1st time for everything, the omakase experience. Nice ambience, with friendly service, and a talented chef! Was very skeptical as I like to eat what I want to eat. However, every dish was amazingly delicious and well prepared! Things I would never eat, I ate it! Some pics had no chance to post.

What a wonderful gem. If you're in Honolulu and love, quality sushi, you have to come to Aki. First off it is an intimate setting where you get to enjoy the chef making individual pieces directly in front of you, so it is perfect for those that enjoy personal attention with their omakase meal. Our Omakasa menu was 21 courses and every course was incredible. The course is definitely more than what most other places offer, so you will not only be satisfied, but the cadence and the combination is so well done that you will enjoy the changing of flavors and texture with each course. Many of the ingredients are shipped in from Japan so we were able to taste various wonderful dishes typically available in Japan. From the fish to the tempura, and even to the soup, I could not find a single fault for each course that carefully seasoned where you don't need anything additional and each bite felt perfect. Talk about quality, authentic, tasty and elegant. 100% my stop for every time I'm in Honolulu. Thank you for a wonderful evening, chef!!!

Great service and excellent omakase. Small intimate setting with only 6 seats ay sushi counter with a small private room on the side. Loved the Hokkaido uni, abalone, Chawamushi and ikura. Everything was fresh. Good sake and beer selection. 18 plus courses, more than enough. Delicious light dessert. Omakase changes every month. Will definitely return.

my boyfriend took me here on my first omakase experience on the island and would say, ambiance, service and quality was 10/10. we've had omakase in Japan and would say this comes close. we ate through it quick but still enjoyed every. single. bite. seared items seemed to make it to my top favorites of the 19 piece course we've had but all items were on par with my taste palette.

Sushi Aki is a quaint little sushi restaurant tucked away in a plaza in Honolulu. While it might be a bit challenging to find due to the lack of signage, the intimate and cozy atmosphere inside makes it well worth the search. They offer 2 omakase options - 19-piece omakase and 21-piece omakase. I opted for the 19-piece omakase, which offered a delightful variety of fresh and high-quality sushi. The pace was quite fast, which worked perfectly for me as I had a flight to catch. One unique aspect of dining experience at Sushi Aki is that not everyone in your group is required to participate in their omakase experience. If someone in your group wants to order from their a la carte menu then that is totally fine too. My 19-piece omakase included- 1. Bluefin tuna and rock bream sashimi 2. Striped Jack sushi 3. Seared bonito 4. Flounder sushi 5. Salmon roe 6. Chilled corn soup 7. Rolled egg omlete 8. Seared scallop 9. Steamed egg with snor crab and shitake 10. Saltwater Eel and vegetable tempura 11. Seared vinegar cured Mackerel 12. Black sea bream 13. Abalone in liver sauce 14. Chutoro 15. Sea Eel 16. Tuna skinny roll 17. Yellowtail 18. Seaweed miso soup 19. Dessert The highlights for me were the sea eel, melt-in-your-mouth chutoro, mackerel, black sea bream, scallop, and the delicious chilled corn soup. The 2 courses that fell short were the dessert and the abalone in liver sauce. The dessert was basically tangerine with tasteless jelly. And the abalone was a bit chewy. Overall the dining experience was great. The intimate setting allowed for interactions with other diners, adding to the charm of the restaurant. If you're looking for a good sushi experience in Honolulu, Sushi Aki is definitely worth a visit.

First of all I want to congratulate Sushi Aki on 1 year of business in Kaimuki! This small door is right when you walk in to the unassuming location in the parking lot. You walk in and there should be a door right to your left. Please do not confuse Restaurant Aki with Sushi Aki. Restaurant Aki is the regular Izakaya/Yakitori location, and Sushi Aki is a separate entity as the sister restaurant. The experience was top notch and at a 19-course omakase with a bonus sushi at the end which would actually equate to a 20-course omakase for $135 this is an extremely good deal. The sushi chef was extremely skilled and I am always extremely impressed at the dedication and skill that these chefs possess in making everything perfect. When molding the rice to wrapping it, and even the way the fish is cut to accentuate the taste of the fish it is all choreographed perfectly. The waitress was also extremely attentive and helpful in making our experience great. Overall an amazing experience. I definitely would want to go again with my family or friends. Standouts for me were the chawanmushi which is probably the best one I've ever had. Limited ingredients in the mixture really allowed for the flavors to be expressed even more in the dish. The chutoro is and HAS ALWAYS been my all-time favorite so you already know I loved it. The anago (eel) was melt-in-your mouth, and the chef did an amazing job of prepping certain seafood that I usually am not crazy about, yet everything tasted so good I have no complaints. LOL! The ambiance was exclusive. Counter seating only with a small private room in the corner. Albeit a little bit cramped once more people started trickling in, but a great experience to sit right in front of the chef and watch him do his thing. I hope Sushi Aki stays for a long long time forever because I will be dreaming of this omakase meal forever. LOL

Amazing omakase experience. Definitely going back!! Felt like we were in Japan again and everything was so delicious. Excellent service and intimate ambiance with regulars.

In fact I will give 4.5: A very small intimate sushi restaurant (had 7 seats at the counter plus one small room). We had 21 omakase course (but you can get your choice of bonus sushi so 22 in total) Sushi, Shirumono, tempura, and abalone were all good. I deducted 0.5 for Sazae because it was a bit salty by dipped soy sauce too long plus a waitress served tremendously hot tea so that I couldn't hold a cup. Overall it was a nice memorable omakase course, Mahalo

I absolutely love omakase so much; I wish we had more affordable options like on the mainland but Hawaii be a little different. I'd say Sushi Aki is average pricing but honestly pretty worth it in my opinion. Each bite was just 'melt in your mouth' delicious and what I loved that they do to stand out from other omakases is that for your last course, you get to choose which one you want that you tried earlier. They tell you this from the very beginning but you get so distracted by each piece, you forget to take a mental note and just want everything again. It is a bit hidden when you first look for them and you can easily get it confused with Japanese Restaurant Aki (because trust me, that's what we did; got sat and everything until we realized this wasn't the right place #awkward) you have to look for a wooden door which is right before the previously mentioned restaurant and gently push. The place is really small: couple bar seatings and one 'private room' for 4 people. I put quotes on private because people can still hear your conversations so you have to be mindful of what you say. Would I come here again? Heck yeah

Gift from the chef for my fiancés birthday.

And how do I know that it's fresh? Because as we were at the restaurant, deliveries were being delivered nonstop. My kids devoured the salmon bowl with the salmon roe. My 8 year old's bowl was wiped clean. My 7 year old had only 2 slices of salmon and a few ikuras left. The 5 year old polished off her few pieces of salmon and roe along with her miso soup. And momma's Fukuju? Absolutely demolished. I should have ordered it with extra ikura because the quality and flavor that it provided to the bowl was something that I've never had before. I am usually not a fan of ikura, finding it too salty, but the ikura at Totoya was perfectly balanced. Second, the service was great. I had to give it to the lovely staff who were able to keep it all together when a party of 5 adults and 7 kids (aged between 5 to 11) rolled in, and of course the kids all chose to not sit with their respective parents. The food came fast and kept the peace of very hungry children. The place itself is a small little restaurant with just bar seating, no more than 16 seats, so definitely cozy. My friend sitting all the way on the other side of the bar said she could hear my conversation perfectly well, even though all the kids were loudly chatting. We will definitely be back the next time we make it out to Honolulu. Thanks to the restaurant again for providing such a memorable meal. It was all I could think about on the flight home because it was that good.

This very much pleases my pescatarian preferences. I can enjoy every bite of the bento without having to pass a piece of chicken or beef to the hubby. And, I enjoy every bite down to the last kernel of multigrain rice. So far (because we're still working our way through the menu), we've enjoyed the noriben bento and the butterfish bentos (more than once). Both are worthy of a dine-in restaurant. The high-quality rice (trust me, you can tell) is a perfectly-cooked pillow for the assortment of bento toppings. They offer both white and multigrain rice. Hubby likes white. I enjoy the pleasant nutty, sweetness of the multigrain. The noriben bento includes a piece of salmon, ahi katsu, and a tempura-furikake fish cake. A generous portion of shredded nori covers the rice and an assortment of pickled veggies compliments the sweet corn. Not only is this bento pretty, it is amazingly balanced in taste and texture. A feast for the eyes and the palate! But, the butterfish bento is the real showstopper. A very generous serving of carefully sliced, richly marinated butterfish tops your choice of rice. The hubby said it's probably the BEST butterfish he's ever had. And, I totally agree with him! Because of the way they slice the fish, the marinade saturates the filets and then it's grilled so the sauce caramelizes just enough to give a sweet and smoky flavor. SO ONO! Like I mentioned, the shop is small but if you get there early, it's full of bentos (fish, chicken, katsu pork, and hamburger steak), assorted musubis and inari, as well as sushi cups. They even offer desserts by Malu Honolulu. What a great collab! Every nook and cranny of this little shop is full of food prepared with thought and care. Only three people are allowed in the shop at a time, so there is sometimes a line outside. Don't worry! It goes fast, and it's SO WORTH the wait. Not surprisingly, they sell out. But if you don't think you're going to make it there early, you can call to order and schedule a pick up. Service is always very friendly and accommodating. Higoto is located on the first floor of Kaimuki Shopping Center on Waialae Avenue (by Times Supermarket next to Sacred Hearts). Parking is free and ample. Really, there is NO good reason to not give Higoto Japanese Eatery a try. You definitely won't be disappointed.

Scared to enter this high end sushi restaurant due to the exorbitant omakase prices? Well don't be! They won't give you the Pretty Woman treatment and from the hours of 1:30-5:00 (last call 4;30) it is quite affordable. So happy to finally try the Happy Hour here with a friend I haven't seen in ages. It was perfect since the restaurant was pretty empty the day we went, which gave us leisurely time to talk. The decor is simple and elegant in an understated Japanese way. We were therefore puzzled by the paper towels we got instead of napkins. I'm hoping it's because they ran out and not because they downgraded for happy hour. The happy hour menu (the only menu offered during those hours) is limited but it was just right for us. We started with lemon sours ($6) which came in heavy generous sized hammered "glasses" with fresh lemons. Refreshing and not watered down! The menu mainly consists of 2 choices of ramen, 3 choices of mini don (rice bowls), toppings, and a scattering of otsumami (side dishes), good to nibble on when drinking. The drink menu had a little of everything. We each got a yuzu shio ramen which was " muah!" with its perfectly al dente noodles, light but umami broth (that did not seem to have msg), garnished with a soft yolked ajitsuke tamago, chicken charsiu, menma (bamboo shoots), nori, and leeks for a balanced combination of tastes and textures! We shared a mentaiko don since we both love the salty fishy egg sacs! I also got the tako wasa which was fresh and cleared the sinuses. My friend got the tamagoyaki. We left with full and happy bellies! I want to bring my aunty here next since happy hour is when seniors eat dinner. 4.5 stars rounded rounded down to 4 because our server came to ask us for last call one minute before happy hour ended. Otherwise great prices for great food , drinks, and ambiance!

I got an extra side of tartar sauce for $1.15. It was very good, especially their karaage chicken, as good as any that I've ever eaten. Curry is good, if a bit mild, as it is neither sweet ( as one would expect from Japanese curry ) nor spicy like Thai/Viet/Indian curries. You can find Minatoku Kitchen on the corner of South King Street and Hausten Street - across from Long's. Side street parking ( good luck ) or the lot at Long's. Ordered via the Clover app. It was ready as I walked in a couple of minutes before the time I requested.

Since we moved, I've passed by there numerous times, but never went in. Looking at the menu, one…read morething caught my eye: Stewed Hamburger Steak Bento - ground beef | ground pork | onions | salad | mushrooms | handmade mashed potatoes | handmade demi-glace sauce | handmade pickles | 100% Japanese Koshihikari rice I know what local-style hamburger steak means to me, but "stewed hamburger steak" sparked my curiosity. Initially I intended to order to go, but after I paid (it's credit card only - no cash), she asked if this was takeout or eat-in. I changed my mind and said I would eat there. There were no other customers at the time, so I sat at one of the tables. Within what seemed like a couple of minutes, she brought over a glass of water and the food to my table. When I paid, I didn't factor in table service, so, feeling bad, I look through my wallet but only had two dollar bills and the rest were larger. I got a five out and asked the server if I could get change. She replied that she was sorry they didn't have change. My mistake, at that moment, I had forgotten about the no cash policy. Back to the meal, the hamburgers appeared to be two fair-sized meatballs. They had been stewed in their version of demi-glace sauce. There was a small portion of what looked like potato salad, some edamame, and a vegetable salad with a vinegary dressing. I couldn't easily make out the rest of the ingredients in the list. To my taste, the meal was fairly good. Before leaving, I cleared my table of the plastic fork and disposable chopsticks. No one was at the counter, so I placed the empty plate and glass of water near the counter with the small bills - my way of apologizing for my lack of change.

The sauce they use for the katsu is a familiar taste; they use bull-dog sauce. The dressing tastes like the dressing from Sams Club. I don't remember it being this way. Maybe they changed? I feel like Koromo and Tamafuji are better. I guess maybe this place is considered a take out spot? It's pretty much serve yourself water, bottle drinks only and order at the counter. The place is clean and wasn't busy. You're most likely going to have to get street parking or go to the paid parking area and walk around a little bit. If you want an OK katsu place, I guess this is the place.
