Food here is pretty tasty and authentic though in order to be full, it's expensive because you have to pay per screwer. For 3 adults it came out to about $80 a person!!! Because of the price I did not think it was worth it, especially because service was terrible. The biggest downside about the service is that we were never checked on and never had waters refilled. This was especially a problem because the food is salty, and I was dying for water and could never get their attention. For the price, I expect my waters to be refilled and to be checked on. Pros: Sashimi was super fresh. The Ume and Shiso wrapped meats were unique compared to other screwer places and very unique. Cons: rice balls were supposed to be crispy, but they were super mushy. Edamame was way overcooked. Service was super slow and never checked on us. All in all, I don't think I would come back because of the value.

Service was good and food was delivered quickly. The yakitori was good but the sauce was not as flavorful. I liked the beef tongue the best. The salad was pretty good with an onsen egg inside. They still have the bell at the table to call for the waiter.

It was last minute, my daughter was graduating and wanted to eat Japanese food for lunch. I found Carp Dori in the McCully Shopping Ctr.(top left hand corner facing the center) on yelp and thought I'd take chance on them if they would take our reservation for 10. When I called, Kei was friendly and took my reservation without hesitation. When we arrived, there was one other small group of people. After they left, we had the whole place to ourselves which was nice. They had a lunch teishoku menu that had a variety of dishes. I chose the karaage chicken teishoku for $21. It came with a bowl of rice, miso soup, and a cube of tofu to start. I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch and ate all of it. It was just enough for me as it was for the rest of my party. Others ordered Yakiniku Teishoku, Yakitori Teishoku, and miso butter corn ramen. Nobody had leftovers! Also, a nice perk is that they have bidets in their restrooms! Excellent experience and would definitely go back. Arigato gozaimasu

food, the service, to the cozy Japanese-style vibe. We're all about the grilled skewers here the chicken skins, bacon wrapped enoki mushrooms, sausage, grilled corn, and asparagus were all so ono. So much flavor in every bite! They've also got a solid menu with shabu shabu hot pot, sizzling hot pan dishes, ramen noodles, and more perfect for sharing with friends or fam. My son can't stop talking about the watercress salad with Japanese sesame dressing light, fresh and super tasty. The atmosphere feels like a little piece of Japan warm lighting, cool decor and such a welcoming crew. We noticed how they even greet new customers walking in makes you feel right at home. If you're looking for a chill, delicious spot with that comforting izakaya energy, Carp Dori is the one. :))

Amazing amazing amazing! Food, service & everything was TOP TIER! My husband & I came to mccully to go to our usual sushi spot but they were closed. We stumbled upon this place and it was so goood. It was my husband's first time trying yakitori. We came for lunch and they had teishoku lunch specials that came with miso soup, rice, side salad, potato salad & tofu for $18.99 (such a good deal)! The server was also super friendly and I give him props for being the only server, making the drinks, cleaning tables, making the food and checking out customers. Although it was busy & he didn't show that he was having a hard time. He was very very nice. I really enjoyed my lunch here and would love to come again! Everything was sooo good

Every time I come here I am transported back to Japan with the friendly staff vibes and variety of options for food at an amazing quality! I usually come here at night time so it's too late to get the lunch special, but I was finally able to try it! The amount of food you get is well worth the $18.99! This visit we got the Yakiniku Teishoku, Sashimi Teishoku and assorted skewers with Hamachi Sashimi. The Sashimi Teishoku is great value with 6 pieces of sashimi ( 2 salmon, 2 ahi, 2 hamachi). The Yakiniku Teishoku has meat and onions. All Teishoku sets come with miso soup, rice, side salad, potato salad and egg. I recommend the Asparagus, Mushrooms, chicken skin, Miso Pork & Shiso, and Chicken with Ume for the Yakitori options!

I reviewed this place before and I wanted to update it! I called ahead this time and they said there would be seating available. Husband and I wanted meat and thankfully this place was open. The menu is extensive! We agreed on mainly getting yakitori instead of venturing into the other menu items but my husband wanted the chicken skin. It was moderately crispy but a little tough at times. Our skewers were beef, pork, chicken meatball, minced chicken, enoki bacon, pork belly tomato, and chicken and onion. Our top favorites were the chicken onion, minced chicken, and the meatball. For me the beef was tough, the pork was so good but salty, and enoki was nice but as usual sometimes hard to eat. Service was moderately good despite the busy place. I loved the seating as we got a booth this time instead of the counter. Husband told me to give an extra star for the bidet bathroom. :) Honestly the worst part about this place is the parking. No knock on the restaurant but it's always too congested.

I was so excited to come here as 3 of our friends highly recommended this spot. Great food and reasonable prices is what they told us. My mom and I love yakitori as we used to always go eat it when we lived in Japan. We ordered the lunch special with yakitori, tofu, rice and miso soup. It came with 4 skewers and the only yakitori that I liked was the Tsukune which was super flavorful. The beef yakitori was dry and tough with no flavor. The chicken one did not have enough salt and we were pretty disappointed. Rice was dry and seemed like was sitting in the cooker for over a day. We did not eat the rice. The ambience here is cool. I love Japanese baseball and the place looked so promising but unfortunately missed the mark.

Yesterday I got to try the Dipping Noodle Hiroshima Style and it was very tasty. Also, the service was very friendly and helpful.

Hubby and I decided to stop by here for dinner after a workshop. They were quite busy. This place was really.noisy tonight. The food was okay this time around. Hubby got the Tempura Value Set and Hiroshima Ramen. The Tempura was too greasy so we took it home to air fry some of the oil out. He liked the Hiroshima Ramen. I got the Paitan Shoyu Ramen. It was really salty. I only ate the ramen and did not drink the soup. I kept drinking water when I got home. Maybe those was an off day for the chef. We enjoyed the food here before and will definitely come back. The staff are very nice and service was great.

The bacon wrapped tomato was a winner. Everything was great.

What a find! We've passed by this place a few times in the past but just never had the opportunity to check it out, until this time. We got there upon opening and was seated in a cozy booth. Love the Japanese baseball decor that greets you and Japanese programs on the tvs. We ordered some happy hour foods, as well as some sticks and okonomiyaki. Everything was delicious. Steak was a little overcooked, but still tasted good. They don't have much of a selection of alcoholic drinks, though. Actually, it's quite minimal. I think they're missing an opportunity there to expand their beers, sake, and whiskey. But we'll be back, I want to try more stuff on their menu. I love the atmosphere and the staff is super friendly.

Found this little izakaya tucked away in McCully Shopping Center tonight, and already planning my return visit! Carp Dori delivers authentic Japanese pub fare with impressive value and zero pretension. Note: Happy hour is 5pm-6:45pm, and 10pm-11:30pm. Our party of 4 dove into their happy hour offerings first - the Chicken Karaage was crispy outside with juicy meat inside (no dry overcooked nonsense here). The Tako Wasabi packed enough flavor with wasabi heat. We paired these starters with a pitcher of ice-cold beer that kept flowing while we waited for the gyoza. The real stars were the value sets. For the uninitiated, Carp Dori specializes in kushiyaki (Japanese skewers), and their value sets are the way to go. We ordered both options: * The tempura set with six diverse skewers including a standout pork roll with shiso leaf and some prawns * The 5-piece skewer set featuring beef, ox tongue, pork, chicken & onion, and chicken meatball. Don't sleep on their onigiri either! The konbu version was simple but so satisfying - perfect rice texture with that hint of seaweed umami. It was filled with a lot of rice and could've used more konbu in my opinion. The tofu salad provided a lighter counterpoint to all the skewers and fried items - fresh and well-dressed. Nothing too special. Service was exactly what you want at an izakaya - quick, straightforward, no unnecessary frills. They kept our drinks filled and food coming at a perfect pace. The only minor issue was that the space got noticeably warmer throughout our meal. By the end, we were all feeling a bit toasty (though the beer helped mitigate this!). The total damage for our feast that completely satisfied four hungry adults? Just $85 before tip. Absolute steal for the quality and quantity of food. If you're looking for authentic izakaya vibes without breaking the bank, Carp Dori delivers. Get there early for happy hour and come hungry.

The best izakaya in Hawaii in my opinion! We tried the Hiroshima Okonomiyaki--the seasoning was amazing! The octopus was fresh and chewy, and the yakitori were delicious! The sashimi was a bit frozen, but still passable. The indoor space is small, so make a reservation! We booked ours through a Japanese website (thanks, Google Translate!). The staff were super attentive. Overall, I loved it!

They have shared parking lot with the surrounding establishments which was fairly open since it was so late (I think they were the only one open by that time). We were able to get seated fairly quickly (bar seating style, not individual tables, although they have a few of those as well). This spot is decently small but they seem to fit everyone in fairly efficiently. Upon seating we were given menus and waters after. The waiters are decently attentive since we were seated right by their kitchen/back of house opening. We got: * Chicken Karaage: 10/10, I would heavily recommend this. The chicken was juicy and lightly crispy. What MADE this dish was actually the egg sauce on top. It acts as the aioli but clearly much more homemade and heathier, with egg white pieces and the sauce made of egg yolk etc. We ordered this twice bc it smacked. * Taco Rice: 7/10, okay so... I'm not even going to lie when I say that I was a bit tipsy already when I agreed on ordering this. I THOUGHT this was a TAKO (octopus) rice. NOT a TACO (Mexican) rice. It tasted like I was eating taco bell, which wasn't bad per se but just felt weird being in an izakaya. * Beef Tongue: 9/10. I would recommend this as well. The beef tongue was tender and flavorful. They didn't go overboard with the sauce on top to let the meat shine through. * Seared Aburi: 8/10. The person I was with order it. It was good, no strong feelings about it. It was cool to watch them sear it though. It was on the fishy-er side tho, compared to other forms of sashimi (likely due to the skin still present). * Hot Sake: I would recommend this if you don't enjoy drinking. While its hot/warm, it helps it go down a lot more! Honestly I enjoyed the fried chicken so much I would actually come back just to eat that and maybe try some of their other dishes. Plus the izakaya experience definitely felt really authentic as it was bustling when we visited.

The food itself?…read moreHighlights for sure -- the tacorice in the stone bowl was excellent, the hamachi with eggplant was a standout, and the rafute, while a bit dry, still had its moments. The kitchen is clearly talented. But everything else? A real disappointment. The server was cold and unfriendly the entire visit. The larger tables of four around us were getting great, attentive service -- smiles, check-ins, the works. But when she dropped food at our table? Not even a word. It felt pretty obvious that since the bigger tables had an automatic 20% tip guaranteed, our table just wasn't worth the effort to her. And that's exactly the problem with sneaking an auto-gratuity in fine print at the bottom of the menu -- it creates exactly this kind of situation. If the service had been genuinely good, I would have happily tipped 20% on my own. But to have it quietly tacked on after being largely ignored? That feels sneaky and disrespectful. This place used to be a go-to for me. Today really dropped the ball. Be upfront about the tip policy and treat every table like it matters -- because to the customer, it always does.
