If there's one thing about me, it's that I love an izakaya. Open late and small plates so you can try a few different things, my favorite! I've been to Mitch's a few times and when I saw that they opened up an Izakaya next door, I knew I had to try it and made a reservation on Yelp. Izakaya Mitch's specializes more in cooked dishes while the other side is more about the fresh / raw fish. But that didn't stop us from ordering the assorted sashimi. All the fish were from Japan and yes you can taste the difference. The fatty tuna was obviously my favorite but even the regular tuna and the hamachi was so buttery, it just melts in your mouth. Plus, it comes with real wasabi. Not horseradish, real wasabi. For the cooked dishes we got the hokkaido crab tempura with a side of matcha salt. One of the best tempuras I've ever had. The kamameshi, a rice dish with their fish of the day. We got the half order and it's kinda like a bibimbap where they mix the rice for you at your table. I saw that people were raving about this on Yelp and put in our order right when we got in because it takes 25-ish minutes to prepare. On special, they had a karei karaage. Karei is a flat fish and I've never had a fish karaage before, it was perfectly fried and dipped in the ponzu sauce it was so good. Ambiance is a no-frills kinda spot but very clean and feels homey and the service is amazing! Attentive and super personable. read more

So happy there is an izakaya that we don't have to drive to downtown or Waikiki. Izakaya Mitch's is close to the airport in the industrial area. I made reservations, so we were seated right away. Luckily, it wasnʻt crowded when we sat, so our waitress was able to answer all our questions about different dishes we were interested in ordering. Our party of 3 got to try different things from the specials and regular menu. The tai karaage was so tender and seasoned really well, the kamameshi is such a comfort dish, and the burrata with chilled tomato was really refreshing. One thing we all liked was that even though there were a lot of people in the restaurant (most came in after we ordered), we still were able to speak to one another without talking loud. Dinner in Honolulu, Hawaii... This Hot New Business popped up on my Yelp app: Izakaya Mitch's It sounded good, so I asked my friend to go with me... yay! We found free street parking across the street and walked in. We didn't have a reservation and luckily, there were a few open tables on a Wednesday night. Located on the corner of Ohohia Street and Ualena Street, Mitch's Sushi (where President Obama ate) is right next door. The interior is spacious and bright! There's nice artwork on the walls! In the back corner, there's a convenient restroom. Service was efficient and friendly! We shared the Hokkaido Crab Tempura with matcha salt on National Tempura Day! It was delicious! I had the Uzaku - cucumber, vinegar, and unagi. I liked this refreshing dish! The Fish of the day (hamachi) kamameshi was a bit disappointing because it was on the bland side. I did appreciate the few mushrooms mixed into the steamed rice. The Buttered Hotate with Asparagus did not disappoint. I only wish there were more scallops and asparagus! Yum! We went to check out Mitch's Restaurant newly opened Izakaya! It was confusing, because I didn't realize that it was 2 separate restaurants and I made reservations to Mitch's and we we got to the parking lot it had a sign Mitch's Izakaya use other entrance around the building? I went into check and the Hostess told me I had reservations for Mitch's Restaurant and they only serve sushi & sashimi items. I mentioned to her that I did not know it was 2 separate restaurant and that my wife doesn't eat raw seafood, because the last time we went she only could eat the miso soup. I asked her If we could move our reservations to the Izakaya side, because I didn't know it was 2 separate restaurant and she kindly talked to the other side and got us seating at the Izakaya side! The staff on both sides were very friendly and helpful. We ordered a lot of everything and more that was on the menu and the special board from assorted sashimi plates it was so good we had 4 orders, the tempura Tako was cooked and seasoned just right and ordered 4 of that also and the Parmesan cheese French fries was also a hit and had to order 3 and the karage fried chicken was also tender and crispy but moist inside we had to order 4 of that and fried pigs feet was crispy and moist and it was delicious and Hokkaido Crab salad was also very good which we all just shared 1 the Tamago with ikura was also good we had 2 of that and many other items which we were not disappointed, but you need to try the homemade dessert they use lilikoi & Poha berry and put it with ice cream which was delicious, Also I didn't know that the Izakaya restaurant has a liquor license and Mitch's didn't have and for years it was byob will Mitch's Restaurant is still byob, but the Izakaya restaurant side either you need to pay corkage or order from the bar. What a beautiful hidden gem outside the city right next to the airport amongst all the overpriced over sold Waikiki joints that aren't even half worth it!! This is actually our second time here and it did not disappoint one bit!! Locals spot, very non pretentious. I'm gonna start taking my guests here not looking for the bougie type experience after I pick them up from the airport. Genuinely fantastic service from our server D!!! Authentic real aloha, thank you if you're reading this! FOOD! I am the type that will come back to most establishments even if the service is bad just for the food. Let me just say, I actually would do that for this place. An izakaya that offers menu items not typical to what you'd find in the white washed world - saba kamameshi (beautiful pot of simmered rice plus mackerel with a soy broth), wasabi okra, and karei (flounder) karaage with sauces to make izakaya proud. Definitely a spot worth dining at. As other Yelpers mentioned, the lighting is a bit brighter than your typical izakaya vibe, but honestly the food and service more than make up for it. Our server, Shawn (sp?), was absolutely top-notch--constantly moving, checking on tables, and keeping everything running seamlessly. Reservations were super easy to book on Yelp, and parking in the area was plentiful. It's BYOB, so don't be like us and forget your drinks--we only realized after we sat down! Everything we ordered was delicious, especially the kamameshi. We went for the full size, and when the pot arrived it looked massive... but we still demolished the whole thing. Pretty sure it was the buri fish that made it so addictive. The flavors--ginger, fish, and that comforting rice--were perfectly balanced. The spicy Hokkaido crab salad was light and refreshing, and the spicy sauce tied everything together beautifully. The buttered scallops were creamy with a subtle lemony tang, and the Hokkaido crab tempura with matcha salt was such a fun combo. Dessert was the perfect finishing touch: vanilla ice cream and yogurt topped with bright, tart lilikoi. Simple, clean, and so good. Really enjoyed our food at Izakaya Mitch's. Located near the airport, this spot is full of amazing dishes. It's definitely on the pricier side, and the portion size is close to Japanese Izakaya dishes, so you'd want to order a lot of items on the menu... also because the kitchen can be a tad slow, so you might want to order more than trying to follow up with orders. Didn't get to take pictures of everything, which means I genuinely wanted to eat everything quickly. From all the things I've tried, I definitely would recommend to not miss out on the fish rice. Now some constructive suggestions: - The lighting of the place is too bright for an Izakaya place. When I walked in during a weekday evening, it wasn't busy and combined with the bright light... I thought I went to the wrong place. - Clear signs for parking. We parked near the lot next to the restaurant, but till this day I have no idea if those spots are for customers. - If possible, I'd love to see more items like yakitori on the menu. While there were a lot of amazing, seafood forward items, I wish it had more traditional items you'd find in a lot of Izakaya place. There is a new izakaya right around the corner from the old Mitch. It is BYOB (which can be a big plus) and they serve up beautiful looking dishes. The service is really good, but the night we went they closed at 8pm which seems early for an izakaya. But they stayed open while we ordered a bunch of dishes. All of the dishes looked incredible, but some were lacking in flavor. The stand out dish was the kamameshi rice. WOW, that one had a lot of flavor. Overall pretty dishes that could use more seasoning. But maybe part of it is that right now it's BYOB so they don't need to salt like other places. Overall good. read more

This is the soft opening for Mitch's Izakaya, a sister restaurant of Mitch's Sashimi next door. So it's BYOB. I called when they were closed on Monday for a reservation on Wednesday. David called me back to confirm. We were greeted by David who is the General Manager. Chef Eita Miyazawa is from Kyushu and was extremely personable and came out of the kitchen to talk to us several times. The food was unique and very delicious. I especially enjoyed the grilled Hoke, sizzling A5 Wagyu from Iwate and the salmon and Ikura Kamameshi. I highly recommend this new Izakaya. I will definitely be back soon. read more

Wandered into the muggy air off a 20 hr flight and felt so parched and desperate that the IHOP outside the terminal was a contender. What if...in a utopian world, what if at the end of this dark street past Dunkin Donuts there was a little unassuming hidden gem that served the best sushi ever? I kept walking, haggard and with two kids in tow and things didn't look good. Lots were empty, buildings were industrial, weeds with burrs grew along the sidewalk and hundreds of these spiky seeds were stuck to my daughter's sweatpants. We see a little neon open sign. We go inside. Menu is just right, not too big, not too small. Apps were simple but just right too. Tofu salad love ya babe, go tofu, tell 'em how good you pair with watercress and fried onion topping. Edamame, that's like so easy to do, right? But people steam it too long because they don't care I guess. Well they do care here. Cucumber with unagi salad was so special. Crab was delicious. And now the real reason I'm not sure any of this actually happened and I was just dreaming: holycalamaphook, the sashimi! I am changing our return flights so I can experience it again. Only rec which we mentioned to our server was that they should have yaki onigiri to round out the offerings. We ate here for my mother's 85th birthday, the food was unbelievable and the service was great. It was our first time and we tried a lot of things on the menu, we tried the nitsuke fish of the day, the buttered hotate with asparagus, the unagi kabayaki, the Hokkaido crab tempura with matcha salt, the kamameshi with salmon and ikura, the miso minced meat with bell peppers and the A5 wagyu teppan. Tonight we finally made it to Izakaya Mitch's!!! We reserved at 5pm and the parking was plenty we arrived at 4:45pm. All of staff there were very friendly and excellent service since the server named "Shun" was bilingual Japanese-English, He treated all of us very well with his bilingual skill. We ordered a lot between 3 of us and it was all very delicious and authentic as well. I would like to try "Nabe" since they would give us a "Shabu shabu Style Thin Cut Fish" instead of usually the thin cut meats! The dessert was also super delish with some vanilla icecream with Lilikoi sauce*Lilikoi from Big Island* it was not sweet but very refreshing! I would definitely coming back to them before everybody knows this is the great "Izakaya-Tabe-Dokoro" I don't drink but my 2 other friends loved "BYOB" and ended up brought "shochu" from Nagasaki. They both enjoyed all of foods and their drinks for sure!! The Ambiance is neutral I think, a lot of booth tables which I love and also some tables for a couples. Wonderful first experience at Izakaya Mitch's! As we are frequent customers to Mitch's Sushi, we were excited to try this new Izakaya next door. Wow....what a great experience. There is ample parking, so that is not an issue. It's a modest looking establishment with comfortable seating. We were blown away by the superb customer service provided to us by Shun. He was very knowledgeable and enthusiastically provided insights to help us with our menu choices. We must admit, the sizzling A5 wagyu was the bomb! Juicy, buttery, and tender. The Hokkaido king crab tempura was also outstanding. We also thoroughly enjoyed the salmon and ikura kamameshi (generous half order portion!), perfectly prepared and a great addition to our meal. As this place is fairly new, it s still BYOB (a real bonus!). We will definitely be returning to try the additional dishes on the extensive menu. Can't wait to return. read more
