D* in Kaka'ako. They offer similar menus at about the same price point. We love both places ... recommended! 4.75 stars. read more

I don't write many Yelp reviews, but I had to review Japanese BBQ Yoshi because it was the best restaurant experience I've had in Hawai'i in quite a while. First off, the boring stuff. Do you need a reservation? We had a 5:00 reservation for our visit on NYE but the restaurant was only about half full. However, it's not a huge place so a reservation is probably recommended. Also, their parking lot only has 9 marked spaces, so plan accordingly. There were three of us, so we split the Wagyu Set Menu (which is intended for two people) and added on a Washugyu Sampler Plate. That was more than enough food for us. The starters included assorted kim chee, a green salad, nori, beef bao buns, soup, and a plate that included potato salad, seasoned broccoli fllorets, and pickled vegetables. Everything was light, fresh, tasty, and not too heavy (which is important, considering the amount of meat we had coming). We opted for the beef tongue over the pork belly and the miso scallops over the garlic shrimp. Both were excellent choices and the beef tongue was SUPER tender, while the scallops were flavorful with a perfect texture - not mushy or rubbery. Side note on the grill: you grill your own meat, so you have to carefully balance cooking and eating. Wagyu and Washugyu cook very quickly due to the high fat content, and the thinner cuts will cook extremely fast - the staff advised that thin cuts should be seared for only about 8-10 seconds per side. Tip: don't put too many pieces on the grill at once, otherwise you risk overcooking your beautiful Wagyu! Also, the grill is nonstick so it doesn't have to be replaced; the staff will occasionally wipe it down to keep it clean. The meat itself was amazing! Super tender and melts in your mouth like butter. The cuts arrived lightly seasoned and three dipping sauces were provided. My favorite was the sesame oil based sauce with salt and pepper. There was also a thin cut of Wagyu where, per staff instructions, you grill it, add green onions and garlic chips, then roll it up and pop it in your mouth. Soooo 'ono! There was so much food that we completely skipped the noodle course, which was cold soba. The staff packed it up for us to take home. The fact that they were prepared to pack up the soba tells you that they know how much food they give you! Finally... dessert. Two desserts are provided with the set menu so we went with sorbet and the S'mores cheesecake. The cheesecake was very heavy and very rich, but I can't resist chocolate and house-made desserts! Along with the food, what really made this an unforgettable experience was the staff. All the staff were friendly and super helpful. They were attentive, checking on us every so often and making sure that our water and tea were full. Plus they also provided clear explanations and instructions for cooking so that everything came out delicious! Japanese BBQ Yoshi is not cheap, but it is most definitely worth the money. While we were there, several of the other guests were greeted warmly and recognized as repeat customers - always a good sign about an establishment. The wagyu beef quality here is AMAZEBALLS!! So thankful to my SO for discovering this gem. The wagyu sashimi pieces were so fresh and melted in mouth, so so savory! The beef tongue was excellent! Thin and love the lemon light tingle to the flavor. The wagyu rice is ADDICTION. The umami sensation of just forgetting I need to hold back on carbs. The wagyu mix platter is great for trying out the different cuts. Pricey but the quality of the meat here is well worth for a special occasion. read more

This place was absolutely amazing! We ordered one of their set and it was enough for four people. We got the wagyu fat fried rice and kimchi fried rice. It was super delicious and was very fluffy. Their wagyu meats was perfectly salted and tasted very smooth and feels like it's melting in your mouth. The service here was also great and our server was super attentive. I've been wanting to try this place forever, and finally did. The reservation was made 2 or 3 days prior so we had no choice to be seated right when they opened for a table rather than the bar. We got the most expensive course, and it was delicious but too fatty for us. It definitely was exquisite but we can only eat so much fat right? Haha. Small parking lot in a back road, the maps on Yelp takes us to the other side and we were so lost and confused for a while. The wagyu nigiri was expensive; but it was SOOOO GOOD!!!!! Our favorite of the meal for sure even though it was the starter! So soft, so delicious, unbelievable. The soup, buns, and scallops were all nothing special, if anything very underwhelming. The beef, however, so marbled. Beautiful and amazing. But our stomachs couldn't take all the fat so we took the udon at the end to go. The desserts we chose were the watermelon sorbet and the Kona coffee ice cream on coffee jelly. I should've gotten just the coffee ice cream, the jelly was not to my taste at all. Very strong. Good food as always, and they made the meat cake for the birthdays. It was quite empty when we went for happy hour. The server was a guy I didn't know before, but he was nice enough. The party right next to us was loud, so I wish they spread us all out a bit more since there were only 3 parties in the whole place. read more
