Tame bowl with miso soup
Lauree T.

WOW, I love negitoro bowls now. First time trying one of these and also Totoya, and it was impressive. It felt like l went back to Japan again. It's only a counter seating style type and can fit around 15-20 people. But, it's very clean and organized. You can also see the workers making your dish! The customer service was great, they're very attentive and kind. I got the tame bowl and added a shoyu egg (you need to add it, it made the flavor so much more intense!) When I first ate it, it was like a punch of flavor. It was filled with umami as the salmon roe pops in your mouth. Every bowl order also comes with a miso soup! They have a 7 step guide on how to best eat the bowl and the sides, I approve! So good :)

I came around 12pm on a Wednesday and there were many open seats, though the restaurant is pretty small. There is only one guy making the bowls, so service is a tad slow. The tuna in the negitoro was fresh, but the portion sizes felt smaller than I thought they'd be. My boyfriend got the nagomi and the salmon, scallop, and shrimp it came with (in addition to the negitoro) weren't that fresh. I'm glad I got to try it, but I wouldn't wait over 30 minutes for this place.

Totoya was one of the highlights of my Hawaii trip. The fish is so fresh and they gave lots of it. Prices were also reasonable, especially coming from someone who lives in NYC. It's a smaller restaurant so try to put your name down early, but service is at least efficient so you're not waiting forever.

I came here with a party of five right at 11 AM on a weekday and no wait. I got the Tokujo and my husband got the Fukuju. We parked in a lot across the street. I devoured my entire bowl- rice and all. I got the shoyu egg sauce and the miso soup it comes with is incredible. My mother in law was with us and said the price was not bad for how much fish but not the same as Japan where she tried. For me, it was fantastic- fresh and flavorful. They care about quality of service and dining experience. I definitely want to come back here to get the Tokujo bowl again!

The negitoro bowls are amazing. The fish tastes fresh and even the miso soup is really good. You can tell they take pride in their bowls. I upgraded to the daily special salmon miso and it was 100 % worth it. They did not skimp. There were big chunks of salmon throughout. I like to add the egg yolk with shoyu because it melts into the bowl and gives everything this rich, creamy vibe. I'm also an ikura girl forever, so I added extra and no regrets. The pop and saltiness in each bite make it soo good. Service is super fast once you order, which I appreciate. The only downside is you have to wait outside in line and they do not take reservations, so peak hours can test your patience. But honestly... I still keep coming back. Fresh fish therapy is real.

I'm seriously drooling again just writing this review. Another amazing find thanks to Feed Mei Mei on YouTube! Dining at Totoya truly makes you feel like you've been transported back to Japan. We came for an early lunch and were lucky to grab the last couple of seats. They only have about 12-14 spots total, so it fills up quickly. I ordered the Nagomi bowl, which came with salmon, scallop, uni, shrimp, tuna, negitoro, and roe. My husband got the negitoro bowl and added snow crab. We both upgraded to the salmon miso soup, and it was so comforting and flavorful, definitely worth it. Each bowl comes with a couple pieces of nori, but you can request more for a small additional charge. And trust me, two pieces are not enough!. Everything tasted incredibly fresh and delicious. I only wish we had more time in Oahu to come back again, but we'll absolutely be returning on our next trip.

Go early to find parking and be prepared to wait in line. This place is small but worth the wait! The food is amazing!! Just go and try it for yourself! Oishi!!

If you really enjoy negitoro or kaisen don bowls then you'll be very satisfied with Totoya. Every time I go, I'm transported back to a restaurant in Japan. From the greeting at the door to the layout of the booth you sit at. The service is also on par with a Japanese restaurant -- fast and attentive. I have gone multiple times and every time the quality of the seafood used in the bowls are always top notch. While the portions may not look like a lot at first, you will definitely feel full after. I highly recommend getting the shoyu egg and extra nori to accompany your negitoro bowl. As far as the miso soup, you might want to consider getting the upgraded crab or shrimp miso soup.

I've been wanting to try this place for the longest time after seeing it all over social media. I've been on a mission to find something close to my favorite spot in Japan, Tsujihan, and this is by far the closest I've found. The bowl was everything I was hoping for, but more since I was able to pay more for different upgrades such as more Ikura, egg yolk shoyu and shrimp head miso soup. The seafood was high quality. It satisfied my Tsujihan craving without having to fly to Japan. We came on a Wednesday night for dinner with a party of four and had no wait at all. Service was friendly. Out of all the places I've tried searching for something similar, this one comes the closest. I will definitely be back!

One bite and I was instantly transported back to Japan. Everything from the quality of the fish to the house made shoyu, down to the perfect temperature of all the ingredients. Totoya blew my expectations out of the water. This was my single favorite bite in all of my hawaii trip. Phenomenal! Loved this place service was great server and chefs were so sweet, good vibes too. Lots of happy eaters.

The salmon was so fresh and fatty. Very reasonable prices for the quality and amount of food. Nice clean environment.

Totoya was hands down the best meal I had during my Hawaii trip. The fish was unbelievably fresh, and every bite tasted clean and high quality. I ordered the bowl that comes with pretty much everything, and it was loaded with a great variety of seafood that really showed off how good the ingredients are. The bowl came with miso soup, and I upgraded mine to the shrimp head version. That was a highlight. The broth had such a clean, rich seafood flavor without being heavy or fishy. I got there a few minutes before they opened and there was already a small line forming, so I'd highly recommend showing up early. It's definitely worth the wait.

Ariel M.

Though the restaurant is very small (no regular seating, just counter seating), the ambiance was nice and very clean with an authentic Japanese-small-stall-Izakaya feel. The staff were friendly and attentive. Portions were reasonable for the price, but pictures on the menu didn't quite reflect the actual dish ordered. Overall, I enjoyed and preferred the negitoro bowl with uni. However, whichever bowl you decide to enjoy, adding the shoyu egg yolk on top is highly recommended to really get that awesome umami taste out of the dish! Tips: -As the line may get long and the wait a bit lengthy during prime meal times, it's recommended to arrive at least 15mins before they open. -Assess the line length before parking as the most accessible parking is metered or hourly-parking lots. -This is a spot that is great for smaller parties and couples dining. However, bigger parties (5+ people) may experience a longer wait due to space and seating availability.

The crunchy garlic ahi was our favorite, great texture, super flavorful, and just really satisfying. The spicy salmon was also solid and hit the spot. We also added on the chicken (kind of like karaage). Not sure if it was just our timing, but it took a long time and ended up a bit overcooked. Ours was on the dry/hard side, so I probably wouldn't get that again. Overall, I'd 100% come back for the poke. The staff was really nice, she let us try a few different flavors and was super helpful. The space is pretty small with only a couple little tables, so it gets busy fast and the line can go out the door, but it's worth it for the poke.

I would definitely order this again and encourage everyone to try it. We also had the Pork medallions and a kalua pig sampler, they too were delicious and our cocktails were very unique, delicious, and strong. We then moved from the speakeasy to the restaurant and we had the Pele's Pit Ribs and the Tsunami Burger for dinner. The ribs were very delicous, it was a dry rub so very clean and easy to eat with the fingers and the fried rice was tasty. My wife loved her burger and if you look at the pictures you can see why. The ambiance was VERY COOL. The deliberate and cohesive mix of dim red lighting, and comfortable lounging chairs totally created that speakeasy atmosphere. Tucked away right behind Mud Hen Water in Kaimuki, their entrance is small and kind of easy to miss. There are a few parking spots in front & a small door leading to some amazing fish. I believe you can walk in and buy fish/seafood by the pound, but I actually have a subscription where I pay X amount per month & get a "fair share" of fish per every 2 weeks. You can play around with the portion sizes and frequency too. I think currently I receive 1-1.5 lb of fish per share of whatever the catch of the week is. I absolutely love the fish I receive from Ashley. You know it's fresh, it's sustainable and proceeds go directly to local fisherman. Over the past few months, I have received so many different types of fish. Some common fish I see are sashimi grade mahi mahi, ono, and ahi. Sometimes the fishermen will bring in invasive species & I always try to grab those. I've picked up whole kanpachi and whole opakapaka. It's always a fun challenge to try and clean & break down a whole fish lol. I think the craziest thing I picked up from Ashley was mahimahi head & bones. It was actually offered for free, I ended up making mahi dashi and then picked off of the meat for lunch. On Saturday I picked up some sashimi grade striped marlin & a whole octopus. I made a marlin carpaccio and grilled octopus for dinner :) I just love how Ashley and the team make it easy for us to be more connected with our local food source. Although it's a tad more expensive than buying fish at a convenience store, it is nice to know that all the fish is coming from our local fishermen from our shores.

First heard about this business from farmers market. They would have really good prices on fresh…read moreand frozen fish. This brick and mortar store is located right behind Mud Hen Water. Just turn into the parking lot and their entrance is at the end of it. Love their sashimi grade ahi. They have some good ahi Jerky, fish gumbo, etc. They even sell doggy treats. Best to call to see what fish they have as they do sell out from time to time. They are open Thursday - Sunday 10am-2pm.
