While the seating is limited and there is usually a line outside, it's definitely worth it. We ordered 2 bowls: one salmon (which came with miso soup so we upgraded to crab miso soup..... YES CRAB MISO SOUP! ) and one with a mix of everything. They were all delicious. They even have recommendations on how to enjoy them best especially if you get the egg yolk shoyu to add to it. I highly suggest you do - absolute game changer! Our little one enjoyed a small bowl of udon as well. The ambiance is chill considering the seating is very limited (15 seats approximately). It's all bar seating arrangement where you can see the staff cook the food. Oh, by the way, we saw Amy Hill here! You know the auntie with the butcher knife who works at the restaurant in 50 First Dates!

Totoya has become one of my favorite places to celebrate special occasions! The staff is always so friendly and welcoming, which makes the whole dining experience that much better. The intimate space instantly transports me back to Japan--it has such a strong resemblance to dining at Tsujihan. Their Negitoro bowls are an absolute must-try, and I always love starting with the miso soup and salad, then washing it all down with green tea. Incredible food, cozy atmosphere, and top-notch service--you have to check them out!

It truly feels like an off island experience where we step into Japan for the meal! Honestly every bowl is delicious.. for this meal I got the Fukuju bowl with seaweed miso soup! Their yuzu infused ginger really elevates the meal! Hands down one of my go to places to bring people when they visit O'ahu!

Totoya is a Japanese sushi chain and so happy to see it now in Hawaii, with multiple locations in Aiea, Kaimuki, and Piikoi. We went to the Kaimuki location to see what the hype was about. I had their signature negitoro matsu bowl and it was absolutely divine! I was always hesitant to eat negitoro because of the negi or green onions in the name, but it tasted like a finer, soft ahi paste with ikura and uni. Delicious, although can be pricy at $30+ per entree. Highly recommend for authentic, negitoro experience.

SO GOOD!! Walking into Totoya feels like stepping into a little corner of Japan. The food is fantastic, the service is warm and welcoming, and the entire experience feels authentic. The space is small, so there can be a wait, but don't let that discourage you. The restaurant is mostly bar seating, and people tend to order, eat, and head out, so the turnover is surprisingly quick. It's not really a spot for large groups, but that's part of its charm. One thing you absolutely have to order is the salad. I know it sounds strange to get excited about shredded cabbage, but it's actually the yuzu dressing that is incredible. It strikes the perfect balance of sweet, savory, and citrusy flavors in a way that I've never had anywhere else. Unfortunately, it's homemade. And I'm still thinking about it. Let's not skip over the main attraction - the bowls! Every bowl I've tried is delicious, but you need to get the negitoro with the shoyu egg so you can mix it altogether and make little hand rolls with the nori. Perfection!

WOW, I love negitoro bowls now. First time trying one of these and also Totoya, and it was impressive. It felt like l went back to Japan again. It's only a counter seating style type and can fit around 15-20 people. But, it's very clean and organized. You can also see the workers making your dish! The customer service was great, they're very attentive and kind. I got the tame bowl and added a shoyu egg (you need to add it, it made the flavor so much more intense!) When I first ate it, it was like a punch of flavor. It was filled with umami as the salmon roe pops in your mouth. Every bowl order also comes with a miso soup! They have a 7 step guide on how to best eat the bowl and the sides, I approve! So good :)

Reminds me of Japan!! Small little restaurant with bar seating. Menu is super simple and easy to follow and staff is very helpful if you have questions. Be prepared to wait or come early if you want to beat the line! Second time dining here and I can't complain! Every bowl is so good and the fish literally melts in your mouth.

Amazing amazing amazing! Service was amazing and everything ran so smoothly. The ambiance is calm, cozy, and intimate as you're sitting at the chef's bar. The food -- amazing. The soup pairing just makes sense and this is such a comforting meal for me since I LOVE sushi and miss Japan.

I understand the hype. The best comparison I can make is this: what Ichiran did for ramen, Totoya has done for seafood bowls. It takes something familiar, strips away the unnecessary decisions and turns it into a process that's incredibly easy to enjoy. The restaurant is tiny, but everything feels deliberate. The staff keeps things moving without making you feel rushed, our waitress was genuinely wonderful with our kids and even the people waiting around us couldn't have been friendlier. It felt like everyone was in on the same little secret. The first surprise wasn't even the fish. It was the cabbage salad. Shredded cabbage, crispy noodles, miso yuzu dressing. That's it. Somehow it's one of the best salads I've had in a long time. It's the kind of dish that makes you wonder why nobody else bothers to do something so simple this well. Then came the negitoro bowl. The ikura shower is absolutely worth the extra ten bucks. Yes, it's a little theatrical with the bell ringing, but if you're going to pour an avalanche of salmon roe over my bowl, you might as well make a show of it. The crab miso soup upgrade is another easy yes. The crab almost feels like they're apologizing in advance for ruining every ordinary bowl of miso soup you'll have afterward. It isn't perfect but nothing is. The rice was a little clumpy and needed to be broken apart. After a while, the flavors begin to blend together more than I expected and those beautiful sheets of nori lose the battle against Hawaii's humidity pretty quickly. They look incredible, but they become soft before you can really enjoy them. I also wish I could order another bowl of that cabbage salad by itself. Our kids demolished the udon. Perfect texture, comforting broth and probably the easiest win of the entire meal. Will we come back? Absolutely. Totoya isn't trying to reinvent Japanese food. It's taking a handful of excellent ingredients, removing the friction and executing the experience with remarkable consistency. Sometimes that's what great restaurants do.

I came here with a party of five right at 11 AM on a weekday and no wait. I got the Tokujo and my husband got the Fukuju. We parked in a lot across the street. I devoured my entire bowl- rice and all. I got the shoyu egg sauce and the miso soup it comes with is incredible. My mother in law was with us and said the price was not bad for how much fish but not the same as Japan where she tried. For me, it was fantastic- fresh and flavorful. They care about quality of service and dining experience. I definitely want to come back here to get the Tokujo bowl again!

The negitoro bowls are amazing. The fish tastes fresh and even the miso soup is really good. You can tell they take pride in their bowls. I upgraded to the daily special salmon miso and it was 100 % worth it. They did not skimp. There were big chunks of salmon throughout. I like to add the egg yolk with shoyu because it melts into the bowl and gives everything this rich, creamy vibe. I'm also an ikura girl forever, so I added extra and no regrets. The pop and saltiness in each bite make it soo good. Service is super fast once you order, which I appreciate. The only downside is you have to wait outside in line and they do not take reservations, so peak hours can test your patience. But honestly... I still keep coming back. Fresh fish therapy is real.

I'm seriously drooling again just writing this review. Another amazing find thanks to Feed Mei Mei on YouTube! Dining at Totoya truly makes you feel like you've been transported back to Japan. We came for an early lunch and were lucky to grab the last couple of seats. They only have about 12-14 spots total, so it fills up quickly. I ordered the Nagomi bowl, which came with salmon, scallop, uni, shrimp, tuna, negitoro, and roe. My husband got the negitoro bowl and added snow crab. We both upgraded to the salmon miso soup, and it was so comforting and flavorful, definitely worth it. Each bowl comes with a couple pieces of nori, but you can request more for a small additional charge. And trust me, two pieces are not enough!. Everything tasted incredibly fresh and delicious. I only wish we had more time in Oahu to come back again, but we'll absolutely be returning on our next trip.

Fresh fish at it's finest! Totoya offers fresh fish on rice in multiple ways! Menu posted outside for quick ordering process. Once you enter server is super friendly and will explain menu items, soup options, and offer suggestions if your unsure about what to order. Casual dining with seating around the chef, stop by for a Japanese dish in Kaimuki Town.

I also don't understand how Yelp lists this place as a "good for kids". It's not. There wasn't a kids' menu and the dishes were not kid-palate friendly (other than maybe the basic California style hand roll). For example, the fried tofu had shredded ginger on top that permeated the dish and the karaage had a very mild (but present!) note of spice that reminded me a bit of buffalo sauce. Our waiter didn't even give us a heads up or point us in the direction of any dishes to consider for the kids (surely we must not be the only family who has brought kids to this restaurant). Lastly, I understand that the tempura brownie is popular but after tasting the "tempura" on the tofu I'm sure the brownie is just the star that shines through. The "tempura" on the tofu was gummy and not the authentic Japanese tempura we are used to (my husband, who is part Japanese, said to me "What is this?! Cornstarch?"). This is probably a great restaurant for drinks and hanging out with some adult friends but the rolls and appetizers were just not to our tastes. We were also sat outside when the restaurant was near empty inside and out (we went around 4PM) and it was a hot day (though the AC wasn't particularly cool enough for my preference inside either).

Seriously, it's easy to enjoy their bowls, sushi sets, or bentos anytime and anyplace. We've got a passion for this place. Here's how this love affair started...I discovered Domo when a friend invited me for some sushi and sips at her place. I was amazed at the beautiful platter of sushi that accompanied our sake and wine. My friends are the best hosts! I devoured the bombs, nigiris and rolls (in between sips!). Everything was simply delicious! Fast forward a few months, I order a couple sushi sets to host a poolside, golden-hour birthday get together at my other friend's home. My hubby went in to pick up the sushi and said they were slammed but our sushi sets were ready to go. This time we ordered some ikura because the hubby and my bestie are big fans. Both agree it was fresh and fantastic! And the garlic set with the flash-seared fish and a hint of mayo is a MUST-try. We also ordered a California roll for my friend's aunt who is not really a sushi fan. She delighted in several pieces and even enjoyed the nigiri from the garlic set. Total convert! After enjoying the platters and sets, we had to try the bentos and bowls. This time it's just us and the pup at the park. The bentos provide a great variety and comes with miso soup. The hubby really likes the shrimp tempura with ahi and salmon nigiri and ahi poke. It's a steal at less than $20. I'm a bowl girl myself and like the spicy tempura. The tempura is cooked crisp yet tender. The spicy ahi poke combined with the creamy crab salad and the crunchy ocean salad delights all my tastes buds. It's truly an adventure in finding the perfect bite--and there are so many in this bowl! I also love the seared salmon bowl. It is melt-in-your-mouth goodness. I add the fried onions for some texture. You know a place is top-notch when you can feel confident that anything off their menu will satisfy your cravings. Because this is a Yelp review, here are some helpful tips. For sushi platters, pre-order. The online system is simple to use. Service is fast and efficient if you're just walking in for a quick bite or to grab something to go. Parking has always been easy for us to find in the small lot in the complex where Domo is located. It's right next to Assagio's Kahala. But if you're worried about parking, I suggest ordering in advance and then just picking up. This works great during peak dining hours. If you want fresh, delicious sushi that is reasonably priced be like us and visit Domo Café. You will probably also be like us and want to go back to try more.
