"Jenny I've got your number...I need to make you mine...eight, six, seven, five, three oh nine..." although this song and lyrics have nothing to do with 855 Aloha, that was the only thing upon my entry into this mysterious yet somehow still welcoming restaurant that kept playing over and over in my head. 855 Aloha is hip and trendy restaurant in the Waikīkī area of Honolulu that serves both the local community and tourists alike thanks to their buzzworthy mashup of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and European influenced cuisine that represents the Hawaiian islands rich cultural melting pot. Located on the ground floor of the Romer House hotel, which itself had been recently gutted and remodeled in recent years, along Nāhua Street, 855 Aloha proudly establishes itself as a restaurant that has its roots engrained with a sense of nostalgia from a time when things moved a little slower, even in Hawai'i where things have always moved a little slower, so diners can gather, stay a little longer, which upon my visit I happily did so. Named for Hawaii's once-ubiquitous payphone number, 855 Aloha is a celebration of local history and a bit of an homage to the humble payphone, where a handful of change could connect people back to the mainland. What brought me here was the fact that on a previous journey to the Hawaiian islands, I stayed at the Romer House and thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the hotel, but never got around to visiting their main restaurant on the ground floor lobby. Upon a recent visit to Waikīkī, with the rain coming down in droves, I made it my mission to finally make it one of Waikīkī's most intriguing restaurants. Not having reservations for 855 Aloha was not a problem, as I made sure to call in advance and they said they were taking walk-ins this evening. Being sat in one of their large booths made me appreciate solo dining, and take in the ambiance of a dimly lit dining room. Beyond the cocktail and beverage section of the menu, the dinner menu at 855 Aloha is separated into categories including Sushi Rolls, otherwise known as Roll Call; Salads, otherwise known as Fresh Talk; Shareable Pupus and Appetizers, otherwise known as Party Line; Large Plates, otherwise known as Main Line; Sides, otherwise known as What's Your Extension; and Desserts, otherwise known as Sweet Talk. To start my meal I ordered their Hello Goodbye cocktail which featured Tequila Blanco, Mezcal, Housemade Ginger Syrup, Honey and Lemon. A sultry cocktail that was deep in texture and flavor, this was a nice start to my meal. To eat with my cocktail, I ordered their Cali Roll which was filled with Snow Crab, Avocado, Cucumber and Sesame. This was your traditional sushi roll elevated in an only-in-Hawaii sense of mind. Since I was famished for food, I knew I wanted something hearty, and their Chinatown Chili Crisp Chicken which was served with Gai Lan vegetables, as well as Charred Lemon, and topped with Cilantro. To pair with my entrée, I ordered their Furikake Rice. As I sipped on my cocktail I enjoyed my Cali Roll piece by piece and knew that the food at 855 Aloha was truly elevated and I knew for the rest of my evening I was in for a real treat. My chicken entrée and bowl of steamed rice topped with furikake seaweed and sesame seeds would come out next and I would not be disappointed as it was juicy and flavorful with every bite. The chicken entrée was not the largest dish so sharing this one entrée seems doubtful the side of steamed rice definitely fills up any diner. I didn't think I had any room for dessert but changed my mind when I reviewed their menu, and their Chocolate Haupia Pie topped with Toasted Coconut and Whipped Cream was simply too good to ignore. My total bill for this visit to 855 Aloha was $90.06 that included tax and was before grtuity was added in, which was higher than most, but well worth the price tag. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to 855 Aloha, as it represented the true diverse cultures of Hawaii, thanks to the energy and kindness of the Japanese hospitality that this restaurant represents. Seeing my fellow diners, both large parties and couples enjoy themselves, in such a place where people were clearly bonding over their meal and drinks in such a laid back yet still dynamic social environment was a real treat. The front desk recommended 855 Aloha while at check in. He gave me a dining card where if I dined at certain restaurants, I would receive 15% off. As it was my first night in Hawaii and we didn't have dinner yet, sure why not try it? While waiting to be seated, I had asked the staff at 855 Aloha if the 15% discount would apply for guests at the hotel, and quite oddly, she said she didn't know. Upon being seated, I asked our server and strangely, she also didn't know and said she would ask someone. Sort of made me confused and gaslighted that I'm being told two different things. As it's our first time dining at 855 Ahola, we tried a few entrees and I would say that it's flavorful and delicious; much better than I would have expected. $12 for sparkling water, a little pricier but the food was good. I did enjoy my late meal / dinner. My only complaint would be that when the bill arrived, no discount was applied. I had told three servers that I was a guest at the hotel, had my key card and ID as well. The server came back and she applied 10% off. At that point, I just paid for the bill and left a 20% tip for gratuity. Being in Hawaii, especially after a long flight and it being our first meal which happens to be very late and it's dinner, would have liked for the hotel to have just honored the 15% discount without having to ask about it so many times. 15% discount won't break my wallet but it's more about the principle and fairness -- it is actually listed on the website as well. For our last meal in Hawaii, we chose 855 Aloha. I made a late dinner reservation for two and were seated right away. This cozy and beautiful restaurant is located inside the Romer House. They offer valet parking. We ordered the following: Pescador (sushi) $24 Miso caesar $14 Surf'n Turf $38 + shrimp $9 Pineapple upside down mochi cake $14 My son and I shared most of the items. And here's the rundown: Cocktails; they have a creative cocktail menu titled Mixed Signals with phone themed drinks. We tried the smooth operator, which was gin-based, perfectly balanced, and absolutely delicious with lemon and honey. loved the candy ginger garnish. We tried the banana phone which was too sweet for my liking. I did like the table side smoking gizmo which added a hint of Mesquite flavor - but still too sweet for me. My favorite was one called Uncle China, which was a tequila and Mezcal old-fashioned. My absolute favorite dish at this restaurant was the kimchi fried rice. I ate it for breakfast as well as dinner. I just couldn't get enough of it. My husband ordered the breaded pork chops one night and they were really bland and came out with what looked like the hot mustard and red sauce from panda express. The Kalbi beef that I ordered was overcooked and had a slightly bitter flavor as a result. The yakisoba noodles, miso salmon, and ribeye that we ordered on another night were absolutely delicious. Perfectly seasoned and really well cooked. The weird thing with this ribeye, is it came as a complete meal, but our waitress told us that it was just the meat so I ended up ordering sweet potatoes and charred broccolini to go with it -- the potatoes were cold, and meant to be eaten that way. It was a weird juxtaposition to eat with a hot steak. The charred broccolini was well cooked with amount of crunch. The Kimono Roll was amazing! The tempura shrimp added an incredible crunch. The seafood was super fresh and overall every single bite was a harmonious morsel of textures and flavors. The Loco Moco which I ate for breakfast was OK. Not something I need to eat again. The POG mimosa did not have any POG flavor. This restaurant is in the hotel lobby and is open to passers by as they make their way to their rooms. Went with a few friends to try this spot after seeing some posts online. It is a trendy and low key spot in Waikiki. While parking can be daunting, they offer free 3 hour valet parking which makes it easy if you still want to try it out! I made a reservation online and we arrived and were seated. It was pretty empty when we got there - maybe because it's a bit hidden off the main strip of Waikiki. While we had to wait a little to get seated, once seated our waitress was very helpful. Cocktail menu is cute with craft drinks and cute/unique names. They had recently changed up the menu when we got there, so I believe most things were pretty new. I would say their menu is a mix of local style/american. For food, we got the kalbi, fried rice, Caesar salad, chili chicken and poke hand rolls. Kalbi was pretty tender and nicely marinated. And the standout was the chili chicken for me! Super juicy and tender with good flavor. I was pleasantly surprised at the food and would want to come back! Our waitress was the sweetest person and made our experience so pleasant here. My boyfriend and I were celebrating our one year anniversary here for dinner and were treated well with a glass of prosecco, which really made the night. For drinks I ordered the hotline bling which was like a midori inspired drink, it was good. It was served with sliced asian pear which added sweetness to the dish. The panna cotta was different. It's thicker and grainy than the typical panna cotta, but I still enjoyed it. I found 855 Aloha online and decided to give it a shot since it's right in the heart of Waikīkī. The vibe looked amazing and the reviews were solid but wow, this place exceeded every expectation. I lived on Oʻahu and have eaten at just about every restaurant more than once, and hands down this might be my new favorite. Everything, and I mean everything, was incredible. The ambience, the service, and the food were all flawless. A special shoutout to China, our server, who was absolutely incredible and made the experience even better. I wanted a light dinner before bed and Izakaya 855's small portions were ideal for a light yet satisfying meal. The ambiance is romantic, yet casual which makes it perfect for birthday/celebratory dinners. My guest and I ordered 3 dishes to share - the mahi katsu, miso-marinated butterfish, and the miso Caesar salad. Surprisingly, the Caesar salad ended up being our favorite! Out of the two fish dishes, I would get the butterfish because of its fresh tangy marinade. The mahi katsu was alright, but I could have gotten twice the portion at a food truck on the same street. Our server was polite and informative when explaining the menu. The dishes are meant to be shared among the table, with each diner ordering 2-3 dishes depending on how hungry they are. The only issue I had with service was it took about 20 minutes for our first dish to be served, and about 15 minutes in between each dish. We got a little bit of appetizer and main dishes, but our favorite was the miso salmon and auntie's gau gee. The salmon was soft and not dry at all. I don't usually have high hopes for restaurants in hotels- but 855 changes that. As apart of the Mina group - sourcing, preparing & plating are all too notch. Ryan not only was a great and attentive bartender; but also kind, friendly and genuinely proud of the plates served. Miso Caesar- shockingly mind blowing. Super cute spot that's got the vibe and the cuisine to match it's very trendy and insta-worthy gramable photos! When you first step in, it is a bit slower on the weekdays. I went in to treat myself about a month ago and i was just mesmerised by the view again, as this had been my second time. I definitely enjoyed their play on words in their menu. What a pleasant surprise this restaurant was... tucked away in a quiet hotel on a small street off the main avenues of Waikiki... it had such a moody vibe immediately when we walked in, not in a pretentious way but modestly elegant and cool. Thank you Nadine C for the suggestion as it's a complete surprise to have a cool izakaya right in the heart of Waikiki, located on the ground level in Romer House which is a 21 and over hotel that I've heard but have forgotten about, as I was carded to enter from a gentleman who I thought was the valet which by the way they do and is free for up to three hours for dining here which I didn't know but was lucky to have found parking just down the street. I told him that we had reservations here but was early and was really nice about it and let us in with a suggested to we check out the pool area upstairs which we did was nice as there was a lot of lounge chairs is a great option as well besides the lobby bar our lounge area. Once seated we were greeted by our server who was just a delight knew her menu items like a pro and got our oshibori which is a nice and refreshing way to start our dinner we tried to decide what to order as there was quite a bit of items to choose from, one we had to as it was Bun-Bun Hiyashi Chuka which I do love the light soma vinaigrette topped with lots of veggies ...yum! Which then came the Chirashi Don where if you can find it is on a bed of sushi rice and is topped with the load of fresh fish, tamago which was like an endless variety choice was excellent. Then comes the "Mushi Mushi" which is a steamed Monchong on a huge piece of Wakame seaweed for of course the umami topped with mushrooms, carrots and a thick ankake sauce was a stunning prevention and so delicate. Then my favorite "Sendai Curry Yakisoba" which is one of the Chef's recommendations as it's a personal recipe with the traditional yakisoba that' tossed in curry sauce topped with aonori omg the flavor was outstanding. Aaaand we just had to add one more the "Miso Gama-ae" which is a sesame dressing that's more like a paste coating the sugar snap peas and what a lovely fresh crunch that was nice to break the varieties we had...loved it. We did had to try the dessert "Kinako Panna Cotta" love kinako and had to give it a try though it was not at all what we thought as it also had Japanese Pear Butter and Puffed Black Rice. Not smooth like the usual Panna cotta very grainy and bland...I was so disappointed. On the back of the menu and the staff all do explain the concept of the decor and menu names for many that aren't familiar with the local payphone and Japanese terminology both go hand in hand and is fun for those that do understand but know that they do have wonderful menu choices and was just surprised of the fun decor and friendly staff but great company for a fun and unique experience. First off, don't make the mistake of showing up at Romer Waikiki at the Ambassador, because this Izakaya is located inside of Romer House Waikiki! When going inside, know that the bar is to the left, the restaurant all the way to the right past the front desk area. We also made the mistake of going to the front desk first, to which the clerk advised that happy hour wasn't until after 9pm...but online it showed between 4pm-5pm which is why we were there. The hostess at the restaurant then came over to us to say that the restaurant was closed but that we could go to the bar, for open seating, which we did. There were 2 bartenders in front and a few other people behind the curtains to the left. We assumed it was their break room back there because they were laughing and swearing up a storm. Beautiful furniture and the way it was set up but, not so pleasant of an experience due to the cackling behind the curtains. As for the food, it was alright, nothing made me crave more. The chicken karaage, maybe 5 pieces at the most. Mainly breading, hardly any meat. The flavor wasn't anything to rave over. The mapo fries were super spicy for my palate. The smash burger was probably the best thing we ate, but the coleslaw didn't enhance the burger in any way, could've done without it. Overall, not my personal cup of tea. But the bartender was definitely easy on the eyes and accommodating in spending time explaining to us about their Clean Co. Came here to have a break from just poke. (Poke is amazing in Hawaii!) Part of the hotel lobby complex, this izakaya show cases sheek and modern cocktails and Hawaiian Japanese fusion izakaya fare. We had amazing moist and well seasoned karaage. I loved the charcoal smoke of the gyutan yaki. The cut is just right were it's not too thick and not too thin. Their yaki soba and okonomitaki served tapa style so allows you to try other things. Hands down love their aloha spoon shot filled with uni, salmon roe, and quail egg. When you're headed to this restaurant you will feel like you are searching for the public phone that this restaurant pays homage to. The only thing that would make this place any cooler, would be if the pay phone in the lobby worked...and got me take out from the kitchen. After an amazing Yelp event I decided to bring my husband for his birthday dinner. Our reservation was for 7pm. The staff is very welcoming and hospitable. Valet parking makes it so easy in Waikiki, 3 hours validated parking. I wanted to return primarily because of the wagyu sando and the Nama dessert. We ordered a number of other things . They were good. I probably would not order the kakiage again as it was too big and a bit filling. My favorites were the Wagyu, scallops and dessert. Our server was really cute and friendly. Ocean Umami 4/5 very fresh Ahi Tuna Tataki 5/5 sauce and toppings paired so well together Broccolini 5/5 the sauce was so good! Skirt Steak 4/5 Beef Tongue 3/5 this was thicker and tougher than what I'm used to Miso Marinated Butterfish 5/5 my fav from the night! so savory and fish was cooked perfectly The service was great and the workers really took care of us. Love the decor. Baby loved the lamp when she found out there was a button to change the settings. It's in the lobby so you can watch people walk by. Little cold...but I"m always cold. Waitress really sweet. Super helpful even with our messy baby. She had a LOT of suggestions...we took some. Ordered a bunch of stuff in no particular order... - Miso caesar salad - good refreshing salad, but could barely taste any miso. Just a regular salad. - Edamame naked - no spicy for the baby. This was grilled? Different...I liked it though. - Karaage Chicken - not bad. Came with sauce which it needed..or just a squeeze of lemon. Baby liked it! - Miso Soup - for baby...she ate the tofu but didn't want the soup. - Ocean Umami - good...but not sure how to eat it. Seemed like it should have been on a spoon maybe? Picked up ikura piece by piece with hashi. Time consuming, so used the spoon from the soba. - Umami Shiitake - really good. Hubs thought needed salt, but I liked it. Buggah holds the heat tho so watch out! - Mahi Katsu - I'm on a mentaiko kick so really liked that. Mahi was super thin though. - Yakisoba - tasty but way too overcooked. Super soft. Perfect for baby. - Skirt Steak - YUM. This was delish. Did NOT order the "Butterfish" since it's that Walu Butterfish-wannabe that makes people poop oil. Beware. At least they tell you it's Walu...so you have been warned. The Geisha and Godzilla sushi rolls sounded a little overwhelming. A little too much going on. The other rolls were typical, but maybe we missed out. Thought we would need more, but actually with drinks, we even had leftovers. Overall pretty good. When I first learned of Izakaya 855-Aloha, I looked at the few pictures of the food on Yelp, but I wasn't impressed. However, when I ate there and tried different dishes, I was very impressed! They serve both tradition Japanese izakaya dishes, as well as creative fusion dishes. I loved their Fuji Sando (Miyazaki A5 wagyu) sandwich, and their Kara Ebi (shrimp tempura). I enjoyed two of their specialty cocktails. The Serial Cabernet Sauvignon was very smooth and the sake that I had was also good. The hotel looks recently renovated, and they have both a nice bar area as well as a comfortable dining area. If you're looking for new restaurants to try, I would highly recommend trying Izakaya 855-Aloha for your next dining experience. You won't be disappointed! I'm going back the next chance I get. Food came out pretty well, came on valentines week so they had a cute special menu. Very small portions for a big price point but the quality is good. It's a hotel meal so you expect to pay a lot. Drinks were very strong too! The customer service, I did have an interaction that rubbed in the wrong way. I would like to justify maybe there was a language barrier but it definitely killed the mood of the rest of our night. As we ordered, I made sure to point at the menu items I wanted. I pointed at the temakis as I said the items each. The server asked "roll? And I said hand roll yes - and pointed to the menu item" the food came out we got a bunch of sushi rolls. I told the female server the mistake and she just asked "so you don't want these" I said "no because that's not what he ordered" she proceeded to walk off to the server and he went over to me and said "i asked you rolls you said yes" and I tried to explain I said hand rolls and pointed at the items on their valentine menu to make sure he wasn't confused. He said "okay so you changed" and that had me so appalled I very calmly had to explain again and he scurried off. He didn't check on us the rest of the night. We had another female server check in and she was really nice to us. We tried to even wave down the male server but didn't get much luck until it came with the check. That's when he apologized when I was just about to tip. Again, I would like to emphasize the language barrier, but that was such an ill feeling. Unfortunately this was not an ideal hotel dining experience but overall food and drinks I would say it was quality over quantity. Located on the ground level of Romer House Waikiki (an adults only hotel), this izakaya offers complimentary 3 hours of validated parking! Shucks - I didn't know. I parked for free on Ala Wai Boulevard... 4 blocks away! Alyssa was our cheerful, competent server. She was patient, had great timing, and had a fun sense of humor! We ordered: 1. Bun-Bun Hiyashi Chuka - the vinegarette dressing threw me off 2. Chirashi Don - above average because of the fresh scallops 3. Sendai Curry Yakisoba - tasty! 4. We found Izakaya 855 during our Waikiki staycation and it was honestly one of the best surprises of the trip! This cozy, hole-in-the-wall spot has the perfect atmosphere for a casual night out -- relaxed, welcoming, and full of good energy. We ordered the eggplant dish (so flavorful and cooked to perfection!) and the Geisha Roll, which was fresh, delicious, and beautifully put together. Their cocktails were just as impressive -- we especially loved the 855 Water -- super refreshing and dangerously easy to sip. Everything we tried had that perfect balance of flavors that makes you want to keep ordering "just one more dish." Izakaya 855 Aloha is inside Hawaii's first adults-only hotel, Romer House Waikiki, on Nahua Street near International Marketplace. This location has been many things since I've lived here and this is by far the nicest and most modern concept. The hotel has been completely remodeled, which includes this restaurant and bar that takes up most of the lobby. If you're coming in, make sure to check out the pool bar portion, which has its own drink and food menu with tables around the pool deck upstairs. I visited on a weekend evening, the bar area leans into evening and late night not during the day right now. The decor is modern but with nostalgic 60s artwork by local artist Solario featuring phone booths and old style faux advertisements to lean into the phone number name of the restaurant "855 Aloha". It's cozy here, with tables for 2 or 4, plus bar seating, casual chairs, and outdoor seating (this would be in direct sun in the early evening, but probably pleasant once the sun sets). I had stopped in a little too early and talked to the bartender to see the glassware, which were also designed by Solario and really well done. They have a full bar of liquor, draft beer (a small but thoughtful selection of local and macro favorites), plus various sake. The menu is perfect for any occasion, with small pupu to larger dishes, sharing size or for one. I look forward to coming back and trying the food soon. On my visit I came for a drink and ended up having a great time thanks to the bartenders. I tried a 'sake bomb' for the first time; a shot of sake on top of chopsticks dropped in Sapporo Lager. It was a fun combination and I appreciated trying one. The staff are still learning about the new place and menu, but were already professional and super friendly. I look forward to coming back. There was a private event on the pool deck, so it also seems this would be a great location for parties and group events. 18/21 and up of course! read more

This spot is a hidden gem in the hustle of Waikīkī. We made a same day reservation, sat immediately and had our first order within 5 minutes. Really clean, hip atmosphere set inside a newly renovated Romer hotel. Everything we ate was top notch. -Chicken Karaage- 5/5 -Grilled Eggplant- 4/5 great flavor, eggplant texture... awesome if you like eggplant. -Sushi- 5/5 fresh and delicious, unique combos -"Okonamiyaki" style seafood pancake- 4/5 could do with more cabbage and less shrimp. Drinks were on point! Andrew was an amazing bartender, seriously a badass at his craft. My partner and I came here to celebrate our anniversary, and the ambiance was incredibly romantic. Although we missed the food window (our bad!), the cocktails more than made up for it. Each drink was a work of art, with complex flavors and creative ingredients. The names were just as fun! Very tasty dining in an ultra modern ambience with friendly informative service. Exceptionally fresh seafood, elegant plating, and subtle seasoning. Highlights included the prime beef skirt steak, oko-oko pancake, Mahi katsu, Kara-age Karashi mustard fried chicken, and the miso marinated butterfish was outstanding. The garlic ginger grilled shrimp was a little too spicy and the sashimi was very fresh but quite a small serving. For a large seating of nine, not all dishes were served at the same time, but everything came out quite quickly compared to other restaurants. With many strong reviews, this restaurant did not disappoint. Overall one of the tastiest Japanese restaurants I have sampled. My friends and I were more on the bar area side of this place and it was such a vibe! A super cute pay phoned theme spot with a unique food and drink menu. We got a variety of drinks that included midori sours, lychee martinis, Akashi ume highball and espresso martini. The drinks were super cute and we all enjoyed them. For food we shared the mapo fries and our friends also got the chicken kara-age, smash burgers and yakisoba. The fries were soo good! Nice and crispy and even had a little kick to them. Our friends really liked the smash burgers and yakisoba. The perfect food to sober us up and drink more drinks haha. Service was good and I believe they validate parking for up to 3 hours! 855 is a fun and cute place to go out for drinks and great food! I really enjoyed coming here for my birthday. The rest of the group liked the food but thought the portion sizes were too small for what you pay. I would agree with that but I still really liked the eggplant. It's a must try. It's not an easy place to find when you are walking or driving on the street since it's located in the hotel. The outside of the hotel/restaurant is not clearly marked. It's a very elegant modern design. read more
