Marugame Udon absolutely lives up to the hype, but timing is everything. If you can, visit during the day when there is little to no line. In the evening, it is not unusual to see the line 40 or more people deep. If you are just grabbing food to go, there is also a separate takeout order window that lets you skip the main line. The udon is fresh, flavorful, and incredibly comforting. I tried several dishes, and while the tonkotsu was not my favorite, everything else we had was excellent. Be sure to save room for the tempura and fried sides because they are just as good as the noodles. My favorites were the potato, sweet potato, and cheese tempura. The service is cafeteria style with fried tempera style meat and veggie options to get with your Udon! The tempera shrimp and chicken I got was bland and lacked flavor! Saw the line and almost went somewhere else. However, my coworker said "It moves faster than you'd think and it's well worth the wait". Was it ever. It's a rare treat when I fall in love with a place and rave about it so much that I have to have it again. Not only that, but I have to bring my significant other along to share in the deliciousness! I don't know how I'm just now talking about Marugame Udon. When I first came here, my friend and I decided to give it a try because we saw the longest line and wanted to see what all the hype was about. There was a couple in front of us who said they come here every time they visit Hawaiʻi and that it's a must-do stop on every trip. When you walk in, it's a small place. You can watch a team member washing the noodles and portioning them into bowls right in front of you. Then you choose your bowl size, small or large, and select your broth. After that, you get to choose from a variety of fried items and other à la carte options displayed on a warmer. Seating can be limited because of how busy this place gets. You line up to get your food, pay for it, grab your condiments, utensils, and a cup of water, then find a seat and enjoy. I've already been here twice, and after writing about my experience, I need to make a third visit happen very soon! There are not enough days off in a week to enjoy all of the amazing food on this island, but I'm going to do my best to experience as many places as I can. I had heard of Marugame and I love udon, so I was excited to try this place. Because they are so well known, I knew they would have long lines, so I opted to go off peak hours and went around 3pm. There were maybe 5 people ahead of me in line who hadn't started placing their order yet. As you're waiting in line, they have large menu signs for you to look at to ponder over what to order. I got the regular sized Nikutama udon, hot, which came with beef, sweet onions, and a soft boiled egg. After you order your main dish, you can add some sides, but I knew the udon would be more than filling, so I didn't get anything else. The Nikutama came with beef, but I didn't love it. I should've gotten the pork chashu, which is my usual go-to. Was this the most amazing udon I've ever had? No, but it's in a convenient location if you're staying in Waikiki and it's reliable. They had a steady stream of customers, but the workers were able to keep things moving fairly quickly - especially important when they're busier! read more

I got the chicken brother, extra egg and tempura cheese and shrimp. The broth was excellent. Packed with flavor. The noodles are hand made daily. If you've never had udon, they are thick and have a bit of a chewy texture. The bowl is a hearty meal. We actually ended up sharing since we weren't super hungry but really wanted to try this place. The line moves pretty fast waited about 20 minutes before I step foot inside the door watching the cook scoop the udon and twirl it to form a serving.
