Another awesome sushi experience with some good old friends. Thanks to Paul C for ordering all the different Omakase . The highlight was the condensed gelato with corn flakes and frozen berries . We ordered the big size and lucky we did because my bowl is empty . Always wonderful service from Shelly the waitress to the everyone behind the sushi bar . My go to for good fresh quality sushi . Chef Ryuji Murayama is a master of his craft -- and his promise of "textured" fish rings true in every bite. Expect meaty, refreshing flavors carefully paired with unique ingredients. I've been coming here for years, and Chef Murayama still delivers on every level: genuine, friendly, and embodying the aloha spirit. Whether you're here for lunch or omakase, prepare to leave completely satisfied. And if you're on the go, his takeout bowls are a must. Food: 5/5 - Impeccably fresh fish sourced from Japan, Hawaii's fish auction, and select local produce. The dinner omakase was simply stellar: (Nodoguro / Blackthroat Seaperch) Parking: 4/5 - Valet in the back or metered street parking. Bold diners might gamble with Walmart parking nearby. Service: 5/5 - Impeccable across the board, with Chef Murayama himself going above and beyond to make every visit personal.

Ok let me tell you... size does matter! The portions of the fish and each individual omakase dish was HUGE. i was painfully full at the end of the omakase i think it was 16 dishes for Omakase. The TORO ZUKE was hands down one of the best things I've eaten. It's toro that is marinated in shoyu and other seasonings. It so warming and flavorful! And the shrimp shells with curry powder?? Who would have know this would be such a delicious and addicting combo! If you go make sure you get plenty room in your stomach!

Taste: 5 Creativity/Authenticity: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Service: 5 Bang for your buck: 5 Yo are you kidding me?! I've been to the best of the best sushi restaurants all over and this spot blows them all out the water!! No way!! I almost wanna gate keep this place! First off it's omakase only which is the only way to experience sushi, no rolls with mayo and sauce all over it! Chef choice how it's supposed to be and it is worth every penny! Now it's bold to say this is the best sushi spot, but I've been to Nozawa bar in LA, Sushi Gen, and even sushi bar and this place out flavors them by miles!! Not to mention the chef here is knowledgeable and dedicated to making the sushi an experience you've never had! Get the monkfish liver and thank me later!! Service here is great fast and as good as it can get. Ambiance here is def a date spot, not fancy at all but better than a fancy spot. Price can be high for some people $185 for omakase but I've spent more and this place is way way better!! Overall I'm sad that it's in Hawaii and I live in LA but I will come here every time now! Thanks chef for the food and experience simply amazing

I have been coming to Sushi Murayama for over 7 years now and this place is still one of my top choices for places to have Omakase. Omakase phrase literally is, "I leave it up to you". It's most commonly used when dining at Japanese restaurants where the customer leaves it up to the chef to select and serve seasonal specialties. The prices went up.... Like everything else in Hawaii unfortunately. However, it is still worth the experience here. What makes Chef Ryuji Murayama stand out is the way he prepares his sushi. Most sushi places.... It's just fish and rice...Chef Ryuji explains the process in preparing his dishes. The menu items change with the seasons of fish and ingredients that are available as well. For example, his fried hamachi belly, one of my favorites this time... he soaked it for four days and did some magical thing to the outside flaky batter thing before frying it on spot. Soooo good. I took my new boyfriend to experience Omakase sushi for the first time. He asked, "why do I close my eyes when I eat the sushi?" I told him, it's the flavors, the deliciousness and sometimes the way it just melts on my tongue and slide down my throat. He replied, "wow.... I think you're enjoying the sushi more than you enjoy me lol". Chef Ryuji laughed. I was skeptical if my new boyfriend would appreciate and enjoy Omakase sushi being that he's from the mainland and is sometimes picky about food and texture. To my surprise he really really enjoyed the food and the experience here. The atmosphere is like business casual... it's super comfortable in here and Chef Ryuji is fun to interact with when you dine at the sushi counter. After 7 years, this is still one of my top favorite omakase sushi places to dine in at.

Recently discovered and tried their takeout poke bowls and it is a game changer!! One of our new favorites if you're looking for an affordable sushi meal. We've tried the spicy ahi poke, sweet shrimp, hamachi zuke, and salmon ikura. They are always very generous with the fish for the price you pay. I recommend calling to place a phone order. There is a loading zone you could park in or have someone wait in the car while you grab your order if you're bringing it home. 10/10 and we will be back soon!

**This review is for the takeout poke bowls only ** As a poke lover, when I heard about these poke bowls with quality ingredients AND for a great price (basically everything is under $17), I knew I had to try this place out.. asap lol I called ahead and ordered a spicy tuna bowl with a wagyu rice upgrade ($14.50) and a salmon ikura bowl, also with a wagyu rice upgrade ($17.50) At first glance, the containers look small, but the portion was actually pretty filling SPICY TUNA: I enjoyed how this bowl was unique in that it had fresh ahi cubes on top, but a layer of spicy ahi "paste" as well. It resulted in a dish that was enjoyable not only in flavor, but texture as well. The fish was definitely good quality - no stringy pieces here! SALMON IKURA: this bowl did have quite a bit of raw onion, so if you aren't an onion fan, I wouldn't recommend this one. However, the salmon pieces were buttery, the ikura was delicious, and the flavors paired very well together WAGYU RICE UPGRADE: both bowls were delicious with the wagyu rice upgrade. The rice had a meaty umami flavor to it that really made the dish feel extra indulgent Also, it is definitely worth noting that the bowls come with ginger... not thin slices of sushi ginger like you see elsewhere, but big chunks of ginger that are candied! I'm not a ginger fan usually, but the ginger in the bowls were SO good and it really brought the bowls to the next level. I definitely recommend trying this place out and I can't wait to come back and try the other menu items!

One star off for having no chicken or any proteins for the udon for the kids. Other than that, the $180 16 piece omakase was a surprisingly satisfying dinner. Sure, it had no premium pieces I was looking such as hotate, amaebi, or uni but it really made up for it with thick cuts of nigiri, red vinegar rice, and zero fishiness on any of their offerings. Wife did detect slight fishiness on the oyster shoote though. Toro was melt in your mouth tender but didn't have that sweetness from toyosu market. Highlight for me was the aburi nodoguro. Really brought out the fish fattiness and tenderness. Tobiko was very sweet and not overly salty like in most places. Saba wrapped in shiso and kombu was also very creative. Ginmedai with shaved yuzu peel and sea salt was also very good. It kinda mimics the yuzu salt that's very popular in Japan. Squid with shark fin top with honey is really a nice touch. Great textures coming through with the fin. Overall a great experience for the price.

Sushi Murayama reminded me of several sushi restaurants I visited in Japan. There is no noticeable signage and you'll completely miss it if you don't see the sushi bar inside. Once inside, the atmosphere is very authentic and there's the distinct smell of fresh sashimi in the air. Dinner was omakase. We had the 10 dishes for $100. The other choice was 16 dishes for $180. Each dish was made of fresh sashimi, complemented with some ingenious ingredients. For example, ikura with house soy sauce topped with grated mountain yam. Or Japan Sea Jack seasoned with sea salt and orange. The dishes were unique and made with high quality, fresh, raw seafood. Sashimi used in the various dishes included ahi, ika, salmon, oyster, sea bass, niboshi, iriko, ikura, sea jack, oyster, and dungeness crab. The service here is excellent. Each dish was brought out in a very timely manner. We never had to wait long between dishes and the servers would constantly check on our water and tea. I would highly recommend this place if you're looking for fresh sushi made with a unique combination of ingredients. $100 may seem like a lot for 9 pieces of sushi and an oyster shooter but when you see the quality and innovative way in which each dish is made, the experience is worth it!

The poke bowls are so good! I got the salmon ikura one, tastes super fresh and it's a good amount of food. Parking is kinda meh at 808 center, can find street parking or at walmart if you don't want to valet. The restaurant itself is very cozy looking, I just got takeout though. Quick service!

It's been a while since I've been here but this review is on my last visit where I ordered takeout. I ordered the mini salmon ikura and my husband got the mini maguro with garlic miso and wagyu rice. I called in the order and luckily I did cause the wait was 20 mins. When I got there, the place was packed. I was a little surprise because it was a weekday. They also have some tables outside so that you can get your take out there if you want. My bowl was really good. I had the perfect amount of fish. I also really liked the ikura. Definitely will be ordering takeout again. The mini bowls are just a great deal.

We only spend money at two places. Best quality, excellent service. Yuji and daughter's are always on point.

Parking - It's valet parking. They have that cool parking thing like in the movies. Service - Staff was knowledgeable and if they didn't know they would grab somebody who knew more. Water was refilled. Reservations are a must. Food - Omakase style. There are three styles. But it was delicious. We had the 16 course meal. All was Oishii desu ne. 10/10 would recommend.

I decided to finally go out of my usual choices and try Ginza out. Ginza is located in the main ward building (the one with the theater), on the side, between Men's Warehouse and L&L. We got seated fairly quickly and was given water. Upon ordering we were also given edamame to nom on while we waited. We also decided to order two rolls, an AAB combo set to try a variety of things and fried calamari for food measure. We got: * Jen's Paradise: 9.7/10, heavily recommend. I was really craving sear salmon and it definitely helped to satisfy that craving. I didn't realize that the roll part itself ONLY has shrimp tempura within the nori (no crab salad, avo, etc). * Bomb: 8/10, clearly I lacked my reading comprehension skills this day because I didn't realize that this was baked... so when it came out and the entire roll was fully cooked I was heart broken. It tasted good, just not what I particular want at a sushi restaurant. * Chicken Karaage: 5/10. I do NOT recommend this. They remined me of mochiko chicken, but these were not very meaty or flavorful. * Fried Calamari: 10/10, fried to perfectly in my opinion, each piece was plump and delicious. * Miso Butterfish: 8.9/10, it was good, flaky and flavorful. Just not something I would order again, but it was good to try esp it is something they're supposedly known for. * Mixed Tempura: 10/10, yum I love mixed tempura, no notes, it was hot and crunchy. I would like to mention that our wait was quite long. I don't know why because they weren't like SUPER busy. It took 10-15 for us to get the miso soup and salad for the combo. +5 for the calamari, +5 for the first roll then a few minutes after for the rest. I feel like 15-20 minutes for our first actual item (calamari) to come is kind of crazy, it kept being brought to the wrong table (2-3 times). Our server apologized so its not a huge deal. Otherwise, I still enjoyed our experience. I would definitely come back again to try the rolls I would enjoy more (utilizing my reading skills a bit better LOL).

Cold, clean, glistening with that dangerous little shimmer that tells you somebody in the supply chain actually cared. You can taste the quality immediately. The kind of quality that silences a table for half a second. And credit where it is due: almost everything I tried ranged from very good to genuinely great. But then the room begins speaking. And suddenly the spell breaks. The atmosphere feels like someone took a serious sushi counter, stripped away all sensuality, all elegance, all ritual, then dropped it inside a fluorescent island diner where exhausted civilians came to discuss parking validation and Costco receipts. It is the culinary equivalent of wearing a Rolex with orthopedic sneakers. The contradiction never stops humming beneath the experience. You sit there eating beautiful fish while surrounded by an energy that feels strangely... transactional. Heavy. Casual in the least flattering way. A room with no mystery. No seduction. No gravity. Like Zippy's accidentally wandered into the tuna trade and struck gold. And on an island like Oahu, where atmosphere matters almost as much as the fish itself that becomes a real problem. Because sushi is not merely consumption. It is theater.Restraint.Texture.Whispered precision. The best sushi spots on Oahu understand this instinctively. They understand that exceptional fish alone is not enough. You are paying for transportive experience. For mood. For elegance. For the feeling that the evening exists slightly outside ordinary life. At Mitch's, the fish reaches for Tokyo while the room drags you back toward a tired strip mall off the freeway. And then there's the crowd. Not evil people. Not rude people. Just an oddly low-rent energy orbiting genuinely premium seafood. The kind of room where one table is eating remarkable otoro while another feels one argument away from discussing used-car financing over soy sauce packets. It creates dissonance. Especially considering the prices. Because at those prices, you begin comparing the full experience not merely the fish quality and that is where Mitch's stumbles hard. There are multiple sushi spots across Oahu that equal or surpass the seafood while also delivering beauty, atmosphere, intimacy, and actual emotional texture. So what remains is this strange contradiction: Mitch's serves fish far above the dignity of its own ambience Which almost makes it fascinating. Would I be back - no . You can get same and better quality fish, much better vine, better part of town for the same Price.

One of my favorite bites was a sashimi piece topped with something that looked like finely grated cheese (not sure what it actually was), but it melted perfectly with the fish and added a really unique savory flavor. The chefs and staff also had a good sense of humor. At one point they served kinki fish and jokingly explained that the English translation sometimes gets called "idiot fish," which got everyone laughing at the counter. The omakase is definitely on the pricier side, but the quality, presentation, and overall experience made it very satisfying. If you're looking for a refined sushi experience with great service and beautifully crafted bites, this place is worth the splurge.
