I gave this place 3 stars because I am not a fan of Udon at this restaurant it was my first time having it! The noodles were way too thick and dense! It was off putting! The service is cafeteria style with fried tempera style meat and veggie options to get with your Udon! The tempera shrimp and chicken I got was bland and lacked flavor! The broth from Udon was very flavorful. The prices were affordable and portion generous. The lines are long especially at night I recommend having for lunch instead of dinner. It is worth a try the restaurant is small but there is ample seating can get a bit crowded inside!
Saw the line and almost went somewhere else. However, my coworker said "It moves faster than you'd think and it's well worth the wait". Was it ever. The ordering was confusing at first but the staff was nice enough to help/guide with any questions. I was also lucky enough to have my coworker tell me what was good and what wasn't. The food was delish!! The cleaners were really good about clearing tables and keeping up with the fast paced turnover of customers, and it works great. I can't wait to get back.
Can't go wrong with handmade udon, karaage chicken, sweet potato and mushroom tempura. Service is nothing special. Just like a lunch line where u tell them what u want and move on to the cashier. As far as the ambiance it's kind of messy a little dirty. It's the kind of place u just eat and go. Not a place to hangout with people. Pricing went up like 5-6$ but still affordable.

I don't know how I'm just now talking about Marugame Udon. When I first came here, my friend and I decided to give it a try because we saw the longest line and wanted to see what all the hype was about. There was a couple in front of us who said they come here every time they visit Hawaiʻi and that it's a must-do stop on every trip. When you walk in, it's a small place. You can watch a team member washing the noodles and portioning them into bowls right in front of you. Then you choose your bowl size, small or large, and select your broth. After that, you get to choose from a variety of fried items and other à la carte options displayed on a warmer. Seating can be limited because of how busy this place gets. You line up to get your food, pay for it, grab your condiments, utensils, and a cup of water, then find a seat and enjoy. I've already been here twice, and after writing about my experience, I need to make a third visit happen very soon! There are not enough days off in a week to enjoy all of the amazing food on this island, but I'm going to do my best to experience as many places as I can. This place is totally worth the 45-minute commute from Wahiawa.

This spot was worth it though. It's nothing fancy, it's like a conveyor belt of goodness. They make fresh udon in house and you can literally see them making the pasta real time. We ordered the CURRY NIKUTAMA 10/5 Chicken katsu 4/5 Shrimp Tempura 3/5 Cheese tempura 5/5 (A MUST) The food surpassed my expectations and beyond. It was so flavorful, rich, and creamy. It came with a beef, the fresh udon, a curry sauce, egg, and some green onions. The cheese tempura was my fave side it was literally like having a mozzarella stick out tempura style. Amazing. It's a pretty large space inside that can accommodate groups if needed. They also have outdoor seating in the back of the restaurant. I need to come back to Waikiki just for this spot
Excellent udon. Chicken Katsu Curry was great, though truth be told, I prefer Katsu sauce to curry with this dish. However, nothing wrong with either the Katsu or with the curry sauce. Self-service and SUPER fast food! This is what fast food strives to be had it high-quality food. Ambiance? None. It's about the food...and rightly so. Don't miss this place.
Wanted to try all food possible while in Waikiki. Came across this place, saw the rating and was sold! Everything was fresh and the sauces were DELICIOUS!! The fried chicken app/side was a little bland but the sauces elevated it a 10000%. The crab was amazing but the chicken teriyaki udon was my fav. We ordered it for delivery and the expected time of service was right on point and quick! Absolutely recommend if you love noodles or anything tempura. Definitely 10/10

You will pick your noodle bowl and then pick up a second plate if you'd like to pick up some tempura as well. The gyoza were especially good. So much food at a great price and it tasted amazing. After you order your main dish, you can add some sides, but I knew the udon would be more than filling, so I didn't get anything else. The Nikutama came with beef, but I didn't love it. I should've gotten the pork chashu, which is my usual go-to. Was this the most amazing udon I've ever had? No, but it's in a convenient location if you're staying in Waikiki and it's reliable. They had a steady stream of customers, but the workers were able to keep things moving fairly quickly - especially important when they're busier!
If you're in Honolulu and thinking about trying Marugame Udon, do it. The noodles were perfectly chewy and fresh, and we both got the Number 1 Beef Udon. Holy crud, it was SO good. The broth was rich and comforting, and the beef had a sweet and delicious flavor. Even though the line looked long, it moved insanely fast, which made the whole experience even better. One of the coolest parts was getting to choose your own tempura cafeteria-style. There were so many options, and everything we tried was crispy and delicious. This was so authentic to the udon I had in Japan.

Marugame Udon absolutely lives up to the hype, but timing is everything. If you can, visit during the day when there is little to no line. In the evening, it is not unusual to see the line 40 or more people deep. If you are just grabbing food to go, there is also a separate takeout order window that lets you skip the main line. The udon is fresh, flavorful, and incredibly comforting. I tried several dishes, and while the tonkotsu was not my favorite, everything else we had was excellent. Be sure to save room for the tempura and fried sides because they are just as good as the noodles. My favorites were the potato, sweet potato, and cheese tempura. I am already looking forward to coming back to sample more of the menu. read more
The best udon I've ever had ... again! The noodles are made fresh and have the perfect texture. The ordering process is simple and fun. Grab a tray, order your udon (broth or curry), then grab a plate and use the tongs to choose from the delicious selection of fried items, all cooked to crispy perfection. After paying at the cashier, pick up your utensils, sauces, and drinks before heading to the table they assign you. Then, it's time to dig in! The kids absolutely loved the chicken katsu, and I honestly loved everything we ordered. Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying. Tempura can be made Fresh per your request. Then one of the staff will help located a table for you. Very touristy place (then again all of Waikiki is). Recently stopped by Marugame Udon and had a delicious experience. We went on a weekday evening and the line stretched outside, but it moved quickly. The cafeteria-style setup keeps things efficient. You grab a tray, order your udon as you move down the line, pick up tempura and sides with tongs, then pay at the end. After that, a staff member helps guide you to a table, and there's a self-serve station for utensils and sauces. Highly recommend grabbing the tempura sauce. Nikutama Udon (5/5): Sweet and light broth that thickens nicely once mixed with the soft-boiled egg. Simple, comforting, and really well balanced. Hit the spot! Not sure it lived up to all the hype, but after a long day and being jet-lagged, it was comforting and satisfying. I got the #1 and loved it. Hubs got #9 and added Chicken Katsu Chicken Katsu was the star: juicy, flavorful, not overly breaded, and not greasy. My #1 had great broth flavor, but the meat was a little too fatty for my taste. If I lived here, I might come again, but it's not something I would recommend for someone staying in the area. Much better eats in the area. read more

The line gets super long at night - we've only ever gone for lunch or for an early dinner where there was no wait or else it was very short. Ordering can be a little chaotic; is seems rushed and is loud in there, so be prepared to order in advance. Marugame is a must visit every time we visit Hawaii. My husband and I have dined in and also ordered pick up when the lines were too long, but honestly, the wait is always worth it because the udon is so fresh! The restaurant has a lively ambiance that captures the energy of Waikiki! Just a heads up: you cannot save seats while waiting for your food, so your whole party needs to be ready to sit once you've gone through the line. The staff is consistently friendly, and despite the crowds, the services moves incredibly fast. On this visit, I tried the tempura for the first time and particularly loved the shrimp and sweet potato. It was perfectly crispy! Since I'm pregnant and currently avoiding soft boiled eggs, I skipped my usual Nikutama and tried the beef udon. It was delicious! The beef complimented the fresh udon noodles and broth. Massive line...moves very fast. A bowl of hot noodle soup isn't what you'd expect to want while in a tropical climate, but this hit the spot. The line is cafeteria style and a bit intimidating. Grab a tray. Order the size bowl and broth. Add extras. They hand it to you. You can then self serve additional tempura extras such as cheese, shrimp or fried veggies. Pay at the register and hope a seat is open. People tend to eat fast and make space but you may find you're having to wait for a few minutes for a table to open up during prime hours. I got the chicken brother, extra egg and tempura cheese and shrimp. The broth was excellent. Packed with flavor. The noodles are hand made daily. If you've never had udon, they are thick and have a bit of a chewy texture. The bowl is a hearty meal. We actually ended up sharing since we weren't super hungry but really wanted to try this place. It was perfect for us to share. The cheese was so good. Deep fried with a nice tempura crust. The shrimp was good too. You could kinda tell it had sat there for a bit, but it wasn't too bad. I imagine this would hit amazing if you had one too many drinks the night before and needed something to bring you back to life. read more
I was so excited about this restaurant. The hype is real, the line outside the restaurant adds to the excitement. However the food was less than impressive. The food was not seasoned well. It was so bland. However, the cheese tempura was one of the best bites on the trip. Just skip the noodles. Marugame is the only reason we ever come into waikīkī. You can see them making the noodles by hand which gives them a really chewy texture. The line is normally pretty long but they're super efficient so it moves quickly and there's always seats opening up. The prices have definitely gone up over the years but it's still one of the most reasonably priced meals especially for waikīkī. There's a big variety of tempura which are always hot and fresh. Workers are super friendly and helpful too, feels like you're in japan. read more

I remember coming here when they just opened this location on Kuhio Ave their very first location on the island. Very long line then and today still a long line but not too bad. The line moves pretty fast waited about 20 minutes before I step foot inside the door watching the cook scoop the udon and twirl it to form a serving. I ordered a large creamy broth udon with 2 servings of the udon. I also got 5 different types of tempura, chicken, tamagoyaki, squid, zucchini, sweet potato and also got a big serving of their chicken katsu. So delicious, so worth the wait. I came here with a friend in November to Hawaii as lot of the locals recommended it for great vibes, cheap eats and a good food. We arrived about a few hours after opening. The line was not long but it picked up after we got there! So we beat the rush. It's like a conveyor belt system so make sure you know what you want. I ended up getting the spicy noodles as it was vegetarian dish. The staff was very friendly. The noodles was good and the broth packed flavor like no joke. After you order you. They prepare it right there on the spot. Then you move on to the sides if you want any. I didn't as I get so full so easily. The girlie got sides which I was able to sample. It's self seating and there was ample seating when we came. The staff is quickly turning and burning seats. To go bags/boxes are an Available. We enjoyed our time here and highly recommend if you are in Hawaii. read more

We happened to arrive before the dinner rush and were able to walk right in, which was lucky since there's usually a line out the door. I was already familiar with the concept because I've been to their location in LA, and there are clear instructions inside on how to order. I ordered the nikutama along with a selection of tempura. Unfortunately some of the tempura seemed like it had been sitting out for a while it was a bit stale and not very crispy, which was disappointing. The udon broth itself was just okay, but the beef was a bit too fatty for my preference. Udon is made to order so it was good and had a good chew to it! The restaurant is spacious and able to accommodate a lot of people, and the overall pace is pretty quick and efficient. It's a solid spot to check out, but overall nothing about the meal really stood out or wowed me. read more
We were lucky, went around 3PM and didn't have to wait long at all! I'm a first timer. First you grab your tray, place your order which they give to you on the spot, then you can pick whichever sides you want. The restaurant is fairly small. The upon here is always SO GOOD. I am always for any place that has a good consistent taste and the upon here has been my favorite for years now!! The workers are very kind but it is also one of those places that seems to encourage the least amount of interaction which I personally prefer because I'll be busy eating anyways read more

Guests place their order, complete payment, and then seat themselves. You select your preferred item, which is prepared fresh by the chef. There are two bowl sizes available--regular and large. Afterward, you can choose from a variety of fried accompaniments to enjoy with your udon, including fried egg, chicken, squid, imitation crab leg, and more. I ordered the creamy broth udon, which was especially comforting after a long day of traveling. I finished the entire bowl. The restaurant operates at a fast pace while remaining very clean. It's both. The name on the outside of the building is Marukame, but it's the same as Marukame in SF.
