    Came here for a birthday dinner and each bite was phenomenal! Especially liked the engawa with shiso and katsuo nigiri. We were, however, perplexed by the automatic 20% service charge because the receipt says auto-applied to parties of 6 but we were only a party of two. Service was good though so we didn't ask about it. Would come again for a special occasion.

    An experience at Amaterasu Sushi, one of the newer omakase spots located in Ala Moana Center right next to Barnes & Noble. The ambience is very quiet and intimate with only a limited number of seats available at the sushi counter, though I opted to sit at a table instead. The setting felt calm and relaxed, which made the dining experience really enjoyable. The fish was as fresh as it gets and each piece was neatly and beautifully presented. You can tell care went into both the quality of the ingredients and the presentation of the omakase and the dishes were so cute and unique. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience and definitely a spot I'd come back to when craving a solid omakase in town.

    What an amazing Omakase restaurant! They are fairly new but are definitely on top of their game with great food and service! They are located on the ground floor inbetween Barnes and Noble and Macy's. We were seated by Katie, our hostess, who is super friendly and whom we had a conversation with the whole time we were there. The pictures of the food is not enough to express how good it was. The fish was fresh, the chefs personal creations were yummy, and both the chef abd hostess were great to talk to! You really feel like you are part of a family. The flavors were delicious. The restaurant is clean. And the prices are good compared to many other locations. You won't be disappointed if you go. They were also super sweet and gave me a scoop of their homemade yuzu ice cream for my birthday! Definitely a place to check out if you're looking for an omakase place.

    Always walked passed Amaterasu when we go Ala Moana and today was the day we were finally able to go! The inside is a nice lux interior, but makes you feel cozy at the same time. My boyfriend and I opted for the standard omakase (dinner) and it was $150 for 15 courses! Honestly, 100% worth it. Everything tasted so refined and delicious. My favorites were any of the smoked/torched sushi. It gave the sushi another layer of taste and texture. I also wanted to mention that out of all omakase places I've been to, over here has the best minced chutoro handroll. I almost wanted to eat another one, but my stomach would have exploded LOL. Overall, I would totally come back. The owner and staff are super sweet. Also reservations are easy to make on opentable!!

    We had a totally mind-blowing Omakase meal that was right up there with the big boys in Tokyo. The Sake dispenser was like something out of a sci-fi movie - totally mesmerizing. Every piece was crafted with ninja-like precision.

    Came here for the lunch omakase, which included an appetizer, chawanmushi, 10 pieces of nigiri, and miso soup. Everything tasted fresh. Standouts bites for me were the Hokkaido uni, scallop, king salmon, and the chef's signature Kaua'i shrimp topped with uni garlic butter. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5: a few of the nigiri pieces had too much wasabi, which overpowered the fish, and the appetizer felt a bit forgettable. Service was friendly but there were some awkward moments when our server tried to clear plates before we were finished. Still, a great option if you're looking for edomae-style sushi.

    Amazing sushi by sushi chef Hide! Everything from beginning to end was perfection. Hard to pick a favorite one since they were all so good. We came here to celebrate my mom's birthday and they made the experience so special! We did the omakase which includes 15 courses (10 nigiri). It's a $150 per person which is not bad. The sushi just melts in your mouth. I really enjoyed the salmon, chutoro, Kaua'i shrimp nigiri topped with uni garlic butter and the chawanmushi. I was content with the amount of food we got but definitely could have eaten a few more lol. The atmosphere is elegant and intimate but you can also dress casual if you want. What's great is that it's located in Ala Moana (former Arby's) so you don't have to worry about parking. One of the best sushi I've had in a long time!

    This is my favorite Omakase restaurant in Honolulu. I know the lower level of the Ala Moana doesn't sound appealing but trust me it is nice inside and has a beautiful Japanese style sushi bar. It's always fun sitting down for an omakase experience just because you have no idea what will be served. I enjoyed everything I had and I cannot wait to go back. Price wasn't bad either for the quality. I think including tip I paid around $120. Made a friend next to me at the bar so I will be meeting him there again soon.

    My boyfriend surprised me with this lovely Omakase spot. We had a reservation for 5pm and came about 10 minutes earlier. The spot was near the Barnes and Nobles in parking garage area of the mall. We were sat at the sushi bar and was offered some delicious tea. We had the 15 course omakase meal and it was a delightful experience! The sushi chef and the server were very nice and we were explained what we were eating throughout the entire meal. Keep in mind, they do change courses while keeping some others. Everything tasted super fresh! The blue fin tuna and the uni was personally my favorite. It melted in my mouth. My boyfriend loved the egg! It was full of so much flavor. A great experience to try was the uni garlic butter shrimp! I've never heard of such a thing but it was really good! Definitely recommend this place if you are looking for an omakase spot around the area!

    Just WOW! This was my first meal when I landed in O'ahu and it did not disappoint! The fish was so fresh, reminded me of good Japan grade sushi. We ordered sake as well and they brought out a chilled sake dispenser which was pretty cool to look at. I never had sardines in an omakase set before so this was my first time and it was so soft and buttery, melted in my mouth. 10/10 would come again.

    Amazing! I took a risk by coming to this restaurant to try the Omakase with my friends. My best friend was visiting from Atlanta and wanted to try Omakase because she had never gone to one. I've been to a couple on the island, but this has moved up to my top 3! It's located at Ala Moana, right next to Barnes and Nobles so parking is easy. We had the first dinner service at 5PM (FYI they do book up fast so make sure you keep an eye out on open table). The service was absolutely impeccable. It all started before we even got through the door. We were waiting outside for the last person in our party to show up when the hostess came out and asked if we had reservations. We said yes and she told us to wait inside while we wait for the rest of our party. The restaurant is small and intimate. We were sat at the counter where it can host seven guests. There is a table behind the counter that can host a party of about eight people. It was comfortable and not too tight. The hostess helps the chef serve so she came to take our drinks. We got hot tea and suntory beer. We had the 15 course omakase for $150 and it was prepared right in front of us. It was great watching him prepare all the food. It was so fresh and I'm so glad you explained each one. The selections differ based on what's available. The winners were the Otoro - it melted like butter in your mouth. Then the Uni Gunkan and Kauai Shrimp with Uni Garlic Butter. Oh my good the Uni was perfectly salty and sweet and melted in your mouth. And the Uni Garlic Butter that is torched onto the Kauai shrimp was absolute heaven. I would go back specifically to get that. I say this because I love Uni and I was just blown away with how the sweet Uni stood out and wasn't over powered by the Garlic or salt from the shrimp or butter. The hostess was amazing with making sure our drinks were never empty and always checked in on us. At the end, the hostess will ask if you want to order anything that was served during the omakase so you can enjoy it one last time. And of course we did! The biggest downside was the temperature. It was set at 80 degrees so it was a bit warm. Overall, I really enjoyed it and would go back again. I would love to try the 13 course Lunch menu for $98. The difference is that you may not get speciality seafood, but I still feel it'd be a great experience.

    This might be one of my favorite if not my favorite sushi omakase places in town. Every single item was delicious and enjoyable. Nice intimidate ambiance without feeling restricted. Chef Hide and our server Katie were friendly and they joked around with us and the other 5 diners that night. The price was the standard pricing for omakase these days $150pp. Yeah so it was a perfect evening! Chef Hide started off with an appetizer with crab, amaebi and abalone with liver paste. The crab was alright but everything else on that small plate was delish. I never had liver paste to go with abalone, what a great way to combine savory with sweetness! The items we had included shima-aji (striped jack), king salmon, deep sea bass, Japanese sardine, flounder with shiso, Mehikari (greeneye fish) tempura, chawanmushi with ikura, shrimp, crab and fish, uni nigiri, Hotate, toro, tsuke-maguro, Kaua'i shrimp with garlic uni butter, temaki with chopped toro and pickled radish, and finally miso soup to conclude our 15-course meal. First I gotta say the fish was of high quality cut by a highly skilled chef. There wasn't even a small bit of stringiness to the fish. Every piece was melt in your mouth with the best cut. I initially was taken aback by being served salmon, but that piece of king salmon was very fresh and delicious. I was pleasantly surprised by how good sardine tasted. I thought it would be smelly and fishy but it blended well with the other top quality sashimi. It's my first time having Mehikari. It's fried whole and the whole thing including bones and head were all edible. It's crispy on the outside and the meat was soft with a light sweetness. Very enjoyable and a good break from all the raw stuff. I've only made fried shishamo myself before and initially I thought that's what I was served, but luckily it's not so I could have a new experience. Now it made me want to try frying Mehikari! Their chawanmushi was one of the best I've had because it had the perfect consistency - not too watery and not too thick but still smooth. I appreciated all the goodies inside as well - all seafood! The uni was of top grade - not melting to liquid, sweet, savory, could be more firm but given the time it took to ship from Japan to Hawaii, we can't expect it to be super duper fresh but still very fresh! I normally don't like maguro coz it's not fatty enough, but the cut was really good, smooth and melt in your mouth, great taste with the marinade and the jalapeño sauce as well! The garlic uni butter also went really well with the crunchy cooked Kaua'i shrimp. And finally the temaki (hand roll) was the best hand roll I've had. Chef was fanning the nori over an open flame to make it extra crispy. The chopped toro and the pickled daikon together made a great flavorful combo. I thought my hubby was eating chips when he bit into his hand roll! Also, I love wasabi so I do appreciate how he's not stingy with it. But if you don't like it, make sure you let the chef know because I find him to be more generous with wasabi than other chefs. As for drinks, they chilled their beer glasses with a special freezer so they would have frost on the surface after pouring the beer so you know your beer will be kept cold! It's rare for me to love everything I ate at a 15-course meal. The food, the ambiance, the service, and how it's so convenient at the mall as well. The only downside was the lack of bathroom inside the restaurant (you have to go to the mall or other stores for it) so make sure you go before you start a 2-hour meal. I usually would wanna try a new restaurant especially if it's a special occasion meal, but I might just come back again because I don't know if I will like other sushi places as much...! ありがとうございます Chef Hide and Katie for a wonderful evening!

    Not anymore. The restaurant has started their curated alcohol beverage menu in February. You may still bring your own bottle but there will be a corkage fee.

    The building its self has a very few and limited visitor parking stalls on the ground floor. Tip: if all the appropriate spots are taken, park in another stall and ask inside what you should do while telling them where you are parked!

I decided to finally go out of my usual choices and try Ginza out. Ginza is located in the main ward building (the one with the theater), on the side, between Men's Warehouse and L&L. We got seated fairly quickly and was given water. Upon ordering we were also given edamame to nom on while we waited. We also decided to order two rolls, an AAB combo set to try a variety of things and fried calamari for food measure. We got: * Jen's Paradise: 9.7/10, heavily recommend. I was really craving sear salmon and it definitely helped to satisfy that craving. I didn't realize that the roll part itself ONLY has shrimp tempura within the nori (no crab salad, avo, etc). * Bomb: 8/10, clearly I lacked my reading comprehension skills this day because I didn't realize that this was baked... so when it came out and the entire roll was fully cooked I was heart broken. It tasted good, just not what I particular want at a sushi restaurant. * Chicken Karaage: 5/10. I do NOT recommend this. They remined me of mochiko chicken, but these were not very meaty or flavorful. * Fried Calamari: 10/10, fried to perfectly in my opinion, each piece was plump and delicious. * Miso Butterfish: 8.9/10, it was good, flaky and flavorful. Just not something I would order again, but it was good to try esp it is something they're supposedly known for. * Mixed Tempura: 10/10, yum I love mixed tempura, no notes, it was hot and crunchy. I would like to mention that our wait was quite long. I don't know why because they weren't like SUPER busy. It took 10-15 for us to get the miso soup and salad for the combo. +5 for the calamari, +5 for the first roll then a few minutes after for the rest. I feel like 15-20 minutes for our first actual item (calamari) to come is kind of crazy, it kept being brought to the wrong table (2-3 times). Our server apologized so its not a huge deal. Otherwise, I still enjoyed our experience. I would definitely come back again to try the rolls I would enjoy more (utilizing my reading skills a bit better LOL).

At one point they served kinki fish and jokingly explained that the English translation sometimes gets called "idiot fish," which got everyone laughing at the counter. The omakase is definitely on the pricier side, but the quality, presentation, and overall experience made it very satisfying. If you're looking for a refined sushi experience with great service and beautifully crafted bites, this place is worth the splurge.
