OMG.. where has this place been all my life. I pass this restaurant almost basically everyday cuz I work on Kapahulu. We've always had this place in our 'places to try', and we finally made our way here. Of course, recently, one day after work, the wife picked me up, figured we don't want to cook dinner. Decided to eat out, as is always the question, between me and the wife 'where you like go eat', 'what's for dinner', 'where we going eat', 'what you hungry for'. As we're driving on kapahulu, we're pointing out all the restaurants, passing them, and as we're getting closer, we make a last minute decision and a sudden right turn on to Campbell Ave lol. There's a few parking spaces in the back of the building, otherwise you would need to find street parking, and I'm pretty sure it would be okay to park at Zippy's since they have a bigger lot, but that's up to you if you want to risk it. Honolulu Skewer House is on Kapahulu, in between Uncle Bo's and Pho Saigon. I believe Guava smoked is upstairs. Walking in is a little bit dark on the inside, and first thing they ask is if we have reservations. We said no. But they were able to sit us on the bar table tops. With that said, I would say reservations are probably recommended. This experience was so cool and needed. On the table top had the skewer grill. Then there's another set of bars above the grill to place the cooked skewers. Anyway, we ordered the combo for 2 at $90 which is basically like a prefixe set. Came with sizzling oil tofu salad and braised beef salad cucumber appetizers. Came with 2 skewers of each - beef, brisket, pork jowl, lamb, chicken thigh, Kauai shrimp, king oyster mushroom, zucchini, and mini sausage. And came with baby Chinese cabbage w/ sesame sauce and scallion pancake as hot dish side. We ordered rice on the side and it came with desert- 2 tanghulu, it's like candied fruits, 1 strawberry and 1 orange. We were so surprised and happy, that was so cool. We've never had it before lol. Did I try it? No, but the wife did. She said she liked it. Anyway, cooking the skewers, u just place it on the rotator wheels put it in place, and u just let it cook!!! It automatically rotates cooking the meats thoroughly over the fire. There is a flat grill for the veggies and shrimp. When the skewers are done cooking, you place em on the bars above the grill, and eat!!! This was such a fun and great experience. The servers were nice and friendly the 2 boys. I got to have a Sapporo. The food, the drink, the place, the experience, was much needed. Thank you Honolulu Skewer House. Would we come here again? Yes, definitely. Tried it for the first time and it was better than I thought! My fav was the beef skewer, the marinade made it taste so good! Most of the skewers come in either 3 or 5 and marinated spicy or non spicy. And we also loved the garlic eggplant. There is parking behind the store but there are only a few spots. The staff were friendly and helpful and would come around to tell us when some of the skewers are ready. They also gave us these frozen fruits for dessert! Will definitely come back :) read more

As my family and I strolled through Waikiki, we stumbled upon Honolulu Skewer House, and the photos of the skewers on the truck immediately caught our attention. We decided to try the beef skewers, and when I tell you they were tender, flavorful, and absolutely delicious, I mean it. Every bite was perfectly seasoned and cooked just right. They were so good that the very next day, we intentionally made our way back just to order more! We also tried the Taiwanese pork bowl, and it was phenomenal packed with flavor and incredibly satisfying. Sometimes the best food is found by accident, and this was definitely one of those moments. This is my go to skewer house. We love it because they have this machine that can rotate the skewers while we cook the food, even we have to grill it ourselves, it is min. work. We can enjoy hot hot skewer instead of other restaurants that cook for you and the skewer comes to your table kind of just warm. They do have a very small parking in the back, this is one thing we do not like. You can find street parking or park across the street in a paid parking lot. Inside set up looks like a Chinese restaurant and most workers speak mandarin. Reservation is a must. They give free small dessert at the end. Highly recommended. read more

Easily one of the best skewer spots I've ever been to. The meat quality is excellent, and they don't skimp at all on portion size per skewer. The appetizers are really good here as well. There's also a really wide selection to choose from, including some more exotic options if you want to branch out beyond the usual cuts. The space itself is small but clean, with a slightly modern interior. Service was attentive. Beef and Cucumber Salad: 9/10 - The sauce in this is so addictive and there's a decent amount of meat. The portion size alone is huge and could easily be shared among 4+ people. Cucumber is fresh and retains it texture despite soaking in the flavourful sauce. Cold Noodle Soup: 7/10: Similar to Korea's mulnaengmyeon. Flavourful broth that pairs really well with the fresh veggies and chewy (in a good way) noodles. read more

First time doing northern Chinese bbq and was not disappointed. Ordered a combination of skewers, hot/cold dishes. Most of the skewers came with a gear on one end that fits into a track. The track then runs back and forth to automatically rotate the skewers as they cook. Everything I tried was delicious! My friends have been raving about this place for so long saying that it was "the best Chinese food outside of China" and with a statement like that, my expectations were very high. We made a reservation for 5 of us which I think was necessary-- it does get very busy and there aren't a ton of tables. What I love about this spot is that there's a grill on the table that you cook up your skewers yourself! So every skewer is piping hot and fresh. It even has this rotating mechanism to cook the meat evenly. The staff is very attentive and will come by and let you know which meats need to be rotated out etc. My friends did a lot of the ordering, which they did in Chinese, but here are my top dishes we got: -Beef -Lamb - Pork Jowl -Pork with Enoki mushrooms -Chicken Heart -Chicken Gizzard - Beef throat, as listed on the menu but my friend's said that the translation wasn't correct -Big Island Eggplant Everything paired perfectly with a pitcher of beer and don't miss out on their spicy dry seasoning mix that they have on the tables! This is the best skewer place I've been to, and I've been to a good amount since I'm from Orange County California. Me and my 2 friends couldnt decide which skewer was our most favorite because we enjoyed every single thing we chose on the menu. I am usually not this impressed with food so this review is coming from the heart. My absolute top favorite is: enoki wrapped with pork, beef, chicken soft bone, beef, beef tongue, and the north east salad? (I forgot exactly what it's called lol). The service was attentive and the ambience was very chill and enjoyable to spend time with friends while having some food and sake. I wish we had one of these places back at home. Over here, you grill the skewers yourself, and the staff handle the marinating! The automatic grill was amazing-- I'd never seen anything like it before. For the price and quality, my hubby and I highly recommend Honolulu Skewer House. The preset combo for 4 people was plenty of food! And we can eat! We had ample side dishes along with various types of meats, cuts, and marinades. My Taiwanese hubby was worried everything would start tasting like cumin, which has been his experience at other Chinese skewer places. He was pleasantly surprised that the meats weren't overly seasoned with the same sauce. Service was standard - not terrible but not excellent. Just fine. Some downsides: We were sat in the corner which eventually got a bit uncomfortable for us with the heat. Perhaps some fans in that corner may help? Otherwise it was bearable. They have overall good ventilation in there but be prepared to still smell like bbq lol. Parking sucks - but that is to be expected of the area. read more

First time here at Honolulu Skewer House and it's a 4/5, but a little more pricey than I expected. It was just under $100 for two people. The food was delicious for the most part. I believe my type of preference of meat isn't too different than most and the is supposed to be for popular, but the Beef Back Strap was not it for me. I couldn't finish it. Other than that the oysters, zucchini, corn, beef brisket, pork belly, and pork w/ enoki mushrooms were really good! I was looking forward to the Tanghulu but it was really small for $2.99 ea. Tried this place for the first time and I highly recommend... We just moved here in kapahulu and very lucky that we're surrounded by restaurants and small cafe. Anyway, seen this place with long lines all the time A couple of times, we tried sitting in, but unfortunately, if you don't have reservations it will be a long wait till you can seat in since everyone seem to have reservations. This time, we called in and was able to get a table last minute. We tried the 2 people combos (which was only $70) and it came with so many options!!! The whole combo was enough for 4 ppl. Wow - this was such a culinary experience! I went with one of my friends from China and she told me that it is apparently "the best" Northeast Chinese BBQ restaurant in North America. The review that she had heard had definitely lived up to my experience that I had there! They skewers were so delicious - we had a variety of different meats ranging from chicken to squid to lamb and everything was so good. We also had chives wrapped in tofu and vegetables on the side and a chicken dish. One of the most delicious dishes was also the oysters too. Everything was so delicious here and fresh and I was so happy at the end of my meal and it was probably one of the best meals I had while in honolulu. What a unique restaurant, just outside of Waikiki. It's small inside and can seat a few small groups, so expect long waits. What you'll find inside is a large variety of meat on skewers to grill on an automated grill on the table. Some of my favorites were the Beef Tongue, Beef, Chicken Thigh and Pork Belly. We also tried the shrimp and mussels, with varied reaction from the group at the table. I think if you like seafood, you will definitely enjoy those. Food was amazing. We got the dinner for 4 and we had waaaay more than enough food. Everything had Incredible flavor and tasted fresh. The service was very kind and attentive and the skewer mechanism was a nice change of pace. The only thing wrong with this place is that the area is so sketchy. You have to find street parking and there are so many homeless people everywhere. They didn't harm us directly but you could smell urine and poop just walking from the car to the restaurant. Among all the amazing food here in Honolulu, HSH really stood out with its fun and interactive DIY style! The food was delicious, great service, and I had my Shazam on the whole night for the latest Mandopop they were playing. I recommend the beef tongue, grilled eggplant, and the local specialties like draft beer and Maui pineapples were such a nice treat. Dipping sauces included a ponzu-esque and sweet chili dipping sauce, but of course the OG 燒烤 (shaokao dry rub) had to be my favorite. This place is so good!! My wife and I came here on a Friday night. It was packed but luckily a table just left when we had just arrived. We were greeted immediately and the waiter cleaned then sat us at our table. Waiter and waitress were very attentive refilling water very often. They guided through the cooking process letting us know how much time each skewer took to cook. The food is oh sooo delicious. My friends took me here and it really hit the spot. They have a great selection of skewers and you can order a set or make your own choices with their a la carte selections. They use the same seasonings for everything (and also have a shaker with more seasoning at the table). So everything has the same note to it but it is a really good seasoning. I loved the flavor but at the end of the night, I felt like I consumed way too much salt and wish I got more rice. Part of the experience is that you're cooking your skewers in front of you and it rotates the skewers for you. So, be prepared to not eat right away as you need to wait for your food to cook, but it's really nice that your food is always hot and fresh throughout the whole meal. read more
