Genesis Lounge was such a pleasant surprise! We did not have a good time at the oyster bar, so decided to go here. Tucked upstairs in a cute, narrow townhouse-style building, it already feels like a hidden gem before you even walk in. They offer both indoor and covered outdoor seating, and we chose to sit outside. We stopped in after having a disappointing meal elsewhere, and this place completely made up for it. I ordered the poke bowl, and my then partner had the sliced steak - both were fresh, flavorful, and left us full. We also had no reservation and were seated immediately. If you're looking for a relaxed spot with great food and easy seating, I'd definitely recommend stopping by! read more

This is a hidden gem on Lewers street in Waikiki, located on the second floor with an beautiful outdoor seating area. This is a great spot to come with a group of people and share a few dishes. I love that you can reserve a table right off of the Yelp app. Happy hour is from 5pm-6:30 with food a drink specials like a $10 margarita, $5 draft Japanese beers, and ahi poke, yuzu chicken, and garlic shrimp. There's lots of fresh seafood on the menu with their dishes having Japanese influence. This is a great spot if you're looking for a pau hana spot in Waikiki! read more

Decided to try out this restaurant after seeing all the positive reviews but the experience was a little disappointing. Went during the happy hour and the place was empty. The drink prices were good but the food was mediocre. The garlic shrimp tasted like frozen shrimp and was soaked in the oil with minor garlic taste. The ahi steak was well done and bland The location is hidden on third floor with patio seating. It's good for happy hour draft beer and better to get dinner elsewhere read more

This hidden spot (just a block off of Kalakaua on Lewes) was great! We had a late lunch in Kialua this afternoon so we only went in for something cold to drink. We were seated on the covered patio in the back, very cute little spot! I ordered a Beerworks IPA and my wife had a Blue Hawaiian. As we sat there discussing our day we watched several delicious looking and wonderfully aromatic dishes coming out to the other tables. The guests were oooing and aahing over the plates and we were very sad that we weren't hungry!! The garlic shrimp, Kalua pork nachos, yuzu chicken and 4 cheese pizza w/ big island honey ALL looked delicious!! We will be back! And the staff were very friendly and welcoming!! Great cocktail menu, from Hawaiian Mai Tai's to numerous delicious cocktails. Pupu Menus is delicious. We had the Kalua pork empanadas, which was delicious, local fair, and fresh Hawaiian menu items are varied and delicious. Service was fun and ambience is very casual, but excellent service. We had various foods from the Ramen, which was delicious, appetizers, or pupu's were authentic, flavorful, and delicious, salads are fresh, sushi and sashimi were fresh and delicious!! Don't let the dumpy looks of this hidden gem fool you... I heard so much chatter about Genius Lounge that I knew we had to try it. When we walked up for our reservation, I told my husband, this place looks kind of sketchy. His immediate response: "the best places are always the ones that look like a dump." So, up the dirty staircase up to the 3rd floor we went. Upon entering, we were warmly greeted and brought to our table on the street side facing lanai. There were several other parties already seated enjoying their yummy smelling good. By the time we left around 8:15ish, the place was packed. We started off with cocktails (lemon drop for me and The Duke signature cocktail for my husband). Both delish! Going in though, we already knew we wanted to try a few different items from the menu (pickled veggies, spam katsu, Caesar salad, and the ribeye skewer). Everything was SO YUMMY! We of course ended our night with the Hawaiian brownie. I honestly could have eaten my own. It was SO GOOD! The prices are reasonable, and the service is outstanding. Genius Lounge from the outside looks very deceiving, but you will not be disappointed. read more

Genius Lounge is a hidden restaurant and bar located up two flights of external stairs to a not really identifiable doorway. No external awning or sign to tell you that a restaurant was located way at the top of the stairs. There is a beautiful mural to entertain you as you walk up the stairs though. The place is also one of the few restaurants that opens late for food but is on a not very well traveled Waikiki side-street. So you could easily miss the establishment by thinking....dark and not busy side street - sketch, two flights of stairs with no elevator in sight - how am I going to drink and navigate the stairs?, do I walk up two flights, look around, and turn around and walk back down if I don't like the looks of the place? What to do? What to do? Well, it's late and they have decent drink prices and serve food til 11pm. Thus, walking up and up and up and in. Greeted, walked past the nice looking bar, and seated on the external patio. Big menu, so it took some time to peruse in the dark. Finally selected edamame, drinks, ahi steak lightly seared, and a poki bowl. The fish was fresh but a bit pricey, but hey, you're in pricy Waikiki and not paying more for a RT Lyft or rental car & hotel parking to get you out of the area for less expensive food. At least not late tonight. So overall, food was decent, not mind blowing but you are getting fresh fish. Service was attentive and people were super nice, but it's just those external stairs.... Can't drink a lot and make it down those steps.... read more

Solid place to visit and the staff is wonderful. Side street from the main road and up a flight of stairs above an oyster restaurant. Came in during happy hour and the dishes were excellent. Clearly smaller than their normal sizes, but ordering a couple of dishes to try new things. They will let you know happy hour is ending and once 6:30 will grab the menu. The Poke was very refreshing, nice amount of heat for the spicy. The Karaage was tasty, just a little over cooked for me. The sauces added a different level of flavor to include heat. It did not come with rice, ordered a side for the chicken. Kahlúa pork nachos were ok, the best part was the fried chips. The negatives was the bland pork and the fake cheese The facility places music but it does not drown out the ppl walking by that are loud or large vehicles. There is bar sitting with a TV on playing a local sport. Overall, highly recommend and if you come during happy hour, the prices seem to save you $2-3 per item. read more

Finally made it up the stairs to this cute cozy Japanese Hawaiian fusion bar in Waikiki. Got there in time for their Happy Hour from 5-6:30 which includes various drink options, appetizers, and a few protein dishes offered at about $2 off. We started with draft beers. My Japanese friend got the Kirin ($5) and I got the Coco Weizen which I preferred to the P-ssy Grabs Back both from the Honolulu Beer Company ($7). Taught the friend a new slang word when she wondered why our server was blushing and laughing when she delivered my drink. The tomodachi liked the kalua pork nachos which came with crispy fried wonton type chips and a cheese that resembled Velveeta. I prefer corn chips and shredded cheese but the flavor of the the pork was good. She also liked the curly fries with garlic ($1 more) which came with a glaze that made it look oily. Again the taste was good but I prefer my fries dry. My favorite dish was the yuzu chicken which tasted "sappari" (fresh) and flavorful with the citrus sauce which complemented the chicken while still allowing the flavor of the meat to come through. I was impressed that it was a whole chicken cut up into pieces bones in. We also got a green salad for a healthful element. Simple and served its purpose. All in all pretty good but I would have had a better dining experience if the AC worked better. A bit difficult since the doors are open and it was a hot day. A number of couples sat outside on the lanai which could be cute and romantic in cooler weather and later in the evening. If I return I want to try the poi noodles. read more

The food here was decent -- if I were rating based on that alone, it might've been a 3 out of 5. Unfortunately, the service left a lot to be desired. When we were asked about drinks, we opted for water for the whole family since we had elders and kids with us, and it was very hot seating outside. In response, the two Asian women serving us exchanged glances and rolled their eyes -- completely unnecessary and unprofessional. When we asked for recommendations, one of them dismissively replied, "I don't know what you like, so..." which felt rude and unhelpful. Thankfully, we later had a much better experience with a different server -- the one with the beautiful flower tattoos (a fellow Jersey girl!) -- who was friendly, attentive, and made the rest of our visit more pleasant. I left a 25% tip just because of her. Still, the initial treatment soured the experience enough that I wouldn't return or recommend this place to others. read more

Hawaiian Japanese fusion! What a splendid change from all the touristy restaurants in Honolulu. Our server Lisia was so friendly and helpful with many great suggestions from the huge menu that was also reasonably priced. The red mochiko chicken nanban was great and reminded me of a quality General Tso Chicken. If you like Orange Chicken then try this, it has a more refined flavor profile. We yearned for some rice to go with it so Lisia suggested we try their special Waianae Shaka Moa Egg Over Rice. First let me tell you that they pride themselves on using island eggs, apparently safer to consume raw than than mainland eggs. The dish is a mix it yourself bowl of rice with a side of raw egg and white soy sauce. We were a bit scared and only used the yolk, but overall it was wonderful. The tan-tan poi pasta tsukemen with island egg (soft poached) was awesome with homemade noodles, and mix it yourself soup broth of white sesame flavor and ground pork. Next time I'd like to try their Pasta Carbonara with Kalua pork soup broth. The original jumbo garlic shrimp came in a hot skillet with garlic butter. However we didn't like that we had to peel the shrimp. Also it was a rather muted flavor profile. Perhaps they should have added a splash of white wine while cooking. Anyway it's tough to beat the garlic shrimp that you can find all over the island. I wouldn't get this dish again. The Poke Nachos were wonderful and came with homemade wonton crisps as the chips. It was served in a large bowl with that island egg again. They told us to break the egg and toss the nachos around. It was great! I love it that they have Honolulu Brewery beers. The Coco Weizen beer was awesome! Unfortunately they don't have Sauvignon Blanc wine. Be sure to arrive between 5pm to 6:30pm to do Happy Hour! Overall adorable ambience on the 3rd floor of a small building. Like a residential premises. It feels like somebody has warmly invited you into their home. read more

I don't know why there's not more hype on this place! This restaurant is located on the 3rd floor and is pretty hidden, but they serve amazing food and drinks! Service was also really good and fast and they helped give us suggestions on what to order. We ordered a bunch of food and they were all delicious, but the poi noodles with poke was the highlight of our meal. It was so unique and different, but it was also really tasty. I ended up finishing up the whole meal to myself!! The steak were really juicy and tasty too. They also had a salmon and tuna carpaccio with tofu suace and that was amazing too! Great upstairs location. The warm friendly staff and the plants and decor make for an inviting space.

This has quickly become my favorite Asian-Hawaiian fusion restaurant. It is the kind of place that lingers in your mind long after the meal is over. Ever since my first visit, I have found myself craving three standouts again and again: the sushi, the tofu, and the yuzu chicken. The restaurant is tucked away on the third floor of a three-story building. Simply head up the stairs and you will spot the dog statue marking the entrance. We went for happy hour, which runs from 5:00 to 6:30 PM, arriving around 5:30. At that point the dining room was calm, but within half an hour it was nearly packed. They take both walk-ins and reservations, which is worth keeping in mind. I chose this spot for my husband's birthday, and it was the perfect choice. We will absolutely be back. Happy hour pricing trims about three to four dollars off most items. The food menu during that window is slightly limited, but the highlights are worth it. The tofu poke and the yuzu chicken stood out immediately. Drink pricing makes happy hour especially appealing, and the restaurant also serves the regular menu during that time. I appreciated that, as many restaurants restrict you to a smaller selection. The yuzu chicken was juicy, flavorful, and well-executed. The sushi initially surprised me with its flavor combination, but by the second bite I realized how refreshing it was. The tofu, however, was the star. Served with miso, it had the perfect firm yet delicate texture, complemented by the crunch of onion and the depth of the sauce. Unpictured but noteworthy, they serve Choya. I ordered it and found it smooth and strong without an unpleasant bite. At around eight dollars, it felt like a fair price. The spam fries were another pleasant surprise. I am not the biggest fan of spam, yet the nut sauce worked beautifully. The flavor leaned more toward a hot dog profile, but it was enjoyable. For dessert, the ube ice cream with mochi was the clear winner. I only wished for a bit more crunch from additional nuts, but the mochi had an ideal texture: gooey inside with a light fried crisp on the outside. The flavors balanced each other perfectly. We also tried the pizza, which was rich and heavy on the cheese. To me it lacked sauce and leaned more toward a quesadilla in profile, topped with parmesan, bacon, and egg. Still, it was tasty. I think a drizzle of balsamic or something similar could elevate it further. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with string lights adding charm. Seating options include indoor, outdoor, and bar. The staff was fairly attentive, professional, and friendly, rounding out an excellent dining experience. read more

Stopped by on a Monday night and we were promptly seated. Ordered drinks and an appetizer. Both came out quickly. Short rib appetizer was deep fried and had the consistency of shoe leather. Almost impossible to chew. Ordered dinner and another round of drinks. Drinks came... dinner never arrived. Waitress seemed surprised when she stopped over about 45 minutes later and we still didn't have our food despite several tables around us that came in long after us receiving their meals. We had been there about 90 minutes in to total and she said that our meal was delayed due to a large party? There was no large party. We asked for our check and left. Will not be back. read more

Cocktails were smooth -- perhaps a little too smooth, I could've gone stronger. Ahi and salmon carpaccio came through savory and filling, but I liked the ahi a bit more (sorreh salmon). We loved our meal and experience from here. Friendly staff. Amazing vibe. Quick service. It was nice to get away from the tourist spots. Great happy hour selections. I've heard about their loco moco but after our tour, I felt like it would be too heavy so I had their sushi specials. It was huge! The tuna was so fresh and the flavors were on point. Karaage chicken was delicious. Love the different sauces. For cocktails, I should've got a regular mojito but I got the coconut mojito. A Cozy Start to Our Hawaiian Adventure After a long day of travel, all we wanted was a quick, satisfying meal to refuel and soak in the excitement of finally arriving in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. We didn't realize the restaurant required a bit of a climb -- which proved challenging for someone with knee issues -- but once we made it up, the effort was well worth it. The food was hearty and delicious, the perfect way to kick off our first meal in Hawaii. Since we had eaten a large meal earlier in our journey and were adjusting to the time difference, we stuck to the happy hour menu. Even so, everything we ordered was flavorful and filling. The main dining area was a bit dim for our preference, but we found a spot on the outdoor patio. The fresh breeze and views of people passing by created a relaxed, island vibe that helped us unwind. A memorable and satisfying first taste of Hawaii -- even if our knees didn't quite agree with the stairs! read more

Have eaten here several times. It is a good place for happy hour drinks or for a few dishes of your favorite appetizers. The interior hosts the bar, kitchen 2 restrooms and the several tables. There is a front and back patio. The restaurant is on the third floor, only accessible via a long stair case. The ambiance is reminiscent of a Spanish or Italian 3 floor villa that was seemingly converted from a house to a trio of restaurants. It is tucked away and hidden between hotel and apartment buildings, but is easy to find on street, with a menu at street level as well. Highlights of the food menu were as follows: Spam Katsu, 16 pieces cut into rectangular strips with macadamia nut sauce. Black Mochiko Chicken Nanban which was perfectly crispy with just the right balance between savory and sweet. It is a personal favorite of mine for fired chicken when in town or Waikiki area. Kalua pork nachos are a very generous serving. If ordering many food items or if your party is small, I recommend getting the smaller portion as the full size portion is a lot of food. Chips were not overly fried like some other establishments, which was a nice touch. This allowed the chip to retain structure for scooping and dipping and not fall apart, but also avoided being overly crunchy, oily and chewy. Service is friendly and efficient. Just be aware that since it is a place for alcohol and there are many tourists, it can sometimes get a bit loud if the place is very busy. read more

We tried the gyoza and mochiko appetizers. Both were delicious. The gyoza sauce was delicious as were the filling. The mochiko chicken was nicely fried and had a nice crispy crunch and not greasy. Also had the regular and pineapple mojitos. The mojitos were light in alcohol (almost couldn't taste it) and the pineapple splash was a nice touch. The drinks tasted more like a fruit punch unfortunately. For our main entrees we had the yuzu chicken, furikake ahi steak and the original garlic shrimp. read more

We've been here twice now and our most recent visit was great! Located on the third floor and has two outdoor patios and indoor seating to choose. You have to walk up stairs - so be mindful of this! Especially after too many drinks lol. Easy to make reservations via OpenTable. They also have Happy Hour (5-6:30pm), I've never been but it looks like a good deal If you can make it. Food: +Spam Katsu with Mac Nuts Sauce ($13) - surprisingly really tasty! It's like Spam Jenga! Delicious Mac nut sauce complemented it well. +Black Mochiko Chicken Nanban ($14) - one of my favorite items on the menu! Savory, tangy, crispy chicken. A few veggies thrown in the sauce. Who could not like? +Kalua Pork Nachos - Large ($17) - waitress said it could feed 3-4 people, but we shared this and 2 other dishes between 2 people lol. We are hungry people! We still took some for leftovers. It's great for a table with a lot of people. Good Pork and I like that the wonton chips were very light/crispy. Jalapeño cheese sauce was different, but works! Kudos to the chef! We thoroughly enjoyed every dish! Drinks: +Orion Draft Beer ($6) - Good, just wish the glass was refrigerated to keep beer colder. +Fiji Cocktail ($15) - a little too sweet and I could not taste any alcohol. Better for lightweight people who like really sweet drinks. Service: There were two very large parties occupying both sides of the patio and I feel the staff did a very good job balancing them and their smaller party customers. I appreciate the waitress informed us that food would take longer which was understandable given how busy they were. The waitress came by to check on us multiple times and filled our waters. They were very nice and friendly! Good place for late night pupus! Will be coming back again:) Con: - the first time we came there was a overwhelming sewer smell (others have mentioned). This time we didn't really smell it but it can make for an unappetizing meal. I'm not sure this is something they can control though since it's probably coming from some place nearby. Just request indoor seating if this bothers you. read more

Simple food, great ambiance, and sweet service! The items on the menu isn't super complicated and the food is amazing! The fresh raw oysters with the vinegar is soooo goood! You can tell they were fresh! I also got the garlic shrimp, which pairs well with the bread(crostinis). Soaked up all that juicy lemony-garlickiness. Lastly, i could not leave without any of the delightful desserts... As someone not a fan of kulolo, i am 100% a fan of fried yumminess. Imagine it as a goeeey brownie feel, but it was kulolo... so in a sense... it's "healthier" lol.... It was sooo goooeyyy and warm... and with the creaminess of the ube ice cream... it was for sure a show stopper! I could definitely come back for this dessert alone! And maybe a nice cocktail as well! Let's talk geographically... and scenic... it's isn't the prettiest patio view... definitely not the worse though. The restaurant is very small and on the 3rd floor so not easily accessible with anyone in a wheelchair or have a hard time walking up stairs. A few suggestions I would say though is to view the menu online... their physical menu is a bit deteriorated and very distracting (over the top). Their staff is very friendly and takes care of their guest very well! I wish i remembered my servers name... but he was really nice and he said he was new.... I came in one night alone, him and the other guy was very personable! I'll be back for sure! read more

I've visited Waikiki before, but Genius Lounge Hawaii quickly became my absolute favorite dining spot! The Japanese-Hawaiian fusion here is exceptional, with incredibly fresh ingredients and unique flavors I haven't experienced elsewhere (and I'm from California and go to Asia often so that's saying a lot!) We ordered the pork tsukemen with handmade taro noodles, which was outstanding--something truly special for noodle lovers like myself. The ahi tuna nachos were my personal highlight, served with perfectly crisp wonton chips instead of traditional nachos which is now my favorite poke combo. Honestly, I'd eat this every single day. My boyfriend loved the black nanban chicken, and the loco moco was a comforting classic. We also enjoyed a refreshing piña colada. Great atmosphere, ideal for a relaxed night with friends, especially with outdoor seating close to the beaches. the vibe is very fun and feels like you're at an izakaya with friends. Super friendly and attentive staff as well. would definitely recommend, especially if you love Japanese or hawaiin food! read more
