We enjoyed tempura omakase in Japan and were extremely excited to find this restaurant in Hawaii and were not disappointed. From the moment we stepped into the space we felt an ambiance of Japan! Everything was perfectly set. The hostess was very accommodating and hospitable. Our servers were enthusiastic and very professional in how they explained every dish. Service can only be described as absolutely perfect! The dishes were like works of art. The tempura was very light and delicious. Every single dish was delectable and cooked to perfection. And there were a lot of dishes - we were stuffed. We cannot wait to return!

Matcha ice cream. Not a very satisfying finish after eating tempura fried foods. I would have preferred fresh fruit.

Three stars? Wow, where is Randy going with this review? First .... On their restaurant website, ichikahawaii.com, they are bragging ... "Michelin-star chef adds sizzle to Honolulu's refined dining scene ...". " -Honolulu's only full-time resident Michelin chef ...". If you're going to name drop Michelin then the food better live up to the expectation. Chef Kiyoshi Chikano did not initially earn the Michelin Star for Tempura Matsui in NYC but he certainly helped maintain that Michelin Star status. But .... Michelin never has covered Honolulu. There are no restaurants or chefs in Honolulu with a hint of current Michelin accolade in it's annual publications. So, "full-time resident Michelin chef ..." on their website is BS to me. And, btw, another full-time chef resident, Chef Ki Chung, at Bar Maze Honolulu, was the Chef de Cuisine who actually led Aubergine, in Carmel, to its initial Michelin Star. So why a three star review? The food and service did not live up to expectations. Service. We had a very good bottle of champagne. When poured, one glass displayed a proper ring of lively fine micro bubbles that lasted a long time. A second glass had large flaccid bubbles that reluctantly rose to the top - a sign of a glass that was not properly wiped clean after washing. The second freshly poured glass of champagne looked DOA. The server(s) and manager never noticed until it was pointed out. We were subsequently given new glasses with each new pour, but again, some glasses were not properly cleaned. Food. The hallmark of a tempura chef is the ability to balance the temperature and mix of oil so each item is sealed in the batter and gets to steam to perfection. The batter must be mixed to the degree that it consistently and evenly coats the entire surface of a piece. The presentation must be consistent from start to finish. It is alright for delicate pieces or cut vegetables with a lot of moisture to show a darker brown on the edges. But an uneven color is telling. Several of the tempura I was served had a shades darker brown color and some specks of dark batter indicating any of - the temperature wasn't consistent, pieces were overcrowded, the batter was over-mixed, the pieces were cooked too long, the oil was breaking down. The first vegetable, renkon, was overcooked. The color was at the edge of dark brown, not pale light. The pieces were not crisp. The final tempura piece, anago, was clearly several shades of dark brown with actual burnt edges. Not only was it a clear sign of the probable problem causes mentioned previously, but it was a direct reflection of the chef's pride in his work. My experience is not out of the ordinary. I looked at the food photos of every Yelp friend I have who has posted a review of Tempura Ichika. I saw the same problems in their photos. If you've never had a tempura omakase before you may not care or notice. And there is no other place in Honolulu to make a comparison. Go if you want to try tempura omakase and start to understand what you should experience in Japan. But skip any upsells or post-meal add-ons here. And stick to the cheap liquor if you need a buzz.

Fascinating! I went here with a group of friends to enjoy a nice omakase tempura dining experience. They serve about 18 courses of tempura. The service was outstanding. Great choice of sake. Go here to get pampered.

I think i counted 20 dishes for the tempura omakase. Yes 20 very amazing, light, yummy dishes. Not all were fried, some were clean refreshing in-between tempura dishes. Service was exceptional and staff were themost welcoming and attentive as could be. A wonderful dining experience.

I glad that all theses Japanese chefs are coming to Hawaii to open a restaurant. This is the Best tempura I've had so far. Every dish was incredible. Only sad thing that happened was they ran out of sushi. LOL But the sushi we did get was delicious. Well worth trying. this chef came from a Michelin star restaurant.

A multiple course meal. Sake was served throughout the night. The restaurant is small with limited seating, must make reservations. Everything served was delicious and fulfilling. The night ended with tea and dessert. The service was impeccable. The bathroom was clean with heated seats.

One of our favorite places for celebration dinners! Yoko and staff delivers an excellent dining experience! You'll not only be treated to a unique dining experience, excellent service and fresh hot dishes that delight all your senses. Everything comes out fresh! What an amazing tempura omakase meal from Michelin Chef Kiyoshi Chikano. We will be back!!! Thank you!!!

Exquisite! Truly a delightful omakase experience, worthy of your time and attention. What better way to celebrate or simply enjoy a lovely evening. While this establishment is no longer BYOB, they offer a marvelous selection of beverages. You are allowed to bring in something that they don't sell, for a small corkage fee. As anticipated, all the seafood dishes were succulent and well prepared. We really appreciated the fresh slices and careful presentation. Chef has a superb attention to detail and each of our servers did a remarkable job with information and serving. This establishment takes great pride in using the finest ingredients and fresh oil for each tempura. My friend noted how light and crisp each tempura dish was. He especially liked the Hokkaido crab dish, as did I. We appreciated the delicate seasoning, whether it was sea salt, konbu salt, or my favorite, the curry salt. That paired especially well with the cauliflower tempura. Excellent food and extremely polite customer service. Clean dining area with crisp lighting and decor. We will most certainly return!

My boyfriend made a reservation for two. We arrived on a weekday night for 7:30pm dinner. It was a 2.5 hour course meal. We were fortunate enough to come during their one year anniversary. The Asahi beer was $3 each, which was amazing. I have a crustacean allergy and they were able to accommodate my allergy issue. Overall this was a nice experience, but my boyfriend and I realized that tempura omakase is not for us. We didn't feel too strongly about the tempura pieces they gave us except the uni piece and the vegetable tempura which you had to pay extra to get. Service was excellent, but it felt a bit long. A lot of folks ended up ordering drinks nonstop and getting lit. I was full from eating my food while drinking one beer. It's a nice and clean ambiance inside with limited seating.

We had dinner at Tempura Ichika since it was such a unique experience, and it was wonderful. The staff were amazing and it was great enjoying the tempura courses one piece at a time so everything was fresh and hot. The seasonings provided to use for some of the dishes, such as the curry salt, were also delicious. The experience took just over two hours in total, and we really enjoyed it.

Hands down the best meal of our last trip to HNL! First discovered Ichika from a post on IG. The pictures of the restaurant had me sold and knew we had to make reservations which wasn't too difficult. There is a small lot behind which we luckily scored a spot otherwise, you'll have to find something on Piikoi or the surrounding area. As you enter, you are warmly greeted by the hosts and shown your spot on the 12 person boomerang shaped table. Everyone seated is served the same tempura omakase course which was outstanding. We thoroughly enjoyed every course and left satisfied. Service was perfect and exactly what you'd expect while in Japan. To be honest, I think the meal was almost as good as our meal at Uchitsu in Tokyo. Will definitely be back and may try their sushi restaurant next trip out.

The space is really nice. It's small and intimate so you can make friends with your neighbor. We're all there sharing in the same experience and what an experience it was. Before I go further, I must say the wine list and alcohol is priced extremely fairly, with barely any mark up which is really awesome. So you can feel good about buying a bottle of wine or sake to enjoy with your meal and know you weren't price gouged. All the dishes were exceptional. It's hard to make everything eye catching so the pictures really don't do it justice. The servers were sweet and accommodating and really explained everything quite well. The matcha ice cream was a nice finish, but we didn't quite understand why some people got matcha cake as well. It sounded like they were there to celebrate something so next time we know to say you're celebrating something so you get a slice of cake in addition to your ice cream. While it's under stable the price can be a deterrent for some it's an experience worth having.

We were looking for a good sit down for my birthday dinner and found 2 openings for 7:30seating. The omakase course was pretty straight forward in terms of quality to match the environment, service and price. Additional items/special offerings could be ordered at additional price. Their tempura are all lightly flowered/battered. Served with radish/dipping sauce, sea salt, matcha salt and curry flavor salts Overall a good experience, everything was prepped with care and attention, service was very attentive. Unfortunately, for me, I guess I was looking for flavors that would pop and excite my pallet. The only thing I found here was their fried sliced potato. Everything was as expected at a Restruant at this caliber.

There are meals one enjoys. Meals one admires. Meals one respectfully documents, notes the flavor balance of, and later describes using words like "elegant" and "well-executed." And then there are meals that rock your world. This was one of them. Kaiten sushi, or conveyor belt sushi, is a casual, affordable Japanese dining style invented in 1958 where plates of sushi rotate on a motorized belt passing diners, allowing them to select dishes directly. Here at Kaiten Sushi Ginza Onodera, it's not the typical catwalk of pre-made maki rolls, nigiri, and other offering. You order off a kiosk and then it is fast-tracked to your table via sushi belt. Here at Kaiten Sushi Ginza Onodera, you are granted the ability to try their Edomae-style sushi for a more affordable price. Edomae-style sushi is a traditional Tokyo cuisine originating in the 1820s, featuring seafood, often cured, marinated, or simmered, served atop rice seasoned with red vinegar (akasu). It focuses on enhancing fish flavor through technique rather than just raw freshness, historically acting as fast food for 19th-century Edo residents. I'd go again, but maybe once a year similar to many people that've gone here.

We are staying at the hotel, Prince Waikiki, and based on the rave reviews, we expected a flawless, high-end meal. While the restaurant looks clean and accurately mimics a true Japan dining atmosphere, the kitchen execution and lack of basic customer service completely ruined our celebration. My husband ordered the Yokozuna set and 2 Kanimiso Gunkans, and I ordered the Ozeki set (we both substituted our Ikura, and he got the Big Shrimp). While chewing his premium Toro, my husband hit a massive fish bone. It was huge, a legitimate, dangerous choking hazard. For a restaurant charging top-dollar for high-grade tuna, a bone of that size getting past a sushi chef is completely unacceptable. When my husband showed the bone to our waitress, she just casually said she would "inform the chefs." That was it. No manager ever came over, no one apologized, and they didn't even adjust our bill. We were forced to pay full premium price for a dish that nearly choked my husband. The pacing was completely mismatched. My husband's food arrived almost immediately, but my Ozeki set took an incredibly long time to come out. Because he didn't want to start eating without me on our first date, his sushi just sat on the table getting warm. The kitchen was running painfully slow, which made no sense because the restaurant wasn't even fully seated yet. Just that little moment left a bad impression and would have been worse if my husband choked. I honestly could have just went to genki sushi, never gotten bones in my fish there. Overall, sushi was good but not something to rave over. to pay that much for sushi I was expecting more, and this fell flat.

After walking around, the hostess asked if we had a reservation. I gave her my name, but she said we didn't have one, even though the restaurant was nearly empty. She then explained that our reservation was actually at their sister restaurant around the other side of the building. We went over there and found that it was primarily a sushi restaurant, which wasn't really what we were looking for. We had expected more of an izakaya-style experience, so we canceled the reservation and returned to the original restaurant. Once seated, the service was good and our server was attentive throughout the meal. One thing that was a little confusing was that sushi and sashimi had to be ordered from the sister restaurant, even though we were dining in the other restaurant. The food was brought over and served to us without any issues, and there were no problems with the bill, but it took us a while to understand how the two restaurants operated together. We ordered several dishes, including chicken skin wrapped gyoza, crab tempura, an assorted sashimi platter, a cream cheese and fish roe appetizer served with toast, an egg dish topped with fish roe, chicken karaage, and the miso butterfish. The highlights for me were the chicken karaage, miso butterfish, and gyoza. I enjoyed them enough to order another round of the gyoza and chicken. That said, many of the dishes leaned toward the sweeter side of Japanese cuisine, which just isn't my personal preference. If you enjoy those flavors, your experience may be different. Overall, the food was good, the service was solid, and there were a few standout dishes. The confusion with the reservation, entrance setup, and relationship between the two restaurants got the evening off to an awkward start, but the meal improved once we were seated. I'm not really a Japanese food person, so four stars is probably the highest rating I could realistically give a Japanese restaurant. With that in mind, I thought they did a good job, and there were a few dishes I would consider ordering again.

My fiance won a gift card actually 2 of them (from his coworker whom could not get a reservation secured), we knew we had to make the trip over before they officially close. We had multiple dishes, but staff made Kauai prawns and tomato miso black cod dishes on the house since they ran out the Hokkaido scallops. We ordered the short ribs, lobster appetizer, hamachi crudo and lastly sashimi moriawase to finish food palate. Lukki lemon dessert was great way to end to night. Ordered the Milk tea bouquet cocktail while my better half had water ( either way the food coma knock him out cold the rest of the night lol). To be honest, it was difficult to determine which dish was the best because the staff kept quality there despite it being busy every night since they announce the closure. Sashimi moriawase, fish was so fresh, reminded me of my time spent in Hokkaido and Sapporo. Short ribs was soft and rich in flavor. Both me and my fiance liked the lukki lemon dessert, like lemon meringue pie but broken down version. If you have a chance to dine here before closing and got a reservation, definitely will have a lovely dining experience and your stomach will be full by end of the night.

The Corn Beignets was the best. - For entree we got: Tomato Miso Black Cod and the Short Rib. Both were delicious and worth a try. Sad to see that this restaurant appears to be closing.

It was quiet loud when they welcomed guests which wasn't easy to handle but I understood why they were doing that. Loved the presentation of our choices which we took pics of. Thank you for a fun evening. We'll be back next year.

Every piece of sushi was beautifully presented not overwhelming. You can really tell the chefs put a lot of thought into the balance of flavors and textures. One of my favorite bites was a sashimi piece topped with something that looked like finely grated cheese (not sure what it actually was), but it melted perfectly with the fish and added a really unique savory flavor. The chefs and staff also had a good sense of humor. At one point they served kinki fish and jokingly explained that the English translation sometimes gets called "idiot fish," which got everyone laughing at the counter. The omakase is definitely on the pricier side, but the quality, presentation, and overall experience made it very satisfying. If you're looking for a refined sushi experience with great service and beautifully crafted bites, this place is worth the splurge.

DOMO Café, you do NOT disappoint! Domo's Kahala location has quickly become our go-to, grab-and-go…read moresushi joint. Although they have a clean and comfortable space for dining in, we regularly stop by after church or on the weekends for something to savor at our favorite park. Seriously, it's easy to enjoy their bowls, sushi sets, or bentos anytime and anyplace. We've got a passion for this place. Here's how this love affair started...I discovered Domo when a friend invited me for some sushi and sips at her place. I was amazed at the beautiful platter of sushi that accompanied our sake and wine. My friends are the best hosts! I devoured the bombs, nigiris and rolls (in between sips!). Everything was simply delicious! Fast forward a few months, I order a couple sushi sets to host a poolside, golden-hour birthday get together at my other friend's home. (I know, you want to be part of this squad, right?!). Anyway, using the online order system is a snap! My hubby went in to pick up the sushi and said they were slammed but our sushi sets were ready to go. This time we ordered some ikura because the hubby and my bestie are big fans. Both agree it was fresh and fantastic! And the garlic set with the flash-seared fish and a hint of mayo is a MUST-try. We also ordered a California roll for my friend's aunt who is not really a sushi fan. She delighted in several pieces and even enjoyed the nigiri from the garlic set. Total convert! After enjoying the platters and sets, we had to try the bentos and bowls. This time it's just us and the pup at the park. The bentos provide a great variety and comes with miso soup. The hubby really likes the shrimp tempura with ahi and salmon nigiri and ahi poke. It's a steal at less than $20. I'm a bowl girl myself and like the spicy tempura. The tempura is cooked crisp yet tender. The spicy ahi poke combined with the creamy crab salad and the crunchy ocean salad delights all my tastes buds. It's truly an adventure in finding the perfect bite--and there are so many in this bowl! I also love the seared salmon bowl. It is melt-in-your-mouth goodness. I add the fried onions for some texture. You know a place is top-notch when you can feel confident that anything off their menu will satisfy your cravings. Because this is a Yelp review, here are some helpful tips. For sushi platters, pre-order. The online system is simple to use. Service is fast and efficient if you're just walking in for a quick bite or to grab something to go. Parking has always been easy for us to find in the small lot in the complex where Domo is located. It's right next to Assagio's Kahala. But if you're worried about parking, I suggest ordering in advance and then just picking up. This works great during peak dining hours. If you want fresh, delicious sushi that is reasonably priced be like us and visit Domo Café. You will probably also be like us and want to go back to try more.
