Surprised how the whipped topping is sweet enough for the entire dish; usually waffles are just a way for me to drink maple syrup but the maple actually doesn't suit the strawberry mochi well - stick with the whipped topping! Not super prominent strawberry flavor but still super good! Homemade Focaccia Benedict Portuguese Sausage, 5/5!!! Get this! The focaccia is so good - crispier and way better than egg muffin. The sauce is really good and the sausage was perfectly seasoned. The potatoes were very flavorful, maybe a little salty, but I actually think that's a good thing here since the onions and peppers cuts it so balances out. Celebrating my birthday here is always great! I love to come here for my birthday for the hula pie and the sweet birthday greeting they prepare. Of course the food is onolicious as always. Huge props to the bartended for asking if i wanted a classic or "their version", I really appreciate! Their version has coconut, which i was very excited to try. My partner and I ate dinner at Hula Grill Waikiki during our visit to Oahu. We went on a Thursday in October and they were quoting 45 minute waits for parties without a reservation. Luckily we had a reservation, so it was just a short 10 min wait until our table was ready. The entire hotel lobby is under renovation, so getting to the restaurant was very much giving 'back rooms'. But once inside the restaurant, you lose the construction sights and sounds fortunately. Our server was really good. I don't remember his name but he was super helpful as we navigated the menu with an allergy. He checked with the chef on every item we wanted to ensure it was safe. For food we started with the Hurricane Calamari. This was a good start - the calamari is a good portion for 2-4 people, but I wouldn't go past 4. Flavors on the calamari were solid, especially with the lime squeezed on top. For mains, my partner got the Coconut Seafood Chowder. He enjoyed it for the most part, but commented it needed some acidity to break up the richness. A few squeezes of lime did the trick. I ordered a two fish special which came with grilled swordfish and Mahi Mahi. The latter was really tasty, but I didn't enjoy the swordfish. I'll preface by saying, I don't eat swordfish often so maybe this is normal; but I found it to be really dense and rubbery. We ordered fries on the side because they sounded good. They were the good fries, you know the ones with the crispy outside - I just wished they were a little fresher / warmer. For dessert we got the Hula Pie. This was a pleasant surprise actually; we aren't usually hot fudge people, but this was dessert was really good. The macadamia ice cream really brings the dish home. For one app, two entrees, and a dessert the bill was over $150. Delicious as always! I've been to Hula Grill before and the food and atmosphere are still wonderful. I could have sworn they used to have a fresh fruit platter that I was looking forward to, but it looks like the menu has changed over the years. Came in on a whim for cocktails as we wait for the Aloha Festival. It's right above Duke's (walking into Duke's, look for stairs off to your right, just before Duke's hostess counter). They've got one of the best maitais I've had on the island. It features their house fruit juice mix (fresh squeezed mix of pineapple, passion, orange and guava juices, from local sources. View is absolutely beautiful. Listen to the waves, feel the breeze, smell the smells, vibe to the music. Perfect for midday reset. Nice music. Staff is very cool & personable. But the space and service are pleasant, with beautiful beach views from the patio. My grilled cajun mahi mahi tacos were fresh and tasty, with a nice slaw and sauce. My boyfriend's BLT croissant with spam and an egg was a hearty handheld, and also delicious. His came with a nice side of taro chips, and my side of tortilla chips and salsa were fine, but not necessary with the generously portioned tacos. We made a reservation beforehand but still had to wait 5-10 minutes for a table. Food was really good though! I really enjoyed the fresh catch and chow mein. My husband got the sesame and panko crusted tuna but he said it was too greasy. The coconut lychee rice that it came with was really good though. Drinks were really good! Walked in at Hula Grill for a quick bite in the bar area. Was able to get a table very quickly. Planned to order off the bar menu but the waiter said the dining room menu was also available. Ordered the fish tacos (2) but wanted to substitute fries for the tortilla chips. Wish granted - kudos. Also ordered a side dish of blistered green beans from the dinner menu. And a mai tai. Ordered the sauces on the side. Mai tai arrived first. Pretty standard. Nothing exceptional. Food came next. Fish tacos arrived with the accompaniments on the tacos; not on the side. Luckily, the accompaniments were pretty good. High marks for the tacos! The blistered green beans? What a disaster. I'd call them cold, dehydrated green beans. Not a good choice. All in all, the service was commendable. Our server tried to accommodate our requests. Fish tacos were good; green beans were a waste. Mahalo for Pi day!!!! And for managing to stay open despite closing half the restaurant (ocean view seating was exposed to very high winds)! Duke's had the longest line, so while in that line, one of the crew ran up the stairs, returning in a few minutes to say, "they are clearing a table right now for us"! Our group of 7 had a great table in the "lobby" across the restrooms and host reception, with a view of the Blue Note entrance. The happy hour menu "Early Bites" has regular priced items as well as appetizers which are only available during happy hour, which ends at six pm. Beverages are at happy hour prices. Everyone was sure to indulge in a famous mac nut topped Hula Pie, and some got to enjoy the mint chocolate chip Hula Pie (limited edition, specially made for St Paddy's) - and for only $3.14, that was a no brainer!). One had the tempura/kalbi taco combo, two shared a lobster roll, another two shared the burger, and of course the men had their own meal and finished them off with no problem! We were so hungry though, that I only got a peek at two of the dishes. (The lobster roll is double in size, the staff kindly sliced and served it to us in separate portions, or we would have made a mess of it ourselves, ha ha!). The reception staff, food, and wait service were all great! We loved our kama'aina trip to Waikiki, which, for locals, is sometimes a rarity! The only downside - we called to ask where best to park and were told they validated at the Ross' parking lot, and were given the lot name to plug into Maps. On checkout, though, we were told an entirely different parking lot name;( and therefore "ran" through Ross' with melting Hula Pie to quickly make a purchase (validated up to two hours with a $10 purchase) and avoid a big parking lot fee. We managed to do that and only had to pay $4, thank goodness! Good thing we love Ross', too, LOL. read more

I would definitely get them again if I find myself in Waikiki. Just the right amount of sweet and honey that no syrup is needed. It was busy for dinner. We came for the Pi Day special. Hula pie for $3.14 a slice. Regular vanilla or mint flavor Rosalani ice cream. We had seafood roll sandwich; 2 tacos - shrimp tempura and chicken with kalbi sauce. I liked the shrimp tempura the chicken was dry. I was told the seafood roll was good and the hamburger and fish and chips were also good. The slices were a bit melted but still tasted yummy. I came here specifically because I had seen in a review that someone was able to get a drink inside a hollowed-out pineapple, and my friend visiting the island was looking for a drink in a pineapple. I should have called ahead of time to find out, but I didn't, and that's on me, but they don't do drinks in pineapples any more (if they ever really did). We ended up getting a piece of hula pie to share with the table instead. It was delicious as always, plenty to share among three people, and I love that it's served on its own special plate with special sporks that say hula pie on them. We ended up coming here three times during our trip because of the famous Hula Pie! On our first visit, we had a reservation and stayed for dinner. We tried the steak and the corn chowder. I ordered my steak medium well, but part of it could've been cooked a little more to my liking. Even so, it still tasted really good. Our server was also excellent and very friendly throughout the meal. For our other two visits, we sat in the open bar area since we didn't want to wait for a table. Without a reservation, the wait can easily be over an hour to an hour and a half. The nice thing is that you can still order from the full menu while sitting at the bar. The only downside was that there wasn't much airflow in that area, so it got pretty warm while we were sitting there. The Hula Pie is definitely a must-try! It's not overly sweet and doesn't melt too quickly either. You really can't go wrong ordering it. read more

He was very attentive and super helpful and friendly with everything we needed. We shared the steak plate that came topped with mushrooms and mash potatoes. And we ordered a side of their cream corn. The steak was nicely grilled to a medium rare perfection. The mash potatoes and mushrooms paired well with the steak.. the corn was a little bland I felt like without a crunch to them also. Our final restaurant on the morning of our last day. It was sooo bittersweet but we went out with a bang going to Hula Grill!! The view was absolutely worth the wait and the service was efficient! I can definitely see why it gets high ratings. All of our dishes were delicious and fresh. The portion size is just right but I wouldn't mind a bit more fries. They took my number and said yes about five or five thirty. At five, our table was ready. It was by the bar and I guess there's a separate bar menu you can get but we didn't get that. This restaurant was conveniently located inside our hotel which was great, especially since we were navigating traveling with a four month old. The restaurant is right in front of the beach which makes for a great view. We ordered the prime rib and some Hawaiian classics for breakfast. Sad first night dinner.... We were so hyped coming here, because I wanted a macnut crusted fish, and the photos made everything look so good. Boy.... Were we disappointed. Got the salad, crab topped Mac nut fish, crab wontons and hula pie. We didn't understand why there were sauces on the table but soon realized they were a necessity. Crab wontons needed the vinaigrette sauce, due to lack of flavor. Salad was unexciting, and the fish was bland with barely any crab. That vinaigrette became the mvp to get us through. After a bit we ordered our entrees. I got the Crab Topped Mahi Mahi. It's pricey ($51) but was good. My wife got the BBQ Chicken. It was tender, meaty, and tasty. We had dinner tonight at Hula Grill Waikiki. They are owned by the same folks that owns Duke's which is right down stairs from this restaurant. They were busy especially considering that it is Saturday night but we were able to scoop up a couple of great seats at the bar. Brandon the bartender too great care of us while handling the other patrons and servers seeking his attention. We started off with the localicious salad and it was dressed perfectly and it was delicious. They were kind enough to split it into two plates for us without asking, nice touch! The Mai Tai, though heavily hyped, was just average in comparison. Food-wise, the crab wontons and Korean chicken wings alone make this place worth visiting--crispy, flavorful, and perfect to share. The real surprise was today's special: swordfish with lobster fried rice--absolutely amazing and deserving a permanent spot on the regular menu, not just a special. Between Hula Grill, and its rivalry downstairs, I recommend Hula Grill for breakfast for quality not quantity. The food I find to taste way better. We have been twice now and have ordered the vegetable omelet, strawberry mochi waffles and banana nut pancakes. I think the banana nut pancakes have too much nuts, but that's ok. We also ordered the macadamia nut coffee with almond milk which I could have cared less about. Service was good both times. We will be back for the next few days during our stay.
