I like a hole in the wall, but this market is a hot mess. I don't understand the high rating. The shelves are way too close together and there is no logical order. Glass jars are stacked high. There is food on the floor. The clerks, while friendly, don't know where stuff is. My daughter asked for canned garbanzo beans and they said they didn't have them, but they did (I found them). They couldn't find a mix that we asked for, but we later did. I was looking for fresh naan, but they only had frozen. So, I'm guessing they have the corner on Indian ingredients in Honolulu. The positive is that they carry a lot of the necessities for Indian cooking. They staff is friendly and they have a private parking lot. read more

We pass by this India Market everyday going to work and home. My daughter loves cooking and loves ethnic foods. She told me one day let's go check it out and we finally did. India Market is a one stop shop for all your South Asian food needs. Located at the corner of Beretania and Isenberg, they have free dedicated parking right outside. Entrance is in the rear, but it's hard to miss from the front while driving by. Inside the entrance you'll find the frozen and refrigerated selections. Dry goods, cans, jars, etc. are throughout the store with bulk rice and other items at the far back. Snacks are around the cash register, with beauty products behind. This is not just Indian foods but groceries from all around that part of the world. You'll find sauces, curries, canned vegetables, jarred/pickled items, and snacks. Their chocolate selection ranges from India to New Zealand; so many different companies and types. Prices seem reasonable or on par with items at big grocery stores, but the brands and selection here are much more extensive. One highlight - I went in to buy homemade samosas one day but she had completely sold out. I was told most days shortly after lunch they are gone for the day, but calling in to preorder is welcome. Another week I did that, calling in the morning and choosing a pickup time. This is great option for events as they're easy to eat, come with sauce, and only cost $1.50/each. They are some of the best I've had with flaky outsides and soft insides of potato/pea with curry. This place is located at the top corner of Moiliili Park on Beretania and Isenberg. I just noticed it when I was going to McCully Bike. Apparently they have been in business for 20 years but used to be located down the block on King St. They do have a small parking lot but there also is parking along the park. They have all kinds of Indian groceries and the prices are pretty reasonable, especially when you consider you are in Hawaii. Generally it is hard to find good Indian food in Hawaii so it helps to have a place like this in a convenient location. Check them out. read more

Lately I've been craving Indian cuisine and came here to find black mustard seeds and fresh curry leaves, which I couldn't find in other stores, for a tofu curry recipe. The aisles are narrow with shelves stocked full of aromatic spices you don't often find elsewhere such as fenugreek and cardamom pods. Jars of exotic premade sauces and fancy dips sit alongside packages of snacks (spiced chickpeas), biscuits, sweets and more. A fridge and freezer section feature pre-made packaged food. Here you'll also find ghee, tahini and basmati rice. Do check out the fresh made samosas ($1.50), a crispy pocket filled with curried potato and peas. I've come here, too, for premade spice mixes to make Chana masala and tikka masala. Take advantage of free parking in a private lot and avoid street parking in the neighborhood if you can. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place considering the last couple visits I had. The first two times I was able to try their fresh samosas and even called ahead to make sure I could order some the second visit. The older lady who owns the place was always nice to me. The samosas are good, but they give a side of sweet chili which is not traditional. Would be nice to come with some chutney instead. However, the last few times I visited, a younger female (maybe daughter?) was working and was quite unkind/rude to me. I tried calling ahead (there is a sign that says to call ahead to order samosas) and she just kept telling me no we can't do that and would abruptly hang up the phone. This happened 4 times in a row and unfortunately probably won't be returning again. A shame, since I enjoyed getting samosas and shopping here. Other cons: -Kind of overwhelming considering how much stuff they have in here. -overpriced for some items -Aisles are disorganized and might take you some time to find things. Hello this is a good grocery store for Indian and middle eastern food and goodies. The parking is free and on the front of the building. However, the prices are so expensive and the quality is not that good to price it that way. Sometimes the product is expired so pay attention to the dates or labels . Tall shelves filled with wondrous spices, canned fruits and vegetables, condiments, snacks and candies forces you to crane your neck upwards as you move slowly from each 3-foot section to the next. The product assortment includes a nice cross-section of Indian and Nepalese food items. Make a deliberate stop at the rice section - who knew of all the strains available to choose from?! This was a real find in Honolulu. Very cute store with many different Indian items. I need some ingredients for a recipe and thankfully this place was on the way home. Parking was horrible when I got there and I had to do a 5 point reverse just to get into the only stall while there was a car parked right outside the door. They had some fresh fried samosas that were so delicious! The only thing i found an issue with the expiration date on the paneer cheese was past it's sell by date. Service was good. Was visiting Oahu from Maui and was so happy to find an Indian grocery store! We raided it for everything we needed to take back as we don't have one on our island. There is a simple parking lot and easy access to the store. They are packed with groceries! Lots of tight aisles, fridge, and frozen products, as well as produce and freshly cooked food. I always like to check out the India Market to see what they have. They have unique spices that you may not find in the regular grocery stores and it's fairly reasonable priced. I see many customers buy the white or wheat naan bread in the freezer. I usually like to buy the frozen parantha bread which is buttery when pan fried until it's puffed and golden brown. It has shortening inside so you do not have to add any oil in the pan for frying.. As frozen, it's thin and is separated by a plastic wrap so it's easy to separate them when frozen. It's best to to take it out straight out the freezer to the frying pan. Do not let it defrost. It's such a treat to have and it's delicious even if it's plain! I got my mom and friends hooked on it! They always have hot fried samosa on hand that you can buy on the go for $1.50 ea. It's a vegetarian samosa w/ potatoes and other ingredients. I bought them many times and it's a delicious snack! You can always find products from India such as beauty products, soaps, facial products, vitamins, dvds, candies, and snacks. There are also food products and prepared package mix to help make some of the Indian dishes. They even have chutney in the bottles. One of friend drinks a lot of tea daily but particularly the green tea! He likes the gun smoked green tea from here. Just to know that most of the tea are loose tea leaves in a box or a tin can. The India Market is on the first floor of a two story building on the corner of Isenburg and Beretania St across from the Moilili Neighborhood Park. They have a small parking lot which is nice but it can be filled at times. It's a better location from where they were which is now I believed to be Frost City. Thanks to my co-worker, I discovered India Market! They carry a large selection of Indian food - the store is packed with products! It's super cozy inside and you can spend quite a bit of time looking through their large selection of spices and frozen foods if you're unfamiliar with the cuisine (like myself). You can find specialty spices and blends that may be difficult to find in other grocery stores. The items that I purchased were priced lower than online stores and I enjoyed browsing because I discovered that they carried pre-mixed spices for specific dishes - how convenient! The free parking lot and store entrance are off Isenberg Street but be aware that parking can be tight. There's also street parking as an option. I'm so excited to try my hand at a butter chicken recipe with basmati rice and naan. I'll definitely return to India Market to try their ready-made samosas! read more

I am so thrilled to have found this place! I'm from California, but I've never been to a Mediterranean/ Southeast Asian type of specialty food store. As soon as we stepped in, I was blown away! There is so much variety even among similar products. So you can keep coming back to try different brands while you restock your favorites. The store was well stocked and made excellent use of the space they had, while also being very tidy. Make sure to take your time surveying these aisles, they're full of all sorts of interesting and tasty looking items. They also sell hot samosas at the counter! While we were there a guest came in just to purchase these. We were there on a Saturday around 2:30 and there were still a few left. There's a dedicated parking lot behind the store with a few small spaces, but we didn't have to compete with many cars at that time. We can't wait to come back! :) read more

I am a huge fan of Indian cuisine after getting my first taste of it in London years back while on vacation (GB and India share a very interesting history and the Brits are much better off with Indian food, rather than tasteless overcooked 'Prime Ribs of Beef' and canned spaghetti on toast, YIKES!). This store is small and packed to the brim and if you need Indian ingredients, it is the only show in town. I bought jars of mint and mango chutney and 5 of their freshly cooked veggie Samosas. The Samosas were super fresh, crispy, and non-greasy, and as good or better than you can get in our local Indian restaurants (or mainland as well). I always drove past India Market, and one day I wanted to learn to make my own Indian food! Hold and Behold! This place was filled with spices, nann bread (different types in the frozen section), groceries, and so much more! I got here too late, and wasn't able to score any samosas. The kind lady at the register informed me they make samosas half an hour after opening and when they sell out they don't make any more for the day. They sell spices by the big bag, plastic containers, and little packets (on one of the wall shelves) that are single-two servings. If you needed just a bit of spices those little packets will be your go to. They also sell a variety of seasonings. The total go to place for all my spices. I also picked up some Vegemite which was nice to pick up locally. They also have some wicked samosas made fresh there. Lots of yumminess there. We also picked up some curry mixes and some tea. They also have drinks from India in their cooler. So I had to try a Vitmo. That was like a fruitier cream soda. It was delicious. Smell inside is intoxicating! I came by hoping to pick up some prepared spices (wet or dry) for some kind of chicken dish. I found plenty of inspiration here. I settled on a dry tandoori spice preparation for a portion of a defrosted 10 lb Costco bag of chicken thighs. I also bought a small guava juice to slake my thirst and curiosity. The juice was great! The tandoori spice was excellent as well. I mixed that with a tad of water in a ziplock and added the chicken to marinate for a few hours. After grilling I cut up one of the pieces and threw it in a burrito wrapper with some homemade tzaziki sauce. While from the Mediterranean region, the tzaziki did not seem out of place and added a cooling balance to the somewhat spicy chicken. I believe yogurt is used in some methods of tandoori preparation though likely not in this particular way. Anyhow, it really worked for me! Come by to visit this shop! I have been coming here for the past 3 years and I was pretty much satisfied with all the stuff I was getting here. My ethnicity is Indian and since I cook heavily everything Indian, this is my staple place. But today I was terribly disappointed at their pricing that too in a pandemic. Understandably, this is Hawaii and things are expensive. But having said that the store has no barometer for pricing and all their products prices fluctuate wildly. They are dividing peanuts, poha , etc into smaller packets and selling at an absurdly high price. I buy samosas here every time I come and as I buy in bulk, chutneys are needed. I had two boxes of samosas and the store girl gave only one small chutney pack which is not even sufficient to go with one piece. When I asked for more as I had in bulk they refused and told me it's chargeable! I was so shocked because everytime I have come here they have never ever charged me for chutneys. Just because you are the only Indian store here that does not mean you get to charge any price despite your price matching policy. Terribly disappointing! The store girl refused to give me the owner's number so I could give him my feedback for improvement. I doubt if I will be coming here often now. read more

They have a lot of spices that are hard to find such as Sumac and barberries. Whole milk middle eastern yogurts always sell out, wow prices have nearly doubled on most items. This place has all the spices you can't find at Safeway/Whole Foods etc...and they are bagged in small quantities so you don't have to buy a whole container of the stuff. I went to this place a couple of times when it was on Beretania St. Now it's a little bit larger and has a nice corner space on Beretania/Isenberg St. There's about 5 parking spaces in the lot behind the store. When you walk in to the store, you are overwhelmed with the smell of all the different spices shoved up your nose at one time. After I got my 3 whopping sneezes out of the way, I was able to find everything I needed pretty quickly. They have an extensive freezer section with all the Indian versions of "Stouffers" TV dinners. They also have a whole line of SHAN spices (probably like McCormick or Schillings). Then of course if you are brave enough to try to cook your own dish, they sell all the ingredients you would need, including the frozen meats. I bought a 2lb bag of Basmati Rice. It was in a clear sealed bag with "Basmati Rice $4.99" written on the bag with a Sharpie pen. I have no idea where it came from, what brand it was, or if it was expired. I bought it anyway. I bought a little bag of cardomom seeds. There was no writing on that bag so I don't even remember how much it cost. I probably won't even remember what it is unless I label it myself. I did buy a bag of garam masala that was labelled and distributed commercially through DEEP foods in New Jersey. This is a cute store to get Indian spices/food. I really like this place! They are my go-to for spices and all things exotic. It is a very small store so COVID making it a dash-in-dash-out situation, but I am SO glad they are here on island. They do not just have Indian items. They also have some Italian, Middle Eastern, Thai, Greek, I could go on...great selection and good prices. They have lots of spices and herbs, snack foods (yummy bhuja etc.), sweets, preserves, sauces, chutneys, pickled items, olives, flours, rice, and so much more packed into their tiny store! They also have (if you are lucky before they sell out) cooked samosas that are super delicious. Pick up a few of them yummies and you will be hooked. Parking is conveniently located behind the store on Isenberg with an entrance nearby. Several stalls to choose from plus parking across the street along the road. Parking has never been a problem. Once I stepped foot into this establishment I was treated to the most delicious smells of their Samosas which i think is cooked daily. Stopped by for the first time today and found a small store packed to the ceiling with dry staple goods to cook all your South Asian and Mediterranean favorites. I came in for spices, but didn't end up taking any because I didn't want to have a gigantic bag of spice, which still cost about $5 plus for each and I needed a little of quite a few. I went to Down to Earth instead for those, but I think I'll come back to pick up the garam masala (whole) mix anyway. I also picked up a bag of red lentils; legumes and bean were cheaper than DTE's bulk bin. I also bought some feta and paneer (about $8 for each). I was super excited about the French feta, but opened it soon after and it's not quite as fresh tasting as I would have liked; it's vacuum packed and well within the expiration period, but it's starting to take on a little funk. I suspect it may have gotten warm at some point and is starting to deteriorate a litte. A bit off-putting, and I have a HUGE chunk. I also bought some spice mixes for basically ready made Indian entrees, but the paneer one I used was TERRIBLE. It taste like Knorr soup mix or something; too much sugar and I ended up throwing it away with three diced tomatoes I started cooking in it per the instructions. That's what I get for taking a short cut, even after my friend showed me how to make Indian food. There are also lots of jarred items (got myself some harissa and some capers), boxed, ready to eat entrees (hmmm, emergency missile or hurricane rations anyone??), which I hope are better tasting than that spice mix business. Bleh. There's also a beauty section and a lot of rice. No samosas while I was there, but they sell for $1.50 when available. Also, a nice selection of frozen meals/breads. Parking right next to the store. I'd go back, but wish they had some produce. That would really make it a one stop shop. read more
