From start to finish, this was an exception experience. Ocean/beachfront seating on their lanai, with woven lanterns hanging through out. Tiki torches really helped set the vibe. You absolutely need reservations for a table on the Lanai for dinner. Prime times are for the sunset. We were seated immediately and our order for refreshments wasn't long behind. What we ordered: ** a bottle of Chianti wine ** the focaccia bread served with a balsamic whipped butter. ** Mido Caesar salad, , my husband and I split the salad. ** fennel sausage orecchiette ** kahuku golden tomato strozzapreti ** Complementary Guava cake for our Anniversary The focaccia bread was warm and soft. The balsamic whipped butter was delightful. The kahuku golden tomato strozzapreti pasta dish reminded me of the pasta dishes I ate well visiting in Italy. It is a light and flavorful dish, the sweet tomatoes were bursting with flavor. My husband ordered the fennel sausage and orecchiette pasta dish, this was also delicious. Our server was very friendly and prompt, adding her favorite items from the menu. They served us a light and fluffy complementary Guava cake for our anniversary. We loved the whole experience.

Booked a birthday dinner at Hau Tree for the sunset and beachside views! You can book 30 days in advance online which I recommend if you're looking for the specific sunset time to time it right. Very limited parking and we had to valet it which came out to only $10 with restaurant validation. Service was friendly but felt slow. Food was decent but I just wasn't impressed. I've never complained about large portions but why were there so many dang potatoes as the side it was so wasteful and didn't taste that great either. The sunset beach views were great but I wouldn't go out of my way to come back here. It didn't hit the spot for us. Drink: - liliko'i margarita (has tajin like rim) was limey Food: - chip & rainbow caviar - really good! - lomi hamachi - kale & spinach salad add seared ahi - very small ahi - 12 oz washugyu striploin with side: roasted potatoes (do not get this side and it was way too many see pic) side: roasted eggplant

Okay, this place is stunning. Plus it has such a great view along the beach! The food was pretty good - the focaccia and rainbow dip was to die for. Pasta felt plain unfortunately. Service was so good. We were so obvious we were tourist and just came by to celebrate a nice occasion and our waitress was so accommodating, even covering our pasta plates while we took a break to take some photos on the beach!

Beautiful place to have breakfast/brunch with your date, family, or friends! Very very relaxed ambiance with amazing views and great food! It is on the pricier side, but no other breakfast/brunch can beat this place with food and views! Service is spectacular as well, we wanted near ocean table with great view and host did not hesitate to accommodate, our server Kody was very patient and knowledgeable about the menu and restaurant. Everything really felt relaxed and food tastes great! Service 5/5 Food 5/5 Street parking or Validated ($10?) for valet Make Sure to call in to request for specific tables early

Came here with my husband for brunch. He tried the Hau tree eggs Benedict and I tried the Avocado eggs Benedict. The dishes came with a potatoes and salad. Very fresh! Both were good! We also tried the Ube Cinnamon roll. Yum! Not too sweet. The cinnamon roll was huge! Service was good. It started raining so our server quickly came over to move us to another table. They have an open concept where there's indoor and outdoor seating and a great beach view.

The service was pretty good I wish we could've sat in the lanai area but sadly we got placed inside. The food was good but overpriced and so were the drinks but the ambiance was nice we still got a good beach view.

celebrated a birthday lunch here during the week. Haven't been here since forever. First thing I noticed was that they cut back the hau and kept the section of the tree that is more toward the beach. But i like it-it's more airy and open. We parked in the Kaimana hotel lot-valet. It's $10 for 3 hours with validation but no need. Just tell the valet you're going to the Hau Tree. It was a lovely day and loved looking over at the beach. Too bad Rocky the seal wasn't there yet. Not pupping season just yet I guess. The service was fantastic-our server Jennifer was friendly and gracious and we were checked on often. the food-- I had the Shakshuka ($24) and asked for it no added salt. It was great! The spices were delicious. It came in a small cast iron dish with 4 pieces of perfectly toasted bread. So far this was the best shakshuka I've had. The egg was nice and runny and made the dish even creamier. Hubby had the calamansi pancakes ($23). Our server told us it was her favorite and I can see why. The pancakes were piled high and topped with citrus cream with calamansi syrup on the side. The pancakes were very fluffy and light and the citrus flavor really complimented the sweetness. If you like pancakes, this is it! And to end it all, Jennifer brought out a little guava cake sprinkled with coconut on a plate with Happy Birthday in chocolate on the house! What a great surprise! It was a peaceful and special meal! Definitely would come back with out of town family who are coming soon!

Tuesday 830pm I was looking to reserve a table for three guests two days before I wanted to have dinner, but the only options were 8:30pm and later. When we arrived there were plenty of tables available. I was a little concerned about the wind and the cold (60s) because we were seated outdoors but it was perfect, probably because we were enclosed by trees and walls. I'm glad we sat outside because in the dark (no sunset to watch over Kaimana beach) the setting was still beautiful. We ordered the crispy octopus, kale and spinach salad, eggplant, burrata and tomatoes, mango whoopsie, fudge, and banoffee tiramisu. The kale salad had quite a bit of gorgonzola on it, so I got to eat most of it. I liked the banoffee tiramisu and eggplant. I LOVED the burrata and tomatoes. Who knew olive tamponade went with tomatoes? I could have made a meal with just the eggplant and the burrata tomatoes. I have always remembered valeting my car, but this time we parked for free at the meters that were free after 6pm, just across the street. I remember I loved the tuna tartare and burrata toast last time. Always a lovely place to dine at!

I've been here a few times, but this visit officially sold me. I started with the lemon chamomile tea, which was really nice and warm, a cozy way to begin the meal. We ordered the half dozen oysters. Honestly, they were a bit pricey, but that's kind of expected in Hawaii. Our server mentioned they were Kusshi oysters from the Pacific Northwest. They were fine on their own, but I definitely recommend asking for Tabasco and mignonette to bring out more flavor. The focaccia was incredible. Truly one of my favorite parts of the meal. So soft and flavorful. I loved the oil and absolutely mopped up every bit of the spread. The kale and spinach salad was also a hit. The Greek goddess dressing tied everything together beautifully. For mains, we ordered family style. The pistou bucatini had interesting noodles. I've never seen them shaped like that before and they looked homemade. It was really good overall, and the chicken was incredibly tender. The king salmon was delicious, perfectly cooked, and the peas were such a delightful addition. But the true standout for our table was the roasted squash... oh my god. It literally melted in my mouth and ended up being my favorite dish. I loved the little pomegranate pops for texture and sweetness. The service was immaculate. Our food came out so quick. Jonah, our server, was amazing. He was very attentive, kind, and thoughtful throughout the meal. I would 100% recommend coming on a Friday around 7:30 PM so you can catch the fireworks, which makes the whole experience feel extra special with the ocean in the background. After this meal, Hau Tree is officially one of my top favorite Waikiki restaurants. Aside from the oysters, everything was truly perfect. We left very satisfied.

This review is for dinner. The sunset views and overall ambiance are absolutely stunning--easily a 5/5. I was able to request a table by the beach through OpenTable, which made the experience even better. As a bonus, if you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve card, they offer a $150 credit for this restaurant, which is a great perk. The food, however, was more of a 3/5. The focaccia bread was overly salty--and that's coming from someone who really enjoys salty food. The fish entrée was dry, lacked flavor, and definitely needed more sauce. Portion sizes were also on the smaller side for the price point. Overall, I still had a good experience thanks to the views and atmosphere. I'd likely come back for drinks and the scenery rather than a full dinner.

A gorgeous setting and decent food, but most importantly, easy & cheap street parking at 50 cents/hour! Hau Tree is one of the better Waikiki brunch places imo - even though it's pricey (as is all of Waikiki), the food is decent and the seating is so cute. The downstairs patio along the beach is the nicest spot, but because the whole area is an open air lanai, the inside seating is also beautiful. I had the calamansi ricotta pancakes, which was a huge serving and had calamansi curd between each pancake in the stack. I wouldn't come here just for that, but I would get it again. The service was also wonderful - we were almost an hour late to our reservation (oops) because we got lost and then had to hunt for parking, but they were extremely accommodating when we called and held a table for us long past the 15 minute grace period.

The food was average in a gorgeous beach side view. We had lamb chops, ahi salad and roasted squash. The best was the squash. Service was quick and waiter was attentive, checking on us every 20 mins.

I honestly don't understand why this restaurant is so highly reviewed. Yes, the view is a million dollar view but that's all this restaurant has going for itself. It's indoor/outdoor seating with the view of Waikīkī Beach and the Pacific Ocean. That's about all the positive I have to say about this restaurant. I'll list some issues that we feel should be worked on: - If the restaurant isn't full and customers have reservations, don't make them wait unnecessarily. This happened to us and it felt very inane that we could see empty tables yet they still made us wait when we had reservations. - Be consistent with serving bread to customers. We saw several tables receive bread but we didn't receive bread. It would have been great because it took forever for them to come and take our order and we were hungry. - Speed up the serving process. We didn't understand why it took so long to get the appetizer. It took even longer to get our pasta and lamb. Drinks took forever as well. The place wasn't busy so we really didn't understand why it took so long for everyone there. This was a common complaint as we talked among ourselves as we waited for our food. - If you make diners wait so long for food, make sure it's incredible. The food came out extremely underwhelming and tasted just mediocre. It was not worth the wait nor the price point. Very overpriced for the portion size and what you actually get. There are a lot of issues here but if you are a tourist that wants to have a SLOW meal with an ocean view, this is the place. For everyone who doesn't want to wait FOREVER to eat then you probably want to skip this restaurant. There are lots of restaurants with amazing views that you can dine at. 1.5 stars.

Ask the Community - Hau Tree

    Are there gluten-free options?

Sort of, there isn't "gluten-free" options on the menu but there's fish, and salads. I would also recommend letting your server know as well.

    Are there any vegan options?

What time do they start serving dinner pls?

The capacity of the private room?

    Is there a kama'aina discount?

    Is there valet parking?

Yes at the hotel. There is also ample parking in the street as it's at the end of town.

    Are walk-ins welcome?

For walk-in, the best bet that seems to always have some seating is the gorgeous/comfortable bar. For the lower patio, reservations encouraged.

    Is it baby/kid friendly atmosphere?

    Yes

Is it possible to make modifications to the menu for gluten allergy? Mahalo

    I don't think that's possible.

Hi just wondering if there's still happy hour available, if so where can I find the menu for that, and what are the hours?

Hi Jacy, I posted pics of the dinner and drinks menu back in April. There is a QR code on the menu. Maybe that will give info on possible happy hour specials?

How do you make reservations? I used to be able to online but it's not showing up on Resy anymore

Aloha!! We currently are using the Tock reservation system!

    Is there a kids menu?

As of April/ early May, they didn't.

How's the parking situation? Did anyone know the rates at Kapiolani Patk

They have valet parking, and it may have been $10.

Do you have a birthday dessert plate?

    Yes!!!

    Is this restaurant wheelchair accessible?

    Yes

    Is there a keiki menu?

    Unfortunately, I didn't notice a keiki menu.

Are small dogs allowed at the lanai?

Yes, they are now allowing dogs well behaved

I noticed a few tables had brought their own wine (good wines, likely for a special occasion) - what is the corkage fee?

No idea. I was told you can't do this.

Is the old Hau Tree Menu gone? This is my husband's go-to birthday or anniversary place for years and always ordered the same thing. Sad to not see that menu anymore.

Yes it's gone, but better. Chef Chris Kajioka (Miro) along with Chef Alan (Le Bistro) are serving up amazing dishes. He'll be pleasantly surprised! Enjoy

What is PDR seating when making dinner reservations?

    Private Dining Room.

Best place for authentic Hawaiian food for sure. Great service, even if they get tired of repeating…read morethemselves and could write it out, I really appreciate them explaining to newcomers every time what to eat and how to eat it to get that authentic experience. We went with what's recommended for first timers - laulau pork, you eat the leaves everything and it's filling and delicious - short ribs, some might say it's overcooked but I think it's just a different way of cooking and eating it, the pieces were thick and high quality, comes with 4 - Loki salmon, it's cured and this reminds me of ceviche or pico de gallo and salmon, it was flavorful, juicy and refreshing - comes with onions and salt to add to the complexity of the flavors - we ate it with poi, which they use as the starch to replace the rice. It's made of taro, I say give it a try for that unique and authentic experience - coconut jelly was yummy They accept cash and card Limited parking in the front, come in right before 5:30 on a weekday to beat the crowd Small family business vibes The experience lives up to the hype!

The menu is QR-based and easy to navigate. My friend and I ordered the laulau, fried ahi, and poi (unfortunately didn't get photos). When we asked for recommendations, our server was initially helpful and offered a few suggestions. However, when we decided to explore other options and asked for additional recommendations, her attitude noticeably shifted. She seemed annoyed, immediately cut the interaction short, and walked away without checking if we wanted to order anything else. That interaction left us both feeling uncomfortable and impacted our overall experience. As for the food: the laulau was decent--nothing particularly flavorful, but the meat was tender. The fried ahi was cooked well and tender, though a bit on the salty side. The poi was thinner than expected, slightly runny, and leaned more acidic with little to no sweetness. Overall, the food was okay, but the service fell short and made the experience less enjoyable.

The staff was super nice about it and was able to accommodate us, with only a small request that we be out by 8pm since there was another big party with a reservation coming in. Absolutely reasonable. They sat us right away at three large tables, which gave us plenty of space for food and didn't force us to sit super close together. Menus, waters, plates, napkins, and forks were all brought out immediately, and our waiter was quick to take our order. We started with the prix fixe menu for 8-10 guests and were going to add other items à la carte, but a handful of our group accidentally went to the other Side Street location (make sure your group is all on the same page), so what we ordered ended up being more than enough. We left stuffed and with 5 boxes of food still. Edamame was nice and steamy, and large enough to easily pop the beans out with your mouth. Wish there was a bit more salt though. The farmer's salad had everything going on from citrusy to salty to crispy. Avocado had a little bit of oxidation but the capers, dressing and potato curls provided plenty of reasons to overlook it. The fried rice came in a hefty portion, with sizable pieces of bacon and sausage. The chicken I didn't realize was boneless based on the shape of the deep fry, but it was nice to freely bite into it without worrying about hitting anything with my teeth. Probably a bit too much on fried bits but still good. Pork chops had a better meat to crisp ratio in my opinion, as well as juiciness. They even came with ketchup on the side, which I love as a pairing but don't see much of at restaurants. My favorite meat item was definitely the sizzling boneless kalbi. The presentation on the sizzling plate with a side of kimchi was spectacular, and the meat was full of flavor. We also ordered yakisoba, which wasn't part of the prix fixe. Tasted good but nothing past standard expectations. We let the waiter know we had a 30th birthday at the table, and they brought a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream with a candle, and did a decent job getting the whole room to participate in the singing. It could also be the type of crowd this place attracts, since it seemed that everyone was so friendly and approachable. Thanks to the quick and consistent service, we were out in a little over an hour with no complaints.

We pulled up and were greeted by the cashier who was friendly and answered lol of our questions. We decided on a combo of Kalua Pig and Laulau along with Poi. First off, turns out that I do not care for Poi! This restaurant cooks it well and it is absolutely not their fault but what a boring food! The Pork was outstanding and the Taro Leaves on the Laulau were outstanding. We also had the Ho'io Salad which was a great addition with outstanding flavor. We finished with the dessert Sweet Lady of Waiahole which was super tasty and not to be missed. There is decent parking and several picnic tables outside. I thought the entire experience was super fun, you just may want to swap your Poi for Rice. :)

Really glad we stopped by!

The guava bar was delicious and flavorful and just crumbles in your mouth! Definitely one of the better guava bars I've tried. Love how crumbly it is. The salmon belly was delicious OMFG. It looks so simple and straightforward but that sht is so flavorful. It is crispy and yet soft on the inside. The salmon belly is cut into bite-sized pieces so I didn't have to worry about using a knife to cut it. I usually try salmon belly where it is usually seasoned lightly to bring out the natural flavor of the salmon, but Guava Smoked's salmon belly is just grilled in a way that makes the salmon sweet/crispy and still get traces of the salmon taste as well. It's definitely not your traditional Japanese-style way of cooking salmon belly but really just their own. I'd go back and get this again. Another thing too. I'd get this with beer. This would hit very hard with alcohol but because I don't drink I need a kombucha. The grilled salmon belly would go perfect with it. Cheers! Uncle was very helpful and kind when serving and if you dine-in he brings it to your table.

There is a dedicated parking lot behind the restaurant that is shared with the other businesses in the same building. When I walked into the restaurant at about 1pm on a Wednesday, I was surprised to find it almost empty. It's a pretty large space, so the lack of patrons was rather glaring. There was one person sitting at the counter facing the kitchen and one employee working. This was my very first visit to Guava Smoked so I asked the person at the counter what he recommends. He said the two most popular meats are the kalbi and the spicy pork. "Perfect!" I thought, because those were the two options I was eyeing. Unfortunately, they were out of kalbi that day. Bummer... Nothing else on the menu caught my eye, so I ordered a smoked spicy pork plate to go. The spicy pork was good. Did it blow my mind? I wouldn't say it did. But it was satisfying enough. Honestly, I really wish they had kalbi available when I went. Hopefully next time I stop in they will.

The owner was very friendly and took the time to recommend dishes for us, including the laulau and lechon kawali. We also ordered the BBQ short ribs. Overall, it was a good experience trying Hawaiian food, but it's just not really our type of cuisine. The laulau was quite dry, and the preparation felt more like meat that had been boiled or cooked in liquid, which isn't something I usually enjoy. The lechon kawali had a crispy pork belly texture, topped with something similar to a salsa, but it didn't suit our taste either. Unfortunately, the cabbage served with it also had some black spots, which was off-putting. The BBQ short ribs were the highlight of the meal and the dish we enjoyed the most. We appreciate the experience and the hospitality, but the flavors just didn't quite match our personal preferences.

Then someone wanted to change from rice to poi. I tried many times and no one answered. Their voice mailbox was full. We e ended going there to make the change. He gentleman looked like he was working be himself. We bads to wait almost a half hour for him to finish the order. 2. Price - the prices were higher than expected. All the plates were $26.00 and up. 3. Food - The poi was very tasty and fresh, although a bit watery. The lau lau had a lot of lean pork filling, not a lot of leaves. The long rice didn't have much chicken and was a bit watery too. We enjoyed the sweet potato. There was also lomi salmon, haupia onion and chili pepper water. 4. As mentioned before there isn't much parking. The restaurant wasn't busy when we got there. Overall the food and service was OK. The price was a bit high.
