Highway to the danger zone! And that Danger Zone is actually Flavortown. Woo! Hawaiian Food since 1947. They were even featured on Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives." First dinner on Oahu and I had it with some of Yelp Honolulu's greatest: "Auntie" Twinsie Nadine C., Cycle Buddy Randy S., Lyla D., E, Mayor of Chinatown Paul C., Angel H., Anthony, Irene M., and Dan O. Thank you to the "mystery" (I'm looking at you, Nadine) person who stole the bill. I shared a pork laulau combo and a regular side of beef stew at the insistence of Randy S. When Randy recommends something, you gotta listen. And wow, what a great meal. I had my lomi salmon with poi as I learned from Nadine years and years ago. It was bite upon bite of great flavors. There were even some appetizers, kalua pork nachos and lau lau lumpia, being passed around at one point and everything was delicious. As much as I don't like Guy Fieri, I have to agree with him. This place is five stars!

***4.5 STARS*** Cherry has been popped. Highway Inn Kaka'ako (HIK) has been under my radar for so long but I never tried them until recently when Joyce W., who is a Yelp Black All-Star from Arizona also Honolulu's Online Community Ambassador, came to town. We've been Yelp friends for over a decade and finally met IRL during her first trip to Hawaii a few days ago. I was scheduled at my part time job but left early that day to attend a get together welcoming her and celebrating this Aries' birthday. Highway Inn is a popular, local eatery serving Hawaiian cuisine since 1947 and has relocated multiple times in Waipahu. They also expanded in 2013 opening a location in Kaka'ako (SALT) and also Bishop Museum Cafe by Highway Inn in 2015 and later renamed as "Tutu's Place" in September 2025. For my Hawaiian food fix, I've been going to a popular eatery on N School St and eating it at my part time job. Probably the reasons why I never made my way here despite its great location in town. Shout out to Auntie (aka Nadine C.) for organizing this get together for Joyce and Michael from Arizona. We had a section seating 12 of us that consisted of 3 square tables next to each other. I arrived at the agreed 530pm but faced parking issues. The validated parking lot facing Ala Moana Blvd was full with a car waiting patiently for stall to free up so I then sought street parking only to no availability after circling multiple times so I ended up entering the parking structure at SALT. Shout out to Irene M. for arranging kalua pork nachos and Lau Lau lumpia for us to munch on. Those nachos were absolutely tasty and really liked the usage of sweet Okinawa purple potato chips that were sturdy to hold up the generous portion of tasty kalua pork topped with guacamole, salsa and sour cream. I'd order this again in a heart beat. The Lau Lau lumpia was unique but personally I'm not a fan of the commercialized sweet Thai chili sauce that came with it. I was the last one to order after everyone else had done so. Being it was my first time here, I consulted with my table mates and also got the Signature Hawaiian Plate. The restaurant was impressively packed and unaware how long it took for my food to arrive as I used the waiting time conversing with the group members as it's been ages since I last saw them. My dinner was delicious. I had the squid luau, that had generous chunks of Tako swimming in a tasty taro leaf stew in a creamy coconut sauce, poi and lomi salmon. I appreciated my poi was "day old" as I like that slight sourness. Not a fan of fresh poi as it resembles eating paste. The lomi salmon was a generous portion but it lacked the salty salmon presence I was looking for. The slices of Okinawan sweet potato and haupia brought a nice sweetness to my Hawaiian meal. One of my table mates had an extensive wait for his Mochiko chicken plate but when it finally came, it was served piping hot and piled generously. I was offered a sample and it was absolutely delicious. Service was above average. Although it was a full house, our server hustled back and forth, and also refilled our water cups multiple times. It was noisy throughout our meal as multiple conversations were going on from all areas. Remember to provide your license plate to the staff at the host station to arrange parking validation. Overall, I had a great first experience at HIK where I'd be game for a return visit. I'd like to sample more of their menu and order their kalua pork nachos. NOTE: Parking at SALT is contactless. Be sure to scan QR code to set up an account if you're not already established with the Metropolis app.

I really like Highway Inn. I was craving beef stew and we decided to come here because it's so good. I got the beef stew and my husband got the tasting plate. We both loved it. Also got some u'ala chips to share. All were excellent. We had a little bit of a wait to on a week night. We were surprised that it was so busy but everyone was working hard to get everyone seated as timely as possible. We didn't have to wait very long. This Kaka'ako location is nice and cozy. There's the whole parking structure too. I love it and would definitely recommend!

The yummiest Hawaiian food in town! Their service is quick and food never disappoints! They sometimes have live music which is always a plus when having dinner here.

My mom and I love this place when we want some Hawaiian food and we're in the area. I love their tacos and I'm always satisfied. The downside is it's a bit messy because the aioli sauce drips when you bite into the tacos. The laulau is always good and a staple my mom always eats when we go there. Love the haupia and you can really taste the coconut Lomi salmon is good as well and love eating it with the poi.

Was craving Hawaiian food and had to search for a place as Helena's was closed for the day. I don't even know how many times we've driven by but we were finally able to check it off the list. Called in the order when we were en route from the Hawaiian village and found street parking nearby. Food was ready within a few minutes of arrival and boy did the kalua pork smell good. Luckily there wasn't a ton of traffic on Ala Moana and was back in our room within 15 minutes. We ended up ordering the kalua pork combo and the loco moco w/fried rice. The kalua pork was hella tasty and definitely satisfied our craving. The loco loco was also tasty but was a bit disappointed with the fried rice. Definitely should've stuck with the white rice which would've saved myself $5 and could've ordered another side of the haupia! Oh and the potato/mac salad was pretty dang good as well. Would head back as it's close to where we normally stay while on the island.

Glad we got the sampler platter since it allowed us to try traditional Hawaiian food all in one. I appreciate the convenience of the brochure card, highlighting each of the items and guiding you on how some dishes should be paired together! We enjoyed everything, from the mashed taro root, to the steamed chicken and sweet potato, to slow roasted pull apart pork, and topping it off with coconut pudding. Portion of the sampler plate was perfect for 2 and priced very fair! Service was attentive. We also came at an odd time 3pm so there was no wait and plenty of seating either at the bar or tables. Such a good place to be introduced to Hawaiian food!

Pork Lau Lau tasting plate - IG @bougiefoodieboi

This is a fairly popular classic Hawaiian restaurant which appealed to me with their tasting plate. It can get busy with 30+ minute waits if you come after 6pm even on a weekday. Given America, a lot of places tend to have one choice with large portions, making it incredibly hard to try a variety of dishes in one sitting. The tasting plate here gives a very nice introduction to some of these Hawaiian food. I got the pork Lau Lau tasting plate which has Lau Lau, Kalua pig, chicken long rice, poi, lomi salmon, 'uala, squid luau, and haupia. Kalua pig is pretty good but also pretty common so it meets the mark. The Lau Lau is pork wrapped in taro leaves and it is very filling and flavorful, despite the small portions. The chicken long rice is a chicken ginger broth with chicken and a vermicelli noodle texture, and it is an instant favorite for me. Poi is the fermented kind here so it is quite sour, and not to my tastes. Lomi salmon is good but they are super stingy with the salmon. I only found a few pieces and mostly tomato. Squid luau is also an instant favorite for me - I don't think I see much of these in the mainland US so I'm glad to have tried it here. Haupia is a coconut pudding to satisfactorily end the night. My friend who is local told me to get pepper water (basically salt, water, and pepper) which gives the Lau Lau a nice spicy kick without modifying the true flavors much. Service here is good as they check up on you and give you water refills. I am not a fan of them tacking on a 5% service charge that does not go to tips to the front of house, so you'll end up paying more than you expect here. I'd rather they raise the prices slightly upfront than be caught by a slight sticker shock despite them mentioning it in the menu.

Located in Kakaako by Starbucks. The parking has an arm, however you do not need to pull a ticket. The Kakaako sampler was amazing- a little bit of everything. Totally shareable. We also got the pulehu ribs that came on a sizzling platter. Quick quick and efficient service!! thank you Taylor. Casual vacation, nice and clean, air conditioning is perfect. Not too cold. My husband accidentally dropped his fork. A couple minutes later our waitress came by and said here's a fork for you. Impressive as we didn't ask her for one. You can sign up for their rewards program. For birthdays, they give you 10% off a free dessert for your birth month to use once.

This little spot was a fun place to get a meal. Parking is easy in the lot. You need to register to pay for parking but it's really easy. The staff here is incredibly nice and sweet. They were very kind to us and our baby! :) very accommodating and understanding! The food variety was also good. I got the highway inn set and it was way too much food for me, but I appreciated the variety! My husband got the tripe stew set, which was also tasty. Sharing the two sets together was the perfect amount of food for us. I don't have anything to really compare the food to since I'm not too well versed in Hawaiian cuisine but we enjoyed the ambiance and the food here. Thank you!

This past Saturday my hubby and I came here for date night. It was the perfect spot as game 7 of the Word Series was being played on the TV in the bar. We watched the Dodgers win the World Series as we were eating. The restaurant wasn't busy when we got there, but filled out during our meal. I got the squid luau combo plate $16.99 with a side of pipikaula $4.99. My hubby got the mochiko chicken $18.99. My plate was so good. It came with rice, lomi salmon, sweet potato and haupia. They have the best squid luau. It's on the sweeter side. Their pipikaula is also different from other places. It's wet and juicy. I wish they gave more. I counted six little pieces in my bowl. My entree came out before my husband's. I saw our server go into the kitchen to ask about his plate. She brought it straight out from the back herself, which I appreciated. Free parking for the first hour and a half. There's also a 3% service charge for the kitchen.

    Guy Fieri was here!

Wait, we were able to get a reservation for 7 at 6:30p on a Sunday. Booked through myhighwayinn.com.

Can non vaccinated guest dine in through outdoor seating?

I don't recall any options for outdoor dining. They required a vax card and ID at the hostess stand.

I ordered the carbonara which was creamy and delicious. I'm not italian so i don't know how authentic it was but it was GOOD. My date ordered a salad with Korean Fried Chicken and beets. I don't know anything about beats but the KFC was FANTASTIC. Sugary deliciousness. We had a slice of olive oil cake with a spoon of rocky road to go with it. OMG. The olive oil cake is so delicious. It's almost like a pound cake but i guess made with olive oil so it also had this nice crust to it. But I would come back every single day for the rocky road ice cream. It was just rocky road but it was really good. Prices were average for honolulu. And service was good, not great. I guess the inside is pretty spacious in terms of tables but they pack you in like sardines so you can't help but be in your neighbors conversation. And it's a bit loud. After dinner, we ordered a few items from the bakery to eat on the plane. You have to take a number and wait for them to call it. I got 2 kouign Amannn, 2 Dubai coco puff, and half dozen green tea puff. The kouign amann is a circular croissant. I liked that it was soft and flaky and had a sweet, crispy glaze over it. The Dubai coco puff had a strong pistachio crunchy flavor but I thought it was way too sweet for me personally. The Star of the show are the green tea cream puffs! I would come back to just order that! The top filling tasted like a thick creamy brown butter green tea-flavored icing. The filling inside doesn't taste like brown butter and less thick but still really good. Overall, they had really good food and items from the bakery. Highly recommend the infamous green tea cream and chicken karaage dish! Customer service was quick and professional though I felt like our server wasn't that friendly lol. The restaurant was very clean and had plenty of seating.

I ordered the ultimate waffle which came with whip cream, blueberries, strawberries, butter and nuts. Also had a side of the fried potatoes...it was all very good. My friend had the loco moco with white rice and he said it was good, one his favorite. Service was perfect, waiter was very friendly and accommodating. There bakery has an amazing variety of sweets and we decided to get Cocoa Puffs to go...was told by a local that they are delicious and their signature item so had to try (when I'm not stuffed). I am no longer stuffed and tried the Cocoa Puffs....so good! Gotta go back and get the frozen Cocoa Puffs to take home! Lots of locals here so it must be good! Definitely recommend and will definitely return!

We were actually asked about 3 times by 3 different servers if we wanted a different drink besides water, which was ok with us. We appreciated them being very attentive to each table's needs. Food: 10/10. I ordered the Veggie Eggs Benedict and it tasted really good. I liked how the ingredients taste fresh and how the benny complemented very well with the potatoes. I also sampled my brother's fried rice and it was amazing. The Extreme Mess was flavorful too, a little bit on the saltier side for me but my boyfriend enjoyed it. Ambiance: We were seated outside but it was covered and well-ventilated. The place is well-maintained and clean, and has a "local brunch place" vibe which I liked. Parking: We lucked out and got parking at the available space by their lot, around 11am on a Saturday. There's also street parking available.

The servers were incredibly attentive from the moment we sat down--they brought us water right away, handed us menus, got our drinks first, and gave us plenty of time to look through the menu without feeling rushed. They were welcoming, friendly, and on top of everything. Our food came out fairly quickly and everything was fresh and delicious. The herb roasted potatoes were amazing, perfectly seasoned and cooked. The pancake was so fresh and fluffy. My omelette with Kahlúa pork was very good, full of flavor. My son's side of white rice and crispy bacon was cooked perfectly, and the corned beef hash was also delicious. We really appreciated the unlimited coffee and water refills, too. The overall experience was excellent--great service, great food, and a welcoming atmosphere. I would highly recommend this place and we'll definitely be back.

My fiance won a gift card actually 2 of them (from his coworker whom could not get a reservation secured), we knew we had to make the trip over before they officially close. We had multiple dishes, but staff made Kauai prawns and tomato miso black cod dishes on the house since they ran out the Hokkaido scallops. We ordered the short ribs, lobster appetizer, hamachi crudo and lastly sashimi moriawase to finish food palate. Lukki lemon dessert was great way to end to night. Ordered the Milk tea bouquet cocktail while my better half had water ( either way the food coma knock him out cold the rest of the night lol). To be honest, it was difficult to determine which dish was the best because the staff kept quality there despite it being busy every night since they announce the closure. Sashimi moriawase, fish was so fresh, reminded me of my time spent in Hokkaido and Sapporo. Short ribs was soft and rich in flavor. Both me and my fiance liked the lukki lemon dessert, like lemon meringue pie but broken down version. If you have a chance to dine here before closing and got a reservation, definitely will have a lovely dining experience and your stomach will be full by end of the night.
