I have to admit, it was the pizza that saved the day. The rest of the dishes we ordered were subpar, including their supposedly famous rib-eye steak. We checked in early and were told to come back later since we had arrived ahead of our reservation time. Fair enough. But when we returned, we had to wait another 15+ minutes before being seated. Then came another long wait for our waitress to come around and take our orders. To make matters worse, our table had an obstructed view of the hula show, despite my specifically requesting a good table so I could entertain my loved ones visiting from the mainland. I guess this is what happens when a 20% service charge is automatically locked in for a party of six. I have no problem tipping appropriately for good service, but I certainly don't believe poor service deserves the same treatment. This experience left a really bad taste in my mouth. This was my second visit here, and they did not disappoint. It's been hot lately, so I was a bit worried since the restaurant is mostly outdoors, but today was our lucky day -- it was nice and breezy. We started with cocktails, and I had the Yellow Umbrella, which tasted like a Margarita with lilikoi. It was amazingly good. They also brought out complementary Taro Rolls with passion fruit, pineapple, and papaya butter. One of the rolls had a small poke from a bird, but the rest were great. The soup of the day was Seafood Gumbo. It wasn't exactly what we expected, but it was still delicious and we enjoyed it. This was a could-have-missed experience for us. It seems you need to queue up way before 5:30 to get a good table for the nightly entertainment (reservations aren't accepted). The restaurant and bar weren't terribly unique. The cocktails are quite pricy for being as mid as they are...we tried to the coconut cake martini and the coconut old fashioned. The old fashioned was fine. Tasted like coconut. The martini did not have all the razzmatazz shown in the menu picture, and tasted like key lime pie, which is fine, but there was nary a hint of coconut. I wouldn't recommend this place, unless you plan your visit better and/or aren't as persnickety about quality menu offerings as we are. What a wonderful way to end a business leisure trip. House Without a Key is one of the only privately owned properties on Waikiki beach. Do access their website, as there is a great backstory regarding how this beautiful property came to be. Spoiler alert: make reservations, request a table with an umbrella by the surf, order one of their famous Mai Tai cocktails, and enjoy their elevated cuisine, service, and entertainment. We arrived and were greeted by staff and directed to the dining area. Our request for a table by the beach was honored, and we were just far enough away from the (wonderful) entertainment that we could thoroughly enjoy it and carry on a conversation. I noticed that their Caesar salad had anchovies draped across the lettuce! Our wonderful professional server, Melissa, gave us a heads-up that the Apps were huge and easily shared. Our split salad arrived, and yes, sharing is the way to go. For our entrees, I ordered the swordfish, and Plus 1 ordered the sticky ribs appetizer for dinner. Swordfish is a tricky one to grill; one extra minute, and the fish turns to chewing gum. My dinner was cooked perfectly, firm and moist. We could have easily shared the sticky rib App. These ribs were tender as all heck and spiced to perfection. Since we were celebrating a special event, we were gifted with their famous Halekulani's Signature Coconut Cake. Wow, Light as a feather and oh so decadent! An adjoining table ordered a pizza, yes, a pizza for dinner. I must say the pizza looked awesome. This was a thin-crust gourmet pizza with some interesting meat and cheese toppings. I am a pizza snob times 10, and I would return just to order that pizza. Pro tip: You will be dining outside, so those pesky birds will be keeping a close eye on any food that you drop. My family came here on a Saturday evening to watch our friend dance hula. The atmosphere was light, warm, and filled with the Aloha spirit. Then the other short rib, which was pretty soft as well. Next was the Local Fresh Catch. Honestly this one was very underwhelming because this one basically just tasted like the steamed fish you can get at a Chinese Seafood Restaurant for a larger portion and more worth the price. Especially the ingredients that used to prepare this, it tasted very very similar. The Coconut Curry Chicken Breast was the most unique one of the entrees we ordered. It had a smoky aroma and I enjoyed it with the little garnishes that offered on the side for it! Overall, it does seem like the entree dishes revolve around Asian cuisine, except Americanized. Some are tasty, some don't taste worth it, but the presentation and the vibes of the restaurant are quite nice. Our waiter was also extremely kind and kept updating us when the food would come out. He did make a mistake on our coconut curry and ordered it as tofu curry, so they mistakenly made our dish twice with different things, and ended up getting the coconut curry right. Dinner here was very nice. it's not a fancy place but more like a high end pool side restaurant. They have local Hawaiian music with a hula dancer. The wait staff is very good. They are very attentive in all aspects where service is involve. My favorite thing I tried was the Hamachi Crudo as one of my starters. The Ahi was good as well. The Halekulani Coconut Cake is our favorite dessert, anywhere in the world. Prices are a bit high even for Hawaii, but we think that they are worth a nice lunch on the amazing waterfront. The name of the restaurant comes from one of the Charlie Chan mystery books written by Earl Derr Biggers in the late-1920's. The legend is that Biggers, a Honolulu police detective, wrote his Chan books in the back yard of a friend that lived in a house where the hotel is now located. However they did have nice music playing but it only lasted until about 8pm. We ordered two drinks, ribeye and a pizza and the bill was about $200 including tip. While the ribeye was tasty, I feel that the experience fell short. For $200, not even an acknowledgment for our celebration just seemed very odd for such a high end place. The coconut cake and the service save this from being a three star review.... I was stationed here from 1981 to 1984, so I remember the transformation from the original property, to what it is now. It is an absolutely beautiful property. I came in to have a drink, and my sister told me that I *HAD* to try a slice of the coconut cake. I sat in the outside seating area next to the pool, and the view just OK. I could see diamond head off to the side, but because of a fence and bushes, I couldn't really see the beach or the ocean. That was kind of a letdown. They had a decent sized menu, the prices are definitely on the higher end, but I get it. This is a premium property. My waiter came, and he was very nice I ordered a virgin mai tai, and a slice of the legendary coconut cake. The cake was amazing! I had heard stories, but this blew everything out of the water. Moist, tender, a wonderful coconut flavor. One of the best slices of cake I have had in an extremely long time..... Now, let's get to the drinks... the virgin Mai Tai was good, but the problem was, the glass was filled, almost totally with crushed ice. It was mostly crushed ice, and not that much drink. Plus, the ice started to water the drink down almost immediately. I looked at the menu, and I saw that they also have a mocktail called a creamsicle. I decided to give it another shot, no pun intended... He brings that, and again, the drink was very good, but there was once again the problem of the crushed ice. It definitely took away from the drink.... Two drinks, a slice of the coconut cake, and a tip, and I'm out the door $55 poorer. Again, I get it, it is a premium property but come on guys, at these prices, you can afford to use ice cubes, instead of crushed ice. At least they did validate my parking... This place was on my list for quite some time, and recently had a chance to experience it. Parking is FREE for 4hours with validation located across the street in a parking structure. The ambiance is outdoors and beautiful! Our server was so friendly and overall - wonderful. However - the food is where this all fell short. Honestly, the food seems like *overpriced* tourist hotel food. It was just OK. I ordered the short rib, and while it was tenderly cooked, the sauce was incredibly salty. My partner ordered the steak and it was just OK as well. Keiki ordered the Menehune. It was a good amount and great variety which they enjoyed, but also very expensive for what it was. Also - they were out of Govinda's juices. We were celebrating my out-of-town in-laws' wedding anniversary and there was no attempt at making the dinner special which seemed odd for such a "high end" establishment. They chose this place for the spacious floor which made it comfortable for their double stroller. Relaxed, casual, atmosphere with 5 star service. The local staff throughout the hotel from the time you step out of your car offer polite and friendly service that seems genuinely full of aloha. At this semi covered outdoor restaurant you can feel relaxed in your t-shirt and slippers while dining on a lobster. 3 of us got the lobster salad which was both filling and light. Mom got the Captain's catch , and cousins got the "All occasions" arugula prosciutto pizza that looked fresh with an attractive presentation. We had the poke trio appetizer, I am glad we got that one because there were items i liked, but i didn't are for the marlin. The regular poke, you had to pick one and i might have chosen wrong. The rolls that they served were really good, sweet and had ube in them so they were purple. They were served with a fruity butter. This was probably my single favorite think I ate there. I had the catch of the day and my husband had the mahi mahi. Unfortunately, they ran out of the sea bass and mine ended up being mahi mahi too. The fish was good, not great. The dessert we chose was a fruit tart which we really enjoyed. My drink was a gin drink and it was really tasty. My husband tried a couple of different drinks which were also good. Frunch... When friends gather for brunch it's definitely makes it a beautiful day and what a lovely place to enjoy it all at the House Without a Key a spot in the Halekulani where they only distraction from the views is the stunning tree decked out with lanterns itself as I understand that they also have some night time event as well and can just imagine as the sun goes down what a lovely sight it truly is. What better way to take in all this wonderful vibe then a table right at the end of the covered area that all I can see is the breathtaking unobstructed beach scenery something that I do take for granted but am so happy to enjoy on this beautiful Sunday morning along with an amazing brunch and can see why many recommend this location as I've never felt so taken care of and what a luxurious feeling. Although the view is nice, food is subpar. Expected crab cake to be breaded and fried which would have been better. It was a bit boring without the sauce. Roasted potatoes were under seasoned and kind of plain. Taro bread rolls were good but nothing crazy. Drinks were good. I made a reservation for my anniversary to come here and requested in the notes to be sat closer to the view but was seated at a table a bit in the middle back. Not sure how they arrange seating since there were some available closer to the edge but it wasn't a big deal. Besides my thoughts on food and seating, I love the live music and view. It was really nice during sunset and calming. Servers were nice and attentive. Overall, come here for some drinks and to enjoy the ambience, not recommended for the food. read more

Not great. First time here. Came with good expectations of a great experience. But...I got stopped going in and questioned then escorted to the restaurant. Sat quickly outside. The server looked mad and was not friendly. The drink tasted like a lemon cleaner. Ordered the coconut drink. Missing the coconut and almond rim. The sushi roll was fair. The pizza was missing the oregano and basil so fair at best. $90 for 1drink and 2 apps. The live music was good. The hula dancer was late late. She appeared to be intoxicated or distracted. Half of her lei crown flowers were turning brown. When I paid the server returned saying he charged my card for someone else's order $179! Said it was cancelled and would clear my card in 7 days. It's been a while since the last time that we came here. We went this past Saturday for their breakfast buffet. We thought the food was good, and the omelette station had no wait. They have a decent selection of food including some Japanese breakfast food. They do offer kamaaina discount. They didn't have the item I was looking for so maybe I did not order the dishes that people love and rate this place as high as it is. - Lawai'a Roll - The roll had a tempura casing that was an unpleasant texture. I couldn't get through eat more than 2 pieces. There was no flavor with or without the soy sauce. - Ahi Tataki - This was okay but you can find more spectacular sashimi at other restaurants. Feels like a typically highly rated joint in tourist area. High priced but average quality. I wouldn't recommend unless you need the convenience of walking from your hotel to a place for food. read more
