Looking to buy lunch in the Moiilili area decided to try the pastele and chicken long rice. I enjoyed the pastele, It is served ala carte. Excellent taste , but not as firm as other places. The chicken long rice was delicious also. Glad I ordered these items. Will put it on my buy again list. Enjoy

Updating my review to share that they now have poke bowls! Still as fresh and ono as ever!

Still pissed from wasting my time and money at HELENA'S HAWAIIAN FOOD, I still needed to satisfy my Hawaiian food cravings. Fun fact? I used to work at Yama's Fishmarket when I was in high school and when they had a location at the Westgate Shopping center in Waipahu. Brian Yamamoto taught me the majority of the food items available at Yama's. From poke, to Lau Lau, to Pulehu Tako, and Pasteles, I STILL remember how they're supposed to taste, so after our visit to Doris Duke's Shangri-La Estate. We headed there for lunch. Luckily, we beat the lunch rush and ordered quickly- Hawaiian Plate with rice(Lau Lau, Kalua Pig, and Lomi Salmon) Side order Poi Pastele Ahi Shoyu Poke Ahi Limu Poke Okinawan Sweet Potato Haupia Pie Drinks *A NOTE ON POKE IN HAWAII-At the time of our visit, it was $33/pound for all types of AHI POKE, so if you are visiting on vacation and want a taste of FRESH LOCAL POKE, seek out the higher price per pound,(better taste and quality)otherwise, you're most likely eating cheaper gas treated tuna from Asia. While we were waiting for our lunch order, I asked if my former boss Brian was still around. Well, one of the workers had informed me that Brian had retired and sold the business along with all of his recipes! Also happy to report that aside from the runny poi, we killed everything we got and the food items are just as onolicious as I remember! This $90 lunch for two was worth every penny!

Yama's has been a go to lunch spot. They have good Hawaiian food, and poke bowls here. Great service too and parking is easy

I wanted to visit this place for a very, very long time, however, they close at 3 PM and hard for me to get there on a weekday. My friend used to own this place but now they are retired and thy sold it to another owner. Finally, this weekend, I went to visit. They have a small parking lot and it was full when I got there on a Saturday around lunch time, this place is busy, lots of people standing in line. I can see the workers working behind the counter, in the kitchen, they almost cannot keep up the demand. I went there for their poke. They offered many difference pokes, I like that they use fresh fish, not frozen. The poke is fresh, however, a bit too salty, may be they put too much salt. There also have lots of plate lunch at reasonable price. Check out the menu photos that I posted. They also sell drinks dessert and other small bite items. I will go back to try other dishes when I can.

I wanted to give Yama's a better score. At least a 4. I would say that usually the service is great and the food is really good. But today, we were the only ones in line at first - in fact there was no one in the store except us at first. The area inside is usually clean and orderly, as it was today. The young lady who helped us might have been new, since she didn't seem to know what was going on. We ordered four poke bowls (three with the exact same things in it and one different). It took her forever. There were at least 4 people who came in and ordered, even plate lunches, and were served and paid and left before she even brought our things to the counter. This being said, I can understand being new to a business and needing time and grace. No problem. But there were sooooo many other employees who didn't seem to want to help her. Even when she struggled with the cash register, the other girl was watching her struggle...come on. Help a sister out. On top of that.....our $15 poke bowls were so small it felt like there was 10 small pieces of fish in each serving. I spent over $60 for poke bowls then had to go get my kids something else to eat. I was sad. And hungry. And super disappointed. But I'll be back, to try again, because I know Yama's should be better.

Came looking for fresh opihi. Left with great advice and a terrific lau lau for lunch!!! Onolicious!!! Service is awesome here, very friendly and knowledgeable. Can tell Yama's is a hidden gem. Place is clean and welcoming. Going back to try more lau lau.

I'm so glad I went out of my way to check this place out for some authentic Hawaiian finds! This place is known for fresh poke however I had already had my poke fix somewhere else - I ended up trying their chicken lau lau and coconut haupia and this was one of the best meals I've had while visiting Hawai'i! When I went there was only one line for the cash register, whether you're ordering food or just taking some snacks or dessert from the fridge to go. The wait was kinda long but it's worth it. I took my food to-go and the chicken lau lau was still steamy. The chicken inside was really moist and falling off the bones, and it was all so flavorful! The haupia is amazing too, very indulgent and creamy.

Went to Yama's fish market and picked up the spicy ahi patties and egglant with tofu. Also picked up the haupia chocolate dessert, two frozen chicken lau laus. The eggplant with tofu was great, it came with a small container of mac salad, the rice was a bit dry and hard on the top, but i am not much of a rice eater. My husband liked the ahi patties and the haupia dessert is for later. The service was good and the market was clean and very organized. The poke looked amazing, but will try another time. I was happy to see that they open early and their menu selection is big.

Food is great here. Local spot with limited parking. Unfortunately the prices keep going up and pretty soon I won't be able to afford eating here as much as I like to. Oh, they didn't want to answer my phone call today for some reason. I guess you can't phone order? Not sure. Garlic chicken was $16 - ouch...

Yama's Fish Market is a small place but full of snacks, poke, hot dishes, and desserts. One way sign when you first walk into the store to help customers know the proper flow. :) Just looking and ended up getting a small snack. First time trying Squid Luau. I was surprised it was hot. Though I was pleasantly surprised. Wow, so much flavor! Creamy, coconutty, and tender pieces of squid. Haupia - sweet, flavorful. I'll be sure to visit again.

Yama's Fish Market Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Yama's Fish Market

Where's their fish caught? Is it coming in frozen or fresh? Line caught or big ships in owned by people not from Hawaii? Trying to stick to ethically sourced fish if I can help it. Thank you!

Their poke is always fresh. I'm not sure about the second part of your question, but my guess would be locally sourced.

Is there typically a wait when the store opens?

They open Wednesday -Sunday 9am to 5pm But they are on a short vacay until July 12 and will re-open July 13-Wednesday

One of my fondest childhood memories is going to Tamashiro Market with my dad…read more When we lived in Kalihi, this was our usual spot. And even after we moved, we would still drive out just to come here for the seafood. That's how special it was to us. The reason why he chose Tamashiro over other grocery stores was simple--it was quality and because of my Nanay (grandma). His mom purchased from here and made so many delicious dishes. He knew what to look for, and he trusted this place. For him, it wasn't just about buying food... it was about getting the best for his family. My dad isn't the type to say "I love you." He shows it. One of the biggest ways he showed love was through his cooking. Even after a long day on his feet cooking for others, he would come home and cook for us. That was his way of taking care of us. I loved coming here with him. It was a five-senses overload--the smell of fresh seafood, the sound of people talking story, the colors of fish on display. Back then when you were allowed to sample a grape or poke to make sure it was good before buying. But more than that, it was time with him. I still remember the excitement I felt when I saw the pink building with the huge crab. I thought back then was to look at everything but now I understand that it meant something more..... something special--time with my dad. It's with a sad heart that Tamishiro Market is now closed. Thank you, Tamashiro, for providing quality food and memories for so many years. You were more than a market--you were part of my childhood

They offer live Dungeness crab, Samoan crab, lobsters, snails, fish, clams, etc. I pass by here all the time but never looked inside. It wasn't till one day Mink was craving Dungeness crab and we couldn't find it anywhere. We looked at Costco (they had but they were already cleaned and all the good stuff was discarded), Richard's Meat Market and a few stalls in Chinatown. Fortunately I remembered this place and we walked there. Sure enough, they had tanks of live Dungeness crab. Customer service was friendly but a little slow. We were the only customers inside when we arrived but couldn't decide on how many to buy. In a blink of an eye, the place was packed and it took awhile to make our purchase. When we were finally helped again, we purchased two live Dungeness crabs. She gave us two huge ones! Cleaning was offered but my dad said it'll taste better to keep them alive till we're about to eat them. We politely declined the cleaning and paid. Bring cash! I was going to pay by credit card but they said cash. They probably don't want to pay processing fees. The crabs were still moving around on the way home and up till the moment we cleaned them. Seeing the crab cleaning in real life vs YouTube is totally different! It was a quick steam and we had our dinner ready. Don't worry, we also picked up take out from Thai Issan to accompany the crab. Mink made some homemade Thai seafood sauce. It was the perfect compliment to the plump and sweet crab meat. Yes, she made something in the kitchen! Thank social media or YouTube! Great discovery in Chinatown and we'll be back the next time we're in the mood for fresh seafood.

Odd, as nothing really needed to be "cooked" very long. I noticed immediately that a majority of the tables were disgusting and there are flies buzzing around. In any case, I still decided to order my food as "dine in." I did some shopping while I was waiting, and of course, while I was standing in line (almost 20 minutes later) my beeper went off. You cannot silence it, so I ended up abandoning my place in one of the three cash register lines. Since there are only 3 lines, they do not move quickly. This is prime time on a Saturday, mind you. I went to turn in the beeper and get my soup. The soup comes in a flaming box with a bowl shaped opening with feet, where the stainless seet bowl sits. Now, I get that the flaming box is meant to keep your soup hot... However, WE ARE IN HAWAII. The ambient temperature isn't going to cool down the soup dramatically. IN FACT, I HAVE BEEN SITTING HERE WAITING FOR THE FLAME TO GO OUT, BECAUSE MY SOUP IS TOO HOT TO EAT. Additionally, because the bowl sits on feet, the beef bones weight keeps spilling the soup off one end. The soup is delicious, but this is the stupidest execution and presentation of something meant to be delicious and simple. Also, if the bowl is too hot to hold and drink from... soup spoons would be awesome. ‍

The staff was super nice about it and was able to accommodate us, with only a small request that we be out by 8pm since there was another big party with a reservation coming in. Absolutely reasonable. They sat us right away at three large tables, which gave us plenty of space for food and didn't force us to sit super close together. Menus, waters, plates, napkins, and forks were all brought out immediately, and our waiter was quick to take our order. We started with the prix fixe menu for 8-10 guests and were going to add other items à la carte, but a handful of our group accidentally went to the other Side Street location (make sure your group is all on the same page), so what we ordered ended up being more than enough. We left stuffed and with 5 boxes of food still. Edamame was nice and steamy, and large enough to easily pop the beans out with your mouth. Wish there was a bit more salt though. The farmer's salad had everything going on from citrusy to salty to crispy. Avocado had a little bit of oxidation but the capers, dressing and potato curls provided plenty of reasons to overlook it. The fried rice came in a hefty portion, with sizable pieces of bacon and sausage. The chicken I didn't realize was boneless based on the shape of the deep fry, but it was nice to freely bite into it without worrying about hitting anything with my teeth. Probably a bit too much on fried bits but still good. Pork chops had a better meat to crisp ratio in my opinion, as well as juiciness. They even came with ketchup on the side, which I love as a pairing but don't see much of at restaurants. My favorite meat item was definitely the sizzling boneless kalbi. The presentation on the sizzling plate with a side of kimchi was spectacular, and the meat was full of flavor. We also ordered yakisoba, which wasn't part of the prix fixe. Tasted good but nothing past standard expectations. We let the waiter know we had a 30th birthday at the table, and they brought a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream with a candle, and did a decent job getting the whole room to participate in the singing. It could also be the type of crowd this place attracts, since it seemed that everyone was so friendly and approachable. Thanks to the quick and consistent service, we were out in a little over an hour with no complaints.
