Very sad this market closed, but glad we got to try it before they did. We got the spicy tuna and the ginger marlin. The marlin surprised us with the flavor and texture of the fish. Both flavors were wonderful as well as the staff inside he market. Such good quality!

I can't believe I'm only coming here when they are about to close. The fish quality here is fantastic. The staff is also so wonderful. If you're in Oahu please come here in their final days.

Ahi sperm (shirako). Only place I know that sells fresh shirako. $5.95/lb. 1/22/26.

HAPPY TRAILS!!! March 31, 2026 - Honolulu Star Advertiser Headline: "Tamashiro Market to close April 30 after 80 years!" KHON2 NEWS FEATURED STORY: Cyrus Tamashiro: "Guy and I are getting older and we decided that it is time for us to retire. As much as we would like to continue to serve the public, which we have been doing for many, many years; I think, it is probably time for us to slow down now and take it easy. Thank you! Thank you to all of our customers for many years of loyal patronage. We did our best to provide you with the best that the ocean has to offer and we really appreciate the so many great memories that we have. We're going to miss you." Guy Tamashiro: "Yup! Yup! And it's our turn to go fishing!" The Tamashiro Market story is a biography of what makes America so special. In 1913, at the age of fourteen, Chogen Tamashiro emigrated from Okinawa to work on a sugar plantation on the Island of Hawaii. Some years later, Chogen and his wife Iris Yoshiko, purchased or leased land from the plantation and started farming and raising pigs. In 1941, they opened a farm store in Hilo on Kamehameha Avenue. After the April 1, 1946 tsunami devastated Hilo and the family's market, Chogen made in 1947, the courageous decision to relocate to Honolulu and open a small neighborhood market, in a modest wooden building, on the corner of North King and Palama. In 1954, eldest son Walter convinced his father to transform the market into a fresh fish, crab and seafood market and that new focus would lead to Tamashiro Market becoming known as "Home of the Finest Seafoods" in Honolulu, for generations. In 1962, Walter Tamashiro decided that to better serve his customers, he would tear down the original, two story, wood building and build the three story, concrete and CMU structure we see today. He strategically painted the building pink, like the two distinct pink buildings in Hawaii at the time, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and Tripler Hospital. On a trip to Japan, his brother Johnny, stumbled upon a giant red crab facsimile and excitedly shipped it to Walter. With the installation of the eye-catching, monster red crab, high on the corner of the building, Tamashiro Market was collectively celebrated as an iconic seafood market. For me, the news of Tamashiro Market's closing marks the end of the shopping for fresh fish experience for kama'aina's. I cannot think of any other place that provides the best quality fresh fish, at the most reasonable price; that is conveniently located, is clean and a place where you can touch, smell and hand select the fish you want; and have it cleaned and wrapped by skilled, accommodating fish cutters, as you're standing there watching. Tamashiro Market offers a diverse selection of much sought after local seafood by kama'aina's; not available at supermarkets, poke shops, Chinatown and Asian markets. Yes, there will be an abundance of salmon, ahi, farm raised tilapia, poke, clam and oysters at supermarkets but finding a reliable place to buy fresh papio, kumu, onaga, mahimahi, akule, kala, palani, kole, opihi, manini, menpachi, oio, opelu, opakapaka, uhu, ehu, moana, Samoan crab and fresh fish parts like ahi roe, shirako; ahi, aku and hamachi bone; ahi, aku and butterfish head, will not be easy. On one hand, I am happy that third generation, Guy and Cyrus Tamashiro are able to retire and enjoy the fruits of their family's hard work and success, after so many decades selling the freshest and finest seafoods, at the best possible price to kama'aina's. They deserve to enjoy this next phase of their lives and I wish them many, many healthy and happy years, enjoying a more relaxing and leisurely lifestyle. It's the reward most American's look forward too, after years of hard and stressful work. We all accept that It is not easy to run a business for over seventy five years. For me, I will personally miss being graciously greeted by Cyrus, when he opens the doors of his market at 8:00 in the morning. I cannot express how deeply grateful I am to the Tamashiro's for providing me, my family and friends and all of Honolulu with the finest seafoods and friendly customer service and will forever remember the wonderful memories of how their fresh seafoods made dinners, special occasions, Christmas and New Year's celebrations extraordinary. The ocean's bounty I purchased at Tamashiro Market sparkled like diamonds at get togethers because of their quality and freshness. All of us are going to miss Tamashiro Market because they were part of our family life, in our kitchen. Uku mahalo's and double shaka to the past and present Tamashiro family and your generations of dedicated employees. One last thing: When the two of you are each holding a can of beer, shoreline fishing, and catch nothing but ballon fish, hinalea and humuhumu; I think you will realize that the best place to catch the best quality fish for eating in Honolulu was at Tamashiro Market.

This was my first time at this market although I've heard of this establishment and the quality of its poke and food offerings for a while. Since I was there around 10/11 am, the options were slim. I didnt have time to wait for the replenishment due to my upcoming flight. I chose what was left and had no regrets. Both options were prepared with fresh ingredients and pricey. The octopus was slightly salty but delicious. The ahi poke with crab was the star of the show (*in my Latasha Lee voice*). That was the best poke I've had in a long time. I am sad to know that this establishment will be closing soon but in the meantime I highly recommend supporting this small business yesterday. Thank me by enjoying the ahi poke with crab.

if there's one poke place you need to visit in honolulu, PLEASE let it be this one. even if you're carless and staying in waikiki, i promise the trip out of the city is SOOOO WORTH IT! (like if you go and think it sucks i will genuinely pay for your detour.) like is foodland good? yes. but is tamashiro better AND cheaper? also yes. the ambiance is super no frills very local. but guys. it's a literal fish market. and the people working there are all SO NICE. when we were ordering our poke bowls, the guy working the poke counter let us sample like a bajillion different things and was so chill the whole time. ok onto the poke: holy shit everything's good. genuinely everything's good you will not go wrong with any order. if you want a classic flavor, the spicy ahi or the ahi onion are both good picks (onion's apparently their most popular and uses the highest quality ahi they have). but if you're interested in trying something new, would highly recommend the ahi with creamy crab sauce, the nairagi (striped marlin) ginger, or the tako (octopus) manako. pro tip: get a poke bowl with one of your topping choices and then get a 1/4 pound of another type of poke if you want more variety! please please please try this place it's genuinely the best poke i've had in my entire life.

Delicious poke in a very no-frills supermarket! Tamashiro Market is a very small unassuming supermarket, and in the back of the store, you can order poke by the pound or poke bowls. We tried da real kine poke which had crab, scallop, and shrimp. It was award winning and so delicious! The bowls themselves are simple and no-frills with a few toppings. But the whole bowl is delicious! The poke is so flavorful and fresh, and the rice was the perfect texture and flavor! This spot was so good, I'd really like to come back to try their other poke! There isn't anywhere to eat here though, so it's definitely a place for people to pick up bowls to go.

    Svetlana S.

Oh yeah, this is where we leave a lot of green cash every time we visit. I find it to be the best quality fish in town and splurge on ahi toro without any regrets. Premium grade sushi and sashimi is also there for you. A lot of folks prefer the poke section, which has so many options and competetive pricing. We have not purchased whole fish there, since we prefer to stay with local catch only (often this is all kinds of tuna), but there is no lack of choice in this section either. The service is fast and friendly, you can tell the workers love what they do as well. There is no ambiance to rate (even though Yelp wants you to : ) it is a fish shop - it smels of fish and it serves exactly its purpose!

    Opihi (Limpet)
    Melinda K.

I got my first taste of fresh Opihi and poke bowls once I landed in Honolulu from San Jose. This was my first Hawaiian poke I had ever had in my life, being born and raised here, since none of my family members were fond of raw seafood. They had a wide variety of seafood options to choose from, including Spicy Ahi, Limu Ahi, Tako (Octopus), Scallops, Squid, and more. They even have prepackaged cooked fish ready to eat. For now, I'm only here for their unique poke by the pound. I went on a poke haul with Spicy Ahi, Limu Ahi with Ogo Seaweed, Taegu (Korean-marinated codfish), Sweet Onion Ahi Poke, Opihi (Limpet), Tako, and a Kulolo (Taro Coconut Milk pudding) for dessert. Everything was still fresh in the container when I drove back to my hotel in Waikiki. It was heaven for me because it had been a decade since I had fresh Hawaiian-style poke instead of the salmon poke bowls with edamame served on the Mainland. Friendly service. It looked small on the outside, but packed with a lot of fresh seafood, some produce, and local snacks like an Asian family-owned supermarket. They close early at 4 pm and have limited parking in front, so you have to park on the street near the residential area. Highly recommend coming here for your first taste of opihi and poke cravings.

Tamashiro's is still my go to place for poke and fresh fish! It's conveniently located in town, has a small parking lot in front, with additional parking at the church across the street. The staff is always so friendly and helpful, which I really appreciate! Prices are a bit pricey compared to some other places, but it's good quality and worth it in my eyes. The negative for this place is it's limited hours post-covid pandemic. I believe they were having difficulty w/ staffing... Currently, they're open till 1PM most of the week, 4PM Fridays and Saturdays, and closed Mondays. I used to stop after work at 2-3 days a week, but with the earlier hours, I can only go on days off or the weekend. Been to the pros, Tamashiro's has got a bunch of selections for fresh poke, fish slabs or filets, and a variety of other seafood, both fresh and frozen. If you go earlier or midday, you can typically find ready to eat cooked options asl well. They also often have staples such as luau leaves, other veggies, and some seasonal fruits. No matter how you slice it, it's a great place you should try, and then frequent!

Good old Tamashiro Market!!! Growing up as a kid I remember all the seafood and fish. 50 years later I still feel like a kid looking at all the fresh seafood. Service is awesome. It's a fish market, but, it's clean. Went looking for fresh opihi from a recommendation from Yama's. Found it!!! Amazed to see the large bags of fresh limu seaweed too. And the crab still up there!!!

    Rex C.

Finally made it to Tamashiro after hearing about it for so long, and I'm really glad I did. The vibe when you walk in is super chill and welcoming -- nothing fancy, just local and laid-back, which I appreciated. A friend recommended I try the Lomi Oio, which is definitely one of those "local favorites" thats not everyone might be used to. It's got that unique, soft texture -- definitely an acquired taste, but I'm glad I gave it a shot. We also ordered the king crab (so fresh!) and "Da Real Kine" poke -- turns out it actually won Poke Fest in 2020, and yeah, it lives up to the hype. What stood out the most was the service. Super fast, and the staff actually listens. If you're not sure about something, they'll offer you a sample, no problem. That kind of attention makes a big difference. I'll be back for sure.

Overall a great spot for fresh fish and a quick bite. The squid was a bit salty and I wish my shoyu tuna had more tuna than onions but the freshness cannot be denied. I will always choose to visit a fish market rather than a restaurant for poke so this will continue to be a staple spot.

Crab like, ginger, ahi onion, spicy tuna, and imitation crab poke.

    Do they have fresh amaebi?

No I haven't seen any fresh shrimp there

Do you ever get live crabs? Blue crabs specifically?

Yes, we do get live blue crabs in! The supply is very inconsistent, nothing we can count on…I only know the day before it’s supposed to arrive.

Do you have live whole lobster?

    Yes, live Maine lobsters!

    Do they sell mud crab?

    Yes, but rarely available

    Do they sell aku bones?

    Do they sell fresh sardines?

I have never seen fresh sardines sold here.

    Do they have dried Aku?

I think it depends on supply, but I have seen them carry it. Usually located on the left side of the poke section. They don't always answer the phone, but it might be good to call and check before you go.

Do they sell taro leaves to make laulau?

They often do, but you typically have to call or check ahead cause they don't always have it in.

Do they sell salted black cod?

    No, I haven't seen that

Do they have cold water Maine lobsters?

They do bring them in from time to time. You should call and ask.

Can you still purchase limu by itself at Tamashiro Market?

Yes, though not always available. I would suggest calling ahead before going down.

Does anyone know the Updated Prices for Ahi?

Ahi poke currently runs around $18-$20+ per pound, which means buying slabs is in that arena too, unless a higher grade. I think if they have tombo ahi, it's often closer to $14-$16 per pound. Overall their prices vary based on the quality, but… Read more

I will return again when I'm running low on stuff. The prices aren't terrible but not that inexpensive either. You can find some bargain vegetables that aren't pretty but for $1 a piece it's good if you're using them up that day. I say try and go around and see what you can find. Plenty of convenient parking. We were the only customers inside when we arrived but couldn't decide on how many to buy. In a blink of an eye, the place was packed and it took awhile to make our purchase. Seeing the crab cleaning in real life vs YouTube is totally different! It was a quick steam and we had our dinner ready. Don't worry, we also picked up take out from Thai Issan to accompany the crab. The restaurant was pretty cute both outside and inside, and I could tell it draws a good crowd for football games, which is a plus. For the poke bowls, we got the Spicy Shoyu Ahi, Furikake Salmon, and Ultimate. Overall, they were pretty good and decent bowls. I liked that there was a condiment bar at the end to add any toppings you wanted. The fish was fresh and well seasoned, with no fishiness at all. I just wished there was a bit more white onion for crunch, but it was good regardless. The Fish and Chips were really good. The fish was super crispy, the meat was firm, and the fries were nicely fried. The tartar sauce or maybe more of a lemony aioli, was the star. It wasn't your usual tartar sauce; it had a homemade lemony sweetness that made it delicious. My only complaint was that the batter came off the fish pretty easily, which made it a bit tricky to eat at times.
