Skelly keys
Kaliko P.

It's amazing that a place like this even exists on Oahu and I'm so glad that it's here, because I felt like I stepped into the old Bone Room when it was on Solano Avenue in Berkeley, California. The Bone Room sold many fine items, like Gothic Alchemy jewelry, bug specimens, home decor, minerals and rocks, antiques and incense; Hound and Quail has all that except the Gothic Alchemy jewelry and human/animal bones. They do have some taxidermy, antler horns and a hanging (fake) skeleton, which caught my eye and lured me into the store. As soon as you step into the store, you feel like I entered a portal into a past time where old Victrolas ruled, steam trunks were the "in" luggage, men's swim suits looked like women's, when skeleton keys actually worked, and when people had to actually write letters and wait for a reply! If I were on Instagram, I'd tag this store with the following words: magical, curated goods, historical goods, household decor, old, antique, men's, taxidermy, leather, man cave. I actually did not want to leave. I wanted to stay there all day, and even possibly the next day and maybe the day after that. One of the owners, Mark, was super nice and attentive and genuinely happy that I was enjoying their taste in curated goods. It's pretty epic, you gotta go check it out yourself! I parked in the Chinatown Municipal Parking on Bethel Street and it was pretty cheap at 50 cents an hour on a Saturday.

Pretty store with lovely little treasures. Friendly staff. I purchased a few items I really love.

I've been to quite a few antique stores in my 23 years of life. This is by far my favorite. It's aesthetic. It's pleasing. It's all of the good qualities you would like in an antique store. The collection is perfectly curated & matched with the most reasonable prices. If you're ever looking to "shop old decor," this is the place. Or simply stop in & just enjoy the atmosphere & have a nice browse. You won't regret it.

Cool stuff! So many antique things to look at and buy. You can easily spend a great time just looking through all the different things like: old cameras, old photos, frames, military badges and more. If you love and appreciate things of the past, then you'll definitely enjoy browsing around. They even have a separate shelf of classic literature that you can read or just admire.

I went downtown Tuesday to look for things for my unkos birthday! He loves old things and we joke cause he is old. The prices were pretty high but a few things are reasonable. Th young guy working was busy helping another lady in Japanese which I thought was cool but then he saw me and helped me find things in my budget. Lots of old haoles treat it like a museum, gotta buy things! If I make more money I'd buy more. Thank you

The aesthetic of the store was so beautiful and if I needed to decorate a library or some sort of mini museum in my house or a man cave these are definitely the vibes I'd want to replicate. I was wandering around downtown with a visiting friend, so we kept hopping in and out at the stores in the area looking for unique gifts for her to take home. We were initially intimidated to go inside, but after about 45 minutes at Hound & Quail, we looked at each other at checkout and both said how happy we were that we stopped by. It was a little pricy but this store carried such unique items like antique sewing machines, taxidermy, leather goods, historical family photos and vintage post cards that I think if you find something you love here, then it's definitely justifiable. I also can't imagine another place on island carrying such a collection of items! Definitely a unique store and highly recommend stopping by and taking a look at their curiosities and oddities!

I've bought taxidermy, mirrors, wall art, gifts, and more here, and I've also wandered in to just browse.

Wonderful, locally owned & operated business that offers an amazing variety of items with some…read moreunbelievably great deals on one-of-a-kind treasures. This auction house carries EVERYTHING, from local Hawaii estates (usually 2 to 4 estates per auction) to art from local collectors & museums. WARNING: THESE AUCTIONS ARE HIGHLY ADDICTIVE. Where else can you find a handwritten letter from King Kamehameha V to John Dominis, original paintings & prints by Jean Charlot, Madge Tennant, antique & contemporary furniture, an 18" Hawaiian koa outrigger canoe, a vintage 1960's Easy Bake Oven in the original box & a set of carpentry tools; all under one roof? They sell housewares from fine china by Lenox & handblown crystal stemware, antique tea cup collections, plus everyday use stoneware & glassware sets. I bought an entire rosewood living room suit - Ming-era style, carved with Chinese prosperity symbols, consisting of a 3 seat couch & two chairs (with custom-fitted cushions), 2 footstools, a large coffee table & 7' long credenza, all carved rosewood with custom cut glass tops on the coffee table & credenza; all in excellent, like-new condition for ONLY SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS ($600) - that's 1/10th the original cost. The matching solid rosewood dining table with 10 chairs sold to someone else for $600. They sell estate jewelry, everything from vintage affordable costume pieces to high-end quality gems & fine jewelry designs, to antiques watches & wall clocks. It's a family run business with a small full-time staff & a large group of family & friends who volunteer to help out during auctions. Wendy McClain, the owner, conducts the auctions herself & is tireless. There are no upset prices, but some people think that means they can offer $20 for something worth $20,000. Be warned - Wendy does not suffer fools lightly. People who repeatedly shout out ridiculously low offers find themselves invited up on stage to find out just how "easy" it is by auctioning one or two items themselves. I discovered McClain's a couple of years ago & now I attend almost every auction (they hold one about every month), partly to keep an eye out for undervalued treasures, partly to socialize with other regulars, who include local celebrities. I've also used their services to trade up - selling some of my older furniture & art when I've seen something that better suits me become available. There is a showing every Friday before the Saturday auction from noon to 6 pm, and fro 8 to 10 am on Saturday, with the auction starting at or shortly after 10 am. The auctions are attended by dealers & private collectors buying for themselves in addition to some very nice, genuinely helpful people, so take any advice or information you get with a grain of salt & take notes to do your own research at home the night before the auction, or bring your smartphone or tablet/iPad & look up comps on site. The staff & volunteers are helpful & friendly, but none of them claim to be experts, so be prepared to do your own research. McClain's used to be located in Gentry Center, but about a year ago they moved to 780 S. Beretania Street, directly across from HPD headquarters. There is no on-site parking, but there are metered stalls along Beretania & the side streets, and the metered stalls in the municipal lots (ewa makai corner of S Beretania & Alapai) are free on Saturdays. It's a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon!

Both of our grandparents were born and raised on Oʻahu, and this vintage store brought back so many memories. The owners were incredibly down-to-earth and fun to talk story with. I scored a green palaka shirt that I plan to rock on the beach for Christmas, plus picked up some screen-printed shirts as gifts. There's also an upstairs room with more premium pieces, including collaborations with Japanese brands. Shout out to the cool mom that was buying gifts up there for her son. I've never really been into vintage shopping, but Single Double completely changed my mind. This place was more than just a store- it was an experience, and one I can't wait to revisit.

Delightful shop owner instantly greets me and asks me what I'm looking for which I replied "I don't know!" lol! Following me and keep asking though I know I was looking for something just not knowing as I browse upon the mountain of plush dragons and the tower of red envelopes. I saw some cute keychains with various animals from the Chinese horoscope and thought they looked pretty cute and grabbed a couple which they put in envelope since I told them they were gifts...the envelopes kept breaking which I didn't mind as I'm using them in another way. They had so many items here and at such great prices it was still quite overwhelming to shop in here with your personal shopper constantly at your side but a great nice place and wished I could've spent more time here.
