Wanted to get some Japanese food and this restaurant was recommended by someone that works at the Ko Hana distillery. The restaurant was only about a 10 minute drive from our hotel in Waikiki, but the parking lot is a joke on a weekend night. There was not only no parking in the lot but pretty much nowhere within a few blocks of the shopping center. We ended up going back to the hotel and taking a Lyft back to the restaurant. Of course when we got back there was 2 empty spots right in front of the place. One of the things I liked about this place was the authentic feel of it, like being at an Ikakaya in Tokyo. I even got to practice my Japanese with the staff. I ordered the skewer combo, (chicken, pork, beef and beef tongue). The wife got Okinomiyaki. She said she thought it was better than the Okinomiyaki we had in Osaka, but I didn't agree. Overall this was a great place to eat and the prices were pretty reasonable. read more

Came to Carp Dori on a Thursday night at 9PM, and there was lots of parking in the open lot. There was no wait to be seated, even though we didn't have reservations. I wasn't super hungry, so I liked how they had small portions of everything. I tried some of the karaage chicken and the bacon wrapped mushroom. Both were flavorful and hit the spot for a light meal. I also got a chuhi, which was delicious and served in a generous sized mug. I tried the various flavors that my friends ordered, and lemon was one of my favorites. Service was friendly and attentive. Food here is pretty tasty and authentic though in order to be full, it's expensive because you have to pay per screwer. For 3 adults it came out to about $80 a person!!! Because of the price I did not think it was worth it, especially because service was terrible. The biggest downside about the service is that we were never checked on and never had waters refilled. This was especially a problem because the food is salty, and I was dying for water and could never get their attention. For the price, I expect my waters to be refilled and to be checked on. Pros: Sashimi was super fresh. The Ume and Shiso wrapped meats were unique compared to other screwer places and very unique. Cons: rice balls were supposed to be crispy, but they were super mushy. I usually come here at night time so it's too late to get the lunch special, but I was finally able to try it! The amount of food you get is well worth the $18.99! This visit we got the Yakiniku Teishoku, Sashimi Teishoku and assorted skewers with Hamachi Sashimi. The Sashimi Teishoku is great value with 6 pieces of sashimi ( 2 salmon, 2 ahi, 2 hamachi). It was my husband's first time trying yakitori. We came for lunch and they had teishoku lunch specials that came with miso soup, rice, side salad, potato salad & tofu for $18.99 (such a good deal)! I reviewed this place before and I wanted to update it! I called ahead this time and they said there would be seating available. Husband and I wanted meat and thankfully this place was open. The menu is extensive! We agreed on mainly getting yakitori instead of venturing into the other menu items but my husband wanted the chicken skin. It was moderately crispy but a little tough at times. Our skewers were beef, pork, chicken meatball, minced chicken, enoki bacon, pork belly tomato, and chicken and onion. Our top favorites were the chicken onion, minced chicken, and the meatball. For me the beef was tough, the pork was so good but salty, and enoki was nice but as usual sometimes hard to eat. Service was moderately good despite the busy place. I loved the seating as we got a booth this time instead of the counter. Husband told me to give an extra star for the bidet bathroom. :) Honestly the worst part about this place is the parking. No knock on the restaurant but it's always too congested. read more

I was so excited to come here as 3 of our friends highly recommended this spot. Great food and reasonable prices is what they told us. My mom and I love yakitori as we used to always go eat it when we lived in Japan. We ordered the lunch special with yakitori, tofu, rice and miso soup. It came with 4 skewers and the only yakitori that I liked was the Tsukune which was super flavorful. The beef yakitori was dry and tough with no flavor. The chicken one did not have enough salt and we were pretty disappointed. Rice was dry and seemed like was sitting in the cooker for over a day. We did not eat the rice. The ambience here is cool. Came in, not knowing what to expect. To our surprise, it was such an upbeat bar style Japanese restaurant. We got the ramen, perfect balance of everything. The noodles were very good and the broth so flavorful. Just enough meat and vegetables to enjoy everything. Hamachi sashimi was buttery. The ramens were phenomenal! The Paitan Ramen was definitely the standout -- rich, flavorful, and easily our favorite. The shoyu ramen was still tasty, just not quite on the same level as the Paitan. The corn, asparagus, and gyoza were perfect for the keikis, and the tofu was sooo good too! The only downside was my mom's tempura order. It came out really late, and by the time it arrived, the rest of us were already pau eating. Such a bummer because everything else was delicious and the environment was really nice. To top it all off, we made a last-minute decision to order the oysters, and wow... those were super good too! I would come again and make sure we do not order the tempura plate. read more

Really loved this place. Me and my friends frequent here quite often so I'm disappointed I have to give them 3 stars after this last visit. Only thing keeping me from rating it even lower is that the food, drinks and vibes are always good. My friend has a service dog that we've brought multiple times before but for some reason this time they decided to give us a hard time. They asked us for proof and documentation which you're not supposed to do! Our party was already seated by the time I got there and even after I arrived, no one checked or took our order. Turns out it's because they were waiting for proof? Friend ended up pulling up the documents and had to explain her condition to the server that he is indeed a service dog which is insane she had to share that. What's crazy too, ANOTHER service dog came in right after! Not sure if they gave them a hard time too but it didn't look like it. Server said it's because there are people who try to pass normal pets as service animals and cause scenes, which I totally get and understand, but you're still not supposed to ask for proof and having the owners disclose their disability. After that, everything was fine - our service dog never caused a scene even with the other service animal in the restaurant so that should've been a telling. Again, we've dined here multiple times before with the service dog so don't understand what made this visit different. Other than that, the food is good. Not sure if we'll be back again... or if we do and get the same treatment then that'll probably be the last. read more

Hubby and I decided to stop by here for dinner after a workshop. They were quite busy. This place was really.noisy tonight. The food was okay this time around. Hubby got the Tempura Value Set and Hiroshima Ramen. The Tempura was too greasy so we took it home to air fry some of the oil out. He liked the Hiroshima Ramen. I got the Paitan Shoyu Ramen. It was really salty. I only ate the ramen and did not drink the soup. I kept drinking water when I got home. Maybe those was an off day for the chef. There were people that left earlier, but they do not clean the tables to sit people. Once we sat and ordered food, the food was mediocre. Service was spotty and we had to wave them down. What a find! We've passed by this place a few times in the past but just never had the opportunity to check it out, until this time. We got there upon opening and was seated in a cozy booth. Love the Japanese baseball decor that greets you and Japanese programs on the tvs. We ordered some happy hour foods, as well as some sticks and okonomiyaki. Everything was delicious. Steak was a little overcooked, but still tasted good. They don't have much of a selection of alcoholic drinks, though. Actually, it's quite minimal. I think they're missing an opportunity there to expand their beers, sake, and whiskey. But we'll be back, I want to try more stuff on their menu. Found this little izakaya tucked away in McCully Shopping Center tonight, and already planning my return visit! Carp Dori delivers authentic Japanese pub fare with impressive value and zero pretension. Note: Happy hour is 5pm-6:45pm, and 10pm-11:30pm. Our party of 4 dove into their happy hour offerings first - the Chicken Karaage was crispy outside with juicy meat inside (no dry overcooked nonsense here). The Tako Wasabi packed enough flavor with wasabi heat. We paired these starters with a pitcher of ice-cold beer that kept flowing while we waited for the gyoza. The real stars were the value sets. For the uninitiated, Carp Dori specializes in kushiyaki (Japanese skewers), and their value sets are the way to go. We ordered both options: * The tempura set with six diverse skewers including a standout pork roll with shiso leaf and some prawns * The 5-piece skewer set featuring beef, ox tongue, pork, chicken & onion, and chicken meatball. Don't sleep on their onigiri either! The konbu version was simple but so satisfying - perfect rice texture with that hint of seaweed umami. It was filled with a lot of rice and could've used more konbu in my opinion. The tofu salad provided a lighter counterpoint to all the skewers and fried items - fresh and well-dressed. Nothing too special. Service was exactly what you want at an izakaya - quick, straightforward, no unnecessary frills. They kept our drinks filled and food coming at a perfect pace. A great hidden spot for a late night eat, my friends and I had just finished working out and wanted something relatively healthy and this hit the spot. Tucked in the corner on the third floor of the mccully shopping center, I never knew this existed, but I am glad I tried it. It was a nice healthier option than everything else which seemed like fried food at that time. I did not know what to expect with the fried garlic but it was delicious, sweet even from the fry- it was great to spread on something or on its own. Just a little work to peel it. The beef tongue was a hit with my party and we all almost wanted more and I really liked the shiso leaf with the ume, you don't get to have that flavor everywhere. We got the pork, mushroom wrapped in bacon, and shiitake skewers along with the skewer platter, tempura, oyster kamameshi, okonomiyaki, karaage chicken, and a selection of chu-hi's. The skewers are always good, well seasoned and a great selection. I always favor the mushroom ones, but all of them have a nice char grill to them. The tempura was good, the oyster kamameshi was unique and delicious - could've used a little shoyu, but other than that, no notes. The okonomiyaki was yummy and they let you do your kewpie drizzle. One of my favorite restaurants located in the McCully Shopping Center! I would recommend making a reservation or calling ahead for availability because this place can get quite busy. There is street level and underground parking, but be aware that it could get hectic. The inside is traditional and cozy. They offer a good amount of izakaya dishes and drinks. My favorite is their Hiroshima style okonomiyaki. It's like a savory pancake loaded with cabbage, meat, seafood, yakisoba noodles and topped with pickled ginger, seaweed, okonomiyaki sauce, mayonnaise, and bonito flakes. I come for one thing and one thing only - motsunabe. This place offers the most affordable motsunabe on the island at just $17 per person, and the portions are incredibly generous. The motsunabe here is a true masterpiece: the buttery, sweet motsu combined with a savory dashi broth and a mountain of cabbage is simply divine. They don't skimp on the chives and burdock either, which adds to the rich and satisfying experience. And what better way to finish off the meal than with a serving of ramen, perfectly soaking up all the delicious flavors left in the pot? It's like a going home for mom... Hiroshima is her hometown and Carp Dori's decor is filled with Hiroshima's hometown baseball team the Carp. Let me tell you we came hungry...half way through knowing we couldn't finish it all we decided to hold off on some of the skewers though all was so amazing each different yet taste was cooked just perfectly the Goma Kanpachi mom loved it was like a poke style as the sashimi was tossed in coma shoyu sauce, the agedashi was a refreshing side to compliment it all, cold dash noodle was okay I guess in comparison to the other dish this one didn't impress me much though don't get me wrong it was good. We dined there on valentines night for a quick casual dinner. It's a nice little place with a sports (baseball) theme. We were seated and looked through the menu as the wait staff brought us water. They had specials as well as ramen, and yakitori, which we went for. The wait staff was friendly and answered all our questions, as well as suggested some item we should try. We placed our order and the food came out pretty quick. We ordered some of their special (6 piece) tempura as well as different types of yakitori and some side dishes. We were lucky that we made reservations for 6pm and they had happy hour til 6:45pm. I am not sure if it's only weeknights, so you would have to check. All the food we ordered were cooked nice, hot and fresh. We liked that we could order yakitori AS well as tempura. Overall, our experience here was pretty good from the food (a couple of things could have been cooked a little less) the wait staff was nice, and the restaurant was nice and cozy.... I found Carp Dori in the McCully Shopping Ctr.(top left hand corner facing the center) on yelp and thought I'd take chance on them if they would take our reservation for 10. When I called, Kei was friendly and took my reservation without hesitation. When we arrived, there was one other small group of people. After they left, we had the whole place to ourselves which was nice. They had a lunch teishoku menu that had a variety of dishes. I chose the karaage chicken teishoku for $21. It came with a bowl of rice, miso soup, and a cube of tofu to start. I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch and ate all of it. It was just enough for me as it was for the rest of my party. Others ordered Yakiniku Teishoku, Yakitori Teishoku, and miso butter corn ramen. Nobody had leftovers! Also, a nice perk is that they have bidets in their restrooms!
