Holy nostalgia!!! Hungry Ear Records makes me understand how my dad felt as he was just so attached to his vinyls so much so he built a shelf just house them and I hold that piece of furniture so dearly which hold my craft items now making it a house to hold our treasured hobbies. Not just records you're able to find cassettes and CD's and even cool decor browsing here is just amazing with music of every kind including of course local loves. This time capsule gem is tucked in SALT of Kaka'ako second floor right beside the parking garage as our ears are constantly hungry for the playlist to feed our moods and daily grind Hungry Ear has definitely kept it fresh and alive!! Thank you!

On this trip, I was helping my parents clean out their house. My dad had a collection of records that he didn't want any more, so I called Hungry Ear and spoke with Josh. He said to bring them in. I have been to SALT many times, but didn't know there was a record shop on the second floor! It is a cool little shop and they have used records and cds. I spoke with Jack, and he said to leave the records and he'll go through them, and it would take 30-45 minutes. He looks at the condition of the vinyl and maybe even titles. But I got a call and when I went back, he made an offer for the ones he chose. He also said he'd dispose of the ones he didn't buy, which made my life easier. This is a great place to come to! Especially if you want to sell them your records. Mahalo Hungry Ear!

I went down to Hungry Ear Records in SALT. The oldest record store in Hawaii...I believe it. I am old enough to have bought vinyl records on the reg and wished I had kept my Technics turntable and record collection. The have lots of used and new records, even some cassette tapes. Who knew cassettes would make a comeback? So, why go to a record store when I don't even own a turntable? CD's. I have gotten accustomed to streaming and downloads but I have an older vehicle...so I need CD's for the old SUV. Unfortunately, I did not find anything this afternoon. But it is always cool browsing a record/CD store. They have videos, books, and merch in their good sized store. Nicely air-conditioned - they allow 10 customers in at a time...check temperatures...provide sanitizer. Friendly customer service, who will answer and open the entrance door upon ringing their door bell. Parking is available in the adjacent structure.

Such a chill space here! There's a huge variety of music on different modalities (vinyl, cd etc.), dvds, merch, and more. So many genres with very specific sub-genres, making discovering new music really easy. They seriously have a bit of everything for everyone! Staff was very welcoming and knowledgable of everything in the store. They definitely helped set the atmosphere by asking us our own music preferences and putting it on so we were comfortable as we perused around. Awesome experience here!

If you're my age, when you hear "Hungry Ear Records", it throws you back to the 90's when the local bands were aplenty, the clubs and bars (i.e., Pink Cadillac, The Wave, Moose's, Anna Bananas) and SO.MUCH.CONCERTS (i.e., Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Jane's Addiction). Hungry Ear Records is now located on Auahi in Kakaako. If you're trying to picture where (if you haven't been to their new location) AND if you're 45+ and into the grunge/alternative scene in the 90's, it's where CD cafe used to be located. Am I showing my age? Of course, proudly. Now, why did I go there? For vinyl records I wish I didn't throw away any of my records especially with record players making a comeback. However, this is why I ended up at Hungry Ear Records. It's clean They have used and new vinyl They have collectors vinyl too It's a retro millennial feel It's an option to check out if you don't find anything from Ideas Books and Music (aka Jelly's) Overview Clean: Masks are required before you enter the store and you must sanitize your hands before browsing Prices: Deals to "It's that much?!" This place is dope. Upon entering you will be greeted by the sparkling lights of the disco ball hanging up above. Along the right wall is a collection of vinyl featuring rarities and classics. I saw a Record Store Day vinyl single of Wu-Tang Clan's "Protect Ya Neck." This place has it all for music lovers and collectors. Vinyl bins stretch from wall to wall. The staff is friendly and will answer any questions you may have. They also have CDs and tapes, I didn't get a chance to check those out. Eventually, I found a rare Bone Thugs n Harmony bootleg vinyl. These are the kind of goodies we collectors search for. There is more than Hip Hop here, that is just my kinda jam. They have everything, I saw many rock classics in my digs. One thing to note, they do know their prices. You won't find a rare vinyl for a cheap price. That said, you get what you pay for, and they have good stuff. Thanks, Hungry Ear Records!

One of the best record shops on the island! Even with the ongoing pandemic, this vendor ensures safety precautions. Someone checks your wrist temperature when you walk in and advise you to sanitize your hands before roaming the store. Their customer service is great, employees are always offering a helping hand in relation to all questions or any concerns. Their LP and CD stock is vast, from multiple crates filled with all types of music for all types of listening. With most records in tiptop shape, Hungry Ear Records is not only a home for various vinyl, but it's home to all customers that walk in!

Located on the second floor at Salt. They have a parking structure with an elevator door directly across theres. Nice to see somebody selling vinyls and CDs. Lots of hard to find items. Brings back memories. Awesome Hungry Ear for keeping it alive.

The store is spacious and well organized, with clearly arranged sections that make it easy to explore different genres. Walking through the aisles feels relaxed, and there is a wide selection of books ranging from best sellers and new releases to classics and specialty topics. One thing that stood out to me is how the store still maintains the traditional bookstore experience even though it is located inside a busy shopping center. The layout encourages browsing, and it is easy to spend a good amount of time looking through titles and discovering books you were not originally planning to buy. Another highlight is the range of non-book items available throughout the store. You will find journals, gifts, educational toys, and other reading-related merchandise, which adds variety to the experience. The atmosphere is calm compared to many other areas of the mall, and the store tends to attract a mix of students, families, and casual readers looking for a quiet place to browse. Overall, Barnes & Noble at Ala Moana Center is a great stop if you enjoy bookstores and want a comfortable place to explore books while spending time at the mall.

It turned out to be in Downtown close to Chinatown. While it doesn't have the scale of the Last Bookstore, this store shares some of the unique design elements of its SoCal progenitor like curving shelves and large vinyl collection. A broad scan of the books on display reflects titles that seem more avant garde than more commercial curations with sections devoted to science fiction, horror, true crime, and rock music. Jamie found an existential book about his favorite band called "Queen and Philosophy" (Photo 9), while I bought an intriguing manga cosplay history book called "Otaku Japan" (Photo 5). We probably could've spent another hour in here, but we had manapua on our minds. RELATED - Exploring Hawaii? Here's a collection of places I've visited and reviewed: https://yelp.to/n9JWu5nlzl

The store blends two cultures that often go hand in hand: underground literature and vinyl records. The space itself feels very curated. Instead of a large commercial bookstore layout, the shop has a smaller, more intentional selection of titles and records that reflect niche interests, counterculture themes, and independent publishing. It feels like a place built for people who enjoy digging through shelves to discover something unexpected. One of the highlights is the mix of books and vinyl. The store carries everything from rare or independent books to records that span multiple genres, which creates an environment where music and literature intersect. Browsing through the collection feels more like exploring a curated archive than a traditional retail store. The atmosphere fits well with the Chinatown neighborhood. Bethel Street has a strong creative and artistic identity, and Skull-Face Books & Vinyl contributes to that scene with its alternative aesthetic and independent spirit. What stood out most to me was how personal the shop feels. Independent stores like this often reflect the personality of the people behind them, and that character comes through clearly in the selection and layout. Overall, Skull-Face Books & Vinyl is a great place to explore if you are in Chinatown and enjoy independent bookstores, vinyl records, and creative spaces that feel a little different from mainstream retail shops.

The owner greeted me right away with that warm, aloha spirit energy. No attitude, no long drawn-out process. She got straight to scanning my old dusty books while I waited, and when she was done, she texted me -- yes, texted me -- to let me know. Walked up, got my receipt, got my quote. Super professional, super smooth. Here's the best part: while I was waiting, I browsed around and found three gifts for my grandchildren that I knew they'd love. So in one trip I freed up a ton of space at home from books that had been taking up way too much room and knocked out some gift shopping. Win-win-win! The whole setup is easy too -- rolled the carts right from my car into the store, no stress. My friend was chillin' in the massage chair outside the whole time, so nobody's time was wasted. I was originally just gonna dump everything at Goodwill. So glad I didn't. I'm already planning to come back with my old DVDs and CDs just sitting my shed in the backyard. If you've got stuff collecting dust at home, bring it here first. You might walk out with cash in your pocket and a smile on your face. Highly recommend. 5/5, no question!

To provide the same resources to HI residents, the Ashizawas opened a bookstore at Fort St Mall in downtown Honolulu, which is part of a national chain of independently owned stores operating under the Association of Logos Bookstores. They named their store, Logos Bookstore of HI. "Logos" is a Greek word that means to reason, divine wisdom and in Christianity, refers to Jesus as the Word of God. Logos Bookstore carries bibles, spiritual guides, fiction books, music, gifts, and greeting cards. Being a Christian bookstore, its most important book is the Bible, and because they're expensive, Logos has a 15% discount to make it more affordable if purchased there. Logos has most of all Bible translations, and the Bibles come in various colors and sizes. At times, it was a struggle for the Ashizawas to keep the bookstore open. With Amazon, it was less expensive to purchase online instead of from a bookstore. The Ashizawas noted that it was free to ship books to the store for pickup and how purchasers could tap the knowledge of the Ashizawas in accessing resources in growing their relationship with Christianity. They've never closed but moved six times, seeking lesser rent. Logos has been housed at Ward Warehouse, then to Queen St, Halekauwila St, Keawe St, and now to Ward Centre. Hoping that this is their permanent location. I love the store's inventory! They have a wide range of items: * Bibles, and lots of them. * Crosses of all sizes, colors, and materials. * Church supplies (candles, communion trays, etc.). * Fictional and non-fictional books. * Colorful tote bags with scriptures printed on them. * Wired array of greeting cards. * Mugs with scripture sayings. * Children's books and games. * CDs and DVDs. * Anointing oil. * Jewelry. * Seasonal items - Mother's Day gifts, Christmas ornaments, Easter egg fillers. * Clothing. * Gift items. * Bookmarks and scripture cards. * Non-inventory special orders. I enjoy browsing in this store, as there is so much to look at. I love to purchase scripture cards, gift items, and greeting cards, which I have received compliments from those receiving them. Their gift items are thoughtful and Christ-centered, especially if one is seeking to deepen their relationship with Christ. I love their greeting cards, as Logos carries an extensive inventory of cute and beautiful cards for both Christian and non-Christian believers. And where else can you get personalized engraved names on bibles. Logos has a rewards program for military, clergy, and the public. For a set annual membership fee, you can get a percentage of books and most other items, including greeting cards! Plus, in receiving an e-mail newsletter each month, there is a 25% off coupon for any one book, music, DVD, or gift item of choice. Staff is very knowledgeable about their inventory, friendly and willing to help. Tap the wisdom and suggestions by the Ashikawas. Logos has a quiet atmosphere for you to browse leisurely. Staff leaves you alone, so no need to have someone watching over your shoulders. When paying, they will always ask if you have a rewards account so that you can get a discount. There is a fee for credit card purchases. With its glass walls and bright lighting, Logos stands out in the darkened covered area of Ward Centre in Ward Village. The store interior is very clean and bright. Merchandise is well displayed throughout the store, with every space taken to showcase their importance. Hours of operation are Mon to Sat 9:30a to 6p, Sun closed. I love the location of Logos, as it's on the ground floor in the middle of Ward Center and if you're fortunate enough, you might get score a space directly across from Logos. I've parked in these convenient spaces many times and have run in to get a greeting card and run out. These spaces and those in the regular parking structure are free and shared among the stores of Ward Centre. Logos is an excellent Christian bookstore for those seeking resources who want to deepen their relationship with Jesus. It's also an excellent bookstore for non-Christians to browse through their awesome inventory, some that are not necessarily faith-based. Glad that we have you, Logos! Support local!

This store has absolutely everything from comic books, collectibles, MTG/TCG, D&D items and books, Warhammer, and also board games. Honestly if you are into any of those then this place is the place to come to. The absolute widespread level of inventory is only matched by how friendly the staff is and how comfortable of an environment they've created to spend your time there. They even put on events on nearly a daily basis depending what you're into. Pricing is very reasonable and I do majority of my shopping here as it is extremely competitive with online pricing. Not to mention being able to find the product that you're looking for locally is hard to find for most shops. The gameplay areas of the store are clean, tidy, and do not smell (yes... we know the stereotype of hobby shops). Plus they're always willing to spend the time to explain and help you get into any of the games they sell. I haven't played MTG for decades since I was a child and they were so kind to take me thru the differences from what I knew then to the large and vast game that it has become. They also make it simple to sign up on their website for Prerelease events and specialty game nights.
