燻蹄 Cold Marinated Pig Trotter (Appetizer)
    Lyla D.

Over the past 14 or maybe 15 years, we've often passed by the Char Siu House while in Chinatown, en route to our favorite "Pork Heaven" or Nam Fong Chinese Meat Roasters, until Nam Fong shuttered its doors in late 2023 when its owner retired. Although we were loyal customers to Nam Fong during its 30-year run, we'd often see local food tour groups with foreign visitors or crowds of residents ordering Cantonese-style roasted meats or lunch plates at the New Char Siu House, yet we never bothered to try them. However, while recently scrolling through Yelp Friends' check-ins, I became aware of Elite Paul C's photos at New Char Siu House featuring one of my favorite Chinese dim sum appetizers, 熏蹄 or Marinated Chilled Pig's Trotter (pettitoe). I routinely got the chilled pig's trotter at Nam Fong, but since their closure, I have settled for only getting this item at local dim sum houses. So, I excitedly showed Paul's food photos to my husband, and he rushed to Chinatown since he also had cravings for this chilled appetizer, Chinese BBQ pork, and crisp-skin Cantonese-style roasted pork. We were lucky to find an open metered parking stall across the street from the New Char Siu House. Since I was just one week from knee replacement surgery, I waited in the car while my husband went in to order from this Chinese roastery. My husband returned to our car with three containers containing half a pound of chilled pig's trotter, Chinese BBQ pork, and Cantonese-style roasted pork. He also mentioned that the person who took his order confirmed his choice of fat or lean or combination cuts of meat, as the butcher selected the glistening BBQ and roasted pork pieces from the meat hooks. They didn't completely seal the containers since the BBQ pork and roasted pork were still fresh and hot from their ovens. Rushing home where I had already cooked a pot of white rice, we broke into the containers. We were impressed by the flavors, fat-to-lean ratio, and tenderness of the BBQ pork and crisp-skinned roasted pork. Also, the chilled pig's trotter came with a condiment cup filled with a vinegar and sugar dipping sauce. The thinly sliced chilled pig's trotter had a slight Chinese liquor flavor and had its signature gelatinous, springy, yet tender texture. Although we thought we had found another new favorite Chinese meat roastery since Nam Fong's closure, we're adding the New Char Siu House to our rotation.

Char Siu/Roast Pork Plate - Regular

I got a late start this morning and missed picking up breakfast as I usually do. Plan B was to order corned beef hash and eggs through my free Grubhub+ membership. But after a series of delivery delays and no driver being assigned, I tried to cancel. Grubhub said it was too late (the food had already been prepared) but gave me a $7 credit. I called the restaurant directly, and they were kind enough to cancel the order on their end. At that point, I decided to try Uber Eats. I signed up and noticed a good range of restaurants, including some I hadn't come across on Grubhub. Wanting a change, I ordered the Char Siu/Roast Pork Plate from New Char Siu House (I later found out they're also available on Grubhub). Everything went smoothly from order to delivery. The food? Very good. The roast pork was crispy in just the right places, and the char siu was tasty and not overly sweet. Portions were adequate -- enough that it lasted me past lunchtime and beyond. This was a first-time delivery order, so I'm holding back a star for now. But based on this experience, I'd be happy to order from them again.

Husband surprise me tonight bought roast duck and roast pork for dinna. I must say it was tasty. The roast pork had a good taste but the skin wasnt crispy because bought it early during the day. The roast duck was tasty and of course I took the meaty parts. I ask him if had char siu he said yes but never thought about buying it. Would go back again snd maybe try their char siu.

I needed to pick up some Chinese barbecue early this morning, and New Char Siu House came up as one of the top spots on Yelp. It's conveniently located, and I was lucky enough to snag a parking spot right in front. I ordered a whole duck, roast pork, pig's feet, and pig's ear. The staff were incredibly friendly and while helping me with my order, making the experience very pleasant. Although I didn't eat the food until an hour later, the quality was still apparent. Everything was tasty, flavorful, and well made. Clearly showcasing their expertise in Chinese barbecue. If you're looking for a new spot to grab delicious Chinese barbecue, New Char Siu House is an excellent choice.

Roast Duck / Char Siu Plate (( Large )) $16

FOOD / PRICE -- The food is great and I love the prices even more! A mini bento plate starts as low as $10 and a large bento plate is about $14-$16! I'm blown away by the price of this place. I really enjoyed my roast duck + char siu plate too. SERVICE -- They are quick, friendly, and efficient. I was still digging in my wallet to count my cash to pay and my bento is already packed up in a box that's wrapped in a plastic bag. They give you an option of a fork or chopsticks. I work for an ESL immersion school and took a foreign high school student to Chinatown for a field trip. The cashier was really friendly and patient to my student, so I was appreciative of that. AMBIANCE -- The restaurant is overall clean and brightly lit. This is more of a takeout spot, there is nowhere to sit inside the restaurant so we walked back to the plaza inside Maunakea Marketplace to eat our meals. Review is for my visit on July 28, 2025.

Tender char Siu and flavorful! Bought half a pound to go. Great to eat with rice! Haven't bought charsiu for a while... but I thighs $18/lb is a bit steep... half a pound wasn't a lot, barely enough to feed 2 people and that's around $10 already. Is that the normal price now!? Service was pretty good. The lady was friendly and the guy was efficient. He gave me a good cut too. I'm glad there's a decent charsiu spot in Chinatown! Next time I can try their other meats.

There are few food things I love more than Chinese roast pork done right. And Char Siu House, in my opinion, makes the best roast pork. When fresh out of the oven, the flavors are perfectly balanced, the fat to lean meat is of good ratio, and the taste is out of this world delicious! It's true that the product isn't always crispy, depending on when you purchase it. It is always delicious! Ever since they opened a number of years ago, it's been my favorite place to pickup roast pork. Also love the the duck sold here. And for those wanting to eat a variety, one can order in plate form with rice and vegetables. Strangely, it's not my favorite for char siu, the highlighted product in their name. Still, when a business does a particular product like roast pork so well... I tend to overlook the less favorite. So much do I love this roast pork, I wait usually until it's the last thing I am picking up from chinatown...rush back to the car... and gobble a few pieces up before driving off. Once that roast pork meets my lips, I know all is good in the world and the day will be stellar! Parking like most of Chinatown can be challenging. Few municipal parking lots scattered here and there. I usually drive around until a metered space opens up on one of the many streets.

Wǒmen chīfàn ba. Let's eat [in Chinese] Do you like roast pork? How about some char siu? Would you eat pigs ear? If you said yes to any of those questions, well what are you waiting for? Let's head to Chinatown for some roast pork, char siu, pigs eat and roast chicken. You can find all the these delicious, finger licking specialties at New Char Siu House. It's a mom and pop shop like. The service is amazing friendly and nice from the butcher man chopping our meat, to the lady having us taste the spicy pigs ear to the young man packing our food. The spicy pig ears is a must try and must have! It's so soft and juicy. The texture is like jello and the first bite has a nice spicy taste. It's not too spicy so this would be perfect for those who don't really like spicy food but would dare to add a touch of spice in their life ;) The store is small, perfect for 5 people at a time. A genuine Asian experience! You buy by the pound or make a plate. I say, get it by the pound and make your rice and some veggies on the side. Make sure to have pickled ground chili sauce on the side with a some shoyu mixed in. I promise, it'll hit the spot! Your tummy will be delighted and it will bring happiness to your face! The roast pork skin is sooo crispy! The pork is perfectly seasoned and cooked well! And, it's juicy!!! The succulent meat melts in your mouth with bursting flavors!

Char Siu bowl and Roast Pork bowl only $9 each!!!!
    Jeanette E.

The food was simple and delicious. We got the char siu bowl and the roast Pork bowl, $9.00 each. Super reasonable in this economy! Found out about this place after it was featured on Cheap Eats with Guy Hagi. It's all take-out because there is no seating areas. We brought ours to the covered tables at the court yard in the Maunakea Shopping place. There was a cute little band playing there.

This place is absolutely amazing! Definitely a hole in the wall location that is family owned and operated. The employees here are absolutely so sweet and phenomenal, they are fast and efficient. Everything is seasoned beautifully and perfectly and the price is absolutely incredible for the huge portion that you get! Come come come!!! Must try!

    Looks better than it was!

As it turns out, the restaurant was full on a week day for dinner so it was good to have a reservation. We ordered six items and started with the salted egg yolk chicken wings. Incredible flavor, crispy outside and juicy inside. This appetizer was so delicious! Next came the green beans and the sweet sour pork. My goodness, talk about perfect green beans, this was still crisp and not over cooked. Nicely seasoned and not too oily...I could eat that everyday! If you enjoy Honey Walnut Shrimp, they do an excellent job here. I like that it didn't have an abundance of mayonnaise. In fact, our batch had an added bonus for a nice crunch effect....kettle potato chips, whole and not crumbs. Might even have been the Maui Onion flavor, not sure but it was good! Last but not least, our family dinner enjoyed the House rice noodles and steamed fish. The thin rice noodles had generous portion of shrimp, beef, and vegetables. Quite hearty, here's to long life :) Easy to find, lots of free parking, not in Chinatown, and BYOB. What's not to like?

The first thing I saw when I walked in was the owner making dumplings by hand. That immediately gave me the feeling I was in the right place. Growing up I watched my own Mom make our version of dumplings, so seeing that kind of care and craftsmanship felt familiar. The owner was warm and very welcoming, and as each dish was completed she brought it out fresh from the kitchen, which gave me a chance to taste the food while it was still steaming. It was hot, but I could not stop myself from sampling it :) Everything I ordered was delicious and clearly made fresh. I'll be honest though, watching the dumplings being prepared right in front of me was a real highlight. I'm sure that some of you out there can relate to this. I also had the chance to meet owner's mother and another gentleman who I believe may have been family, which added to the welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant is small, but it did not feel rushed. We had a good time talking story while the food was being prepared. It was a challenge for me to drive home with all that food in the back of my car. I was tempted to pull over and just indulge, but I remembered that I had to share it lol My summary? Good food, genuine hospitality, and a great first impression. I will definitely be back.
