Tried the duck soba and wasn't that impressed, the broth was really good but it was also $30 for soba and a few pieces of duck. The duck was also a little tough. Soba was a little too soft for my liking but really enjoyed the broth. They had some items on happy hour so got the takoyaki for $5. We also got a really small bowl of curry rice $10, didn't think that was worth it but there were not many items for kids, no children's menu. Curry tsuke with soba was served cold with a hot (temperature) curry dipping sauce with onion and thin sliced pork $23 something different that you don't normally see. I got the cold soba set, comes with tempura. The soba was fresh and chewy. Tasted like Japan. It was delicious. 5 stars for soba. The tempura was good too. Don't get the ribeye skewer. It was the worst bland chewy ribeye we've ever had. Unfortunate it was really expensive for such a horrible piece of disappointing meat too! They can do better. Seriously. One of the very few places that specialize in Soba noodles on the island! This was the perfect lunch - light, cool and refreshing, and doesn't leave you feeling heavy because it's soba! We had the lunch combo, one with curry and the other with tempura rice bowl. It's a very good portion and it reminds me of the soba noodles I had in Japan. It tastes the same! The cold broth is full of flavor and is perfect for beating the hot and humid weather here. Glad we came across this place and we'll absolutely come back while living here! This place is a hidden gem in the food court of Waikiki Shopping Plaza. My wife and I were just walking around after our day at North Shore. I wanted something light to eat and something cold and we found Shingen. The waiter Kayin was very friendly and very helpful. I had the cold soba and my wife had a mini beef bowl. I also had the grilled beef tongue and pork belly skewers. All the food were amazing and Kayin even gave me a special tea you make with some of the soba water with the left over soba sauce. At first I thought it was a weird idea but it turned out to be the perfect ending for a cold soba meal. Excellent customer service from Kayin. Unbelievable. They charged a "KITCHEN FEE" for cold noodles. Came here for the soba. Left feeling like I was personally audited by the IRS. Imagine my surprise when the bill arrived and I saw a mysterious "kitchen fee" tacked on. For soba. The dish that is served cold. What exactly are we funding here? Is there a hazard pay surcharge for dunking buckwheat noodles into cold water? Does the chef require emotional counseling to open the refrigerator? Silly me, I thought paying $25 for a tiny bamboo mat of noodles was already covering the cost of the kitchen actually existing. Styx in general has a lunch special until 3pm on weekends. The special varies from place to place and at Shingen is a soba and don combo. I wasn't feeling hungry enough to get both, so I just got the beef tsuke. The store only had one server, since it was a Sunday and also a small location. So things may take a little time to cook. The store markets itself on health benefits. It has a special moringa noodle option, but I played it safe with the regular noodles. (The "healthy" food aspect also seems to up the price compared to some other restaurants in Styx.) The portion felt small for 21, but I am not the target demographic, so I do not know how it compares to other health conscious places. The meat is lightly warmed but went well with the soba. It had a spicy kick at the end, and when dipped in the sauce, it got a jerky like depth added to the flavor. They did not offer the sobayu, so I think you need to specifically ask for it. It was great to try, and has a very authentic experience, but for the price, it is better to save it for a special event. read more

We ordered the Seiro (plain cold noodle with dipping sauce) - one order with ube udon and one order with moringa soba. I loveddddd the ube udon while my husband really enjoyed the moringa soba. The ube udon has a mild flavor with a chewy texture, perfectly soaking up the dipping sauce. The moringa soba has an earthy flavor and is less chewy, but also pairs well with the dipping sauce. There was only one waitress and she was great. There was a good amount of buckwheat soba, dipping sauce, wasabi, and a bowl with rice topped with a piece of shrimp tempura and assorted vegetables tempura (asparagus, bean, pepper, sweet potato and onion). The tempura was crispy and flavorful. The rice had some sort of shoyu flavor to it and tasted great! If you're looking for a great soba meal, this is the place! Located in the Asia Stix food hall, Shingen was a nice surprise to see a specialty soba shop in Hawaii. After initially going around the different Asian restaurants to see their menu, the wife and I decided on Shingen, since they were offering special soba including "ube" and "moringa." We started off with an appetizer of kaki fry (or deep fried oysters), which came with four oysters and some greens with a little dressing. These were a great way to start the meal - crispy on the outside and juicy oysters in the middle. For the mains, both of us decided on a soba set that included a mini donburi - I had moringa soba with the ahi poke donburi. They say that moringa is a plant that provides rich nutrients, which they blend into the buckwheat to make their soba. To me, I thought it tasted like a slightly stronger soba, a bit more bitter and wheat-y, but still delicious, and chewy texture. Since it's typically warm in Hawaii, eating the soba while dipping it into the sauce was a nostalgic experience to when I used to live in Japan. The ahi poke was very flavorful (almost too salty for me), but the rice was fantastic - probably best rice I have had in Hawaii!
