Being that I was in the New Char Siu House you would of thought I would order Chat Siu. Well I decided to get Roast Pork and half a Duck. Parking takes a bit of patience since it's located along the street in Chinatown. The selection is fairly small, but what they do offer is done well. I usually order the roast pork and char siu, and both are solid every time. Bring cash if you can--it makes things easier. Over the past 14 or maybe 15 years, we've often passed by the Char Siu House while in Chinatown, en route to our favorite "Pork Heaven" or Nam Fong Chinese Meat Roasters, until Nam Fong shuttered its doors in late 2023 when its owner retired. Although we were loyal customers to Nam Fong during its 30-year run, we'd often see local food tour groups with foreign visitors or crowds of residents ordering Cantonese-style roasted meats or lunch plates at the New Char Siu House, yet we never bothered to try them. However, while recently scrolling through Yelp Friends' check-ins, I became aware of Elite Paul C's photos at New Char Siu House featuring one of my favorite Chinese dim sum appetizers, 熏蹄 or Marinated Chilled Pig's Trotter (pettitoe). I routinely got the chilled pig's trotter at Nam Fong, but since their closure, I have settled for only getting this item at local dim sum houses. So, I excitedly showed Paul's food photos to my husband, and he rushed to Chinatown since he also had cravings for this chilled appetizer, Chinese BBQ pork, and crisp-skin Cantonese-style roasted pork. We were lucky to find an open metered parking stall across the street from the New Char Siu House. Since I was just one week from knee replacement surgery, I waited in the car while my husband went in to order from this Chinese roastery. My husband returned to our car with three containers containing half a pound of chilled pig's trotter, Chinese BBQ pork, and Cantonese-style roasted pork. He also mentioned that the person who took his order confirmed his choice of fat or lean or combination cuts of meat, as the butcher selected the glistening BBQ and roasted pork pieces from the meat hooks. They didn't completely seal the containers since the BBQ pork and roasted pork were still fresh and hot from their ovens. Rushing home where I had already cooked a pot of white rice, we broke into the containers. We were impressed by the flavors, fat-to-lean ratio, and tenderness of the BBQ pork and crisp-skinned roasted pork. Also, the chilled pig's trotter came with a condiment cup filled with a vinegar and sugar dipping sauce. The thinly sliced chilled pig's trotter had a slight Chinese liquor flavor and had its signature gelatinous, springy, yet tender texture. Although we thought we had found another new favorite Chinese meat roastery since Nam Fong's closure, we're adding the New Char Siu House to our rotation. read more

I got a late start this morning and missed picking up breakfast as I usually do. Plan B was to order corned beef hash and eggs through my free Grubhub+ membership. But after a series of delivery delays and no driver being assigned, I tried to cancel. Grubhub said it was too late (the food had already been prepared) but gave me a $7 credit. I called the restaurant directly, and they were kind enough to cancel the order on their end. At that point, I decided to try Uber Eats. I signed up and noticed a good range of restaurants, including some I hadn't come across on Grubhub. Wanting a change, I ordered the Char Siu/Roast Pork Plate from New Char Siu House (I later found out they're also available on Grubhub). Everything went smoothly from order to delivery. The food? Very good. The roast pork was crispy in just the right places, and the char siu was tasty and not overly sweet. Portions were adequate -- enough that it lasted me past lunchtime and beyond. We eat here for lunch quite often, we are usually grabbing takeout for the peeps at work. Although I love the Char Siu I always go for the roast pork lunch. I needed to pick up some Chinese barbecue early this morning, and New Char Siu House came up as one of the top spots on Yelp. It's conveniently located, and I was lucky enough to snag a parking spot right in front. I ordered a whole duck, roast pork, pig's feet, and pig's ear. The staff were incredibly friendly and while helping me with my order, making the experience very pleasant. Although I didn't eat the food until an hour later, the quality was still apparent. Everything was tasty, flavorful, and well made. Clearly showcasing their expertise in Chinese barbecue. There are few food things I love more than Chinese roast pork done right. And Char Siu House, in my opinion,makes the best roast pork. When fresh out of the oven, the flavors are perfectly balanced, the fat to lean meat is of good ratio, and the taste is out of this world delicious! It's true that the product isn't always crispy, depending on when you purchase it. It is always delicious! Ever since they opened a number of years ago, it's been my favorite place to pickup roast pork. Also love the the duck sold here. And for those wanting to eat a variety, one can order in plate form with rice and vegetables. Strangely, it's not my favorite for char siu, the highlighted product in their name. Still, when a business does a particular product like roast pork so well... I tend to overlook the less favorite. So much do I love this roast pork, I wait usually until it's the last thing I am picking up from chinatown...rush back to the car... and gobble a few pieces up before driving off. My favorite Filipino takeout place was closed and I had ventured into Chinatown to go there, which I rarely do. On my way back to my car, I passed the New Char Siu House. I decided to stop in. It was early morning and there were no customers. I decided to get a half pound of Char Siu and a half a cold Ginger Chicken with extra sauce. It came out to just under $20. Prices are very reasonable! That saying, you get what you pay for, applies here. The cold chicken was a half chicken, as i saw it being cut up. However, it was a small chicken and IMO more bones & skin. I love Ginger Onion Sauce. The one here is so salty, I ended up using Oyster Sauce. The Char Siu was dry and tough. The flavor was good though. I have had way better Cold Ginger Chicken & Char Siu at other restaurants in Honolulu. Service by the young man who spoke English was friendly. I won't be back! read more

I live near downtown but rarely venture in. Occasionally we'll walk to grab dim sum, but our favorite spot was closed for the day. I remember seeing this place on Cheap Eats recently, so I went in. The food looked good and reasonably priced. Picked up the large Char Siu and Roast Pork bento ($13). It came in a medium takeout container size. I think they could have added a bit more meat to match the ratio of rice and chit sum so I wonder how much you get in the plate lunch size. Char siu was really tasty and soft. Roast pork was delicious with a great flavor, soft meat, good fattiness and crispy skin. I think I prefer the char siu still. There are not to many good char siu, roast duck places in China town like the old days, this one is located on Maunakea Street near Lam's Kitchen. I would say the chat siu is more on the dry side because they don't use fatty pork to prepare it, well, that can be good and bad, more fat, more juicy but not as healthy, their roast pork skin is not as crispy. They also has a lot of other items such as chicken, pig ear, beef trips, pig feet, etc. One item I miss is the orange color squid, according to the owner, it is getting more expensive to make it and it will be too expensive for the customer, so they stop producing it. Most of the people at this place can speak Chinese, so feel like home when you shop there because you can talk story with them (if you know how to speak Chinese) . Preparing for Lunar New Year in Honolulu, Hawaii... Shopping in Honolulu's Chinatown with mom is kinda fun... She wanted to go on a Sunday after church - which is fine with me because metered street parking is free. She wanted to get some meats to serve at dinner - because we only had Jai (Monk's Food) on the menu so far. I told her, "Great! My friend, Chris, gave me a gift certificate for Mei Mei BBQ! Let's go!" As we approached Chinatown via Maunakea Street, I saw a lady get into her vehicle. I anticipated her leaving so that I could park in her space... BINGO! I parked right in front of Char Siu House! Mom got out of my car and saw a plump shoyu chicken in the window of Char Siu House. We made a mental note of it and proceeded on to Mei Mei. Unfortunately, Mei Mei didn't have duck nor chicken. We ended up getting cha siu ribs and roast pork. After getting a duck from Sing Hing Market, we returned to my car, unloaded, and went to the cashier at Char Siu House. I had forgotten that I previously was a customer there a few years ago. My Lunch Buddy, Dear Daniel, and I got two plates and shared the roast pork and Cha siu. It was a yummy good deal! While my mom was purchasing the plump chicken, I had my eyes on the two Joong (steamed mochi rice) on the counter. They were $5 each, so, I got both because (like me) my sister, niece, and nephew enjoy eating Joong, too! I didn't get a photo of it because we were all starving and devoured them! Haha! This place is directly across from my favorite Lei stand (MP Lei) and a little parking lot so I like to stop in when I'm picking up a lei. The line moves fast, the workers are nice/efficient. My go to is the char siu/pork belly combo, size large. It's just a couple bucks more than a small and so worth it. I love the sauce they add to it and it's a lot of food. I usually have enough for a second meal or at least a snack later. The only thing I'm so-so about is the amount of meats they put (I know I said it was a lot of food but it's actually a lot of rice). For me the best char siu you can find here on Oahu, so tasty & moist. They got the glaze on the char siu just right, bursting with flavor. A really good indicator of how good this is would be how ono it is for leftovers. The roast duck is also great, smaller ducks than other places, but you can tell it's roasted right as a lot of the fat you find elsewhere on roast ducks is rendered off. Roast pork is very tasty, my one criticism is that the skin is not crispy. But like the duck, the fat on the roast pork is boiled off right so you got a nice balance of pork and fat. They also offer a wide choice of Chinese bentos, choice of roast duck, roast pork, shoyu chicken and char siu. You can have one or two choices, comes with a good portion of rice and Choi sum. Another critique is that lately they have been less generous on the meats. Wish they would go back to more generous meat portions they gave you before. read more

The side of char siu has a big line of chewy gristle in the middle but I just ate around it. The duck today was tasty and the meat was flavorful and tender. Shoyu Duck 5. Tripe 6. Pig Stomach 7. Pig Tongue 8. Cold Pigs Feet 9. Roast Pork 10. BBQ Spare Ribs 11. Cuttlefish 12. Ginger Chicken 13. Shoyu Chicken. Ching Ming was on April 4, 2021, so I'm not sure if it was the cause for a lot of these Chinese BBQ meat shop to be very busy that day.
