Sushi Matsuri is one of the small restaurants in a small food court along Kalakaua- in the same building as Stix, Sephora and Victoria's Secret. The restaurant is located in the lower level, below ground floor so you have to take the stairs down. I was staying at the Royal Hawaiian Resort next door so it took me 5 minutes to walk here : ) I had dinner here and ordered the salmon nigiri trio, salmon skin salad and a bowl of the miso soup. The staff sat me within 5 minutes - it wasn't busy on a Sunday evening. Their menu is straightforward. This is not an all-Japanese restaurant so do not expect any izakaya dishes. It is called Sushi Matsuri for a reason. Everything was served in a timely fashion and everything was delicious! The salmon skin was crispy and tasty with a decent amount of dressing. The salmon nigiri was fresh and the miso soup hot. The staff was also prompt is removing my empty dishes and even gave me an extra napkin! They refilled my iced water and I never felt rushed. Mrs. Picante and I enjoyed a milestone birthday in Waikiki. It was a rare trip without the kids, so we got to try a few places we otherwise wouldn't go with three younguns in tow. On one of our nights there, we felt like sushi, and found this place on our phones. I have to admit, it took us a minute to find the joint; turns out it is in a downstairs food court. While it didn't look like much, this place had legit sushi-- fresh, well-made, and unique offerings. There is something to be said for a place that makes GREAT sushi rice. It's such an underrated thing, but the right rice simply raises the entire bar of whatever fish is on top of it or wrapped inside it. We enjoyed some delicious menu offerings, and a few specialties that were available until they were gone-- the toro we enjoyed was like butter. I didn't want to swallow it, it was so delicious. The server was a sweet older lady, and an older gentleman behind the bar put our meals together faster than I thought he would. Sure, the ambiance has all the feel of a food court below sea level... but somehow, that adds to the Aloha charm of this place. Not sure I need to go back to Oahu, if I'm being honest... wasn't my favorite Hawaiian island, keeping it real. I worked at a sushi place for 8 yrs during college and we are Sansei /Japanese- I ve eaten at a lot of Japanese and sushi places all over the world. Don't sleep on this spot. The service is on point, the menu is very inclusive for vegetarians. Food comes out fast and correct. The prices are more than reasonable for the superb quality of each ingredient. My oldest is in Japan about half the year sometimes, and she's SO critical of mainland Japanese food/sushi. She said this is her favorite place. I think we've tried everything here and it's all phenomenal. We have tried a lot of spots on the island, most are good- none compare or even come close to this place. I love this place, for the convenience, price, and quality. Every day they have the limited daily special sushi set, with way lower prices but the same high quality as everyone else. I watch them preparing the sushi together with everyone's. Such a good deal. My favourite is their shrimp and salmon ones, but other ones are just as good. They also have kamaaina discounts too. for lunch they have a $10 nigiri sushi special (up to first 10 orders). You get 6 different nigiri options (kam discount does not apply to this promo). They allowed take out for this. i didnt dine in since i had my pup with me, but there were some tables outside too along the hallway. Found this little hidden gem in STIX Asia in the Waikīkī shopping plaza, lower floor. Considering this spot is in Waikiki, the price of the food for the quality and quantity is reasonable. I personally really enjoyed the takowasa, the squid with mentaiko, and the Matsuri bowl (chirashi). They also offered the 300ml bottle of Dassai sake (also decently reasonably priced considering the location) which I highly recommend to be paired with the food. We didn't order a lot of items as this was our first stop for our "Waikīkī adventure date-night" where we checkout multiple restaurants in the area. Parking is located in the building and is validated for 2hrs (huge plus and convenient). Recommend going early for dinner as it can get crowded. read more

Nice place to get your sushi fix! This restaurant is located in Stix Asia, which is a food hall with various food options that's on the basement level of Waikiki Shopping Plaza. You can enter on Seaside Ave or Kalakaua, and you just look for the restaurant with the green noren at the entrance. I came on a Saturday night and was able to be seated promptly. Service was super attentive, and my food came out really quickly as well! I got the Matsuri bowl and the tofu salad. The bowl had an assortment of super fresh sashimi; the portion size was on the smaller size for the price, but it's to be expected since you're in Waiks. Tofu salad was not bad! I asked for extra sweet sauce on my shrimp tempura. They were so considerate because they also gave me extra sauce on the side. I didn't see it at first but the bowl also came with tempura string beans which was hidden underneath five pieces of tempura lol. I love that! Also ordered the unagi bowl. For some reason we got tiny bones in the unagi. But the bones did go away after chewing. I didn't think that the unagi had bones when served. But it was all good and we were very satisfied. Came here on a Monday night, we were seated instantly. The place is clean and organized, but there's nothing special about it. Our waiter was this older guy with glasses, he was a little pushy and slammed the menus down after we were done ordering. My cousin wanted cooked salmon, waiter waved me off saying he would do that but the salmon came out half raw and only cooked on top. It was so tough that my cousin spat out two of the three. The fish in my chirashi bowl was decent but our portions were all too small, we were all still hungry after and ended up going to two different spots in the area to get full. The price was decent, but the portions are smaller than what we are used to. For reference, we had heavy pupus prior to dining here, and i still could finish the whole portion. I don't consider myself a big eater so i think some ppl may dine here and not come away feeling full afterwards lol. The chirashi was a good assortment, but again, the portion is what i would consider a half size. The tempura bowl was just ok, being that it only came with shrimp and green beans. It's kind of hidden in a strip mall underground, but you get what you pay for and this is extremely Good Liguiri and Sushi for a really good price, especially in Hawaii. It's high rated on yelp for a reason it seems like it's a go to spot and they do have specials every day but you have to make sure you get there in time. I highly recommend finding this place and getting some good sushi for a great price with quick Service Not a crazy line. Just ate here because of all of the amazing reviews and had the worst sushi of my life. And I'll even eat gas station sushi. Service was extremely fast, however, their spicy tuna roll has canned tuna in it? The inari was extremely tough and not made for sushi, so every bite was a choking hazard. We also got the veggie roll that was full of dark brown avocado. The rolls were also expensive - $21 for a canned tuna roll drenched in mayonnaise. I expected fresher/higher quality from a restaurant that supposedly sources everything straight from Japan (maybe the canned tuna is from Japan?). I can't speak for the sashimi since we only ordered rolls, however, I will not be returning. Would not recommend. read more

There's nothing fancy about this place, but it was bright and clean. The ala carte nigiri seemed a little expensive, so I opted for three sushi rolls, a California, rainbow, and a spicy caterpillar roll. They were huge in size, and the fish was fresh-tasting and delicious. That, with a couple of frosted mugs of draft Asahi beer, made for a filling and satisfying meal. read more

I can only match what others have said - A really nice, classic Japan experience, something I'd expect in a department store, train station, small shop in my area - all good things, matches places I've loved over the years. The food quality is absolutely first rate, with some fun daily deals if you are luck enough to get one. Bento/sets are a great go to if you don't know where to start, and then add a nama/draft beer and it feels like home in Japan!
