Who knew? By day, J-Shop is a retail store selling imported fresh produce, meats and fish from Japan (tip- Thursdays are fresh fish delivery day) By night- an Izakaya serving great 'FRESH" food made upon order. And the price? Well, it's priced right! Seats about 12 people TOTAL. I might be shooting myself in the foot by revealing what I consider to be a great kept secret! OR. I must have been living under a rock NOT to have known about this place. (OK, I've been to the market during the day but never knew about the night time activities). I will caution the food takes time to get prepared so be on top of your order or it may get lost in the shuffle (or lost in sake) It's BYOB and like other izakaya with BYOB policy; be sure you bring some adult beverage for the chef and his workers. Sashimi Omakase? The best!

I have gone past this place many times when going down Young Street and have not tried their food. We decided to go and try them out for old times sake. We made the reservation on Open Table pretty easily. There is sushi bar seating and a few tables - were opted for a table since we tend to get many dishes and share. The staff was very attentive and helped explain their dishes we inquired about well. We opted for a little of everything for our first visit. California Roll: 7/10. Fresh real Crab and avocado. The dish is tiny but packs a nice punch in flavor. Assorted Tempura: 8/10. 3 Shrimp, 1 Whitefish, 1 carrot, 1 eggplant, 1 kabocha, and 1 onion. Lightly fried without a strong oily texture and not too much batter. Dashimaki Tamago: 7/10. It takes a little while for the dish to cook, so order early. The dashi-taste is very light so you get a more egg taste each bite. The pieces are very generous and you don't need too much Shoyu to pair. Misoyaki Butterfish: 9/10. While, I may have liked this particular butterfish for it's light miso flavor, many others would prefer a stronger miso taste. It is a very very light miso flavor and not too charred outside to give it a nice and juicy body. The skin is nice and crispy as well. Chutoro Sashimi: 10/10. The pieces are not skinny, the fish itself is good, and the presentation is nice and simple with the right compliments. With 6 pieces per order, this is quite good and we considered getting a 2nd order. Simmered Pumpkin: 6/10. Both myself and my guest commented that it had a very light flavor but was nicely simmered and not too tough to bite. I liked that it was served cold but my guest would have wanted it warm. Simmered Eggplant: 7/10. Not too sweet and the right amount of savory. Cooked well and very light to eat. Lotus root: 9/10. Infound this side dish to be quite good as the lotus root is cooked but still had a slight crisp to it. My guest ended up ordering 3 portions take out for home. This was a great first experience and we have a better idea of what to go for. Also, it is BYOB so bring your own favorites.

Up to today, I never knew this place existed. I just happened to stumble upon J-Shop during my lunch break where I needed to do a quick work errand across the street at the One Kalakaua Senior Living. The parking at One Kalakaua was full, but I wasn't able park due to no parking space available so I literally pulled up on the parking lot across the street, which happens to be J-Shop's parking lot. I didn't want to just park and walk across the street, so I entered J-Shop to at least buy something and to my surprise, it was a small and cute Japanese mom and pop grocery store. During my quick visit, I noticed that they sold a variety of Japanese snacks and Japanese goods and a variety of premade sushi. I wish I could have roamed around longer, but I'll definitely make my way back if I ever need to do a work errand at One Kalakaua ever again. Because I was parked in their parking lot and I wanted to cross the street to One Kalakaua, I did end up buying my lunch there. I ended up getting a tekka maki and a chilled green tea. I went to pay the nice lady and I did end up asking her if it was ok for me to park my car and walk across the street real quick to do my errand. She was so nice and understanding and told me that because I was their customer, it was ok for me to park there. It was so nice of her and I'd totally understand as well if she told me no. Super grateful! Once I finished my errand, I went back in to thank the lady once again for the kind gesture. Once I got back to my car, I did end up eating the tekka sushi on my drive back to work. It was so fresh and I can tell it was made that day. When I in the store, I did notice that they had a sushi bar on one side of the building and that would make sense to why their maki was so fresh tasting. I'm sure they get their fish in fresh daily. Definitely would love to try their food one day.

Quaint shop located near One Kalakaua Avenue and Young Street. Free parking in its lot. Clean and organized store containing items imported from Japan and more. You can find snacks, household items, magazines, fresh made bentos and so much more here. Service is exceptional and friendly. Japanese language is generally spoken here. Great fresh sushi, sashimi, donburi style meals, and bentos made here. The oden is very natural taste. No added shoyu or sugar, so don't expect the sweet type or heavy flavors here. The oyako (chicken and egg) donburi is the same. I think it's much healthier, but my Dad wanted more "taste" and gravy. His favorite is still at Ojisan's. Ambiance: 3.5/5 stars Service: 5/5 stars Food: 3.5/5 stars. Sushi is 4/5 stars.

This was a charming little place a little bit off the beaten path. Although there is only one chef, the place is sized accordingly so service was reasonably fast. The two waitresses were also on top of everything from the moment that we walked in to the moment that we left. We ended up getting the sashimi for three, plus a few other items that seemed interesting to us, and everything was exceptional. There are plenty of photos of the platter so I won't elaborate too much on there except to say that the platter of uni is real! One thing that I loved was that after we were done with the mackerel and the shrimp, they offered to deep fry the bones and the shrimp heads. The frying takes a while (maybe 10 minutes), but they were a delight to eat. If you haven't tried fried fish bones before, they don't taste fishy at all. Best I can describe it as is like unusually thick chips - hot, crunchy, salty. To round out the meal, we ordered some other items a la carte. The octopus karage was great, as was the other sushi. The "white fish" roll was especially good. There is some sort of seasoning that they added to the roll that we loved, so much so that we ordered a couple more while waiting for our fish bones. To finish the meal, we ordered three pieces of tomago. Every great sushi place I've been to has their own take on tomago, and J-Shop was no exception. The tomago was sort of split along one of the seams that form when cooking, and then filled with a rice mixture. My memory was that it was more savory rather than sweet. A word on pricing, you might try to stick with anything that's labelled as a special, or that comes in one of their sets or combos. Ordering the nigiri a la carte was a bit more expensive than I was expecting relative to the sashimi platter that we ordered. One of the other tables that seemed to have some regulars brought the chef a nice bottle of alcohol as a gift. I'm sure it's not expected, but just thought I'd mention it. For many people, this is not just another sushi place, but a part of a local community. All in all, this is a place that I will make sure to visit again the next time I'm on Oahu.

Update on J-Shop I haven't been here for awhile so I decided to stop by for lunch . I was craving for Donburi so I ordered their pork katsu Donburi and also their Salmon Donburi. The Salmon Donburi is very fresh over sushi rice and the price is very good @ $14.95. Also the Katsu Donburi is made to order so it's nice and hot . They do sell pre-made bento as along with a special of the day . Today special on Saturday was tempura bento and Mabo egg plant . This small Japanese grocery store sell lots of things straight from Japan . Especially A5 Wagyu beef look at my pic maybe one day I'll buy a slab like that and just enjoy lol!! Support local

I guess I have been living under a rock... I didn't know this place existed but glad someone else knew. They have a sushi counter next to a somewhat grocery store. They are BYOB. ala carte style ordering, fish was fresh. Small and intimate place. Dining has a time limit.

Super cool restaurant inside a Japanese grocery store!! The fish was super fresh, everything tasted amazing. Lots of free parking and it's BYOB!!

This is an easy 5-star review because J-Shop offers high-quality, fresh, and authentic sushi at an affordable price. They have a joint grocery store selling seasonal fish and a restaurant (by reservation only). Food - Fresh fish that melts in your mouth - Generous fish-to-rice ratio - The sushi nigiri and sashimi omakase are our personal favorites, and they always include the best cuts of tuna, salmon, yellowtail, scallop, and uni. They are consistently really good, and every time, the fish is delicious, and the rice is cooked to perfection (no one wants mushy cold rice... you want that fluffy, sticky texture with sweet yet tangy flavor). Drinks - BYOB, and they offer cups for your sake, wine, and ice buckets to chill the wine. At no extra cost. Plus, the waitresses and chef are so nice and welcoming. Always checking on us and pouring us complimentary hot tea.

Mom's happy place... We are blessed to have many places to find our unique cultural favorites and J-Shop is no different finding it's own niche to make it special in it's own way. Located slightly hidden on Young Street right across the One Kalakaua it's easily missed if you're heading in the Ewa direction as once you cross Kalakaua Avenue it will be on your immediate left and it has a lot of parking to make your shopping experience easy. Yes they have a lot of high end items not found in many places are are probably understood and appreciated by a small group of folks...I am certainly not one of them, not because it's expensive but I don't have that level of taste buds to know the difference. They do have a great selection of fresh and frozen items as well and mom are mostly forzen seafood and a specific pickled veggies she loved and on this visit I literally almost grabbed them all as the last time I got several and she kept complaining she's out and needed more lol!! Small yet specific amount of snacks, sauces and even bentos if you go just before closing the prices do drop and yes the selection are slim picking but a great price for dinner regardless is a great option though on this visit they seem to have closed off the dining area for a private function so I didn't get a chance to see much of it and kept it simple with mom's goods. Thank you!

Such a cute little place. We came for the omakase, and weren't disappointed. Location: unassuming Japanese market. Ample parking. Service: We were the only patrons there and were well taken care of. Service was friendly, attentive, and we felt the chefs hospitality despite the language barrier. He even put on a little music video for us to enjoy! Food: Fresh, simple, and delicious. The omakase was great for the price (in comparison to the mainland). The negitoro was also delicious and had its signature umami rich taste. You'd never guess that there was a sushi spot this good inside a supermarket. Definitely a hidden gem.

    Deep fried shrimp head

We love the experience. Very fresh sashimi. Omakase sashimi is a must. Fresh fish available every day. Sashimi the whole fish than deep fried the bone. Fantastic.

I always come here "just to look," but end up with a gigantic, branded reusable bag filled to the brim with imported Asian snacks. Many Chinese products, but also Korean, Japanese, Thai, etc. Snacks range from exotic chip flavors to candies and sodas. Further back you'll find more substantial instant noodle meals. The Chinese ones are actually great and are way more complex ingredients-wise than your standard instant noodle. Also in the back are Chinese cooking ingredients such as sauces and dry goods, but my favorite is the super thick, wide glass noodles that I use for hot pot. There's also a small section with Asian toiletry products that I've personally never tried. I must say it feels like there is less variety of items since they moved locations. Some snacks are repeated in different spots on the shelves to make it look like there's more variety. My favorite latiao that I used to get at their old location is no longer available. :( I'll keep coming back regularly because they're always getting new items in stock.

Don Quixote? The titular protagonist of Miguel de Cervantes' 17th-century Spanish novel, often considered the first modern novel? No, not him. Side-quest unlocked: Go to Don Quijote to looks at Trader Joe's-like bags and peruse affordable macadamia nuts. Imagine if a Japanese convenience store, Costco, Walmart, Japanese pop culture, and a late-night snack gremlin all moved into one building and decided to co-habilitate. That's Don Quijote, or as locals lovingly know it: Donki. Don Quijote is Japanese discount megastore in Honolulu where you walk in for one bottle of water and somehow leave an hour later with Japanese cheesecake, body wash, a rice cooker, novelty socks, a plush penguin, Spam musubi, an ankle brace, and at least one item that made you say, "Well, I've never seen that before." Every aisle is an adventure. It's part grocery store, part pharmacy, part souvenir shop, part beauty supply, part snack paradise, and part "why are they selling this and why do I suddenly need it?" The shelves are packed to the ceiling, the signage is loud, the deals are good, and the whole place feels like a treasure hunt designed by someone who drank three Red Bull Kyoho Grapes and said, "More products! More fun! No empty shelf space!" The Honolulu location is also gloriously open 24 hours, which means it serves a very specific and beautiful type of chaos: jet-lagged tourists like myself, night owls craving Japanese curry, and people making questionable but spiritually necessary 1:11 a.m. purchases. TL;DR, Don Quijote is less of a store and more of an experience. A slightly overwhelming and delightfully unhinged retail adventure.

The Pearl Kai location I frequent the most has a variety of snacks from all over the world, and the workers there gave me some samples to try. I took my friend there to shop and they also gave her samples. My only problem is I buy too many yummy snacks! Lol! I always leave with a box! Hahaa. Please check them out. I think this location also has a beverage drink place inside now. Yum yum for my tum tum!

They also have a small fridge filled with homemade Laos items like fermented pork sausage, jeow bong, etc. The workers are so friendly here, easily making conversation with us and the regulars here. Worth stopping by!

I've been here a few times and each time I come in , the aunty behind the register and the other aunty who hangs out there (not sure if she just hangs out there or works there) but those 2 have ALWAYS been so helpful in finding and suggesting ingredients that I need. If they didn't have it, they always had another place in mind where I might find it. Once I was looking for fresh wide noodles to make Pad Kee Maw ..they didn't have but they suggested the restaurant on the corner had! They assured they sold the noodles plain in plastic bags..and yes, the restaurant sold the noodles! Cheap too! Today's visit I walked in and told them I going to make Tripe Laab.. the aunty behind the register pointed it out and the other aunty told me to follow her ..not only did they show me, but explained what it does and other alternatives that were available just in case the more specific ones weren't available. There was another customer in there at the same time..I'm assuming she was a regular ..she looked at what I put down on the counter ..started talking in Thai to the worker....she then turned and looked at me and already knew what I was going to make .. she ended up telling me to put back when I got and instead told me to follow her and showed me the "homemade better version" of what I first got.. I was so impressed at the help even by a random person who didn't even work there! I'm definately looking forward to making Tripe Laab this long weekend. Fur future Thai/Lao dishes, I will definately be coming back here for the items I need. A must store for Thai/Lao and SE Asian ingredients!

My family has been shopping this market as at one point in time, there weren't a lot of Korean grocery options. (Our mom is Korean btw.) I love that they mix goods sourced from Korea as well as local produce! Also, their prepared foods are tough to beat and their food counters inside are amazing! Check online for weekly sales and hours of operation for the different locations. They also have social media which features new/trendy food and product! So easy, convenient, and nostalgic! Forever a Palama Supermarket stan.

I've been here many times, and there are a few items I come here for - sliced beef for shabu, their kimchi, their banchan like mushroom and tripe are delicious. I also like their snacks as well, also the instant noodles. Parking can be a little crazy as the lot is tight and many cars come in and out, but there's also upstairs parking up the ramp if you really need it. On the left side of the parking lot is a locksmith / key guy. He can copy any key you need, even if it's the bigger key that Home Depot can't work on. Also, there's a little food court inside. Don't forget to order some fried chicken at Von's too, and check out the other food stalls as well! For these many reasons, I like to go to Palama market 2-3 times a month.
