I spend my weekend mornings in Chinatown shopping for food and supplies. I pretty much have a list by Friday night of things I need to pick up. Several months ago I was asked by a colleague to get shrimp chips. I initially went to my go-to Chinese grocery store to buy a box of those colorful ones that most of us can recognize. These are fond treats of my childhood as my mom would make them every so often, as well as see them when you have crispy chicken at Chinese restaurants. However, after frying them up my colleagues and I realized these colorful shrimp chips lacked the shrimp flavor and the texture was odd. This sent me on a hunt looking for real shrimp chips. I did find other grocery stores that carry other brands but in the back of my mind, I was still not satisfied. I then recall being served prawn crackers and shrimp chips when dining at Vietnamese restaurants. This made me want to look at other grocery stores, typically Vietnamese grocery stores looking for these prawn crackers or shrimp chips. Just recently, I noticed a new grocery store on N King Street, just a few doors down from Oahu Market and popular Fong's Meat Market. It was painted olive green and the bright lighting caught my attention. I walked over and noticed their signage posted up of "New Cholon" (NC). Upon entry, I was impressed on how clean and well organized the merchandise was displayed at NC. I immediately checked out the premade foods and ogled over the packs of summer rolls, sweet and savory glutinous treats. But I was on a mission, so I walked further deep into the store and in less than a minute, I located the area where prawn, shrimp and vegetable chips are. These offerings seemed legitimate so I picked up one of each. While standing in line to pay for my items, I noticed there were some shoppers buying fresh Vietnamese baguettes for banh mi sandwiches and fresh herbs. It was unfortunate I was on a tight schedule so I didn't have the time to leisurely shop around. Paying for my merchandise was super easy. The staff rung me up and automatically gave me a cash receipt for my purchase without asking. I didn't experience any language barriers as the staff's English was pretty good. Overall, I had a very pleasant first time experience where it has me wanting to explore New Cholon more. I did witness a large selection of face masks and a bucket of house made sour mustard cabbage. Perhaps I can pick some up and give it a try for the employee meal one day.

A new market in Chinatown just opened and it's New Cholon. I liked how clean and organized the shop was. There's a variety of items and it was interesting to see things here that I haven't found at other shops. It's worth a visit if you are in the area!

Buyer beware this store has no price tags on their products. Why because they'll up charge you and rip you off.

I always come here "just to look," but end up with a gigantic, branded reusable bag filled to the brim with imported Asian snacks. Many Chinese products, but also Korean, Japanese, Thai, etc. Snacks range from exotic chip flavors to candies and sodas. Further back you'll find more substantial instant noodle meals. The Chinese ones are actually great and are way more complex ingredients-wise than your standard instant noodle. Also in the back are Chinese cooking ingredients such as sauces and dry goods, but my favorite is the super thick, wide glass noodles that I use for hot pot. There's also a small section with Asian toiletry products that I've personally never tried. I must say it feels like there is less variety of items since they moved locations. Some snacks are repeated in different spots on the shelves to make it look like there's more variety. My favorite latiao that I used to get at their old location is no longer available. :( I'll keep coming back regularly because they're always getting new items in stock.

The back of the store now has lights on. You can see in the back of the store. You no longer need to be apprehensive about venturing in the back of the previously unlit store. There is air conditioning, however, it doesn't seem to work well. I was in here for ten minutes and perspiring due to humidity and heat. I asked the one employee if she was uncomfortable in working in this heat. She replied that they are required to keep the front door open to let customers know it's open, so much of the cooled air escapes. It is crazy warm inside. Service is good. The one employee must stock, look out for customers and ring up sales. There is a half off table that I didn't observe in the past. Some of the drinks in the refrigerated section appear ready to burst. Overall, plus one star for labeling and price tags. I picked up a few sugar free and low calorie drinks to try here.

I decided to do the long walk from Waikiki down to the store, and I was so rewarded for the effort. Walking up and the row of epic restaurant stalls had me grinning from ear to ear. There were so many delicious options OUTSIDE the store that I almost never made it in. From handrolls featuring the freshest seafood from Hokkaido to wagyu kushiyaki and more, my mouth was watering seeing it all beautifully displayed in the windows, and I'm surprised no one said anything about my gawking. Don Q is such a fun store because they have anything and everything you can think of across nearly every category. If I said they're like the Japanese Walmart, it wouldn't hit quite right because the quality and breadth of the selections here are far better. My favorite part of visiting Don Q has to be the incredible array of Asian specialty ingredients and snacks they sell and the reasonable prices. I picked up some gifts here including some exceptional styles of furikake and togarashi, but saw way too many other things I wanted. They also have amazing prepared foods here, specifically Japanese items. There's an entire sushi counter featuring all cuts of bluefin and more, freshly made onigiri, great selection of bentos and and poké too! You really owe it to yourself to visit!

You know those snack boxes that people sell online with snacks from Japan or wherever? I'd imagine just grabbing a bunch of these snacks and candies and curating your own box lol You can tell that they're still setting up, but there was still enough to keep us intrigued! We initially said we didn't need a cart, but we were so wrong. We grabbed some random snacks just to try and review with each other, and compare them to the ones here in the States! We grabbed almost a cartful of snacks... not even ashamed to say it, but the total came to around $43, which to me wasn't that bad. This store is spacious, bright, and new. Everything is very organized and easy spot the price. Compared to the main store, this one has mainly snacks and edible items, but a lot of more fragrance and cosmetic items. We even found some items cheaper at this store. The weird thing about this store is the flooring is not level. About 8 feet from the windows toward the parking lot, the floor slants down, so your cart will run away or you might feel a little dizzy from the imbalance. Overall, a nice spacious and clean store with a good amount of Asian snacks and food items. A nice addition to the neighborhood. No need to go into town now for these things. Cashiers were nice and friendly. Besides the unleveled floor, this is a more comfortable place to shop compared to the main store.
